Anna Mitchell my thoughts exactly girl! Like if it’s bad ground and your horse is choppy around barrels instead of getting down & gritty, then pull out! Eat the money, not the injuries. I swear horses don’t deserve the ignorance of some riders 🤦🏾♀️
If you fall off the horse just fall off the horse instead of holding on, it's not going to kill you. yea maybe a couple of injuries or something but don't hold on the reins yanking on the horses face once you fall off or holding onto it's neck like come on
+McKinley B Just because accidents happen when you're riding doesn't mean you're not "in sync" with your horse. Accidents do happen...That's just part of being a horseman.
Kayla Komas some of these are literally people out of sync though and not riding with the horse. You have to ride every stride and keep your balance perfect for barrels or you risk going off the side or sliding out

Piper Sullivan honestly anything can happen so yes they are always needed. The only reason you shouldn’t wear a helmet is if the competition says you can’t. I know it’s not common in western riding to wear helmets but believe me if you can wear a helmet you might want to wear one.
I’m not a barrel racers, but most minus the guy (his horse seemed to slip) just seem to be bad riders. The last rider’s girth was too loose, hence the slipping saddle.

God it pisses me off to see comments of people hating on us western riders because they were not wearing a helmet. HELMETS ARE FUCKEN GOD OK! Some of you are mostly English riders and are hating on barrel racers. We get it you jealous that you are to scared to take off your helmet, while us western riders aren't. Some English riders might not even wear a helmet which is cool. I know for a fact a lot of people are going to come at me for saying this but keep in mind some western riders including myself dont like to wear helmets and we cant be forced to wear one ok! It's our choice.
I do English and Western. I do not wear a helmet during barrels simply because it does not go with my outfit. But, I have a very good horse. I understand how the less experienced western riders (walk trot) will wear a helmet. But I don't think we're "too wimpy." Honestly...

Once again I am amazed at how cowardly Western riders are. None of them have the balls to wear a helmet. As an EMT and Paramedic I have seen 6 riders taken unconscious to the hospital. Two of them are still sitting in their wheelchairs and drooling into cups. Good helmets and all of them would have only had bad headaches. But they lacked the courage or imagination to go against convention. It especially angers me when I see kids riding in hats.

Quick tip: If you feel your saddle slip, pull your feet out of the stirrups immediately. Don't try to hang on

I am only 13 (I have ridden since I was 2) and I see how many mistakes they are making! they aren't in sync with their horses!

Trust me horse racing and barrel racing are 2 different things. This was honestly just a bad arena. You must not know much about horses.

Still damage can happen with a helmet but it can protect from being worse I ride In mine most of the time but sometimes I don’t
