That entire show was incredible..The early work of Martin Scorsese with the farewell show of The Band..All of these guys at the peak of their careers..The Band, Dr.John, Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchel, Neil Young, Neil Diamond, Muddy Waters, The Staple Singers, Emmylou Harris, ..Of course, "Van The Man"!!! & more.
I’ve always had a healthy appreciation for The Band, but I wouldn’t say that they were one of my personal favorites. And yet, The Last Waltz has always had a special place in my heart. I found it hard to explain until fairly recently, when I came to realize that the concert itself took place on the night of my birth! As this version of The Band was leaving the world, I was entering… good for me, though the rest of the world might feel that they got the short end of that particular trade… oh well
I've seen Van Morrison live 5 times in Concert. Most recently in September 2023. The man can still bring it at 78. He never does a song the same way twice. He's a deep down soul man
@@dice1296 I've wondered often if THIS moment, in 1976, is the original mic drop. Not just destroying the mic like a Sex Pistols's Jonny Rotten, but as a punctuation and statement of pride and even a little arrogance. And who better then Van Morrison at the end of an incredibly powerful performance to say "Thank you" and then just let the mic drop. He's bent over, so it's not a long drop but the attitude of "And THAT'S how it's done, folks...." Bam.
My favourite from the movie is the Band performing with the Staples. It's well worth a deep dive as the members of The Band trade verses with one of the great gospel / soul groups. So much to explore in the vocal styles.
@@pacificareigns looks like. I'm a "healthy" person and normally I'm against drug/alcohol use but if you can do or do that because of the substances, god praise the substances!
I lived on the San Francisco peninsula from 1967-77 and this was the last concert I saw at Winterland. They opened the doors at 5:00 pm and it ended well after 2:00 am. I had seen the Band years earlier, and Van Morrison several times, but this show which also featured Dylan, Clapton, Neil Young, Ron Wood, Ringo Starr and many other guest performers was epic.
I have to say, I'm a Van Morrison tribute artist, huge fan. your analysis passion is spot on. You are one of the few people I've ever seen that really knows what's going on inside both the song and the artist in his delivery. Van stole the show in this film and your deep dive can help others find the explanation why. Ultimately all that technical freedom is helping him be an extraordinary communicator. Thank you very much and I think I shall be a fan of yours now too. Bravo❤
I'm 62 years old , The Last Waltz is from 1976 and I still get goosebumps at this performance from Van The Man and The Band together . I see something different and unseen each and every time from this performance. It really is music to be enjoyed and be proud of .
Always loved the performances in "The Last Waltz". This is a perfect example of when an artist completely destroys their studio recording via their live performance. I can't even listen to the studio version anymore. Great review and thank you for taking the time to examining this song.
Robbie Robertson’s account of working with Van on this was great. Apparently The Band loved this one. Have a look at an older Van at Hollywood Bowl in 2008.
Thank you so much for this analysis. Straight to the top of my favorite reactions list. Van has been my #1 for decades. Saw him live only once: he didn't have his band, just came out with his guitar sat on the edge of the stage and sang. Amazing. Thank you again, you made my day.
This is such a joyous performance, I'll never get tired of watching it. Van is such an instinctive musician, it all seems so effortless and in the moment. I think being a saxophone player might have helped the way he shapes his words and phrases.
THIS is the classic performance of 'The Band's' "The Last Waltz" movie. Bethany, you could create an entire program analyzing the great vocals that took place through the course of that wonderful movie. This is classic Rock & Roll at it's best from some of the best performers of the era....all backed by "The Band".
I kind of knew instinctively that this performance had a special magic but this analysis brilliantly reveals where the magic comes from - this lady is a genius (as is Van the Man).
For me, when i was very very young i fell in love with "into the mystic " he has a way of saying such deep things so simply and delivering them with such casual, boiling passion. He's amazing
Truly great vocal performance. The fact that The Band is supporting him must have given Morrison a huge lift. Can clearly see The Band members are getting a real kick playing with him
"Brown Eyed Girl," "Why Must I Always Explain?", "Wavelength," "Tupelo Honey," "Listen to The Lion," "Someone Like You," "Days Like This," and "In The Garden",'Moondance', are all Van Morrison songs that are outstanding. You really can't make a list of songs that can explain his talent. He's a musical genius, singer, and poet. His music has been described as attaining a spiritual feeling beyond or above the range of typical experiences. A transcendence feeling of experiencing the music through his lyrics and voice. Other songs like Jackie Wilson Said (I'm In Heaven When You Smile), Full Force Gale, Domino, Cypress Avenue, Queen Of The Slipstream, and Dweller On The Threshold are good examples. It's a deep rabbit hole to go down - but, believe me, it's well worth it.
One of my favorites of his "songs" is "Coney Island". He doesn't sing, he just describes a day trip around Ireland. Just like I've done many times. Not to be too sappy, but it sings to my Celtic soul. The craic is definitely good when I hear it.
The Last Waltz. on your channel Betthany. Wow I can't believe it. I've waited for so long. More Please. Certainly the best concert movie of all time. Thankyou so much
One of the finest performances ever filmed. So many factors combined to make it great. Van really responded to performing with The Band and vice versa, also both parties had really responded to the special setting that was the Last Waltz. So many peers present on stage, back stage and in the audience. As well as the audience that was to come once the film was out. They were performing for more than just the people in the building.
Sweet! I started watching this before my morning meetings. I couldn’t finish it without being late. So I paused the video and picked up right where we left off. Thank you for a delightful musical interlude. If I understood you correctly, this was the first time you ever saw this version on the song. May I suggest you watch the entire concert? It is brilliantly done. Thank you.
By far my fav from him The first time i saw this vid i had to learn it on guitar It is a fun song to play along with Love it Try the band with The Staples Mavis Has nothing but soul in her voice
I saw Van Morrison in 1971 at The Lions Share, a small club in San Anselmo, in Marin County, north of San Francisco. He played many shows in the Bay Area around that time, and he always had excellent musicians in his band. What made this show so great was that we got to see him and his band up close. It was a great time to live in the Bay Area, when San Francisco was a Rock and Roll Mecca.
Oh yeah, great choice to allow Van Morrison to perform and give your reactions, Bethany 👍 I've never heard this song, but his power and agility is so engaging. Full of passion too. My favorite CD is "Astral weeks" 👍👋🧙♀️
Van Morrison heard American music on radio broadcasted from American Military Forces in West Germany. Van Morrison also had a father with an extensive record collection of different American musical genres.
Van The Man was brilliant in the 60s with Them, the 70s and the 80s. These days he's more phoning it in. This is from The Last Waltz by The Band. A lot of artists played with The Band in that concert. Take a look into that it was legendary
I have only recently become a huge Van fan... although I am 75 y/o and have known many of his songs over the years. But, lately he keeps drawing me in. Your analysis of this performance is awesome. Thank you.
love van because he has character in his songs in his voice. he often sings to the words hes singing to the top! and bottom low down. haha little baritone, but he can sing anything he wants play most instruments also best musician ever , btw if you didnt know he used to be able sing very high, twilight zone ' Try for Sleep' or a deeper voice. so many songs to do Lover's Prayer' is a great song by him but he has hundreds of great songs tho.

Yes yes yes !!! Your words and reactions really echo and amplify the joy I get from Van's performance here. Can I (strongly) recommend that you have a look at his performance of 'Sweet Thing' live at the Hollywood Bowl (2008). This is an artist really working miracles with an untouchably great song from his back catalogue. Mesmerising and definitely worthy one of your video reviews !
This version of Caravan is the only one that exists as far as I'm concerned. Several childhood core memories occurred with this movie (The Last Waltz) on in the background.
Great review of "Caravan" live! You pointed out a lot of technical things that I didn't know about. I've seen Van the Man live, and he can be a little grumpy. But he's always a great singer/songwriter. I've done 2 masterclasses with Scorsese in person, and he rarely talks about this film. But it's one of my 3 favourite Scorsese films. Looking forward to hearing more of your reviews. - Ed
One of my favorite Van songs. And an Incredible performance. The music back then (60-70s) was insane. The golden era for me that will never be repeated. Shame I wasn't born till the 80's :)). I envy the people that lived through it.
What a great time to react to this! This concert was filmed on Thanksgiving day. The Last Waltz and Waiting for Columbus are the best live albums ever.
I figured this out a bit ago, he sings ....like he's a Saxaphone. On the diction, he purposely never sings something the same way twice if he can help it. Man he's my favorite artist for sure.
I love the way Bethany gets all immersed in these videos. I can't wait until the day she discovers Edda Dell'Orso. Maybe in a song like "Souvenir d'un soir" with Stelvio Cipriani
Love Van Morrison. That performance in the Last Waltz is a highlight in a film overflowing with fantastic moments.

I love his passion, and for me that's what it's all about. I can, and have, watched this over and over and over. Love The Man!
Never forget that Morrison's principal instrument is saxophone. He sings sax lines every time
Van has soooo much soul and grit. I love his work. Thank you for doing a video on him, hopefully you do more like perhaps Tupelo Honey.
Having Robbie Robinson on guitar and The Band backing him is a kick to Van also.
