She is nicknamed "the sparrow" in Turkish music, with a height of 5 and a 4, delivering the best sounds in Turkish popular music back in the day --I grew up with her music...
One of the best female voices in the world. Thanks for your reaction. ❤ Sezen's voice always makes me feel kind of homesick, though I'm German. Does this make any sense? 😊❤Try "Git", there is a video with English subtitles. So wonderful and heartbreaking!
The strongest side of Sezen's music is the lyrics. They are so powerful in most of her songs. Poems are lost in translation though. Like this one. The poet used "smile" in three different meanings simultaneously. 1) Smile, everything's gonna be alright. 2) Smile, that's the only way to relieve this 3) Smile if you can, to this pathetic, miserable situation you're in, you can't! So, it confuses you. He encourages and gives hope while telling you it's hopeless. You want to try, to fight and you accept it won't work simultaneously. That's why we cry hearing this song, IMO.
@kozatas I agree with you. Poems and lyrics are often lost in translation. This happens to German lyrics as well, there are so many Phrases you just cannot translate properly. And I think Turkish songtextes are even more lyrical. But really good music touches your heart even though you don't understand the words. Music and the way somebody sings, like Sezen, is an international language 👍
Just like other fellow Turkish people here, I'm also here to share that Sezen Aksu writes songs and sings in a way that crystallises even the most nuanced, subtle, complex, beautiful and bitter-sweet human experiences into a shared, collective musical experience. I am so eternally grateful for her contributions to Turkish music (things went downhill after she and the talented artists she introduced us to passed their productivity prime and left the mainstream to pretty cheap, bad music) but I am also eternally grateful to her for giving the impact of her music in my life. The nostalgia, the melancholy, is delicious.
Even if you weren’t born in that era, you always grow up with songs by Sezen Aksu. She is an absolute icon and a legend! The phrase “I don’t even have a cat”, reminds everyone of this song, even today - and the interesting thing is, you cannot find one single person from those years who doesn’t have peaceful, fun, naive, and pure memories surrounding Sezen Aksu songs ❤
This song is from a poem by Kemal Burkay, which advocates for hope despite everything. The poet wrote this song in a deprived city(in Eastern Anatolia) where even a new film coming to the town cinema makes the climate warmer and pleasant(Mediterranean weather) and makes him hopeful. Not even having a cat of his own, just smile, it goes on to say. Just imagine as if the whole town has become at odds with you, do not stop smiling.
I'm a huge Sezen Aksu fan. She is a versatile artist. She writes songs , composes and sings like an angel. She reads a lot and in spite of not giving concerts anymore she still produces and keeps on making songs. From the lyrics you can understand how high her awareness is and how she incorporates spirituality into her songs .I had a chance listening to her live and it was the best concert of my life. Tears were running down my cheeks throughout the concert. God bless her . 😇💓💓💞💕🙏🙏
Sezen Aksu is one of Turkey's most beloved and influential singers, songwriters, and composers. Often called the "Queen of Turkish Pop," she's been active since the 1970s and has helped shape modern Turkish music, blending pop, folk, and classical elements into a unique style. Her songs aren't just catchy-they’re deeply poetic, often dealing with themes like love, loss, and life’s complexities, which resonate across generations.
Greetings from Turkey. The nickname "Sezen Aksu" is a little sparrow, but she is the queen of pop music in Turkey and each of her songs makes you experience a very different emotional intensity when you listen to them. Your comments are very accurate, thank you.
She was the queen of Turkish music for decades, and I was so lucky to be young when she was at her prime; thank you "Minik Serçe" (Tiny Sparrow) for making me what I am! For those interested in listening more songs (at least 100 more top songs you can find), check the translation of the lyrics, or you know what? learn Turkish right away, you wont regret :) And thanks Bethany for this special treat, repeating the parts that touch our hearts, without spoiling the continuity.
Sezen Aksu is, objectively, one of the greatest artists in Turkiye's history. I work in the language field and I was so pleased to find out a lot of non-Turkish people I've met have heard of her. I highly recommend "unuttun mu beni" (have you forgotten me?) if you liked her music. Also, if you're interested, Barış Manço, Cem Karaca, Duman, Manga, Athena and Model are some artists this channel hasn't covered that I think would be a great way to get more into Turkish music.
"the wailing quality" you speak of is , i believe, the very voice of the ancient soil of this part of the earth. Through Mesapotamia, through, Anatolia, through the Mediterranean and the Aegean, the earth itself sings a bitter sweet melody and Sezen Aksu is a very special, very rare vessel that melody flows through so touchingly. it is as if she sings with the Knowledge and the Burden of the ages
You have taken me to 30 years ago with such an emotional heart feel. We all have grown up with this song and Sezen has been a goddess for us in those times. She has been our voice when we first fell in love, when we experienced our first heart break. However, I will never forgive her, as she became one of the first promoter of the demon that converted my long missed country into a corrupt state. Her promotion back in that time was a critical catalyst to convince the crowds. That’s why, I prefer to remember her in her accompany to my teenage but nothing more
I'm %100 agree with you about her. What an unforgivable mistake she did. That was a big disappointment and still is. Some mistakes cause enormous bad things and that was one of them. Of course she is a good singer, composer but she has many badly caracteristics.Turkish community decided to not see it or tolerate it. During the years, she dominate the music industry and even the media. She use the people's love to cover all of it. Don't get me wrong, I still think she is one of the diva of Turkish music, still like to listen her songs. But that does not change that the reality, her political view is rubbish.
From where I stand I see differently. She advocated for everyones rights, however the media portrayed her as though she favoured Erdogan. It is she who protested the government with a poem, remember? Erdogan wants us polarised and you help him achieve his goal. Should I be angry with you? No. Because this is strategically not a clever idea. Secondly it is also not logical. I believe you have the right to share your observations; however, analysis can vary significantly even for the same observation.
Whenever someone talks about Sezen(in artistic context) everyone stops for a second. Because Sezen is kind of an art form in Turkiye. She is a singer and also a song writer who has been a big help to so many other stars(like Tarkan) to shine till today. I wish you could also understand the lyrics while listening the song because it hits even harder and moves you up to the space (not even the sky).
Evet senin söylediğin bütün tespitler doğru. Sezen'in de tıpkı karakteri gibi sesi de ince ve naziktir. o bir ozandır. O bir numaradır. O bu topraklarda yaşamış efsane kadınlardandır. Bizim sevgilimizdir. Teşekkürler..
Ruhunun güzelliği yüzüne vurmuş.. Güzel kadın Bethany! Seni her gördüğümde bana mutluluk ve umut veriyorsun. Bende seni ve reaksiyonlarını izlemeye doyamıyorum. Sezen Aksu' ya gelince keşke sözlerini anlasan kalbini bırakırdın. Mükemmel bir reaksiyon lütfen Türk Kültürünü keşfetmeye devam et. ❤
the lyrics of this song derive their power from the people of anatolia who know how to be happy even with small things, nature and true love. the fascinating part of the song is not sezen aksu's vocal performance, but her unique voice's ability to emotionally convey the pain specific to these lands to the listener. these lands are ancient lands where great wars and great suffering have taken place. that's why this pain and plea is felt in many of our songs. Aysel Gürel, who wrote the lyrics of this song, should also be congratulated.
Aymahrem Akmyradova. This girl's voice is extraordinarily beautiful. When you listen, you will feel your body hair tightening. Yalnız Çiçek,Aynen Öyle,Elimde Duran Fotoğrafın,My Heart Will Go On. It would be great if you react to any of these song renditions 🙏
Amazing lyrics, fantastic vocal performance and, the venue. Ephesus amphitheater dates back to 300 BC and the ancient city which you can still visit most part of it dates back to 550 BC. That region was inhabited starting from 6000 BC!!!!!!!! I always had an issue(and still) with Turkish modern music. Fantastic vocal performances, deep lyrics but instrumentality it is weak. I often recall it as poems with some background "tunes". A line from this song became a part of Turkish slang also. "I even don't have a cat, do you understand me? How can I smile?" When we wanted to say that we feel blue, we used to say "I don't even have a cat!".
Sezen Aksu tells stories in most of her songs and really transports the listener to that world. All those vocal moments you loved also are placed perfectly to tell the story.
I am Bosnian and not even understanding all of her songs l love her and how her voice can touch my soul deeply. She is helping me cope with life . God bless her.

Dear “The Vocalist”, first I would like to thank you for your analytics and illuminating comments while listening to and introducing this song to your audience. I love the fact that how you recognize and appreciate the good quality voice and excellent work. I’m 55, Sezen Aksu was and still is the greatest poet, vocalist (singer) artist of our time. We know we love Sezen Aksu, but if you ask any great Turkish musicians to explain this song second by second in details, I don’t think they could do as much of a justice as you did for this song and the artist. You explain to me why I love Sezen Aksu so much without growing in the culture, without knowing the language and without understanding the full dimensions of the lyrics (because of meaning loss during the process of translation). And you are right, that note and sound has a lot to do with language but also the color, quality and strength of Sezen Aksu’s voice. Thank you for doing this, thank you for appreciating Sezen Aksu as much as we do. Love, good luck!❤🙏🏻🧿
The male singer at the beginning is Cihat Okan and you may want to analyze his song Yine mi Çiçek and other beautiful songs by Sezen would be Vazgeçtim and Vay. Mind you this song Gülümse is guaranteed to make me cry everytime.
Its very interesting to watch a reactor who doesn't understand the lyrics like I do but still feel the emotions. please make more reactions to her and her students like Sertap Erener, Levent Yüksel, Aşkın Nur Yengi. You can get similar feelings from these artists as well.
It is not possible to understand this song without knowing Turkish very well. Because there are so many metaphorical meanings in it. Turkish is the richest language in the world in terms of words and analogies. You not only listen to Turkish songs but also feel them.
All the people here who doesnt understand Turkish, you are missing a whole world. A world of beautiful poetry and lyrics. She is a true gem. Very special. God Bless her 🙏🧿
She is our queen who raised many princesses and princes for Turkish music❤️ and her lyrics❤️❤️ we can not explain what we feel when listening to her… and her sincere, elegant, kind personality❤️❤️❤️
Gülümse is a song from Sezen Aksu’s '91 album of the same name, which became a cultural milestone in Turkey, selling over 3.5 million copies and standing as one of the best-selling albums in Turkish music history. The lyrics are originally a poem by Turkish/Kurdish poet Kemal Burkay, beautifully crafted with rich metaphors and symbolism. As the lyrics are so rich in metaphor and symbolism, translating them without losing their essence is extremely challenging. I would like to translate them for you but it is kind of impossible for me, not because I don't understand the lyrics but because my English skills won't be sufficient tell it in English as rich as it is in Turkish. At its core tho, Gülümse (which translates to "Smile" in English. The verb is Gulumsemek and Gulumse is the imperative conjugation of it) is a deeply melancholic yet hopeful piece. The song encourages finding the strength to smile and look for the bright side, even in the face of personal and collective struggles. It captures the delicate balance of someone trying to uplift a loved one while grappling with their own difficulties, a bittersweet act of resilience and solidarity. The poetic lyrics make extensive use of metaphor and imagery, (like "dreams of forests", "the Mediterranean climate", and "fleeting moments of joy") that reflect both the individual’s yearning for hope and a broader emotional connection to Turkish culture. Its melody and message resonate universally but also carry the unique soul of a region familiar with hardship and perseverance. Gülümse is not just a song; it’s a timeless reminder to find light in darkness and to keep going, no matter how heavy the burdens may feel. Oh side note: As I have mentioned above, lyrics from a Kurdish/Turkish poet's poem. The song's arrangements are made by two Armenian/Turkish musicians, Onno Tunc and Arto Tuncboyaciyan. It is a great example of how colorful is Anatolian cultural heritage.
Seing Sezen performing live was always quite an experience. Thankfully i have had this opportunity a couple of times. Unfortunately she doesn’t perform anymore. Hats off to her vocalist, Mr. Cihan Okan as well. I must also add that two of these concert series were performed at Ephesus and Aspendos theaters, which are around 2000 years old, each. Thank you for this wonderful review.
Sezen Aksu is one of the most important singers of Turkiye. Her voice and music are incredible and she has an artistic understanding that is far beyond her time. She is an artist that everyone will listen to and be fascinated by, she is the ‘Little Sparrow’ of Turkiye. Minik Serçe 🕊️🤍
She devoted her love to Uzay Hepari, a love she lost far too soon in a tragic motorcycle accident. The memory of that deep connection remains with her, making her reading profoundly sincere and heartfelt.
thanks for listening Sezen Aksu, this is a very small example from her representing maybe 1% of her music, she is a musical genius who has changed the Turkish music, effected a generation, after she stop producing very actively, we are in a decline in music, she is not from this world. Tarkan, Sertap who you already listened are her discoveries and there are many more. My favorite songs from her are "Haydi gel benimle ol", "bu gece", "deger mi?"
Ah bütün hayatım Akdeniz'in kenarında geçti. Çocukken bu şarkıyı dinlerken "iklim zaten Akdeniz haha" diye sevinirdim. Şimdi çok uzaklarda soğuk ve yağmurlu bir yerden Akdenizimi özlüyorum.

She has a unique, captivating and sorrowful beautiful voice and I love the lyrics she writes even more. Her poetry skills are impeccable. That says something. Very nice video 🍀
Sezen aksu is the queen of emotions and music of Turkey.. Turkish people are very happy to learn and taste love, tolerance and music with Aksu's voice and her heart.. I recommend you to watch the whole concert.. Sezen Aksu keeps all the people living in Turkey and interfaith tolerance alive throughout the entire concert. AnnenMayKantereit tomy song also makes me homesick, even though I'm Turkish
@craftart99 Henning 's voice is so unique. Greetings from Germany to Türkiye
The strongest side of Sezen's music is the lyrics. They are so powerful in most of her songs.
Poems are lost in translation though. Like this one.
The poet used "smile" in three different meanings simultaneously.
1) Smile, everything's gonna be alright.
2) Smile, that's the only way to relieve this
3) Smile if you can, to this pathetic, miserable situation you're in, you can't!
Yeah do you know this masterpiece was used in many Turkish dramatic love movies
Sezen Aksu is like a whole world waiting to be discovered for you. You are very lucky to have found it.
couldn’t have said it better! 👏
I believe music is universal.
Did anyone else got something in their eye after listening to her even if they don't know a word she is saying?
35 yıldır dinliyorum ilk kez 10 yaşında minik serçeyi dinledim onun gibi bir divaya sahip olduğumuz için Tüm Türkiye gurur duyuyor
Sezen Aksu's songs are present in every heartbreak and every joy we experience. She is our precious
🥂
Thank you. This is true 👌✨
She is genius, sezen❤ she writes, she sings, she raised many many singers. True queen of Turkish pop music.
Bu şiir hapishane şiiridir.Belkş derken dışarıya özlem.Ayrıca hapishanede kedi beslemek yasaktı ve kedisinin olmamasının sebebi bu
I wasn't even sad now lm crying 😢
+1 😢
I'm a huge Sezen Aksu fan. She is a versatile artist. She writes songs , composes and sings like an angel. She reads a lot and in spite of not giving concerts anymore she still produces and keeps on making songs. From the lyrics you can understand how high her awareness is and how she incorporates spirituality into her songs .I had a chance listening to her live and it was the best concert of my life. Tears were running down my cheeks throughout the concert. God bless her . 😇💓💓💞💕🙏🙏
Simply beautiful, so much heart and soul, and I loved the ending with the two singing together!
Kız Türk müziklerine hiç girişmeden önce ne kadar hayat dolu parlak yüzlü enerjikti bizim müziklerden sonra çöktü 🤦🏻♂️
Hahahahaha

Hi Bethany , the name of that handsome gentleman vocalist is Cihan Okan and he has been performing with Sezen for ages.
It is written as Sezen Aksu and read as 'Little Sparrow'. She is the inspiration and mentor of many artists in Turkey.❤
She's my favorite singer maybe for 35 years!
Sezen Aksu is amazing. I spent my childhood, youth and adulthood with her.
Sezen Aksu is one of the pioneers of pop music in Turkey.
That’s why, I prefer to remember her in her accompany to my teenage but nothing more
Merhaba, who did she promote for? 🙏
You've chosen A Master Piece ❤
Sezen Aksu'yu keşfettiğiniz için şanslısınız. Çok güzel bir ses dinliyorsunuz ve artık vazgeçemeyeceksiniz. Tebrik ederim.
She is like a fountain spraying lush rich sound over all of us listening.
Ruhunun güzelliği yüzüne vurmuş.. Güzel kadın Bethany! Seni her gördüğümde bana mutluluk ve umut veriyorsun. Bende seni ve reaksiyonlarını izlemeye doyamıyorum. Sezen Aksu' ya gelince keşke sözlerini anlasan kalbini bırakırdın. Mükemmel bir reaksiyon lütfen Türk Kültürünü keşfetmeye devam et. ❤
This is a good channel, and I enjoy seeing a new post from you show up. Thank you for doing what you do.
the lyrics of this song derive their power from the people of anatolia who know how to be happy even with small things, nature and true love. the fascinating part of the song is not sezen aksu's vocal performance, but her unique voice's ability to emotionally convey the pain specific to these lands to the listener. these lands are ancient lands where great wars and great suffering have taken place. that's why this pain and plea is felt in many of our songs.
Aysel Gürel, who wrote the lyrics of this song, should also be congratulated.
I have been listening her for Forty years.
She is a composing machine. And all of her songs have perfect lyrics. We Turks adore her.
I can understand you, I know what feeling you while listening her voice, because when I listening Sezen Aksu I'm feeling same things as you😊
Amazing lyrics, fantastic vocal performance and, the venue.
How can I smile?"
When we wanted to say that we feel blue, we used to say "I don't even have a cat!".
The original poem comes to life line by line with exact emotions it was supposed to wake. Brilliant performance
ive seen her in Royal Albert Hall back in 2009, she is a gem. sezen kralice!
I was there :)
❤❤❤❤Thanks for this song. The best one of Lovely SEZEN and we love you from Türkiye
on 80 s and 90 s... Sezen Aksu the Queen Of Turkish Pop Music ..
The strongest side of Sezen's music is the lyrics. They are so powerful in most of her songs.
Poems are lost in translation, though. Like this one.
The poet used "smile" in three different meanings simultaneously.
1) Smile, everything's gonna be alright.

Bethany 'The Vocalyst' is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen! Angelic beauty 💖
One of my favourite Sezen songs and never watched that performance. It's just... ah amazing. Thank you bringing this up...
Hi Bethany, I really like the degree of intercultural sensitivity you possess, that definitely reveals itself whenever you make such videos!
Sezen Aksu efsanedir. Onun şarkıları içimizi titretir. İyi ki var❤
She is the queen of Turkish Pop Music and she is the one who discovered and launched Sertap Erener
Ve yıldız tilbe ve Tarkan
She produced so many great songs and musical talents.
The male singer at the beginning is Cihat Okan and you may want to analyze his song Yine mi Çiçek and other beautiful songs by Sezen would be Vazgeçtim and Vay. Mind you this song Gülümse is guaranteed to make me cry everytime.
Love yine mi cicek and Sezen .
Sezen Aksu is truly a Music miracle ❤
Its very interesting to watch a reactor who doesn't understand the lyrics like I do but still feel the emotions. please make more reactions to her and her students like Sertap Erener, Levent Yüksel, Aşkın Nur Yengi. You can get similar feelings from these artists as well.
she is unbelievable .. sooo falling love with that Lady..when i was teenager , her voice and songs was telling my feelings .i am 57 and she is stil..
Türkiye'de aşk üç kişiliktir: Seven, sevilen ve Sezen Aksu.
Sounds of my land and water. In a few words, they're singing about the whole human history.
Sezen Aksu is one of the biggest Turkish singers and has many many songs for 40 years.
the biggest !!!
She is a starcluster from whom new stars are born, she nourishes them with her songs and support.
Thank you for your efforts, our music is beautiful
Wow! Sezen Aksu? I wasn’t expecting such a reaction. Good on you. 😊❤️
All right my lady friend.... I find that this song could actually tingle someone's senses. Great reaction ‼️💯😁👍🏻
Sezen Aksu is a so special singer and song factory. She has many songs. Her voice is so emotional.
She is one of the greatest singer alive ❤
Ah bütün hayatım Akdeniz'in kenarında geçti. Çocukken bu şarkıyı dinlerken "iklim zaten Akdeniz haha" diye sevinirdim. Şimdi çok uzaklarda soğuk ve yağmurlu bir yerden Akdenizimi özlüyorum.
When I opened your video to see your smile, coming across 'Smile,' one of my favorite songs, made me smile. :)
You are so lucky to find her !
Please make more videos about her 😇 I love to watch your reactions💜
I fell in love with the depth in Bethany's look while listening to Sezen at 01:47, her natural beauty. I'm so tired of all the botoxed women everywhere, that seeing such a pure beauty really healed my heart. You are so beautiful Bethany!
Sezan aksu is another level in Türkiye, I mean we have Sezen Aksu, her students and others. 🤗
She is an an amazing unique songwriter, composer and singer! She is a legend in Türkiye, I've been listening to her for ca. 40 years with great joy!
She has a unique, captivating and sorrowful beautiful voice and I love the lyrics she writes even more. Her poetry skills are impeccable. That says something. Very nice video 🍀
sezen aksu ....queen.....❤
She is "THE" Queen of Turkish Music.
Anyone who really wants to get to know Turkey should watch this concert.. Turkey is the country of tolerance that the world is looking for.. It is possible to see this at the Sezen Aksu concert..
I see that you have finally discovered one of the best pop singers ever! Some of her songs may sound unsual to you, but I ensure you that there are some of her that they are stunnning, unduable and you never get bored listening to them. Btw, thank you so much for commenting on her song.
You're already impressed even if you don't understand the lyrics😢 you can never understand what this song means to us 😢 our Queen forever 👑 and Cihan at the beginning unfortunately he's so underrated 💔 i love his voice also 😍
