Amazing video! As a first time viewer I want to compliment how in-depth this review was, while also adding your own funny flair. I can see your channel doing numbers from all the hard work you put into it. With all that said, please do a video on setting up DIG! Thanks for the great content that I can't wait to binge, keep it up.
This is the first i have seen one of your videos! I loved it! Very informative, yet halarious and kept me laughing the entire time! Im a subscriber for sure now!
I like how descriptive you are about the form factor. I don't know how to put it, but it just seems like more than the other video I've seen on this device. Kinda wanna get one now, but that will have to wait for my end of year bonus lol
Not sure if mentioned yet, but Launchbox has updated for Android and it’s flawless, and quite excellent. I’m using it on my GPD and intend to when I update to this Retroid unit. Nice coverage btw!
Thanks GN! Yeah, for the price, you get a lot of functionality. Having a relatively modern version of Android on there opens up a ton of possibilities.
Having decided to buy one of these next month, I've been obsessed with watching videos about it. This was a pretty good video about the device. The last one I watched was some guy that had never even looked at an emulator before. He said he spent 5 hours just trying to load a single ROM (after learning that he actually had to find a ROM in the first place), then spent half the video complaining how he essentially bought a DIY device not realizing it didn't just come with games out of the box. Followed be him telling people not to get it if they wanna use it to play games because it's "too much work to set up"....
i have had mine for about a month now and loving it mainly play ps1 games on it and n64 and mame every once in a wile. i like to play the game tapper runs it perfectly
Oh man, I love the retroid launcher. it absolutely sucks that yours is borked. Glad it has options, though, and you can still enjoy the system. I woul love it if you did a Dig set up video, tho
Excellent video. This is the RP2+ in a nutshell. It's good enough for some early 3D consoles like PS1, PSP, N64, and Dreamcast, but also can even be stretched into a little gamecube and ps2. Another great use of this console is playing native Android ports of classic games. Many of the final fantasy games have native Android ports FROM SquareEnix WITH controller support. Games like Final Fantasy 1, 2, and 3 and CronoTrigger run VERY well. Now most of these you could emulate, but some have had upscaling/ slight improvements to UI and audio. Some of them are worth the cost.
I'm really glad you felt the same about the launcher. I just cannot stand it what so ever! I just hope to get this thing set up with a bunch of retro games. I'm not worried about pushing it's limits too much. I just want it set up and ready to play.
Indeed! Although actually I'd have to disagree with you on the m.2, I don't think the SD card read speed is much of a bottleneck on cheaper entry-level devices like this. If it had more horsepower, then yeah definitely faster storage would make noticeable difference, but the SD card on this setup works well enough IMO.
So I've had my Retroid Pocket 2+ for about a week now, and got it all set up. It is definitely a fantastic device, and the ability to have 250+ games from my childhood, classics, and many I missed out on, is incredible - it's like having a family game library and does everything up to PS1 and Dreamcast exceptionally well. GameCube hit and miss. I would say, I would enjoy a guide to DIG on Android. I have not had issues with the Retroid launcher and kinda like it, but would like a good option for backup or if I want to try something new! I haven't seen any recent guides on DIG for the Retroid, and I'd love to have you walk through it while we share some diet root beers!
Wow, I just ordered my RP2+ today and now I see this video and I'm even more excited now. I just sold my RP2. I thought that one was also great, but I'm really sold because of the performance improvement and touch screen the RP2+ has. I used my RP2 a lot as a home console. Just like you demonstrated I connected it to my TV and used my 8bitdo (snes version) as a controller. I never again want my retro console to be without hdmi output. It's brilliant! I still like to know how you managed that streaming stuff, like "the Snitch" stuff you demonstrated. Anyways, thanks a lot for the great vid. Really enjoyed the review about this great device, narrated by a guy who sounds like he's got a terrible cold. ;-)
These are kinda cheap now on Amazon so I think I'm going to pick one up. Plus I suddenly wanted a device with a joystick as the primary movement controller.
Dope video. Big fan. I’ve been collecting these little devices for about an year now and this is by far the most entertaining. Quick question how did you get “snitch emulation” working on it?
That's streamed off my PC via Moonlight. It works great! On my 5ghz network there is basically zero latency or visual artifacts. It really does feel like playing native Snitch games ;)
I had a Samsung s22 plus for a while, but I ended up returning it because it didn't really impress me for the price. However the emulation performance on it was outstanding. I almost kept it for that reason alone!
UA-cam playback works perfectly. According to the RP2+ compatibility chart, YES Roblox works. "It mostly depends on the game, most games that I played worked fine. Driving simulator had some graphical glitches but very playable." docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/103503TsnahFfuBKGlFAqC2r69acWaf578I6TEZuZDP4/edit#gid=564961685
Oh weird. Nope, works fine on mine. Maybe your TV doesn't support the resolution this is outputting so it's cropping the image? Have another TV you can try it on?
@@TechDweeb I'll give it a shot on the TV directly when I get the chance maybe it's my HDMI switch. But yea it crops off the top and bottom like about 10% of it.
Glad you called out the launcher. Every update it seems to get worse. Ive never really gotten DIG to play well, might have another crack. Would be good if U made a vid.
Have the same one as yours, love it. But to be fair, as much as I enjoy the power etc I haven’t touched it since receiving my Miyoo Mini 2 weeks ago. Maybe that will change, I need to dedicate each device to a scenario I think.
The MiYoo mini is still my favourite device, even after playing with the RP2+ for a week. I just don't bother much with high end emulation so there's no need to carry around a big device to play dreamcast when 9/10 times I'm playing GBA or NES or whatever. Yeah dedicating devices to scenarios is a good way to spread them around. The MiYoo lives in my pocket, so I'm always finding random times throughout the day to bust it out, but the RP2+ lives on my coffee table and I'll probably only play it when I chill on the couch.
Yay rp2+ video! Honestly, I needed a video like this. Lucky for me I know the specs of this device by heart, huh 😁 If you want to stream games, 1280x1024 is actually a 5:4 res, 1280x960 is 4:3, exactly double the screen res. Personally, I kind of don't really like Dig. My first gripe was when it recognised Colin McRae rally 2 as a ps2 game and offered me no way to change it. Another issue - in the end, it's easier for me to fire up Retroarch, or a dedicated emulator, and run from there. Still waiting for a nice solution like Emulationstation, but I don't think that will happen. Probably issues with the way Android is built. As for tinkering, well, I do own android phone. Because of tinkering, mind you, doesn't have anything to do with the fact a new iPhone is 5x more expensive! Nothing at all! Looking forward to the next videos, hoping it'll be series 😁
Yeah I'm kinda with you on just using Retroarch as my frontend. I can usually get into the game I want way quicker in Retroarch than any other flashy frontend, and you have all the settings you could want both before and during a game launch. Man if Emulationstation came to native droid, that'd be a game changer!
@@TechDweeb launch box is for android and it scratches that itch better than dig ever did. Though they have yet to add a themes option the default theme looks clean
I'm with ya on the brightness. And actually I have issues with it being not bright enough sometimes. I was playing on my porch the other day, not even in direct sunlight, and at max brightness I felt like it was a little dim. I pulled out my MiYoo mini and it was way brighter and easier to see.
Hi, I'm a new sub and hope you do more vids with the RP2+. When I use Dolphin for handhelds it let me configure my 8bitdo pro 2 plus controller and at that point I save the controller config to dolphin, but if I exit the game I loose the controller setting and have to configure it the next time I use dolphin. Any ideas on my problem?
I will DEFINITELY be doing more RP2+ vids! I don't know that I'm going to be much help with your Dolphin issue. Are you using the "Dolphin for Handheld" app that came pre-installed on the device? (you should, its a version of dolphin specifically built for the RP2+, it has a purple icon). Is it being launched by a 3rd party launcher like the Retroid launcher, or the Dig launcher? If so, then try launching it manually, setting the controls, saving settings if applicable, and then exiting the app, and then starting it up again to see if your controls stuck. Other than that I'm not sure what to suggest.
@@TechDweebYes, I'm using Dolphin for handheld and I'm launching through Dolphin. When I save the controller settings Dolphin confirms that it did save them. But the settings have all reverted back to the Retroid Pocket 2+ handheld settings the next time I use Dolphin. Thank you for your advice ! Does anyone else seeing this have the problem or a solution?
Oh Jesus.. Retroarch, the UI that makes Dolphin seem simple. There's a learning curve to it, it's cores are hit or miss, and the risk/reward for touching anything in the setting menus is bonkers. I find myself just using individual emulators that run way better like DuckStation.
Yeah you're not wrong! Every time I want to change settings I have to carefully think through what I'm doing and what is getting saved when I click which save button, and I commonly think to myself 'surely this is way more complex than it needs to be'.
@@TechDweeb Correct. I was using RetroArch on the Retroid Pocket 2 and set the confirmation button to something else not thinking that it would change the global UI functionality but it did. After that I just gave up.
Nice video! I saw that you got Panzer Dragoon running on it, but how well does it handle Saturn in general? My Anbernic RG351P I bought some time ago crashes HARD when it tries to emulate Saturn and a lot of these pocket emulators don't do a good job with it either, so it's surprising to that there's one now that can handle it without severe slowdown. I'd love to play NiGHTS on the go lol.
I don't think so. It's a Cortex A7 ARM chip on a MediaTek MT6580 chipset. I don't think SteamOS runs on ARM. But man, if there was a way to get SteamOS on this thing I'd do it in a heartbeat!
I think you are wrong. This device IS simple and straightforward. Its made to be easy to use right out of the box with the preinstalled apps and launcher. No its not as simple as turning it on and picking a game but once you have it setup you basically can just turn it on, pick the game, and away you go.
Yeah I figured it would. And Geforce Now. I don't have a decent internet connection, because I live in the desolate wilderness of northern Canada, so I didn't bother testing those.
[ some odd reason youtube deleted my post so I'll try to repost it word for word from memory. Thanks Suzan and the rest of your UA-cam staff your stupid censor system is amazing! :D /s ] I have the older version without the touch screen, and yeah its a bit of a turn off for me. I've barely touched the thing as there's more accessible and easier options on my shelf. I feel sad for the thing, really. I'm considering buying the upgrade parts (board and touch screen) from the Retroid website, and maybe from there I'll turn the device into a game design testing handheld for my Android projects. In the meantime I have the retroid Pocket 2+ just a few days from delivery followed by the Miyoo Mini. And just yesterday I got my Ayn Odin Pro in the mail which is my new Gamecube + PS2 + PSP goto! Ahh, delicious aspartame root beer never tasted so good in the mornings... [shlurps]
Oh man if you have this and the MiYoo coming to you soon, you've got some good gaming fun on the way! I'd LOVE to get the Odin Pro (or something similar) someday, the performance looks amazing and the actual device itself is a great design. That's probably my overall fav device in that price range. Although I have a hard time justifying the purchase of expensive portable devices because I rarely leave my mom's basement, my MiYoo mini is still my fav device, that's the one I grab for some Dragon Warrior in the tub or some Advance Wars in bed.
@@TechDweeb The Odin Pro + Retroid Pocket 2+ and Miyoo Mini will certainty be perfect for me this next month as I will be traveling to my dads in Mississippi and then to my girlfriend in Arkansas. These portables will be a godsend on those boring days when I'm not doing anything else in particular. Also they'll be nice when I go with my mother to her monthly doctor's checkup. There's just something about playing Gameboy Dr Mario or Jim Powers on the SNES while sitting in those dull gray waiting rooms at the doctors office.
The MiYoo mini is still my favorite retro handheld, even after getting this, for what it's worth. Get the Mini if portability is important to you, or if you like that form factor, get the retroid if you want to play some more advanced stuff, or if you think you will like the wider format. Honestly they are both great devices for the price.
@@TechDweeb Thanks for the reply, that's exactly where I feel stuck, do I want some more capability and flexibility or do I want to joyfully relive the DMG of my youth through the eyes of the Miyoo Mini, sigh. Thanks again and keep up the great work love the channel!
I'm mad at retroid! I bought the 2+, and shortly after the 2s came out. And this time they're not doing an up grade kit. Like they did with previous models.
Do you mean how they're mismatched? Yeah it's a little weird having a full size analog stick on one side and a slider on the other. I also don't like how far out the analog stick on the left pops away from the device, really takes away from the pocket factor.
I really looked at this device but, the hours needed to tweak stuff kind of was a turn off. Let me say this, I have Steam Deck on order, due Q3 so I was looking a interim device. I have ViTA and PSP but, emulation is broken up it, and not a great experience. I ended up going to a Miyoo Mini for now, it's cheap but, does up to PSX fine. I really wanted to love device and get one but, the TWEAKING needed just to run games seemed like a hassle. These type of devices are just a pickup and play, and Tweaking the heck out of games kind of defats the point of them.. Q3 is not too far away and then, I wont' even need to "stream" Nintendo Switch games, I can play them on the Steam Deck...
Good call on the Steam deck! I don't think I'm going to pull the trigger on that one, especially because I don't have any need for portable PC gaming since I don't really leave my dungeon of solitude in my mom's basement very often :P Honestly the MiYoo mini is still my favourite device. The Retroid is fun to tinker with, and it's nice to be able to play some N64 and saturn games, but the MiYoo mini is the perfect device for 16 bit era games. And it just WORKS! Which is the most important thing when you want to grab a gameboy and play some pokemon in the tub.
@@TechDweeb So I looked into it and I guess I am going back to the OLED Vita for now. N64 games are playable now, they were not a few years ago (well a good chunk of them) and all the PS games (PSP, Vita and PS1), never mind RetroArch for all the classic systems, I have not run into a game that it wont play.
As much as I wanted to see this review, I couldnt listen to your distorted(?) voice. If it is your real voice, I'm really sorry. if it isn't which is what Im assuming, I personally don't think it's necessary to distort it this way to make good reviews. I really was only able to skip through this and will sadly not come back. Since Im just 1 person - that's not a shame. I just thought I leave some well meant critic over here just because maybe it's not just me.

Man if Emulationstation came to native droid, that'd be a game changer!
@@TechDweeb launch box is for android and it scratches that itch better than dig ever did. Though they have yet to add a themes option the default theme looks clean
Love retriod. My only issue is brightness control at night. Lack of when turning it down. My 5 year old uses the pocket 2 plus to play roblox.
Hi. Sorry, where do you buy that for $99?
goretroid.com
for Retro handhelds and retro stuff in general, Tech Dweeb's the man (no, he's the Dweeb). The best in retro niche :/
😆 good vid champ.
They actualy have usb sim card adapters on amazon so you could use it as a phone but it would look wierd lol
I'm not sure tbh. I just copied over a ton of Saturn games, I'll be testing a bunch in the emulation vid. Stay tuned!
Isn't that x86 based? You can install steamos, or any other Linux based x86 os, if so.
I don't think so. It's a Cortex A7 ARM chip on a MediaTek MT6580 chipset. I don't think SteamOS runs on ARM. But man, if there was a way to get SteamOS on this thing I'd do it in a heartbeat!
@@TechDweeb yep, you're right. I just thought retroid was based on odroid x86 boards.
I think you are wrong. This device IS simple and straightforward. Its made to be easy to use right out of the box with the preinstalled apps and launcher. No its not as simple as turning it on and picking a game but once you have it setup you basically can just turn it on, pick the game, and away you go.
Sir may i request? Please do best budget/cheap handheld video ✨✨
Good idea! I could actually make that video because I buy all the cheap ones :P
@@TechDweeb thankyou! ❤️
This device also works well with Game Pass.
I have the older version without the touch screen, and yeah its a bit of a turn off for me.
Ahhhhh I don't know whether to get this or the Miyoo Mini! Help! What's your 2, 3, 4, or even 5 cents about it?
When retropocket3?
I wish I knew! I saw there was some info leaked, but no release date yet :/
You have colds or what
Allergies. Never ending allergies...
I'm mad at retroid! I bought the 2+, and shortly after the 2s came out. And this time they're not doing an up grade kit. Like they did with previous models.
Hench Herbivore sent me :D
Welcome to the nerd party :P
Is that Scott Malkinson?
Shhh. Don't tell anyone or they'll make fun of my Diabetes.
yes finally thanks man
More to come!
Are you a voice actor?
Nope. It's the amateur show over here :P
I live in the UK and all I'm seeing is £160 for the plus 2 model, this is way too expensive. Thought these are $99
Yeah, the company has stopped making them so now you can only find them being sold by 3rd party sellers at an inflated price.
I never likedd the oddly shaped Analog sticks on it
Do you mean how they're mismatched? Yeah it's a little weird having a full size analog stick on one side and a slider on the other. I also don't like how far out the analog stick on the left pops away from the device, really takes away from the pocket factor.
@@TechDweeb Ya That was a big eye sour for me for some reason
wow other reviews I seen made it seem like an underpowered ps1 emu that barely did dc or psp
What's the game at 24:23?
Dodonpachi on Mame
Pre-ordered the Retroid Pocket 3 which should be better despite what this UA-camr thinks about the screen and joystick, 😆.
Wished it can emulate gamecube
It's sort of can. The easier games.
@@TechDweeb Plss shoutout me
@@TechDweeb and greck the annoyance
@@TechDweeb I got the game for 30
@@TechDweeb but on mine it was too weak too emulate GameCube so only up to gameboy
I don't think I'm going to pull the trigger on that one, especially because I don't have any need for portable PC gaming since I don't really leave my dungeon of solitude in my mom's basement very often :P
Honestly the MiYoo mini is still my favourite device.
Hey Dweeb, how's it dweebin'?
9/10, will dweeb again.
@@TechDweeb dweeb me baby one more time
Nice Video
Seems like a great device, but can it play DOOOOOOOOMMMMM???
MAYBEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
when I got this a long time ago I thought it was great, now I have the 2s and this old one looks like crap
I got it for 30! Or not me my brother did
As much as I wanted to see this review, I couldnt listen to your distorted(?) voice.
I honestly appreciate the feedback :)
"HOW" Cause modern day phones are cheaper and run the games better
Is this your real voice? If not I suggest dropping the act.
This might be my favorite gaming channel except the really stupid voice gimmick absolutely destroys my desire to listen for more than 10 seconds.
I was intrested until I heard the voice and couldn't get past what I hope is an act. You lost me.
Cringe
