How To Remove and Replace Coolant Expansion Tank on BMW 335i

- The radiator overflow tank serves as the reservoir for engine coolant that is heated to its boiling point and would otherwise rise up and out of the radiator. Working in conjunction with a thermally activated spring built into the cap, the overflow tank creates a closed cooling system that is much more reliable and practical than previous designs. As the temperature and pressure rise to the coolant's boiling point under pressure, the cap spring activates and allows the heated liquid to flow up and into the overflow tank. The fact that the system is under pressure means that the liquid reaches a higher temperature before boiling, further increasing the effectiveness of the system.
If you had a low coolant warning light , the expansion tank may be one of the parts of the cooling system to blame.
If you work on any cooling parts, including the expansion tank, you must bleed the system/purge. Bleeding the cooling system involves removing trapped air that can clogg the radiator, water pump and so on. Trapped air can cause hoses to burst and also fail the expansion tank or blow head gasket . Reasons that a low coolant warning needs immediate attention.
Work notes:
Trapped air will have heater core blow cool air when temp is set at high. If you notice this repeat steps. Wait for engine to cool and "bleed the system"
1. fan on low heat on high
2. Add coolant to indicated marks never over fill
3. you can leave cap off or bleeder off to watch for bubbles purging
4 place cap back on start the vehicle
5 if you still have bleeder on ...release it and let the air out( you may lose a little coolant)////if you released bleeder before starting , wait for bubbles to go away...you may still lose a little coolant doing it this way....both ways work the goal is to remove trapped air out the system.
There is also an electronic way to bleed the system activating the electronic water pump so it can run itself to purge the cooling system of trapped air. This will allow you to bleed the system with out spilling any coolant. A battery charge would also help. The reason for the battery charger is to prevent the battery from draining while the water pump is activated. there would be no need to start vehicle with this method. ...I may do a video on this in the future.
6. Good idea to watch coolant temp in hidden service menu but not really required when the goal is to remove trapped air. You will know when your vehicle reached normal operating temp when fan is on. Hidden service menu ...coolant temp access:
• How To Check Engine Co...
7. Drive vehicle and make sure you heater works and you should be all set. If its blowing cold air then air is trapped in cooling system. At that point bleed system again.
8. Good idea to bleed system on an incline rather flat surface ....30degree jack stands or a slope really does help, but not required.
Use Bmw coolant with distilled water 50/50 mix
Good idea to use a coolant funnel even tho I did not in this video...this will prevent overspray of coolant.

Thanks for being so detail oriented and methodical. So many on here leave out critical steps assuming that the viewership knows everything. If we did, well, we wouldn’t be watching.
Just installed a new tank today on a 2007 BMW 335i. Shop quoted $350, I bought the tank off eBay for $38 so saved $312. Dealer cost is probably much higher.. Thanks Bimma for this post !!!
Link to the tank?
ECS tuning caries many aftermarket items that are about $50 new. I can't believe the shop quoted $350. You should start providing this service for $50 maybe plus the part and fluid.
This was really helpful! Had to empty out my coolant expansion so this was really easy to follow along with and the detailed instructions and shot made it so easy. Thanks heaps!
Awesome I followed your steps, and I was able to replace it with no problem, I have zero experience working with cars but you made it very easy by this video!!! Thank you!!
You were a big help for me today man. I was stuck and you can through man. Keep posting more videos. New subscriber
Best n55 diy video on coolant tank replacement. Better than all the others that popped up on my search.
Right ...i go by the Bentley repair manual instructions
Good job bro on explaining the steps.. really helpful, really needed that👌🏻👍🏻!
Thank you for this vid. Helped a whole bunch
No probs G
Just did mine. Thanks for the video bro.
Excellent video, great job of breaking it down Barney style, knocked this out in 15mins
My man, thanks so much for this video. I did this job yesterday on my 2006 330i. Two issues I ran into. Upper hose didn't fit snug on new tank (purchased from BMW) resulting in coolant spraying everywhere when I started the engine. So I used some plumbers tape around the tank threads and that solved that problem. Second was with the bleeder. Was hard to tell when bleeding was fulling complete as still had some coolant coming out through the bleeder after the bubbling stopped. I closed the bleeder, checked the heater and it was working and blowing hot air so figured I was straight. Coolant level was fine when I checked later. By the way, I have an electric water pump and didn't do the other procedure with the car off and external battery attached, etc. I hope that doing it your way in this video is fine since car is blowing hot air 🤷🏾♂. Thanks again.
Much Respect I did this Job in 45 Min including testing Thanks
Awesome video man! Really appreciate the help!
Nice video man. Thanks for sharing.
great tutorial mate thanks
thank you - I really appreciate your help
Thank you, bro! Appreciate it!
Super helpful bro!
nuff respect Trini. great video fire
I just swapped mine. You have way more room because I have the 2 vacuum boosters in the way. Getting the bottom hose off and on was a little tricky. Thanks for the video. You helped a lot. God bless #N54 #E93 #BMW #335i #SanDiego
Alfredo Diaz thanks 🙏🏽
My current problem
How did you get it off it’s driving me crazy!
Followed this almost exactly. Very simple project. Hope my leak is isolated to the tank.
You just saved me 623.47 thanks
very awesome video and good instructions, thank you.
Thank you. Perfect.
I liked that thank you
very,good thank,s amigo.
Thank you
Good video I'll be using this next week when my parts come in. Got a similar leak, right along that seam. I still have pressure in the system though when i uncap, and the coolant level isn't down much (haven't had a low coolant light). You think it's ok to drive? Assume I've been driving for a minute already with it like this...
Keep bmw coolant mixed with distilled water around in ya garage and to be safer just keep distilled water in your trunk because coolant is toxic
Hello there,
Thanks for the video it’s really helpful just one question pls after changing it did you have any smoke coming out of the engine while you driving cos I changed my one and after 2 days I took it for drive I put my foot down and I realised it was smoke coming out from the engine when I open the bonnet it was around the coolant tank area but it wasn’t leaking at all, do you think it’s the excess anti frizz that spilled while I was changing it and bleeding it or something else? Thanks
What does it smell like....if it smells sort of sweet maybe some coolant fell in the manifold area ....if it has a burnt kind of smell that may come in the Cabin while you driving then it may be the smell of oil that also may have leaked onto the exhaust manifold area....in that case vehicle could have a valve cover gasket leak....I would pressure wash the engine let it run after and drive for a while ....pull over then while the engine still running pop the hood and see if its still a burnt smell or a sweet coolant smell...if after the wash nothing happens the the coolant spill evaporated.
Other wise the vehicle needs to be checked for coolant and or oil leak...check my videos on valvecover job ...and coolant pressure test
Thank you! But I do have a question I followed the steps and did not get any coolant overspray when I released my bleeder.
WhetstoneJAX Media as long as you know for sure that no air is out the system...then your good...the heat is blowing hot air inside is one way to confirm....My coolant over spray happened mainly because i opened the bleeder too much in the beginning while the car was getting hot...but if i see overspray ...thats good too because the air only had one way to come out.
Where did you purchase your new coolant expansion tank?
thought this was an electric bleeding procedure where you hold pedal for 10 seconds and it activates the electronic bleeding
ok so I did this no leaking anymore but now a engine malfunction popped up, how do I fix that it was just the expansion tank nothing else was touched
Anybody know the o ring size? I lost mine removing the the bottom hose
I'm gonna clean up all of the old coolant before I reinstall the new tank. Thanks for the video though.
Neuguy69 If its time to change it ....then your better off
My bmw sensor leaking again and again even after replacement of full bottle and sensor . Don’t know why !
Can anyone guide ?
Hello, I followed your video to replace the tank. But when I was pulling out the clipper of the bottom hose, it came out of hose and flew inside the engine. I tried to find it and even vacuum it but no success. What do you suggest at this point? Should I just connect without clipper?
This is hard to believe ...do you mean that its somewhere around the engine bay?? ....because flew in the engine like you said is impossible 🤷🏽♂️ but if you need to look for anything medal around your engine bay...its best to use a long magnet tool....if that doesnt work replace the clip or hose. The clip may have fallin underneath undercarriage slash guard...best bet
Hi do you turn the engine or when adding water or just the switch and press just thr button

Great video, thanks! My only negative comment, put a new battery in your smoke detector! ;)
do i have to drain the radiator when changing expansion tank or it doesnt matter??
No unless you doing a whole coolant flush
@bimmajoc Hey man I hope to hear from you soon, I replaced my tank as well but once I installed the new one it leaks from the bottom hose right at the connection as if it were missing a gasket but it's not... what was that red sealant you used?? I would like to give it a try to see if it would create a gasket type seal around the bottom hose connection I dont wanna have to change that 3 way hose :(

Can i do the bleeding with engine is on? I dont want to run the battery alone ( not able to use battery charger) i think i got electric water pump as well. 2011 135i n55 engine
Yes Of course do it on….the electronic is just another option
Thank you so much 🎉🎉🎉
I really hope this is what is wrong with my car got a new water pump thermostat and radiator and I have a leak and I can’t find where Because is so minimum
check the edges of the expansion tank if you see water...or there is a leak detection dye you can use to find leaks with a fluorescing light
so i did this and i keep getting coolant level low on my dash but coolant is filled max. any ideas? thanks
You definitely have a leak...you have to do a pressurized test to find out where its coming from....could be the reservoir tank...radiator...fragile hoses... or even the orings from the hoses could be bad...but you have to get the pressure test done in order to know what to replace ...i did a vid on this ua-cam.com/video/9476cw9ByRk/v-deo.html
same here. It showed no leak after i replaced the tank but the light just doesnt stop to show up
do you know if you can replace the coolant level sensor without draining and removing the expansion tank itself? I have looked and I can't seem to find any details on replacing just the level sensor
What you should do is buy a fluid extractor it will automatically suck the fluid out the reservoir. Then you can replace the sensor easier (twist and turn). Then used the extractor fill back the fluid into the coolant tank and thats it....but still bleed the system after to avoid any complications. Bimma Joc ok so it is required to remove the tank to access the sensor? I’m coming from an e46 which I could access from underneath the car and not have to drain anything. Thanks for the feedback and the excellent diy.
But when you remove it the fluids going to come out
Bimma Joc true. For some reason on my e46 would not leak from that sensor when removed. I have an extractor so I will drain it. I guess what I should have asked is if I raise the car can I access the sensor from below without removing the tank? Thanks again for the quick reply. I subscribed to your channel
Ok well good luck and thanks
Whats the link to buy one of those coolant taks?
All the dislikes are from bmw dealers.😄😋👍
Thats right!!! 👍🏽
Can someone give me a part number or link me to a site for the lower radiator hose. I’m going threw hell trying to find it.
Matthew Bacigalupi www.ecstuning.com thats what i use
Hope you got the smoke detector battery replaced in the last 4 years or so.
Do you have to step on the gas pedal for 12 seconds? And wait 12 minutes for the whole bleeding procedure after you put the heater on?
If you have an electrical pump: yes. I was looking for a comment like this. You don't bleed like this guy did when you have an electrical pump.
1:58 , how did you remove the top hose?
The hose has a clip you detach very simple
I watched this procedure being done by an auto mechanic. He insisted that the motor should NOT be running while the bleeding process is underway. Now I am confused?
Koketso Mogobye i use the repair Manual so yes if you want to bleed the system the vehicle needs to get up to normal operating temperatures...you will know that when the fan starts to operate....if you dont do this air pockets will not be removed and heater will not work up to par
Koketso Mogobye you can also use the water pump ua-cam.com/video/N6qkME07omM/v-deo.html
Koketso Mogobye cant bleed the cooling system with out car running...that doesn’t make sense 🤷🏽♂️
Thank you for the clarification, BJ. I will be doing that this week.
That makes a lot more sense. Air pockets can blow head gaskets I hear.
335i? They come with a 4 cylinder now?
Michael Mir no 335i is inline 6 328s have the 4 now
Is bleeding the coolant necessary ?
yes , must remove any trapped air , otherwise system can fail, burst. Trapped air also causes cool air when heat is turned up.
anytime work is done, replacing any part of the system bleeding is an order
ua-cam.com/video/N6qkME07omM/v-deo.html
Thanks man I appreciate it! I plan on replacing my expansion tank as soon as as my tank comes in. I wasn’t aware of flushing the coolant after any cooling system repair thank once again.
Julio Zavala you might not have to flush just mix coolant 50 50 mix with distilled water and add to required marks...do not over fill tank and check whenever engine cold...only work when engine is cold
I did this and as soon as I turned on the car smoke started to come out
Steam??? That could be for many reasons watercoolant drop to the exhaust manifold ...
Hey Guys I did it my self just watching this video if I can do it anybody can do it. Thanks
Yeeeahhha‼️🙏🏽
Hi, i drive 2009 bmw e90 325i inline 6 gasoline.
I’ve a problem with low coolant level.
When the car is cool or ideal coolant level is ok.
But when i drove car for say 20-30 kms it start showing low coolant levels.
But when i came home after 20-30 mins i checked the coolant box it has optimal levels of coolant in it.
Whenever i drive more than 20-30 kms it start showing low coolant warning and their is not significant coolant leak i can’t find any coolant leak.
Pls help me with my query
Do you suggest for new coolant level sensor
Check the level first ...add coolant or distilled water to required marks...never over fill ...then if happens very soon again....have the system checked...use a flashlight to look for any water down by the front passenger side near coolant tank...look for a powder coat on coolant tank
Anupam Singh sensor maybe good ...water evaporates so low coolant signs after months of driving is normal
Anupam Singh so if you do see water ...have the system pressurized so they can find out where a leak is coming from and replace that part
BMW VEHICLE CHECK / BASIC INSPECTION ua-cam.com/video/kKMn-wjo_84/v-deo.html
Hey where did you get the tank from?
TopDollarLuxury Life www.fcpeuro.com they are great and have lifetime warranty
How much coolant did you use?
I don’t remember but i know it had to have been less then a gallon because the concentrate gets mixed 50/50 with distilled water
@@BimmaJoc Thanks. Did you also fill the coolant while the car was on/in accessory with the heat on?
Raj Brar no ....when the vehicle is (cold) again...(next day) check the levels to make sure its at the indicated marks ....if its not top it to required marks or if its over... use a fluid extractor to take some out
Raj Brar adding fluid with vehicle on is dangerous that should never even happen
Raj Brar in matter of fact ...the bleeding process electronically can be done with the cap on and then when its done check the heat if its blazing hot then the process is complete......when i did this video i did the bleeding process electronically with cap off ONLY for demonstration both ways are fine but cap on is recommended in the books
The bag was useless
Yo get a new Purge screw I got one in brass for like seven bucks trust me
The new tank came with it..i like the idea of brass tho ...but i dont need it 🤷🏽♂️
My dealer tried to charge me 700$ to fix this
Right ....way too much
WAO Bro, yeah some of these mechanics out there think that everybody is rich just because we have a BMW and sometimes is because maybe somebody gave it to you or you just bought it at a pretty cheap deal. That´s outrageous how they try to rip you off because that is what they try to do. Is incredible! Damn, that is a week's pay for many people. And yeah, the part is all you need and a little time, new coolant, patience and that´s it. On that $700.00 labor, I just can't understand how somebody is that way; to try and still your money. Damn!! Good luck! And watch out for people like that. Always ask. Cheers!!!
Fire alarm needs new batteries
Stephen Small lmao done 🤣🤣🤣
:) Hey so I don't need to fully drain my radiator fluid? Just the expansion tank?
Stephen Small right ...then return back to required levels and bleed cooling system
Stephen Small ua-cam.com/video/N6qkME07omM/v-deo.html
Why can't BMW make a decent tank, they fail on all their cars. My 4 year old M4 is getting one today.
Right
Jack Ostrander so they can make money from parts
Cheep plastic crap typicall BMW
Actually its ok....sometimes its user error can happen....like putting too much coolant....in the tank ....forexample...you would never know what these used car shops who know nothing about bmws would do ...
Excellent video question if am installing a new radiator and a new expansion tank can I bleed the system once after installing the two parts?
ua-cam.com/video/lel5CINXKAQ/v-deo.html Right thats what ya need to do ...get a bucket and mix the bmw coolant with distilled water half and half first
My coolant is full but my coolant light keeps showing up I just replaced the water pump, oil cooler seals and o rings as well as radiator hoses. Any idea what could be wrong ?
May be programing needs to get done of waterpump...are there any other issues
@@BimmaJoc no further issues just the coolant light, no leaks or nothing
Ok so next thing is to hook it up to a scanner to find the exact issue....could be thermostat...coolant sensor...or just simply the water pump needs to be programmed by bmw(maybe)
