    Any time I see either of these two jamming with another guitarist they always have the biggest smiles on their faces. Just seems like they check their egos at the door and just enjoy the music thoroughly. And let’s face it, these two have every right to have enormous egos if they were so inclined. Two of the best.

      Hard to argue. Nothing against Paul, he’s one of my favorites and it’s really hard to find to fault with any of their playing. That being said there’s something about Andy’s phrasing and musicality that just resonates with my ears better. Of course I’d give my left nut to be able to play a tenth as good as either of them.

      @@josephpeccerillo1640 So true- me too- I'm working at it year after year to approach what Andy seems to do like he breathes- but still- worth the pursuit. I'm just always so amazed at the tone he gets- I have literally all the same gear- and yeah it's close- but his phrasing is just epic! Happy New Year man!

      He can still shred but has shown a bluesier side to his playing. He has such freedom to play anything, no matter how technical it is, but it's not mindless shredding to show how brilliant he is, there's melody, humour and passion conveyed to the listener. He has continued to push the boundaries of what we expect him to do.

    It's amazing to hear such tasteful music from shredders, where the focus isn't on speed but on the lines, phrases, motifs, and ideas they pull together on the spot for an improvisation.
    Anyone can learn to play fast, but not everybody can learn to play with taste. It's always pleasing to hear people play with taste.

      @Mr.CliffysWorld 3 роки тому +1

      @@budgiecat2885 ...Hell yeah ! 'Tastey licks' ! Live it .gonna steal that one . Sorry . Budgie Cat ..... I grew up in a music store , started playing guitar at 5 and been in bands since I was 13-14 and in 47 years I can assure you that there certainly is "mindless shredding" I hate to throw a name under the bus but a good example is back in the late 80's or early 90's I saw Vinnie Vincent's Invasion & sadly he had quite a few mellower, slower tempo songs and when he'd play the solo all it was, was all chaos and triplets and 16ths, I was all WTH.... IT Was like ....
      "Hey ! look what I can do !" ... and I liked/like vinnie and all but those solos not only distracted and did not fit the song but they .... well.... sucked ... And ruined the song . There is more to music than just speed , distortion & volume. Songs will write themselves if you let them by staying true to their form and feeling . Music has (or should) color & texture & a style & a feel . I've also taught guitar for about 38 years and I always try to impress that on them early when they compose a song, they are impressive to watch but they can not really function as a cohesive part of a band with out learning that lesson, because they're just ,as Gary Moore once called them, bedroom guitarists, so, stay loyal to your creation...
      I have a dozen students who can shred like anyone and they can't figure out why they are not more popular, and have a harder time getting into bands than they feel they should and it's because they never took the time to learn to compose, mostly within the parameters of their own song, and it shows in an audition . It's more like a lab experiment going rogue on the villagers . It really meant no harm , just doesn't know better, songs can be that way also Because it was never taught how to behave . A song can be the same, if you don't nurture it in the style, feel. & spirit it was meant and try to push it into something unfamiliar or alien the usually react poorly..
      Who was it who said ? ...
      "A great musician doesn't know when to play , but when NOT to play" , sometimes the 'unplayed notes' are the most important because people like to read between the lines . Go up and play a jazz-fusion tune then suddenly, at the solo, it's a heavy metal solo and it makes people subconsciously suspicious because it didn't " go where it should have "or where THEY felt it should have, is usually what they REALLY mean. I'm all for crossing genres, being creative and giving a song your "flavor" and putting your "stamp" on it, Alien Ant Farms version of "Smooth Criminal" immediately comes to mind . Sure they put a punk/grunge feel to it but the message still came thru, just be sure to stay true enough to the song that the message is NOT lost . Be creative but be aware as to whether you are really just putting your stamp on a classic out of love and respect for the song or cuz your ego wants to force it to your style and not keep true to its message, or even ask yourself . " Am I really improving it without interefering with it's core and feeling? Or am I ruining it cuz my ego thinks my way is better ?" See ? It's really just a question of your honesty .
      Yeah your honesty. Glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity . Yeah !
