Subaru Impreza Crosstrek Forester Automatic Shifter Replacement
Вставка
- Опубліковано 20 лип 2024
- Today I will show you guys how to replace your stock Automatic shifter on a Subaru Impreza 2.0i, Forester, Crosstrek with a Sport shifter. The entire process will take you no more than 20 minutes and will require a Phillips and Flathead screwdriver.
UPDATE AS OF 6/18/20 - The Links no longer work. I recommend contacting your local Dealership for the Part Number. The Automatic Shifter Replacement comes from the Premium/Limited Trim CVT Impreza (2012-2015)/Forester (2014-2018) models and should be broken down to 3 main components: CVT Leather Shifter Boot, Shifter Trim Console, and Leather Shift Knob (optional).

I did this on my 2015 some time ago. Glad to see that a video howto was finally uploaded. Yep it looks a million times better. And single handed!
Where I can get it to buy
Thanks for making this video, I recently took my 2017 Impreza to the dealership to replace the radio because it was starting to get cracks under the glass display and when they took out the old radio they scratched up the shifter knob on my car, I was worried it might be a huge complicated process to get the part they scratched replaced but it doesnt look too bad
Used the link to buy the same shifter, followed your instructions, & everything worked. Only took me 15 minutes! Pretty good, seeing it’s my first auto upgrade/mod that I did myself ever. Thanks Tom! Hope you are enjoying your WRX
Thank you brotha. I'm glad my video was helpful towards your install. It definitely makes a difference in terms of overall feel and quality by simply replacing the plastic pieces.
As for my WRX, I absolutely love it! Aside from it being a sedan, the WRX answers everything I wanted when I had my Impreza. The oomph was really all I was asking for and the WRX delivered. I'm still one of the handful of folks who have not yet modified their WRX. I remind myself where I came from, and the WRX is plenty fast to get me in trouble.
TomVangTV I just have a 2012 Impreza base model. It’s paid off, not under warranty & only has less than 60k miles on it(I just work a lot lol). I have no interest in going fast or powerful, I just want to spruce up the car & improve the “creature comforts” as you say, since I plan on driving it for another 5 years. I’m 50 & putting the money I would’ve been paying out for a car payment towards retirement, & dressing up my car is fun for me right now. Thanks for the inspiration!
@@Squazzoo68 Does this fit a 2013 Impreza Premium with NA engine? Everywhere i look for this part# for the boot itself, it says doesnt fit
Nice! Literally was just searching for that shifter in my area. Subbed.
I'm going to do this down the road. Just grabbed a 2017 Forester and I'll see how long I can stand looking at the plastic trim. I did have the XT some time ago and do appreciate the leather boot 100x better. Thanks for the quick tutorial! Will be referring to this in the future!
Best decision I ever made. My ‘15 Impreza looks a lot sportier and feels better in the hand too.
King Troll yeah I felt that too. Wasn’t sure if I was overthinking it haha. It feels a little nicer like a short shifter
Thank you! I fixed my car because of you! The key was stuck so I used a paperclip to make it think its always in park
Do you know what part numbers you ordered?
Thank you so much for doing this vid, i absolutely hate those cheap looking shifter plates on automatics and Subaru is one of the few automakers left that are still not offering a shift lever boot across their model range.
Jesus Ramirez you're welcome my good friend. I'm glad it helped clean up your exterior a little and for you to have a less plastic feel.
@@TomVangTV I owned an 2013 Subaru impreza 2.0i base model Will it fit my car?
@@jesusquiroz4241 Yes it will. My Impreza at the time I made this video was a 2012. Your model falls in the same platform generation.
@@TomVangTV thanks!
What about the model before? 2011. The 4eat
This is awesome! Thanks for posting! Just bought a 2019 Crosstrek Premium and I"m not a fan of the plastic shift knob. I don't mind the plastic shift plate as much as I mind the plastic knob. Found a nice black leather one with orange stitching for $20!
did it work for the 2019 crosstrek? im thinking of doing the same to mine
I’m in the same boat! Anyone have any updates? I would love to do this for my crosstrek...any advice on part numbers to get would help!
At first I didn't mind the plastic shift plate. But then summer came and when driving around the noon time the sun would bounce off it and no matter what I would do (short of putting my hand over the plate cover or setting something on it) I'd get a glare in my face making for a pain to drive. Been looking for options to address this and here I am. Anyone actually try this upgrade in the 2019 Crosstrek?? I'm tempted to just buy it and try it to see if it works myself as I like the look of this option better than painting or vinyl wrapping the shift plate.
Holly crap. I was looking for the way to replace the bulb. Now i know how. Thx bro. Good video 👍
It works the same for an impreza 2014. Right?
THANKS FOR THE VIDEO I DID THIS TO MY 16 CROSSTREK PREMIUM AND WORKED PERFECTLY PART #35133SG010 AND PART# 35180SG032
Hello, will the 2018 wrx shifter fit 2015 crosstrek? i tried searching but didn't get a definite answer. thanks for the video btw
Do you think it will fit xv 2015 if you successfully fited it on your car even though it belongs to forester 🤔
Hello. Do you know if this kit fits on a crosstrek or XV 2018 2.0i? Or do you have the dimensions or drawings of the piece?
I want to do the same in my '18 crosstrek. The premium has the tacky one and I want to put the limited one on. I just can't find it in the catalog
The link that you put to the boot also includes the shift indicator panel?
Looks Nice Bro. I just put a leather strap on the Shifter on my 15’ Impreza.
Eugene 12 how does it look like?
TomVangTV Not as Good as yours :) What’s your E-mail Bro. Would like to share a few picks of my Subaru, Basic just like yours.
Eugene 12 TomVangTV@gmail.com.
For those wondering it is part numbers 35180SG032 and 35133SG000
Thanks for the great video. Will that work on a 2006 Baja?
The replacement job actually takes about 15 minutes. And to remove the console from around your shifter just grab the console lip in front of the shifter, by the tray compartment underneath the radio..
Will it fit on a 2007 Subaru impreza??
Dope video. Keep it up buddy.
Awesome video. Would this work on the model before this impreza? 2011
Great video! I am planning to do it in 2014 crosstrek. Are you planning to replace your car stereo? Thanks.
Hi Harol. I don't own my 2012 Subaru Impreza HB 2.0i any longer. I now have a 2018 Subaru WRX. And yes I replaced the stock infotainment system on my current WRX with an Android Head Unit and it's awesome!
What if the light went on the letters? Is there a way to repair that or need a new unit?
Would it work if I have a 2008 Impreza 2.5i and used a 2008 wrx shifter center console
Any idea if this will work with a 2016 crosstrek?
Hi Tom! Nice to see your video when I looked up online and I have subscribed it. I have a question for you to see if you could help out there. I just spilled some water into the gear shifter area and it absorbed in. My car is 2021 Subaru Forester. I’m wondering does it matter? What should I do if it does?
Thank you in advance!
awesome video. Thanks!
what year is the part you are installing and specifically the model
Where did you buy the sports shifter?
Same steps on a 2018 Subaru forester?
Hi, i saw that you have worked on sti’s and crosstreks. Most parts in the interior is interchangeable.. question is have you ever wondered if you can do a front end conversion(fender, bumper, hood) from sti to crosstrek
Anthony F Hi Anthony. Front end conversion yes will be possible. However you will need the front fenders from the WRX/STI. Yes on hood but it’ll be non-functional since you don’t have a turbo and an intercooler. There may be some slight adjustment needed for the headlights but I youre doing the full conversion, I believe you can also swap the head lights.
TomVangTV oh yeah i forgot to add sti headlights.. it should be all bolt in right and no mod needed? I know hood wont be functional.. i just loved the 15-18 sti front curious gow it will look on the crosstrek. Thanks!
Great job! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Now that the link for the part is dead now, anyone with some fresh information?
Do they have this for the Right hand drive Impreza ?
Great Video very Helpfull thanks a lot
Do you know of a specific adapter for this to make it threaded for an aftermarket shift knob? I have an automatic 2020 Impreza.
billetworkz makes a cvt adapter for newer subaru's
Just purchased the Trim kit for my 14. Do you have information on the center console swap? Ive got the tan interior and also would prefer the black console of the WRX.
The black center consoles from the 11-14 WRX's and the 15-18 WRX's fit the 12-16 Impreza 2.0i perfectly. The only thing to be aware of are the metal frames that the screws are placed through to keep it in place are slightly different. On the impreza, the 2 screws are on the sides on the rear seat side vs the WRX consoles where the 2 screws are inside the consoles. You will have to order the brackets from Subaru or find one from a salvaged WRX off craigslist. But it's a simple plug and play. The door cards, the WRX seats (all) are also compatible and a simple plug and play.
Which trim kit? The link didn’t work
Does anyone know what thread size the shifter is?
will it work for 2018 subaru crosstrek?
Hey Tom do you know how to turn the map lights as dome lights? In other words three lights will turn on when you open the doors.
King Troll I’m not sure what I’m getting what you’re asking. The cabin lights?
TomVangTV yes. I am talking about the cabin lights.
I wonder if we can just leave it to Park instead of Drive while installing this?
Someone help me please!!! I accidentally lost the tiny metal piece and I don’t know what it’s called so I can order a replacement 😭
Awesome video. Now, where to get those parts?
I have a Forester, thank you.
Same here - 2018 Forester 2.5i Premium
How do you remove the sport shifter.
Would this fit on a 2013 crosstrek?
I'm having problems finding these. Can anybody confirm that the following part numbers are correct: 35180SG032 for the indicator and 35133SG000 for the boot?
sweet vid thanks
Going to buy a 2018 Crosstrek premium do you think i could do this swap with the same part even tho its a newer model year?
Rolando Ortiz Hi Rolando and welcome to my channel! I have yet to see the interior of the new Crosstreks. I’m not sure if it will be an exact fit. I believe they made changes to the new models after 2017+. Feel free to reach out if you ever have any questions. I’ll do my best to answer them!
Hi, have a 2013 Subaru Impreza 2.0 but it's a RHD...is there a link for the shifter for that type?
Thank you for this
You're welcome. I apologize for the delay. FedEx took a bit longer than usual due to the weather conditions on the East Coast.
TomVangTV definitely worth the wait
The link to the product appears to be for the shifter boot only. Where does can you get the panel itself? Either piano black or carbon fiber? I've very much like to get rid of that dipped faux chrome, but not sure where a replacement panel itself can be ordered. I imagine you would need to order a panel and the shifter boot as two separate products.
The gloss black piece you're referring to is included as a two-piece combo when I purchased it myself (at the time of this video install).
Now that I own a WRX, we have limited selections as well, especially in the aftermarket for these pieces. Most of anything and everything are stickers or 3m type of items. If there are replacement parts, they're usually pretty pricey.
@@TomVangTV This seems to be the only place I can find the gloss black panel itself.
www.ebay.com/itm/OEM-2015-18-Subaru-CVT-Shift-Selector-Indicator-Panel-Impreza-WRX-NEW-35180SG032/323328133871?fits=Year%3A2018%7CModel%3AForester%7CMake%3ASubaru&epid=2114599689&hash=item4b47dbcaef:g:M0sAAOSwd8ZbOpu5
That's a bit pricey, IMO. I think you can try contacting your local dealership and see if they're willing to get you it for a lot cheaper.
Where i can buy it? For a impreza 2022? Pls help
Do you remember by any chance the year and part number for the new plate/boot?
Daniel Angilello I was just searching right now, I honestly can’t find it, Im frustrated rn
Is that link in the description for the whole piece or just the boot?
It’s only for the boot and assembly, not the whole shifter trim.
can anybody tell me how much the part is supposed to cost in the US
is there a video out there like this for 2010 imprezas?
I don't believe so.
Yo Ik this is an old vid but does anyone know if this works on an 04 wrx?
Will this piece fit a 2009 Forester? Also can you get it in a lighter color scheme. The stock shifter in this car looks pretty bad.
I don't think so. The 09 Forester's transmission design is different. It zigzags like a Z whereas the later models are shaped like an L.
@@TomVangTV I was afraid of that. Thanks for the reply.
Is this part available for RHD?
STI seats? are those the RECARO brand STI seats?>
Anybody got a link for this exact shifter? I’m thinking I can do it with the 2016 crosstrek model
Same thinking for my 2014
Hi great video. Just wondering if this will work for a 2015 forester non turbo?
57sbautista81 yes the shifter comes from a 2014+ forester. It’s compatible
TomVangTV OK thanks. Because on the link for the product it says for xt model only and with paddle shifters.
Is your vehicle a manual transmission or automatic CVT?
TomVangTV cvt/non turbo
I wonder if this works for the G4 Impreza? Hmmmm...
Dude the stock silver shifter panel is blinding when the light comes in at certain angles. I definitely need to replace it.
Will it fit on a 2018 subaru forester 2.5i premium?
No it will not.
Hi does anyone know if this will fit in the Australian model of the 2012 Subaru XV? I assume it's the same but some things are different in the Australian models.
Hi Nicholas, I apologize I am unfamiliar with the models outside of the US. Otherwise I'd give you my input.
@@TomVangTV Thanks tom for the reply. It looks very similar. I think it is the same. trying to find the product in Australia is harder than I thought it would.

were you still in Drive gear while you were switching the old to new shifter boot?
Aisha Aparis yes. The car was on but the engine was not. Also have the E-brake up.
i see. i’m planning to change mine and it’s my first mod.
It's very easy and will take you about 20 minutes tops. Don't take it to the dealership. They have no clue what they're talking about and will overcharge you.
Can I get the part number for the shifter the link isn’t working for me
He says it comes from a forester sport
I have a 14’forester xt with cvt, will this work for mine.?
Yes. I did same for my 2014 XT Touring.
what part number?
I have no paddle shifters. Should I get the one made for without paddle shifter or will this one work?
No if your Impreza didn't come with paddle shifters, you won't need to. Do you have a picture of your Impreza's interior? If I'm not mistaken, it should fit yours. I'm not too sure how the interior differs from your Impreza and the 2.0i's.
Mine is the base 2015 2.0i. But I don’t have paddle shifters I just don’t know if it will make a difference if I get the one made for manual mode or if I should get the one made for without paddle shifters.
@@brandonhoughtlin8887 Is your Subaru a manual transmission? If so, this will not work on it. Starting with this Impreza 2.0i platform, the only 2 options are manual transmission and CVT automatic.

Yea I need change my shifter I have a 06 Impreza automatic I hate the look of the shifter
Can this gear shift fit a Subaru legacy 2010
I don't believe so. I believe the earlier generation Legacy has a different interior design.
You should get a tri pod and just post the camera on passenger seat while you work
Part number, links please anyone ?
Will this work on 2013 subaru Impreza sport 2.0I?
Devahn Grant yes it will.
TomVangTV thanks boss
Devahn Grant this is a very easy install, which will take you less than 15-20 minutes. I recently helped a subscriber install this on her car. TomVangTV thank you. The only issue I'm having is finding a shift boot for a right hand drive because the one listed is for a left hand drive

will this application work with a 2015 impreza 2.0i ?
Mr , Fun Guns Hutchinson yes, it will work with the Impreza 2.0i from 2012-2015. The 2016+ has a different center console. This will also be compatible with a Crosstrek
Thanks for your reply
Mr , Fun Guns Hutchinson no worries brotha. It’s a quick and easy install. It definitely makes a difference and it feels a little more uplifting to have a quality looking shifter.
I have a 16' sedan, what shifter will work with it? Thanks!
Erick G. Yes it should. The 2017+ received a refresh so the interior design is different.
Will it fit an 08 Impreza?
I do not believe so.
Hi where can i purchase one a for right drive
If you're located outside the US, I believe you can get this item through your dealership. Since this is an OEM item, I would assume your dealership is directly able to order this from their factories. The website to where I bought mine from is directly from a US Subaru Factory. I hope this helps!
@@TomVangTV thanks
Will this work with the 2008 model?
Unfortunately no. This will only work for the Impreza hatchbacks from 2012-2016.
@@TomVangTV thanks
Did you leave your car on for the whole process?
Yes but the whole process should take you no more than 10-15 minutes. The only time you need to turn the car on is to remove the shift knob/bezel and have it dead center.
TomVangTV I wanted to take mine apart to clean it because I spilt coffee all inside of it is there anyway I don’t need to leave it on the whole time?
The same thing happened to me once too. It left a brown coffee stain around my plastic center console piece. No, you won't need to leave the car on for the whole duration.
Are these all interchangeable no matter the year?
I have a 2019 Impreza and would like to swap out the shifter for one of them tasty Crosstrek jaunz.
No, this is compatible for the 2012-2016 Impreza hatchbacks. I believe the 2019+ is on the new Global architecture.

TomVangTV well I’m about to buy an entry level 2015 Impreza sport and it doesnt have the steering wheel with its bells and whistles
It's a very good and reliable car. Just be aware of certain things before you commit to buying it:
-Cabin noise is quite annoying after a while of ownership. Everything rattles and you can hear droning, especially after about 45 mph.
-MPG is good, but fair for an AWD vehicle. I averaged 30 city/freeway driving like a granny.
-The car is slow - especiallu from zero, don't expect to be able to get on the freeway as easily as an accord, civic, or camry/corolla.
-Subaru paint quality is very poor. Front bumper will get lots of dings.
But overall, it's a very nice looking car, very practical and easy to work on - simple maintenance, etc. Hatchback trunk space is awesome, especially with fold down rear seats. And remove the charcoal filter immediately when you get the car.
I wasn't aware until I was watching your videos about that factor but I believe just like I would have to commit of doing mods to it to get it as comfortable as possible but I like your mods
Whitson Williams no worries. Feel free to email me if you ever encounter any issues. I’ve owned the car for 3 years and did all of the maintenance myself aside from the 100k fluid flushes. I know this car very well and as long as you keep up with the oil changes every 6k and the filters every 15k, you’ll never have to worry about maintenance
That's what she said...
I am facing issue with shift lock every day. Can it be resolved by doing things described in the video?
Harin Patel yes you can follow the steps to examine the shifter and see if there’s anything wrong with the joints or shift points. After that, if not resolved, then you can proceed with a mechanic.
what do you mean by “shift lock”?
i think there are 2 problems associated with the impreza/crosstrek shifter, one is a brake switch recall, and the second is the park zone switch in the shifter, which prevents the key from coming out of the ignition.
Looks loads better than stock cheapo one, but GOD is it a fingerprint magnet .......
the product says for turbo only????
Skylar Young not sure what you mean. The shifter isn’t affiliated with the turbo.
bought!! and I know this is so crazy, but could I pay you to install it for me?? (I live close-ish to you) mechanics and Subaru and charging too damn much and I am not confident enough....
Skylar Young you don’t need to pay me brotha. Shoot me an email @TomVangTV@gmail.com and I’ll connect with you personally.
5:38 throwing out hints to the ladies lol
Seriously considering this 😅 I hate the stock one
Anyone have seller in Ali express or eBay?
For Impreza 2014
How much to get one piece of little fucking plastic out
i love the look but its not worth almost $200 lol
No. Just embrace it's an automatic. You're not fooling yourself or anyone else. Love your automatic, accept your automatic for what it is. Don't try and hide it with a leather *cough* shift *cough* boot.
Lol! I've encountered a few of these guys at meets before. It was quite embarrassing. I felt bad for them...technically it was their own fault for putting themselves into that type of situation. I'm glad to be out of a paddle-shift automatic. If i were to drive auto again, it would be a normal auto.
@Joe Joe most new automatic cars nowadays come with a leather wrapped shifter boot - because it looks nicer. This is swap isnt done to "feel" like your driving a manual, its done because it just looks so much better.
Stop making an Auto look like a weird Manual.
If you want a Manual look = Drive a Manual
if you didnt want an ugly shifter you should've bought a better subaru
