Took my old man out to see this. We wanted to go out to the movies but he didn't know what he wanted to see. I told him "hey, I heard there's this new movie with Deniro and Pacino together for the first time." He had an absolute blast.
The big shootout in this film is maybe the greatest of all time. The coordination had to be nuts. And Mann had everyone using full load blanks, so the guns were realistically loud. He said it sounded like hell on earth. When they were cutting the movie, he previewed the mix, and they'd done what they always do in Hollywood...replaced all the location sound with sounds effects. Mann was baffled and furious. He insisted they use the actual location sound, and mix the gunshots LOUD. Don't quiet them down to the same level as a shout, like they do in other movies. Gunshots are LOUD, mix them LOUD. Don't damage the viewers' hearing, obviously, but let them feel the echos of those shots reverberating off the buildings. And that's what really makes that scene feel like an urban war zone.
Unrealistic gunfire sounds in films is something that really bugs me. They're always too quiet, and they rarely show anyone temporarily lose their hearing from firing guns without ear safety.

Loved your reaction as always J!! The movie was actually based on the true story of Neil McCauley, a calculating criminal and ex-Alcatraz inmate and was originally going to be a tv show but was rejected. As of July 2022, a sequel is apparently in the works. Al Pacino’s interesting take of method acting for his character was that he was always on high on cocaine. Marking the first time that Deniro and Pacino actually shared the screen, the time was very limited…….so I have to ask you, have you seen Righteous Kill? That is a badass Pacino/Deniro movie with more than 3 minutes of shared screen time!! Hope your elbows good and you got that fly ;)

Adamson went on to write TV scripts after retiring, and if I remember rightly, he collaborated with Mann on the original version of this script (when it was going to be a TV series).

I had to double check to make sure I saw Bud Cort in this movie. Bud Cort was Harold in Harold and Maude. I would love to see J react to that movie. I have watched that movie ten or twelve times. My older brother introduced me to that movie many years ago.
You might get a kick out of this since you watched Silence of the Lambs, the guy you recognized from The Fast and the Furious (Ted Levine) is also the same dude who played Buffalo Bill. It seems like after Silence, he just said "only cop roles from now on." If you're looking for another cold-blooded De Niro flick, Ronin is underrated but very good.
31:08 I watch Heat in its entirety every month or so on long haul flights, but I have your version of it downloaded onto my iPad for short haul flights, and this part makes me laugh every time. "THIS m'fker, man" 😂🤣
If you’re interested, Michael Mann’s first theatrical movie is kind of a smaller version of this from just the criminal perspective. It’s called Thief starring James Caan (Sonny Corleone). It’s not as “slick” as Heat, but if you like watching the evolution of filmmakers and like this movie it’s a much watch.
Such a great movie with amazing acting. Glad you enjoyed it man. You are 100% correct. That scene at the Diner is Fkn amazing. One of the greatest acting scenes ever!
You can notice in a few scenes here, Val Kilmer has a weird growth on his elbow. It's a cyst from an injury he received while playing Jim Morrison in The Doors.
This is one of my favorite movies. I love the score, DeNiro, Pacino, Studi, the fact that Michael Mann did it and so forth. The thing that always killed me about this movie is Chris Shiherlis. He jumped in because he needed the money because he was flat broke and gambled his money away and cratered out his family so they did the job. They might have gotten away and I know there wouldn't have been any more movie but he just couldn't let it go. That last scene with those two particular people just guts me every time.
@17:20 "I'm telling you that's how Deniro talks to his kids!" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I'm dying.... But you're probably right though. Love this movie. Comes down to two totally driven men who can't help but give 200% to what they do, to the detriment of all other aspects of their lives. They are the same personality. Excellent at what they do but destructive to the rest of their lives and relationships.
Remember the bank heist in GTA V, The guy who gave Michael the information and blueprints on the bank was identical to the guy in this movie who gave them all the information, even his house looks the same.
Fun fact. Up until that scene at the diner, all the movies they’ve acted in together that was the first time they were on the screen at the same time. Face to face. It’s one of my fav scenes in cinema all time. Great acting
Haysbert's character haunts me a bit, and I think he's maybe the real reason for what this movie is about. It's about criminals. Why do they do what they do? Maybe it's because, when they're on parole, TWENTY-FIVE PERCENT of their paycheck goes back to their employer. And Haysbert is lucky to have a sugarmama who loves him and helps him stretch out his sub-poverty paycheck!
"I say what I mean, and I do what I say." Fun Fact: The coffee shop scene sold Robert De Niro on the idea of making the film. He, Al Pacino, and Michael Mann later admitted that they couldn't wait to shoot that one scene. Just Do It Live Fact: In an interview with Al Pacino on the DVD Special Edition, Pacino revealed that for the scene in the restaurant between Hanna and McCauley, Robert De Niro felt that the scene should not be rehearsed so that the unfamiliarity between the two characters would seem more genuine. Michael Mann agreed, and shot the scene with no practice rehearsals. Gun Enthusiast Fact: Rather than dubbing in the gunshots during the bank robbery shoot-out, Michael Mann had microphones carefully placed around the set so that the audio could be captured live. This added to the impact of the scene, because it sounded like no other gunfight shown on-screen.
Things worked out where they didn't need Weingrow but things don't always go as planed so you need to be prepared for those eventualities. It shows how thorough Neil is. Even if it's an unlikely scenario he's prepared for it.
@@J_EOMReacts Well he got a recommendation from someone were meant to believe is a trusted source so I get that. But the fact Neil didn't do some background himself is a real stretch. He'd know that the cops get leverage on people and have them stand for an undercover.
Early in the movie DeNiro was talking to a tall bald guy with a bushy beard and you mentioned how big his hands were. He played Francis Dollarhyde in Mann’s version of Red Dragon called Manhunter.
@@J_EOMReacts for your reading pleasure, there is an article in Collider by Michael Mosley about the genesis of Heat from Mann’s initial screenplay that was supposed to be a series with Hanna as the main character.

One of those hours had to be for the gunfight after the bank robbery.. I recall being really excited to see this because Pacino & DeNiro were both in Godfather II, but they never appeared together in the film. It was thrilling to see them act together. I believe they'vve done another film since this one was made but that cafe scene with them both was wonderful!
This movie has two villains from Hannibal Lector movies: Ted Levine (who played Buffalo Bill in “Silence of the Lambs”) and Tom Noonan (who played The Tooth Fairy in “Manhunter”). “Manhunter” (directed by Mann) is way better than “Red Dragon,” in my opinion…

Then the first time I watch you, you were talking about growing up on cartoons & romcoms & wanted no part of scary shit like your mama watched & there you are crying at Private Ryan and putting out the funniest cracks on YT & here we are; I watch a shit ton of reaction videos & you've got me subscribed -- best reactions ever! 💯💥👍👏👌
Welcome to the family!
The Shootout scene at the Bank was choreographed by two veterans of the British Special Forces, The SAS our equivalent to your Delta Force
They did an amazing job
Your face when Tone Loc showed up🤣
🤣🤣🤣 i haven’t seen Tone Loc since the Blank Check movie
Strange Days. You’ll enjoy that. Look it up.
I had to double check to make sure I saw Bud Cort in this movie. Bud Cort was Harold in Harold and Maude. I would love to see J react to that movie. I have watched that movie ten or twelve times. My older brother introduced me to that movie many years ago.
I forgot to mention Bud Cort was the restaurant manager or owner.
I’m have to check it out
You might get a kick out of this since you watched Silence of the Lambs, the guy you recognized from The Fast and the Furious (Ted Levine) is also the same dude who played Buffalo Bill. It seems like after Silence, he just said "only cop roles from now on."
If you're looking for another cold-blooded De Niro flick, Ronin is underrated but very good.
Lol I never knew he was buffalo bill. I have to back and look at him now. I will add it to the list
" They got Tone Loc in this bitch?!" Lmao
🤣🤣🤣 I forgot he was a person
You would be referring to the infamous "BIG MO PENCIL W/ BIG MO ERASER" . We all had them.
I hated them lol
@@J_EOMReacts They were insidiously huge for little kids hands!
I love your channel because you watch movies just like I do. Drives my wife crazy. 😂
Lol my ex gf use to hate it
Lol your dogs are the best
Thank you 🙏🏾
34:41 The sound of dead silence after the last shot is fired is more deafening than the sound of all those rounds being fired.
@25:00 -ish, that guy is Hank Azaria, most well-known for multiple voices on The Simpsons
I’m have to look up the characters he do
31:08 I watch Heat in its entirety every month or so on long haul flights, but I have your version of it downloaded onto my iPad for short haul flights, and this part makes me laugh every time. "THIS m'fker, man" 😂🤣
Lmao, your dog trying to get comfortable at 14:50 was more entertaining than the movie 😄
Coffee dates are usually a first date .😊
If you’re interested, Michael Mann’s first theatrical movie is kind of a smaller version of this from just the criminal perspective. It’s called Thief starring James Caan (Sonny Corleone). It’s not as “slick” as Heat, but if you like watching the evolution of filmmakers and like this movie it’s a much watch.
Thief is an excellent movie.
James Caan said it was his favorite movie. Cameo by Willie Nelson.
I’m have to add it to the list
Such a great movie with amazing acting. Glad you enjoyed it man. You are 100% correct. That scene at the Diner is Fkn amazing. One of the greatest acting scenes ever!
I’ve watched that one scene at least 10 times since I watched this.
I've always thought of that scene as part of a Master Class in screen acting! A salute to the Craft.
34:00 the first time I played GTA 5 and did some of that crazy bank robber stuff my first thought was "damn... this is f'ing Heat".
🤣🤣🤣 this made me redownload GTA 5
@@J_EOMReacts haha I'm itching to play it again just for the Trevor shenanigans.
"Young Dinero"... lol! He was 51 years old when he made this.
The first time I seen De Niro in anything was Meet the Parents and he looked like somebody’s granddad. Lol so yeah this is young De Niro to me
You can notice in a few scenes here, Val Kilmer has a weird growth on his elbow. It's a cyst from an injury he received while playing Jim Morrison in The Doors.
I’m have to go back and look now
People definitely went on dates for coffee at the time of this film. The introduction of coffee places like Starbucks made it trendy.
The next movie you should watch is: Things to do in Denver when you are dead
@17:20 "I'm telling you that's how Deniro talks to his kids!" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I'm dying.... But you're probably right though.
Love this movie. Comes down to two totally driven men who can't help but give 200% to what they do, to the detriment of all other aspects of their lives. They are the same personality. Excellent at what they do but destructive to the rest of their lives and relationships.
🤣🤣🤣 I’m telling you I believe that with all my heart.
You’re exactly right in that
A few years ago Pacino said his character was a cokehead which explains how he was acting
Makes sense lol
The gun play in this movie is awesome. Great movie. Loves to Drogo and Romulus. And to anyone offended by Rom airing out his balls, to dam bad.
Lol facts
Don’t ever watch Machete… you will regret it, and you will never get that time back, trust.
Have you seen or plan to see "Catch me if you can"? Tom Hanks, Leo Dicaprio, Christopher Walken among others. Another great Cat and Mouse game.
Def on the list.
@@EOMReacts Yes! Thank you! 👍
"I say what I mean, and I do what I say."
Fun Fact: The coffee shop scene sold Robert De Niro on the idea of making the film.
These facts are brought to you by 🐊
The restaurant they shot it at closed not long ago before I had a chance to go. Still not over it. LoL
👏👏👏
EOM ...That is unfortunate. However these things happen and we are often powerless to stop it.
Things worked out where they didn't need Weingrow but things don't always go as planed so you need to be prepared for those eventualities. It shows how thorough Neil is. Even if it's an unlikely scenario he's prepared for it.
I couldn’t have a random with me. I need to personally know your caliber of work lol
I still have to watch that
@@J_EOMReacts for your reading pleasure, there is an article in Collider by Michael Mosley about the genesis of Heat from Mann’s initial screenplay that was supposed to be a series with Hanna as the main character.
Henry Rollins is the actor who played the "bodyguard" Hugh Benny and snitched on the team after Waingro beat up Trejo. Henry grew up in the rough and tumble world of Washington DC Punk as the lead singer of Black Flag. ua-cam.com/video/VelEv1zl8vs/v-deo.html
Check Collateral 2004 by the same director, with Tom Cruise.
Will do
Yes, people go out on dates for coffee. I did that this morning actually. Nice morning dates are great!
When you're ready for more DeNiro please check out "Midnight Run", it's hilarious and surprisingly poignant at times.
It’s on the list
This movie has two villains from Hannibal Lector movies: Ted Levine (who played Buffalo Bill in “Silence of the Lambs”) and Tom Noonan (who played The Tooth Fairy in “Manhunter”). “Manhunter” (directed by Mann) is way better than “Red Dragon,” in my opinion…
I heard Manhunter is amazing
Manhunter is amazing! Just as good as Silence of the Lambs, maybe better.
Dope reaction video 😎🤘
Thank you
caught guys voice from fast and furious but not as Buffalo bill from silence of the lambs
🤣🤣🤣 was mind blown when ppl told me that was the same guy.
