23:54 The 'Great Ass' line and delivery was improvised by Pacino - and Hank Azaria's reaction was 100% genuine shock. How he didn't laugh I don't know but it's become a classic as a result of him not ruining the take.
Michael Mann filmed the bank heist shootout in a section of Los Angeles with tall buildings so that the sound of the blank cartridges would bounce off the buildings creating a unique sound.
Fantastic movie. Director Michael Mann rode around with an LAPD cop every Friday and Saturday for 6 months , even responding to radio calls to get the feel of the what it was like on the streets. He also asked Dennis Farina for advice, as he was an ex Chicago detective.
One of my favorite action movies from my childhood! The shootout is one of most realistic shootout in film history. It took them 2 weeks to film the sequence as it would start to rain in some parts of the movie.
Another trivia item, the idea was Pacino was playing a cop with a coke habit, hence some of his maniac behavior, but they ended up not having him use on screen. Al just keep that as part of character
I remember watching Heat in the theater in '95 and thinking how eye-rollingly improbable and over-the-top the urban warfare being depicted was. Then the North Hollywood Shoot-out happened a couple of years later and I had to rethink my opinion. Scarily similar.
They were influenced off this movie and also this is only movie in history to use actual sounds coming from the rifles during the shootout. That’s why it sounds real with the echos, Michael Mann opted to not re-record the sounds using cleaner captures from in shooting ranges and such.
I remember seeing this in the cinema when it was released - the hype for Pacino and DeNiro onscreen together was big, but their scene together completely surpassed all my expectations, filmic perfection
In the big shoot out scene. Val Kilmer empties his magazine and swaps for another. That movie clip is unedited and is considered by many tactical trainers, as being one of the best examples, of how to do it the correct way during a shoot out, that has ever been caught on film.
Ex British Special Forces guys Mick Gould and Steve Mitchell AKA 'Andy McNabb' were technical advisors. Apparently DeNiro was a big fan of McNabbs novel 'Bravo Two Zero'.
Dennis Haysbert, the guy you recognized from '24' and that you thought was the State Farm commercial guy, is actually the Allstate commercial guy, with the line 'Are you in good hands?"
A car DOES offer some protection, and at the time, it was part of the police training manual. However, the training also assumed that criminals were NOT armed with assault rifles instead of the usual array of handguns and shotguns. This was a hard lesson learnt by the LAPD during the North Hollywood shootout in 1997.
A few years after this was filmed, the people who owned the house where Trejo’s death scene was filmed, got their carpet replaced, and the floor under the carpet was still stained with the fake blood from filming.
I was so excited to see your reaction to this movie! It is a favorite of mine. It's the whole package- stellar cast, excellent writing, attention to detail in the directing, and as you said Nick, the sound editing and music are incredible. The coffee shop scene is one of the most spectacular scenes ever put on film. DeNiro and Pacino were in their prime. Danny Trejo and Dennis Haysbert are two of the most underrated actors in the business in my opinion. I could go on and on. Great reaction as always!
This is in fact the first time they've been together in a movie, hence the build up of the meeting in the diner.... they both starred in godfather 2 but never filmed together as they existed in different time lines...
Fact - The shootout scene in this movie has been voted again and again the greatest shootout scene in movie history and it’s universally agreed upon lol.
So glad you guys react to Heat, one of the best films that’s ever made. I had the same jaw dropped reaction when Natalie Portman’s character was in the bathtub with her wrists slit. And this should be a big lesson to all parents out there to not largely ignore your son or daughter and give them your love and full attention. That’s pretty much the advice I’ll give out. Anyways great reaction from you guys as always.
This movie is a remake of TV movie Michael Mann wrote and directed called LA TAKEDOWN which was based on a real-life Chicago bank heist in which the real Neil McCauly was killed in the shootout and the pursuing cop was Dennis Furina's forner partner.
Great reactions! *FUN FACT* Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino were almost brothers in "The Godfather" (1972). DeNiro auditioned for the role of "Sonny Corleone" which went to James Caan.
It actually happened in Los Angeles a few years after the movie came out. It was known as the Heat shootout, the criminals had Kevlar suits on covered from head to toe. Police started carrying automatic weapons after this. My brother was a L.A.P.D. captain.
@@Jen-Mom Yep. The two robbers were said to be huge fans and watched the film repeatedly. They committed several other robberies before the 'North Hollywood Shootout' which was their last and in one they set their get away vehicle on fire just as they did the ambulance in the movie.
You can't miss with a Pacino and De Niro movie, except for Righteous Kill which was an absolute embarrassment of a movie and to this day I have no idea why so many big names agreed to be in that stinker of a movie
Speaking of Drive-in movies, we have a two in our area. Last weekend they had Twisters, this weekend is Bad Boys 4, and the weekend after is Deadpool and Wolverine. It rained the night I was supposed to go to Twisters, but hopefully them next 2 weekends are clear. And they have an excellent concessions area. I don't know if I missed you talking about this or not, but the detective with Ashley Judd at the end of the movie, also played Bubba in Forrest Gump.

I can not BEGIN to describe what the year was like leading up to this film coming out(!). People had been waiting years for these two titans/father-and-son Dons to be in the same frame together. It was one of those scenarios where, in their diner convo scene, the silence in the theatres was beyond describable. De Niro and Brando did also do a flick together, The Score (2001), with Angela Basset and Edward Norton. It's not one for the history books like this one, but it is still fun and definitely worth a viewing on your channel.
Really one of the best films ever. From the director on down, it had everything you want in a film. Last of the Mohicans and the Insider are also great Michael Mann films.
Two good movies you two would like is Midnight Run. A road comedy with DeNiro and a drama/thriller with Pacino is The Devil’s Advocate. It also stars Keanu Reeves and Charlize Theron.

Another great film you should react to now that you've seen Heat, "The Irishman" directed by Martin Scorsese re-uniting Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci and Harvey Keitel
They didn’t have mandatory DNA back then. Like…they took DNA from suspects of SA & stuff but we didn’t have laws yet for taking & keeping all prisoners DNA in a database.
