The Fastest E-Enduro Bike?? Canyon Strive:ON Review
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 тра 2024
- Canyon is a brand that is committed to racing across just about all disciplines, so as the popularity of E-Enduro racing increased until it became a well established discipline, it was only a matter of time before Canyon created an EDR-E race team. This happened to be a team led by Fabien Barel; one of the sport’s brightest minds and most experienced racers, who set about producing an eBike with assisted Enduro racing as the sole focus: enter the Canyon Strive:ON. As Canyon’s first Bosch-powered eBike, the Strive:ON is a bike with speed on the mind, but how did it perform outside of the race tape? Robert has been putting the Strive:ON to the test for the last five months across a huge variety of terrain, and it’s safe to say it’s one of the best out there, but it’s not perfect.

Strive:ON was on top of my list when I was deciding what e-mtb to buy, but when I learned about the battery issue and saw forum filled with people trying to fix it and Canyon's lack of acknowledging the problem, I completely disregarded it. Kinda shame, because it looks really nice
Hopefully a better fix than simply replacing the latch if/when it fails is near to completion.
Same here, but looks like the Wild is the one for me
Got the new redesigned latch from Bosch today, so I hope it will solve the issue! I assume the new bikes already comes with it. 👍
What forum? I was about to buy this bike until I saw this comment.
There’s no way a medium is the right size for him.
What an amazing review. Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Some of the same points as the RM Altitude Powerplay, how does that one sit in the race mix? Orbea looks good but no removable battery like the Canyon or RM.
Rocky would take the cake in a power-focused sprint. It would be a close call between the three on the way down the hill, but the slightly more lively nature of the Wild may just edge it for flat-out descending speed.
Seems like a great deal.
What would be the main difference in riding characteristic to the Torque:on?
We haven’t tested the Torque:ON sadly. Hopefully we will in the future and can compare
Could you tell us your inseam length, please? I'm 6,5 (197 cm) and tried the XL on the Canyon parking lot. Seating position felt good, but I had a lot of bike in front of me. I did not try the L because Canyon's specs say that the maximum seat height is 85 cm, which is a tad too low for my 97cm inseam length. The M maximum height is around 80cm according to Canyon, so I'm wondering how you could establish the right saddle height with 189cm and long legs.
I know it might not be strong enough (or packaged right) for ebike purposes, but the shapeshifter was one of the things I really enjoyed about the strive. Climbing efficiency aside, it's a really fun way to liven up trails/the bike when things get flatter and flow-y-er. Kinda a shame it's left out on the ebike, it's what the strive is known for (besides winning), and it's a bit like having two bikes on the trail at once.
We agree, shapeshifter is rad on the standard strive. This didn’t call for it though.
How do you find the handling vs the 2023 Orbea Wild? Wild is my current favourite for next bike but not sure if a mullet set up like this would be more fun all round. Or is the wild still playful enough with full 29? (6ft rider so not so worried about full 29 so long as its not a barge)
The Wild feels slightly more supportive and racey overall (and slightly easier to maneuver as a result) but in terms of fun factor it's a pretty even match. Stay tuned for our eMTB Shootout where we'll have both bikes going head to head, coming up in the next 6 weeks or so.
I rode at a demo day and made a big mistake trying the XL, first big off in a long time. I am 6,0 did have a go on a large later in the day but was not 100% and could not get dialed in. So wish I had tried the Medium after watching this 😮
That’s a shame to hear. It’s not certain the medium would have been the solution of course, but it could have been worth a shot!
Sam bikes: M at 6‘0
Alex Bike tester: L at 6‘0
Rob rides: L at 6‘3
The Loam Wolf: M at 6‘2
Good luck by ordering the right one guys😂
It's definitely tricky. Always worth hopping onto other bikes and comparing geometry numbers to ensure you get the fit that is right for you, if you can.
Robert at 6'2" but with his short torso would be more like a 5'10 rider of average proportions, for which we'd recommend the medium in this particular bike.
@@TheLoamWolf now I’m even more confused🤣!
I was told that I have to choose the bigger size because of my long arms and legs (6ft / 35 inseam)
@@TheLoamWolfwhy did he go for the L size shuttle LT then?, as that is very close with the L sized strive on!
Is this thing going to ever come to America? Can't find it on their website yet
Canyon says it will be, we just dont have an exact timeframe yet unfortunately.
This bike was high up on my list . but unfortunately its not available in the US.. I Eventually went with the Propain Ekano 2 AL . would yall be reviewing that bike soon ??
The canyon is coming to the US soon. We’ll have the Ekano 2 CF in our eMTB shootout in a few months, looking forward to it!
@@TheLoamWolf ok SWEEEEEEEEET...would love to hear you guys opinion on that bike.,
@@TheLoamWolf That's the official word from Canyon but they've been saying that since last summer. I've pretty much given up on it. If it's not here by July, I'm going to purchase something else. Either a Spectral:On or Torque:On, I haven't decided yet. I suppose it doesn't matter to Canyon though as they're getting my money either way 🤣
Can you Please test the MX or mullet over the 29r on the Ekano2cf@@TheLoamWolf
I cant work out why Canyon, gas gas, YT and a few others have an in-between size for those 175cm tall. Its the average height in the UK. Rather than the sales pitch of saying you have the choice between stability and agility, the reality is neither size will suit you or give you an optimal mountain bike experience.
Thanks for this. I'm 178 and looking at the numbers I was constantly feeling towards the S despite everyone's advice and Canyon also recommending a M.
Other manufacturers would also recommend smaller sizes than Canyon. Unsure on why Canyon has these recommendations, wonder if they just want to make everyone feel good with the extra stability?
Yeah you’re welcome! It’s interesting to see where brands direct people and the pressures from “those who know” aka forum commenters. We’re firm believers that there isn’t a one size formula for everyone. Someone at 178 could love a medium while another could hate it and never feel at home… go with the numbers that you’ll be happiest with for your riding style and terrain.
on size S, you'll hit your knees on the handlebars(this a pedal bike and you pedal it by sitting on the saddle) and the 450mm reach is for ppl less than 170 cm in height.
Also, in this case Loam Wolf is inconsistent; the size M Pivot Shuttle LT was too little for him(even though is was bigger than this Strive's size M) and he went for a Large but here, he decided against the Large and promote sizing down 2x; ffs, he is, shoes on, over 190 cm and he says the best fit for him was a bike with a top tube of 610mm and 470mm reach. I call this a big big BS.
when is he lying?, now, with the strive or back then with the shuttle LT?
@@eugenux surprisingly no one did when bikes where shorter, and top tube is 610. You're not pedaling right above the cranks. But, in 2 weeks I'll let you know ;)
Did you have motor rattling? Sounds pretty loud in the raw Clips!
Cheers
That was the battery. Motor was quiet!
orbea wild or this one jumping?
That seat post is a shocker!
Yes, I've been noticing it more and more recently in videos from various creators.
Why would you do that, it looks absolutely stupid.
Either all the way in or all the way out!
Ive got the Strive On Underdog in a size L im 6"0 and its perfect, great felling bike
Right on, glad to hear it!
Vorrei comprarla ma ho paura delle geometrie così abbondanti!Ti sei trovato bene con un reach così lungo?
finally some decency!
@@keomatrevisan167 la vedo dura che qualcuno ti risponda se scrivi in italiano, ad ogni modo basta che stai su una taglia in meno alla tua "solita"
Will it take the 900watt battery from the torque on
No, it's a Bosch system with max 750Wh capacity.
I would want any CF bike to be rated strong enough for downhill. Like the torque
Wondering why most reviews so far have described this bike as surprisingly lively, agile, playful, light-feeling, whatever you want to call it. Particularly compared against the Orbea Wild, which on other channels was described as more of a stable, speed, plow, etc. bike. Here the description seems to be the complete opposite, why could this be? I have read that the Strive:ON works much better with less SAG than recommended, but I wonder whether different suspension settings (should) lead to such different interpretations...
Interesting. We'll be putting the two bikes head-to-head on the same trails in our eBike shootout later this year, so that'll confirm whether these impressions are 100% the case, with the opinion of our whole crew of testers.
I (Robert) experimented with more and less sag, and found 28% to be a fairly sweet spot, but regardless of sag, compression and rebound, like-for-like it felt less nimble than the Wild, IMO. Both killer bikes though.
@@TheLoamWolf Thanks for the quick reply. Really interesting indeed, the guys from MBR stated their perfect SAG to be at 27%, so almost identical. And I don't suspect either you or them not trying to give us an honest and transparent impression... :)
I guess you rode the Wild in size L, right? Otherwise, I don't see how such different impressions can come about. It must be subjective perception, which is obviously also fine. Anyhow, really looking forward to eBike shootout!
Asking Canyon support If the battery problem is solved.......short answer "we dont know about that kind of problem"😅 Dont know what to think about. I cant decide between Strive and Rail at tho moment. Any advice???
I was stuck between the same bikes. Went for the strive and it’s unbelievably good. Had a trek slash before and the downhill performance and the agility of the strive are on a different level. It actually feels lighter on the downhills
EXACTLY Canyon have a bad client suport they dont give a damn to clients, they alreadu payed the bike they are trapped They are arrogants
I emailed them and told them I was worried about the catch failing when I was riding overseas. They sent me a replacement latch . Seems reasonable 🤷♂️
Sucks that they don't sell here in US :(
They will do shortly.
they do now :) @@TheLoamWolf
Went with a Bullit - sized down based on this review
6-2' riding a Medium? Thats not good. How do we know a bike will fit if sizing is wonky? Sounds like a headache.
With any bike we’d recommend at least trying something with similar numbers to see how it feels for you. This is no different and we know reach/stack/top tube lengths that work for us.
Just look at the numbers, there is a huge difference between brands and years, modern bikes are much bigger in general and for example a medium Strive:ON have a longer reach than a size XL YT Decoy.
Nine thousand pounds? Of money??
That's more than a couple of good used WRXs and a decent analog mtb here.
Canyon bikes are really great for what you get for the price and are all around good bikes
We agree! They do a great job of combining performance and value
So...this is a turbo levo with a cascade link and a 170mm fork?
lol wtf? Because they have the same suspension travel? 🤔😂 Different motor/battery combo, very different geometry… there are only so many things that can be different on a bicycle.
too bad US only offer ep8 version
They don't currently offer the Strive:ON at all - it's Bosch only. They should have them in the US soon though.
@@TheLoamWolf you are right, similar names. Strive:in, spectral:on. Virtually these are identical bikes with two different motor brands
at 173-174, or 5'8, I found it funny that a guy that's close to 190 cm would opt for the same size as myself; sure, this and the torque are a little on the longer side but, going for an M instead of an XL is uber sandbagging Canyon's sizing..with no reason at so ever; L size would have worked for you very well, considering these are ebikes...and that you are pedaling them up the hill. at 611 tt and you being 190+ with shoes in your feet, you'll constantly hit your handlebars when getting up corners; if you say anything else but that, I call it BS!
This or the wild?
We cover this near the end of the video. It’s not black and white!
You should be more critical about that battery issue. This is basically faulty product that shouldn’t be sold in the first place.
We replaced the latch and rode hard for 3 months after without any issues to see if it would happen again, and it didn’t. As much as it absolutely is not good, and we hope to see it improved, we think the bike is still worthy of being sold so long as the owner is aware.
It is a problem with a Bosch part, not exclusive to this Canyon. Furthermore, it happens on a minority of bikes. Mine already has 1000kms without touching the locking mechanism and no problems.
and also if it wasn't sold, I and many others wouldn't have been able to have the pleasure of so many miles already done in a spectacular way on the best bike I've had today, and I've had many ebikes before...
Cansomeone explain the battery problem please?
too bad no US model :( lame!
It’s coming!
what's the ETA, its definitely one of the bikes top of the list to get next, especially at the price point, battery, and option for race motor.
its available now :) @@thewrx2600

Surely E-Enduro is an oxymoron?
Yes and no. Enduro is a race format, so the “E” just signifies an enduro race with an eBike. But we hear what you’re saying!
Moron 😂😂😂😂😂
