  • For most people in the West, Iran is a country associated with terrorism, violence, and societal repression. Dutch filmmaker and photographer Reinier van Oorsouw travels there with the simple question: Is Iran really that bad? From snowboarding in the mountains to professional women working as creatives, we find a modern and nuanced society far different from what’s typically portrayed in the media.

    I am an American, a Spanish hybrid. I went to Iran with an American passport two years ago. I went alone. I am 23 years old and a girl. The truth was I was very scared but I wanted to see Iran. Let me say a few things about Iran: Everywhere I went, I told everyone I was American. I expected them to hate me but they loved me. No one took extra money from me. Even in most places, they did not charge me at all. When I asked them why, they said that we Iranians have a hospitable nature. Even with ourselves. Iran is safer than the United States. Nobody bothered me, nobody attacked me, nobody cheated, nobody frowned at me, nobody hated me. Iran is like a miracle for human beings. This is a fact. Thank you Iran Thank you Iranian people I love you

A citizen who has no right inside country and who faces disrespect from outside because he is unknown or presented in a wrong way. If we are hostage by the regime inside, why don't other countries let us in to their home? The answer has already given, we are the Iranian citizen.

      @@mhmdmar Personally, I make this claim by looking back to the story of my life and others in Iran and by listening to what has been taken place on news. I am an example of somebody who has always wanted to work abroad and longed to be looked like other job candidates from other countries, but my problem is that I am, like the majority of Iranian, poor. I had tried several years to find a post doctoral position given that I got a PhD degree, but I had been facing rejection. I had been sending email to many professors about why they were reluctant to have an Iranian for their job application. Given that I was unsuccessful, I had to content to apply for another PhD, I got TOEFL 94, uploaded my documents, and wait for a single positive response, but nothing came up. Meanwhile as I was unemployed in Iran after PhD, I had to work freelance by writing fake scientific papers for the sons of the rich authorities in Iran so that they can make a resume for themselves by these papers and apply for a PhD position. They made it and found their way on the international universities dotted around the world, but I myself left behind still looking for a positive email saying that at last you are accepted for this position. I saw on news that the President Trump imposed tough economic sanction on us and soon after I faced a notorious economic crisis. The inflation rate increased dramatically, an my income reduced 4-fold. Before sanction, my wife and I was living on a monthly income of 1600 dollars, and now we try to make ends meed desperately on a monthly income of 400 $. Nevertheless, I still saw that the so called sanctioned authorities families were immigrating to US, Canada, England, etc. These privileged sons and daughters of Iran top-ranked authorities even could get US citizenship. I and many Iranian citizens took part in a massive campaign against the fact that these relatives of the terrorist authorities must be discharged from these countries, we asked the US government to kick them out of the US territory, but nothing happened. I saw that they even invest enormous amount of our country's money on advertising the extremist version of Islam, the one we have suffered too much, inside the US, Canada, England. Every large embezzlement are found out in these countries with Iran's authorities living happily there. The monetary value of the combined embezzlement is way larger than our country's budget. Inside the country, people protest peacefully against their harsh appalling living conditions, but they face mass shooting and massacre. The same minorities who are participating in killing people escape from Iran to these countries, a massive campaign are held against human right violation on the perimeters of the hotel they resident, but the government of these countries do not take any action. All they do more sanctions, more pressure on the people of Iran, not Iran government. We, the people of Iran, are not diet, we observe these things, we observe how we and our life are neglected, we observe how disrespect we face when we the ordinary people face visa cancellation and turned back to the wasteland, the eternal hell of Iran. A countries which was beautiful as paradise once, but now it has turned into a intolerable hell.

      1- If you execute every opposition, suppress any criticism and persuade people to sell out each other and their moral principles, you are likely to see them just "not killing each other" in street which is apparently your reading of the "safe".

      Tyler McQuien yeah we want them out, the majority of the country at least. Iran is a country of 80 million ppl, a large portion of us under 40, educated, and secular middle class. Even the traditional, religious, older ppl who practice islam don’t support the regime because it doesn’t represent us at all and the regime keeps repressing the whole country. May be a small group of nearly 2-3 million ppl (out of 80 million!) support the regime and this minority group rules now. Many of our young educated ppl are choosing to immigrate now, due to the circumstances in our beautiful country... it’s sad.

      You start to be a dangerous person, when instead of believing in God as the symbol of Love, Peace and Kindness on earth, you suddenly turn into crusade and argue: "My God is better than your God". "You won't go to heaven, unless you die as a member of my religion" and "Convert to me or die in hell"...

    I live in Iran and I take Warfarin(a blood medicine) everyday and even not taking it one day can cause me to have a brain stroke because of blood clogs that get formed and go into my brain, after sanctions it became really difficult for a time period to find it in the drug stores, of course the government circumvented this limitation(drug sanctions) after about two or three weeks by some unknown(to me) ways and now I have two boxes but I was stressed because for about a month after US sanctions the situation still persisted. I wanted to make a video and upload it on UA-cam and ask everyone to THINK about what the US is doing. I'm completely satisfied with my government and I am completely free and I have a good life, I travel a lot and I study engineering in university and I think if there is a problem in my country we should solve it by trying hard and we can't only blame the government. But whether the blame is on the government or on us (or on both) I don't know what it has to do with the US. All they are saying about Iran being a source of terrorism is lie. I have seen several families whose sons or whose husbands fought in Syria and Iraq to destroy ISIS (and thanks god they did) and they got martyred and Iran never disrespected the sovereignty of those countries so how can this be terrorism? I think there is also corruption in my government but it's not as much as the US government is trying to bold it. I can swear that corruption in the US itself is more than it's in Iran. Please let ourselves decide about our lives and our future. We don't need your satanic help. No I don't love the USA. I hate it. I respect the American people though. just as I do about the people of any other countries around the world.

    As a Westener, I've visited the Middle-East several times. For the life of me, I don't understand why the new generation in these countries want to be so Westernized. Truly, there isn't anything fascinating about our modern decadent Western culture. Family values have broken down, kids don't respect their elders, men-women relation have become poisoned by casual sex and feminism, surreal individualism etc ...
    The only Western culture I can respect was the traditional 50's.
    And as for the tattoo artist (and the likes): Even here in the West you won't be taken seriously if you dress like that. It's true that people are more open-minded here. But don't expect getting an office job if you dress like a hobo.
    I met many people in the ME who exagerrately think everything in the West is free and unrestricted.
    Iran has a rich culture and is truely a gem. Please dear Iranians conserve what's left of your traditions, otherwise in 50 years you'll become the same garbage traditional Western societies have become.

      Arcoserv LLC well said , I try to say the same thing to my liberal friend but I don’t know how to use the rich vocabulary in English as u do , I’m also an Iranian living In Canada and it’s really a shame that (most) Canadians that I see , are losing their beliefs in religious stuff and their tradition, unfortunately, i have a friend who just thinks that “apparently losing the tradition or forgetting it “ is not a bad thing and it just disgusts me that , I’m the future, we’re gonna have people thinking like this and deciding for their future ,
      And unfortunately, as it was the same thing in Iran , I was the only trump supporting conservative as I am in Canada , I really wish that in my future career, ( college, university, etc ...) , there would be more people who think like me ,
      At least for once ,😂

      Arcoserv LLC I agree with your comment 100%. I should mention who is at fault for our decadent culture. Feminism, abortions, open borders, porn, sleaze, death of free speech? You understand who. I am with you on the 50's though. Those were the best of times, were people did respect their elders, please and thank you are a thing of the past. Ever notice the Awards shows of today. The less you are wearing the better dressed you are. I was not born in the 50's but I lived in England in a quaint village where the above was the norm, thank you, please, etc., I am sick of the way this earth is changing. Not for the better but for the worse! I agree 100% with you in regards to the Iranian people. My next door neighbor was a couple with a small child. She came knocking on my door around 1:00 she was so distraught, she kept saying I am having a heart attack. I grabbed her pulse, ran back to my place and told her to blow into this paper bag. That calmed her down somewhat. Her husband came home from work. He was annoyed that she had bothered me, bcs I worked as well. I told him to tell the drs that she is having a panic attack. A couple of hrs later they came home and I inquired about her. They both said "how did you know about panic attacks, you were right." I told them I used to get them myself and that they are frightening. After that they could not do enough for me. I didn't want anything from them it was all part of my job. The most caring, loveable people you would ever want to meet. I agree their rich in culture as well. Thank you for all those kind words. Everyone seems to lump ME's as all having the same mind set.

      I really think that people have an idealized perspective of the 50s due to its portrayal in the media. Many of the problems we have today we had then, the only difference was that everything (except blantant racism) was done in the dark. Alcoholism was rapant, many women had no way to escape unhappy marriages, and many people was narrowed minded due to lack of travel and education. It was just unacceptable to not keep up appearances back then.

    • @AArco-vc1jj
      @AArco-vc1jj 5 років тому +3

      @@kjames002 True. However at large the 50's still offered a functionning society and strict values which kept many of today's problems at bay.
      People married young and that meant even if they were not educated, that meant they took up responsabilities at a young age.
      Also add that people were a lot cherrier and optimistic than today. I doubt the 50's had such a rampant suicide rate amongst 18-25 year olds. We currently have an drug/opioid crisis in North America which is litterally decimating our youth, regardless of their racial and social background.
      Although the difficulty the old times wasn't a walk in the park, it certainly was more stable than what we have today. We must also recognize our shortcomings.

    • @yonatanran659
      @yonatanran659 5 років тому +7

      Yeah the 50s were great for white people in America, Germany and Japan were just bombed out of existence so no industrial competition... women and black people knew there place in society. The hippies are not demanding weird stuff like "human rights" and it's completely ok to say you are pro free speech while sending communists to jail. Yeah that's the America we all love.
