  • In the fifth and final episode of Is It Really That Bad?, filmmaker Reinier van Oorsouw travels through the beautiful Alborz mountain range. Here he snowboards at Dizin Ski Resort, and explores the Alamut Valley. As happens throughout his trip, he’s warmly invited by local people to dance, to eat, and to learn more about their lives. See for yourself the Iran never shown by the media.

Custom Logo Cookies Thank you, but you have to know Iran is not a just Persian country, it’s diverse and ppl lives with the different languages! There is almost 40 million Turks, 10 million Kurdish ppl, 5 million Arabic ppl, Bloch ppl ... Persian are minority, but unfortunately they are in power! That’s why the other population that I named even have no right to learn their own language..

why do you separate people? Iran belongs to all of us Turk,Kurdish,Bloch,Arabs and all of us
who said iran belongs to just persian language people?!?!?!?!!

Milad Vaziri I don’t care Iran belongs to whom! I’m Turkish race and have nothing in common with Persian! I don’t want to sacrifice my language and my culture to be united with Persian! We’ll be separate one day, I’m from Ardabil and it’s our dream to fall apart from Persian and join to our brothers. I respect Persian, but it’s my right to defend my heritage, culture, language, and future!

I was born in Iran and have not been there in years. These episodes are amazing. It was like going back home for me. When I went there about 15 years ago (as a visitor this time) I also noticed how nice everyone was. So yes living there can be hard especially if you don't have money. But then living in any country has its own issues. If you have a chance to visit don't pass it up. Nobody bites! Great job Reinier!

I loved your videos, Rainier. I am Portuguese/Iranian (married to an Iranian) and have lived in Iran since 1988. Of course, working in my country’s embassy has helped me immensely in remaining here. I do think that the media hasn’t been very true in depicting Iran.
In this video, I was sorry that you did not show Dizin properly and how the Iranian women ski and how they manage to be creative with their ski clothes.
Please make a series on the women in Iran and how they manage to take part in all kinds of sports, even though we have to be covered with the hijab... even bungee jumping. I lost the courage at the last moment and didn’t jump, by the way 😊.

After each episode, I scroll down to read the comments and all I see is fellow Iranians nagging and complaining about 'how real Iran is' and 'how this video isn't showing real Iran'. Interestingly enough, each person describes 'the real Iran' differently. Can't you see? We are a colorful, paradoxical nation. We have religious people and non-religious ones, some of us drink, some of us don't, some of us hate hijab, some of us believe in it etc. We'll get nowhere and suffer forever (as we do now), if we don't learn to accept each other for what we are. And stop reminding the guy to pronounce 'Iran' correctly! As if you have the best pronunciation for every fucking word yourself.

In Western Media, Pakistan is also portrayed in a negative way although PAK has more positivity than negativity. For Instance, Pakistan has 5 out of 14 8000m mountain peaks. They come with splendid most beautiful valleys having breath-taking views of most magnificent mountains in the World. Going south, you have Islamabad which is the second most beautiful capital in the World. Further down south, there is Lahore the city with 1000 years of heritage and amazing food. Moving further down there is Mohen-jo-Daro the ruins of 5000 years old city. A city that invented the drainage system. We have the World's only fertile Desert THAR, beautiful beaches in Balochistan, amazingly awesome street food in Karachi and above all people that would show hospitality to the level that is absent in other cultures.

I mean (Ardebil, Tabriz, Urumie and Zanjan especially, with different language (Turkish), there are still nomads with their own culture and way of life, ....

It's really nice that you tried to see and explore for yourself, rather than just believing what is told by media.
But to be honest, as an Iranian woman who has studied abroad and travelled and loves her country, I should say you haven't seen much!
Is Iran that bad? The series shows no. But to see its beauty, you need to work more.
You should have had an Iranian guide to give you the context for things. Like the flower in Isfahan, it was just a welcome gift.
You just approached the some of the ones that could speake English and they were not happy with anything in Iran. They should be respected ofcourse, but what about others?
Any way, thank you for the work and I hope one day, you get a more balanced realistic picture of Iran (which is pronounced /eeraan/, not / I ran/)!

He just spent couple of days in each city, would you expect him to interview the entire population of Iran? His job is fantastic expressing what he absorbed from those he met.

@@mz3361 That definitely would have not been possible and obviously not what I meant. But even if you just simply search visiting Iran in UA-cam, you'll see videos of other travelers who have been in exactly same position, but did it differently. The question is: could the resources available been used better? If you ask me, I say yes.

Really interesting and the photography is great. It does leave me wondering, though: is Iran only "not so bad" the more it resembles *western* countries?

Really great series. Will you discuss the treatment of Baha'i's (a religious minority)? I had friends who escaped Iran and religious persecution. Devout Muslims risked their own lives to help them escape over the mountains. Not everyone agrees with this treatment against the Baha'i's.... but it is a part of their history and current landscape.

This is the smartest dutchie! He’s right why did he said it like airan even Dutch people say IEEEEEERAN SIGH and it does Matter how you pronounce a name you can’t say niederlend instead of Nederland or aindia instead of India sigh!!! The western world shows us propaganda unless all y’all stop watching tv and travel things will get worse! The west is turning into a jailhouse you are being followed from within your house and from the moment you go outside! A Dutch man who’s a lawyer btw said he never felt so free when he went to Iran! When he went back to Holland he sold all his apple devices and purchased Asian one lol! So this one time he filed for his tax km he was making for work! he got a letter back from the irs ( Belastingdienst) and they said we digged up your license plate number and 5 out of 30 days you wasn’t driving there on that particular highway so we’re definitely not giving you your tax 💰 he was so pissed off because he used his sisters car for a week because his car was at the dealership! Anyways the west is turning into jail we have no freedom over here

Thank you MATADOR NETWORK for this amazing episode . Iran sure is one the most peaceful places in middle East (the center of universe). There's no tourism industry as people consider us as terrorists , some don't even know where is the land on the map ; in fact a guy asked me if Iran is in Africa.. 😂
You won't find bars and clubs in Iran, but ull get amazing home made wine , raisin vodka (we call it araq sagi= meaning , dogs drink) and tasty veg as well as non vegetarian food. Iranians love foreigners , hospitality is what'll steal your heart .If any of you fellas ever decide to visit Iran, please do hire a tour guide cuz iran is a historical country you'll find place with over 3 -7 thousand yrs history so it'll be more interesting for you guys to get an idea about the history too.
And the last suggestion to yall , plz try going to the forest camps in north , do visit pomegranate gardens in (saveh) and dont forget to visit tomb of the world's ,great poets : haafez and saadi , you're gonna love the vibes there.

Well, I am Ryne ear and this is what I take from my visit from Iran. If you go open minded anywhere you will see the place as it is. But if you go with an attitude you only see what your perception allows you which will be limited to what is important to you.
As it is said in Persian:
از کوزه همان تراود که در اوست!
Your homework to find the meaning!
