    I just stumbled upon this video searching for videos from the SWCP. I myself am walking this path in yearly sections with a friend. We travel from Norway and do this as a yearly part of our summer vacations. I am impressed that you are taking on this long trail alone, and that you are so positive even if you got so sick. I agree that this path is amazing. We wanted to do the Cornwall bit first, and have so far walked from Westward Ho! to Falmouth. Starting in Falmouth again this summer. But we are not camping. We are in our late 60's and treat ourselves to B&Bs and luggage transfer and carry only a daypack each with valuables, water, food, cameras, powerbanks, map and extra clothes (heavy enough for us😂). It has been marvellous so far. I guess you are home now and perhaps you have started on a new adventure. I have subscribed and will watch all your videos from the SWCP and more. All the best 😊

    My friend stopped to chat to you when she recognised you from your utube vids, 5 of us ladies were hiking towards Porlock . Lisa posted below.( 2 of us have walked the whole path, I've walked 1/3) you have lots more amazing scenery to come...was great to meet you. Good luck on the rest and hope you're feeling better ...we're all following you here

      Awww hi Kaz, lovely to hear from you and to meet you briefly on the trail. The weather was wild that day! Beautiful scenery though, absolutely stunning. Thanks for the encouragement! X

    A very nice video. Your observations on people not recognizing the beauty of local trails is spot on. Reminds me of a song from the 1960s "don't it always seem to go, we don't know what we've got 'til it's gone". You really should see if your tourism department of the government can give you a grant for these hikes. BTW the AT has been uncomfortably crowded this year.
    I am very excited that you got a poncho. I've been using ponchos since 1963. They are very versatile. Carry some cord to be able to set the poncho up as an overhead tarp when you take a break or to protect you while setting up your tent in a down pour. When you get cold, if you carry a candle, you can set up a hot poncho to warm up. I'm so sorry that you are sick. Get well quickly. Good Luck, Rick

    Sorry to hear about the dodgy chicken. Glad you're feeling better. I did wonder if it was bad water, run off from agricultural fields. "No where to get coffee before 9 or 10am" - welcome to the rural West Country. It's a slower pace of life. :) I totally agree that multi-day hiking is much more a niche activity here due to our lack of bye-laws allowing wild camping. I've done sections of the SWCP but am hoping to do a longer thru-hike here in the next year or two. ATB, John.

      Yes I was worried about the potential parasite risk from water as I've had giardiasis before and it ain't fun! Luckily (if you can call it that) it was just the chicken.
      It's such a shame about our by-laws, Scotland are much more forward-thinking. They're looking to criminalise trespass too! But that's a whole different debate.

    • @Jarbie
      @Jarbie 3 роки тому +1

      @@appalachiangirluk9960 Giardiasis, that's not nice. I am so lucky I live near Dartmoor so have a lot more freedom to wild camp in certain areas but wish England and Wales were more like Scotland in that regard. Hoping to get up to do the WHW next month. Hope all goes well for your SWCP. I shall try and keep up with your progress. John.

    Brilliant to be starting this epic adventure👍 The coast and the sea looked amazing as you were doing all those up and downs and dealing with the ever changing weather conditions😊 Loved the sight of the rain out to sea and the brightness, usefulness and value of the poncho😊 Agree that there is always a trade off with comfort for really light packs. Your last night sounded horrible and well done in getting through it all and hopefully being able to continue👍

    Hi Laura. I'm the lady with the pink and purple hair that stopped you on the path, with my friend kaz, exclaiming "I know you?!" And then realised I knew you from watching your west highland way trek! I felt like I'd met a celebrity 😁. I hope your sickness was the chicken and not something else. Will continue to follow your journey on the SWCP..... enjoy and get well soon 😊.

    Great video. I'm doing the coast of Britain (slowly: I've done Scarborough to Barnstaple so far). SWCP might be better than the Appalachian Trail as I've heard that the Appalachian Trail is a green tunnel for 2000 miles. SWCP has lots of variety and open views and lots of historical places en route. I met someone who did the Pacific Crest Trail and he said it was excellent (took him 6 months or so).

    Is some of this video mirrored, or the wrong way round? The high banks are on the wrong side if you're walking westward out of Lynton.. Sorry to concentrate on such a trivial point, but since I noticed it, I can't watch the video without thinking it.

      It was the chicken in the end thankfully! It absolutely took it out of me though, I was very ill. Though silver lining it was nothing water-related as parasites take much longer to recover from!

    I think what you said about long distance in the UK is right, I've been planning a few (for next year now, as injury put paid to doing anything this year), and the hardest part is the cost of camping. I will probably chance it with wild camping, and hope for the best, especially for longer through hikes.

    Worth making jerky. Easy to make, even if you don’t have a dehydrator. You know what’s in it and can make it just how you like it. It’s lightweight, lasts for weeks and if you buy grass fed beef it’s soooo nutritious. Let’s hope it was the 🍗 (cross-fingers)

    • @appalachiangirluk9960
      @appalachiangirluk9960  3 роки тому

      Does it need to be super hot to make it though?? X

    • @hArtyTruffle
      @hArtyTruffle 3 роки тому

      @@appalachiangirluk9960 No, the exact opposite. Very low heat (‘so it feels warm but not hot… prob the lowest heat you have) for X many hours, depending on the thickness of the strips, if you only have an oven. I have a cheapo dehydrator and after marinading the strips overnight and laying them out on the trays, it takes about 8-12 hours. You’re literally drying it out. If you like it chewy, you cut the beef in thin strips along the grain, but if you like it not so chewy (but it’s still quite chewy), you cut the beef in thin strips across the grain. There are loads of videos about it on UA-cam. Just have a little look next time you’re home, check a few vids out and choose how you want to try your first batch. Lots of peeps do it different ways. Find what you like through experimenting. Hope you’re feeling better. I’ll keep eyes peeled for your next vid. Happy travelling 🌻

    Oh no, between your period & throwing up , it's not a good start. Still, you've done so well & sold it to me. I'd love to give a good old chunk of this a go. I think it's an absolute bummer that wild camping isn't legal in England. We hike & camp as a family of 4, it costs an absolute fortune in campsite fees even just for that absolutebasic sites & its off putting. I look forward to your next installment x

    • @appalachiangirluk9960
      @appalachiangirluk9960  3 роки тому +1

      I've had a nightmare! I agree with you, I think UK hiking laws are totally off-putting, and so are the costs that are involved if you don't want to wild camp. The other day I saw a charge of £24 for a square of grass on which to place your tent for the evening... no electric hookup, no kitchenette facilities. They're taking the piss quite frankly. We are not backpacker friendly at all and because of that our trails are not being used to their fullest. I'm finding this trail quite lonely to tell you the truth, I think having hiked in the US with a big bubble of people and the comradery that comes with it it's a shock to hike in the UK. If I come off, It'll either be money or loneliness that takes me off I reckon!

    • @niks_healthy_lifestyle1691
      @niks_healthy_lifestyle1691 3 роки тому

      @@appalachiangirluk9960 I can imagine it would be lonely. We finally did the WHW, I thought some isolated parts could be tough for a solo hiker. We did it over 9 days & wild camped 2 nights. The campsites cost between £36 & £40 per night for 4 on the WHW, fair enough we were happy to use the toilets & showers but it's by no means affordable to backpackers & soon added up. Next time we would wild camp more now we know we managed fine.
      Hope you're feeling much better & not paranoid after what happened on the AT with you been unwell too. Keep going lovely x

      @@appalachiangirluk9960 I think it depends which trail you hike in the UK as well. Pennine Way, Coast to Coast and WHW are all quite friendly. These trails all get quite busy. Cape Wrath Trail is probably best if you like solitude. I've done from Poole to Barnstaple on the SWCP and the longest I've managed to walk without (literally) meeting or even seeing anyone was in mid-January this year walking from Port Isaac to Trebarwith Beach (4 hours! I set off at 7AM). The UK is a crowded country but I think you can still avoid people in Scotland and parts of Wales! Northumberland is also good for that.

  • @Whatsisface4
    @Whatsisface4 3 роки тому +2

    Interesting thoughts on how the SWCP can match up to seemingly more exotic locations. All I can say is the stretch from Lynton to Highveer point is just fantastic. It's not all like that, but enough is to make it all more than worthwhile.

    I think perhaps the through-hikes in the UK are plagued by child-abducting Sasquatch 😏 Kinda off-putting, given that I’m short and could be mistaken for a child (from behind… at a distance)… 😂
    Beautiful scenic land… the colours!!! ♥️
    I remember when I was hiking around the Lake District, rain on, rain off… love it like that. I’m a natural radiator so cooling rain is much appreciated.

      Huh? That I made a very common 'part-timers' joke that's used to playfully tease people? I've certainly had people say it to me many times in many different work places.
      Periods are normal and happen to almost every woman in the world every month. There is nothing distasteful or dirty about them. Many women watch this channel, who also will have periods while hiking. Its a common question/topic I see in women's hiking groups... you bet I'm going to be honest about the things that affect me while I'm hiking, whether that's a blister or a toenail infection, pooping in the woods or periods. Thank your lucky stars that's one less issue you have to consider when you hike!
