- On the1st of July 2020 I set out from Minehead to complete a long distance walk following the longest continuous footpath in the UK.
The journey took nearly two months and ended 630 miles later in Poole Dorset.
It was another excellent adventure.
You had me with the SWCP, you had me even more with Skye and you had me completely with Enya :-)
Really enjoyed the video SWCP very well put together. Interesting all the way through, great 👍
Another great video, Jon. You have a real talent for the editing ( and the walking, of course )I think we're inclined to forget, sometimes, what fantastic scenery we have in this country, and how cheaply we can have a real adventure.
I think you, probably, walked a good deal farther than 630 miles, if you count all the times you has to go back for your camera.
Amazing, thoroughly enjoyed watching this, thank you. I'm inspired!
yet another great video & great adventure... should have many more followers !! ... share with anyone you know
A delight, thanks for posting.
great vlog - thanks for sharing your journey and showing the beauty of the area. hope sky was fine
Very enjoyable video, great mix of walking and non-walking footage, love the montage of people met at the end. I'm doing it over many trips, last week saw me cross the half way distance. Hats off to through walkers like you!
Hi Jon. Glad to finally see a video of yours. I doubt you'll remember me but we crossed paths outside Plymouth near Staddon Point Battery. I remember you well and the story of your extraordinary hike across Jordan was it? Meeting you really struck a cord and made me feel a lot better about my life plans to just walk as many hiking trails as possible. I could see first hand how happy it made you. What a lovely video. Hope to cross paths again soon.
hi george
if you are ever passing exeter send me an email it would be good to meet up and here about your future hiking plans?
all the best jon
A very enjoyable video, can’t wait until the next adventure, subscribed
Hi Mate.
Great to see your trip I came over from NYC to hike half of the path in 2019 my time was limited good to see whats ahead of me for the next trip. Great memories brought back to me from your footage. cheers
Hey you are an energetic and a great human being. Enjoying with the nature is the best thing a person can do which you do. This journey for nearly 60 days seems great but sure wanst easy for you. Thank you for sharing this great experice with us. Love your enthusiasm.
Great trek, I walked it back in the mid eighties with a couple of school mates, young and dumb as we were we did it in 28 days. I've come to appreciate a slower pace as the years have gone by. It's nice to see there's still a good deal of beauty to be found down there.
Wonderful journey, fantastically filmed. Thank you.
I am instantly in love with you Jon! With how you are with this cute dog. Give me a man like this! Who loves hiking, adventure and dogs! And even looks very nice! Haha... thanks for sharing your adventure.
Loved this video. I really felt I was there with you. Love the music and the stats too. Thank you so much for sharing your walk :-)
Fantastic scenery.... thanks for doing these... very inspiring!
Love the video. My favourite part of this world. Well done completing it
Amazing adventure again Jon. I fully appreciate the effort on the editing on that aswell. Brilliant.... I look forward to the next one 👍👏👏👏
I also recornise the music from the straight story and loved the pictures of the people you met at the end.
Great story - thanks for this. I'm in Somerset, and I've been pondering the SWCP - and I think you've edged me a bit closer!
I live in Newquay Jon and have done most of this walk (in fits and starts) I have all the songs played in your soundtrack currently in my favourites list. ( small world) Forgot who sings Riptide for a few secs though ) Gortoz A Ran is from a superb album. Thanks for a terrific upload, enjoyed every minute. Congrats btw.
Thank you great informative inspirational account of your journey on the swcp
Hi Jon,
I am SO inspired by your beautifully made film of walking the SWCP, I've sat here for half an hour with a smile on my face and been transported to the journey I've wished to make myself for quite a few years now. I have slowly been gathering kit and going wild camping locally with my little dog to get a better idea of things I will and won't need.
I have been reading as much as I can about the path and others experiences on it, which has been great, but your video has really brought this dream alive and now I'm completely inspired and even more determined to do it, so thankyou!!
Kind regards
Sara
hi Sara thank you for your kind comments glad you enjoyed the film.
good luck with your walk I am sure you will have a fantastic time.
on the off chance you need any advice happy to try and help?
all the best jon
Thanks for sharing your trip! Very inspiring, looking forward to hiking a section in early October.
Hi Jon.
Very much enjoyed your video of this trail - well done!
I was impressed by your working through the weather difficulties, but keeping a good attitude.
I am a section-hiker on the Appachian Trail, having completed the first 1025 miles. Hoping to finish one day.
As info, I lived in the UK for 3 years (1963-1966) in what was then called Huntingdonshire. Lived in the towns of St. Ives and Warboys. When I saw you enter the town of St. Ives on the trail, I remembered there were two towns by that name.
Will review your video list on your channel for more trail videos.
Thanks for providing this great video!
God Bless...
Amazing work Jon, I'm planning this myself but will have to be over multiple trips due to family and work. Great video, ATB Adam
WOW - just discovered your channel. I never knew this walk existed. Great effort and a wonderful edit. Going to look at the end page recommendations now.
Absolutle amazing Mr Poulter.
Cheers Jake glad you enjoyed the video.
Lovely to watch, beautifully filmed, very inspiring. 👍👍👍
Great video mate - what an achievement!! Our beautiful country… embarking myself next week, March on 🤘🏻
Oh dear... I think Charlie needs more toe room in his boots. Glad Sky made a full recovery.
That was a very fantastic video and huge inspiration. Absolutely amazing effort 👍
Great video. You should be proud of yourself mate.
I only hike the SWCP in sections as I am not from the uk and work at home has to be done. However every time i return i watch your video. Probably the best hiking video i know! (I’ve seen plenty) such a nice lad you are!
Tomorrow i embark to do the stretch from plymouth to st ives (yes, i walk it reverse) in about 12 days. Unfortunately the airline has lost my luggage but if its arriving tomorrow with all my gear, I’ll be out there.
Hi Ed
Thank you for your comments glad you have enjoyed the video.
Enjoy your hike it’s a great section you are doing now.
But it keeps getting better better enjoy!!!
All the best
Jon

Beautifully filmed and edited. ❤️ Loved watching it and hope someday to do it as well. (Perfect advert for it. 😉)
A lovely video Jon, beautifully edited. It was great to see the people you met on the trail too. I'm slowly working my way up to longer hikes and would like to attempt this one in the next year or so. ATB, John.
We meet again haha, UA-cam algorithm must be the same haha, Your right amazing shots
Fantastic video looked like you really enjoyed yourself!
Just come across this -great video!🙂
That version of riptide at the start... mint
Tried this last year. got 60 miles, This year did it but was 4.5 months, and rested up months at a time in few places, never done hiking before and I'm 47, fancy doing some other treks now,
Skye must’ve been so happy when it finished
Nice video - thanks. If you really wanted to make it useful a little map in the corner somewhere showing where you are throughout the video would be awesome !
Hi Jon ... great video and some fine music to highlight your experiences 🙂 Do you have a track list or spotify playlist I can get the details of what I heard ? I'm a mountain biker & some of my most best trips have been on the West Kernow Way & the King Alfred Way - the South West has so many attractions to be thoroughly enjoyed 🙂
What a wonderful, inspiring record of your journey. Sky looked like such a beautiful companion, I'm glad she recovered quickly. Is she a Lurcher? Thank you for making and sharing this film!
Thank you for your comments glad you enjoyed the film.
Sky is a Bedlington whippet cross
Jon
Thank you loved itxx
@jonepoulter Such a lovely video, thank you for sharing your journey. Can you tell me what dog breed Skye is? She looks like an Irish wolfshound, but smaller? I hope you can help me out :)
Hi Glad you enjoyed the film
Sky is a Bedlington whippet
Hope this helps
Regards jon
Top 👍
❤❤❤❤great
Great video my friend love it keep up the hard work inspiring people I’ve liked & subscribed also stay safe much appreciated Rucksack Adventures 🇬🇧🙂
Well done Jon. I’ve always wanted to do this walk. I’m thinking it may be better to start in Poole. Ease myself into it, any view(s)?
Cheers Peter
I loved this video. I’m starting the route this summer. Can anyone suggest which is the best book with maps to buy for the SWCP?
Paddy Dillon "Walking the Southwest Coast Path" by Cicerone publishing. There are two choices. A 3-volume set which use 1:25000 OS mapping of the whole route but are just maps (no route step-by-step directions). Total cost about £35. Or a single volume of directions and maps using OS 1:50000 mapping (by the looks of it). Cost about £12. I really like the larger scale maps, so have (or will have) the 3-volume set. Pocket sized. Vol 1 weighs 150g and measures 12x17cm. If you already have all or most of the OS 1:25000 maps for the path, these books don't really add much. But if you don't, or don't intend to buy them all, this will save you buying about 16 maps. Enjoy walking the Path - it's amazing. Worth noting - the route is very well marked, at least the part I've done from Minehead to Bude.
I'm a Duff from Duff farm in the book 500 mile walkies .
RIP Boogie .
How did you get around the no wild camping rule?
This is a bit late, but im hoping to follow the path this July (2021), would you be able to maybe post an equipment video?
Hi! is wild camping generally allowed around the South west coast trail?
Really enjoyed that Jon! May I ask what tripod you use? Considering how strong the winds were during the storm, there's hardly any camera-shake. Really great.
hi Chris glad you enjoyed the film, the tripod I use is called joby and is only about 12 inch in size. I think it is also called a gorilla grip?
As the legs are inflexibly and can be moulded to grip vertically on rocks, trees ect.
but to be honest lots of the shots were hand held.
hope this helps
jon
@@jonepoulter7524 Cheers Jon! look forward to your next vid.
What's the best 100 mile section to walk with accommodation? I don't want to carry camping gear.. in June?
I'm an older Aussie woman walking on my own. I'm walking the Portuguese camino from Lisbon before I visit Wales.
Liz
Sorry I can’t help you with that question as i wild camped 99% of the time.
I believe there are many hotels b&b on route so should not be a problem to find accommodation
Enjoy your hike
Jon
@liz, I did CP from Porto last March. Will start SWCP on June 8. Just a portion. See u on the trail.
Wow what a journey, searched for something like this as doing (hopefully) this year a section of the route. Did you have any troubles with camp spots in the way if being moved on etc? Cheers Rob
hi rob, I follow the unwritten rules of wild camping. making camp half an hour before sunset breaking camp half an hour after sunrise and of coarse leaving no mess. I had no problems on my trek of the sw coast path good luck with your trek
all the best jon.
@@jonepoulter7524 sounds just how I roll Jon, appreciate the reply ATB Rob
Hey mate you made it!! I crossed your path around lands end St Ives area I think! It was a grim few days and your friend was storming ahead of you we had a little chat not sure if you remember me! I finished too up in minhead 40 something days! How was the rest of your walk?
hi George
it was certainly a fantastic hike glad to here you also made it
all the best jon
I thought the Pennine Way was the longest trail in UK
Very inspiring stuff!! I found this because I'll soon be setting off to do a fair bit of long distance coastal walking myself, hopefully also videoing sections of it. Can I ask how you've got around music copyright laws here? Have you used some kind of workaround or just trusted your viewers not to flag it up?
Zechariah Lake
🙆♂
Best video of the swcp walk ive seen stunning thanks for sharing
I got goosebumps when I saw the beautiful coastline of UK in this video, and feel to desire to walk there. Thanks uploading.
Thank you for your wonderful journey pictured in this video! The nature in the UK is just bewitching, even the rain has its charm. I live in the northwest of Russia, the forests and lakes here also have their beauty, but still they can't beat the fascination of the British Isles! Also thaks for such a wonderful soundtrack, it was good to recognize some of my favourite songs :)
Thanks for the visuals and taking me along on your journey! I read Raynor Winn's book, The Salt Path, and you gave me a sense of what I imagined as I read it.
I wonder how often did you need to go to towns / shop to buy provisions / how many days did you carry food for? Hard to believe this was summer!
Wow! That is so inspiring! Thanks from Germany for sharing this!
Lovely to watch, and the songs chosen are perfect. Job well done! I hope Skye made a full recovery.
What a lovely little film! Thank you for sharing :) really makes me want to walk it this summer or at least part of it. Very admirable that you camped almost every night!!
Wow, what a journey. This route has been ' following' me for over three months now. Calling my name. You've just inspired me to start planning for my own long distance hike along the coastal path. Not sure how to start planning what to bring with me but I'm sure I'll figure it out.
Amazing 👌 well done 👍
My favourite part is Prawle Point, I go there quite often.
What a nice video. Enjoyed every second of it. Good stuff
Love this! Beautiful views & sunsets. Inspires me to start hiking :-) Great reminder of the stunning nature in the UK. Thanks for sharing!
I loved watching this thankyou. Hopefully coming from NZ in Jun23 to walk some of the path
I start june 8, c u on the trail.
Such a great video! Wonderful story telling and what beautiful scenery. Thank you, it's left me feeling inspired for my own SWCP walk one of these days.
Brilliant video. After watching this many times I walked the whole path in April-May 2022. 45 days and raised £1500 for the SWCPA. This video really inspired me.
Hi Paul congratulations on walking the swcp and raising £1500 very well done!
Regards jon
I'm loving this! I know some of this coastline very well. The undercliffs from lym to Seaton is fantastic, probably my favourite spot in the UK to camp. You've done a great job filming and the editing is superb. Thanks for taking us along
Hi there! I done last summer part of this, from St. Ives to Penzance and this video was a great flashback of memories! I'm planning in August start from Minehead to Barnstaple. Do what you want but I suggest use waterproof socks. I used last time great combo of running socks injinji with 5 toes plus waterproof socks from sealskinz. Whole day hike in the rain and my feet was dry, warm and no blisters. Really recommending to try. Take care! Tom
Thank you very much.❤..Great❤..Sky is ok now?❤Greetings from Germany 😊
Beautifully shot - the amount of work that went into a film so short, well, its almost criminal. I've only walked the Devon element of this walk, parts of which I found gruelling, I had always wanted to tackle the Cornwall segment next, hearing you say the Devon walks are flatter/kinder fills me with nerves and wonder!
What an adventure! And stunning filming. I'm trying to decide between a portion of this hike or the C2C...England is so beautiful, makes it very hard to decide!
Utterly fantastic and was glued from the first mile to he very last, thank you for Jon.
Another fantastic video Jon really enjoyed watching this so many wonderful views and the work you do editing really is first class
I live close to what’s called or used to be called the Solent Way which almost entirely avoids the shoreline of the western Solent. Panoramic views from the new forest to west Wight & the Portsmouth skyline / the South Downs are available initially from private beaches west of Beaulieu River or at Lepe & Calshot that aren’t included on the official route ! Thanks for this 👍
Fantastic video and narration mate, congratulations
I walk sections every weekend and will continue to do so until I can't do it anymore
This was an amazing video, and well done, you for completing the SWCP in some terrible conditions as well, especially the storm.
We set off Monday walking from Exmouth to studland and we are really looking forward to the hike. Thanks for sharing 👍
One of the best walks ive seen on youtube that was epic ty for shareing
Such an excellent film of this beautiful trail. Great ending! So sorry Sky had to leave you. Hope she was OK. She's a beautiful dog!
Minehead is in SOMERSET. (probably been commented before)
This has been exactly what I needed to see after such a wet winter and now spring! Back on the SWCP soon, your video captures the path so beautifully.. thank you ☺️
As always a thouroughly enjoyable summary of an adventure with some amazing shots. Thank you for sharing.
Great video, and congratulations on completing 630 miles. Great to see Charlie join you for some of the journey. Great photography and editing, well done Jon
Beautiful adveture. Lovely editing and shots. Thanks for sharing. PS: So nice that you could take Sky with you. She is adorable!
Brilliant adventure mate. Enjoyed that. Cheers
Lol I love how a dog doesn't give a care. Is like you I don't know what we doing but let's go
Minehead is in Somerset bro
Fabulous journey! Thanks for sharing it. Liked your music choices.
I've just started planning my walk, and this is the first video I've watched. Thanks for the inspiration!
