    People need to stop bothering with the comments about TFL. Its just one example of a car with a warning light on. And TFL is milking it for all its worth to get youtube views. Give this vehicle a chance, its really a great vehicle.

      I totally get if it’s one issue, but JLRs customer service with them resonates with a lot of owners who have made complains of being treated like crap.

    Excellent review and great footage of its off-road prowess. With regard to comments from some watchers re gremlins on new defenders, there are many many examples of gremlins with new SUV’s of other makes. My new Landcruiser had engine overheating problems, Aircon cutting out amongst other issues. The point is that LR are pushing 4x4 design forward, and I am sure that the other makes will end up following suit. I intend to buy a new defender (with 18 inch tires), and I am sure that having got used to the standard of driveability, interior design AND off-road capability of this car it will be hard to step back in time to the more popular suvs like Toyota, Nissan etc. 👍

      Exactly. Well said. 100 % correct. This Defender is a totally new model. I am only aware of rare minor issues affecting some new Defenders. Within the next 6 to 12 months , LR will sort out these things. It is a great vehicle, and I do hope that LR rectify any issues ASAP, and that this new Defender is a reliable vehicle.

    Best review I've seen yet. You actually know what you're talking about and can explain how the car is designed to be used. First time I've heard the bonnet chequer-plate is for pedestrian safety.

    • @aaddrryyss1803
      @aaddrryyss1803 3 роки тому

      That explanation was off.
      JLR wanted the plates there to evoque the old car. They couldn't have them metallic, though (risk of pedestrian decapitation / impalement or something).
      So they went with plastic, completely missing the utilitarian trait of the predecessors.
      They basically look like something that used to actually do something.
      I wish they could be spec-ed out...

    Hands down this is the best review of the Defender I've seen yet - concise, informative, just the right amount of on road testing with a great off road test and honest, unbiased judgement about its capabilities and limitations.
    I think the only thing I would've liked to have seen is how it handles boggy terrain, but as a complete off road novice I'm not really in a place to comment on that. I imagine that hillclimb is a far harder test than anything I'd ever be willing to throw at it.

    As a current LR4/Disco 4 owner with the HD package, I can say that this is the Disco 5 all of us Disco 4 owners wanted. If you go spec by spec it is a Disco 4 upgraded (or retrofitted as the case may be- like the swinging door with mounted spare and Alpine windows which were also on the Disco 1 and 2, not just the Defender). And since I take my LR4 offroad I already know how good this Defender will be. It won’t do it like the old one, or like a Jeep, but it will go about 90% of the places the others will go. Traction and clearance and angles will be just as good, only downside will be articulation will not be as good, especially in the front. The one thing that pisses me off are those 20 in wheels- same issue with the LR4. You can get 18s on the 4 banger but not the six- allegedly the reason is the same as my LR4- the brake calibers. Compomotive UK make 18 in wheels for the LR4 that require no spacers or other mods to fit over the brake calibers, so I assume they’ll do the same for the Defender. With those wheels and a lift (like Johnson Rods) you should be able to fit 33s with no space issues and no trimming, and with that you would have 7.5 inches of sidewall which should be ample for airing down more. I’m waiting to see ARB’s aftermarket bumper for the Defender. With an ARB bumper and winch and 18s with 33s (or maybe even a bit bigger) this will be a very good machine offroad and great on road driver. For someone looking for a load it up (the payload and towing are amazing), go anywhere, do anything vehicle that will also be a daily, where driving long distances will be required, but you’ll never be too far from civilization (cause I’m not sure I’d want to be in the middle of Africa with a veh this electronic), this will be a great option. It really is hitting the niche that the Disco 1 aimed to hit and LR has moved ever further from that niche since the Disco 1 with the Disco 5 really no monger hitting that sale niche. I think with this they are back. They seem to have foregone the niche that the Defender hit- the utilitarian, more hardcore old school offroader, but with Defender becoming a family now not just one veh who knows if maybe they will build something like Grenadier in the future. In my opinion the Disco 5 should have been a Range Rover (the more family oriented Range Rover than either the daddy or the Sport), this Defender should have been the Disco 5, and they should have replaced the Defender with something like the Grenadier. Then they could have decided whether to have the Velar or the Evoque, but I wouldn’t have both. But hey, I dont run JLR so wtf do I know. Btw- when you were running out of clearance, if it is like the LR4 which I believe it is, there is an extra level of clearance. Only to be used to clear an obstacle because you will have air sus maxed out and thus no articulation. In my LR4 I access it by, when you were high centered or nearly so, lowering the sus. It will then hit and raise up into full height giving you additional clearance compared to offroad height. Clear the obstacle, then put it back into offroad height and carry on.

    • @Clove_Parma
      @Clove_Parma 3 роки тому +5

      @@aidanwilson6035 that isn’t true, they don’t know what it is. What are you JLR PR team? Land Rover literally sent someone out from the UK to try fix it, and it’s been in the shop for 20 of the 24 days they have owned it. JLR thought it was solenoid but it wasn’t, and still can’t fix it. You don’t drive a brand new car if it has the check engine light, because yes you absolutely could damage it. Seriously you must be JLR staff or a fanboy idiot if you don’t think it’s a serious issue. For your reference under consumer law in Colorado US, a car has to be in the workshop for warranty repairs for a minimum of 30 days of the first year to make a lemon law claim. It’s now a 24 day old car, and it’s been in for 2/3 of the time required to claim it. Oh and you are ignoring that the cameras all stopped working too. Do you seriously think a car that has functioned that way will not be in the shop for 10 days for warranty repairs in the next 11 months? Seriously stop covering for bullshit by a company that doesn’t care about you, or their customers, putting out vehicles clearly before they’re ready.

      @@dutchydownunder5634 it has a center locker of course, and it has the option of a rear diff locker. They are automatically engaged and disengaged based on wheel slippage and both can act as limited slip diffs instead of simply open or locked, which can be advantageous in some circumstances. However if you opt for the configurable terrain response package, it allows some control over when the rear and center diff locks engage and allows for preset programs combining settings of diff lockers and throttle controls. The front has no diff lock option at the moment. There is some trickery in the traction control system that, using the front brakes, simulates a locker in the front. Hopefully a third party company will produce a front diff lock option in the future

    In actual fact, the body doesn’t really flex at all - that’s the beauty. The new platform D7x is 3 times stronger and any of its closest rivals and is much stiffer than the previous design. The only flexing is in the suspension - the monocoque is very very rigid.

      @War.L _ right. Stop trying to pick a fight I won't take your bait. Your comment that the Defender is superior in only comfort is simply not correct. It has the very best electronic traction control available, some of the best, if not the best clearance angles of a vehicle in its class, it's off road capability far exceeds any other vehicles with the same suspension set-up and is better than many with more "off-road acceptable" set ups. Pick any IFS ute and the Defender will spank it off road, no question. You are entitled to your opinion, but it is not correct.

    • @-A.n.d.r.e.w-
      @-A.n.d.r.e.w- 3 роки тому +1

      @War.L _ Oh so you are capable of a reasonably logical discussion, not just slinging mild abuse… The only reason the G-wagon climbs without spinning wheels is because of the lockers. That’s not traction control, but let’s not be too picky, I agree, lockers beat traction control every time but, ignoring the lockers, as I said, there is none better than Land Rover when it comes to traction control.
      Now, IFS, I’m surprised you didn’t bring up the Bronco. I’d rate that over the Defender but it’s not coming to Oz and I said any IFS ute… No not just the ‘ol yank pickup, or Falcon/Commodores. I’m talking the number one selling 4x4 class in Australia of which the Defender will be better, unless you consider the Ranger Raptor which has the benefit of twin lockers, suspension lift and 33s from the factory. But I’m ignoring that because it’s technically modified (though I reckon the Defender would give it a run for its money).
      I’ll give you a point for the FJ cruiser - that’s a decent, capable car. But the Defender has more ground clearance, better approach and departure angles (childishness alert!), better wade depth, better traction control. Both can be had with a rear locker which leaves the only advantage of the FJ being possibly better rear wheel articulation with the solid axle. That and the fact that you can decently modify it like the Prado… Oh, and by the way, a 2 inch lift and 33’s on an FJ cruiser still leaves it with 115mm less wading depth than the New Defender stock ;)
      And how can you call approach, departure and ramp over irrelevant? It’s certainly not irrelevant to the Gladiator that’s, like, half a meter longer than a Defender 130 and will put its belly on the ground at every opportunity. Yes, you can modify cars which reduces the importance of these angles but they still define what makes up a good off-road platform.
      Having said all that, I would be the first to stand up and say that since you can hardly modify it, the Defender has lost its essence, but we’ve gone waaay off track here. The whole point is that you made an open ended pointless comment that the Defender is only superior in comfort. Which, by your logic is wrong because the G Wagon is at least as good in that department. Then I called you out and you laugh and try to insult me so I gave some points to qualify my position. To this you again try to insult me (maybe try being nice to people?) but at least now you’ve decided to make a point. Oh, and one more thing, the new Patrol is independent all round, but I’d still call the defender better :)

    • @unpluggedkiwi2699
      @unpluggedkiwi2699 3 роки тому +1

      @War.L _ And who in their right mind is going to take a G-Wagon off road. Compared to the G-Wagon, the price of the Defender is a bargain. And the G-Wagon has known issues with the axle diff locks not switching on when required.

    • @-A.n.d.r.e.w-
      @-A.n.d.r.e.w- 3 роки тому +1

      @War.L _ Nah mate, not "given up" just got better things to do with my time. I'ma make this simple for you since your keen to swing whatever way you want and call it proving your point. As I said before, this whole thing got started because you said the Defender is superior in comfort and nothing else. That's just not true - it is a very impressive, very capable 4WD and is more capable than many other available 4WDs. Look, even AsPW agrees with me (on 4Xoverland, lol): ua-cam.com/video/5hbQKgpx-Vc/v-deo.html at the 5 minute mark. Let me quote for you: "It is an exceptional off road vehicle... Terrain Response is an exceptional traction control system". Nuff said? Nah, of course not. Why don't I rant a little more? That's very nice for you that you grew up with a Defender and had wonderful experienced of traveling and exploring and getting in touch with the "soul" of the vehicle. For me it was a 1985 County and a surprisingly similar story. Yes, simplicity is key in a RELIABLE off road vehicle but that's not the point of the debate here. The point is weather the new Defender is any good at anything other than cruising the mall and breaking down and the simple answer is YES, obviously. Anything else is adapting you're point to say something else in an effort to be right. And you know what? We probably agree on much of it. Do I love the new Defender? No. Do I think it's up to the kind of 4x4 I want to do? No. Do I feel let down by the idiots and marketing department at Land Rover? yes. Is the Defender really a new Defender? No - it's a great Discovery. But is it a significantly capable 4x4? Absolutely yes. So was the Disco 4. Is it the best at everything? No. But it does do a lot of stuff very well. Oh, one more lill tid bit: I'd still rate the new Defender over the FJ Cruiser in every way except reliability (which is yet to be truly proven - every new product has teething issues at release). What else ya got?

    Good report/video - thanks. 20" wheels are a no go! With the electronics there are too many things that could possibly go wrong. We took a Discovery 3 up to the cape and due to the electronics and air suspension it limped home. Now the owner had a Prado, no issues.
    Us 4wd's aren't too worried how our vehicles handle around a corner or it's 0-100 times. We want the vehicle to be reliable and simple when tackling the bush or the outback. That means live axles or even IFS at the front end with springs (maybe leafs on the rear). You can modify the vehicle to your required 4x4 activity etc...but with the new defender you can not. Plus the cost of the new defender is ridiculous. Much prefer to buy a Fortuner, MUX or even a Everst, good value and proven reliable vehicles at almost half the cost. Thus i bought a new Fortuner though loved the Defender but couldn't gamble on the electronics....and then the cost.

    I am an 'old' Defender owner (the current one is my 3rd). I do not like the whole strategy and thinking of JLR with the new 'Defender' - at all.
    Having said that, its capability (when brand new and under warranty) is without question. I just don't believe, give LR's durability/reliability that it will be commercially sensible to keep one of these vehicles on the road, much beyond its warranty period. 85 ECUs is just asking for trouble, I'll just leave this here for people to make up their own minds:
    ua-cam.com/video/9K_0w2XTstQ/v-deo.html
    The price at $120,000 is just a complete ^%$-take by JLR. No ute also shows their true cards in terms of who this vehicle is aimed at.
