Many of Thin Lizzy's best albums involving Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson are when these players used Gibson Les Paul Deluxes which have Mini Humbucker pick-ups .
Had this guitar for years and it plays so well
One of my favorite Chappers/Captain demos. Made me go out and search for a Nighthawk. Now my favorite instruments.
My music teacher bought one for the school's band exactly 11 years ago, seeing one now despite his passing makes me weirdly emotional, I still have that wooden resin pick he gave me lol
What a beauty! I really like the look of the black. The two things that I look for in a guitar are how it feels and versatility. The Nighthawk sounds very versatile, much like the Wilshire Pro.
Finally an epiphone strat in a lespolcaster body XD
Yeah they've been around since 1993 - and they were a lot better too.
I bought one of these. It makes me happy that my guitar has the potential to sound this awesome in the hands of a decent guitarist! :P
I absolutely loved the sounds he was getting out of it when he started playing slide...it sounds amazing
Got one when they came out in 94. Cool guitar.
Position 2 in the Blackstar sounded amazing.
I have an epi les Paul standard that I put emg's in and all new electronics and it is a beast. Plays great, stays in tune, was set up perfectly out of the box and is in mint condition after owning for over 5 years. Love it
I bet that Jack Daniels bottle had a lot more in it earlier in the day. ;)
Didn't like the look of these guitars much at first, but this has completely converted me! :D
I've owned one of these in Trans Black for about 10 years. You can really "Feel" the vibrations from the strings so it feels more musical to me. I play mostly at church so contemporary worship style. Neck has an SG sort of feel. This thing is versatile and stays in tune. Love the way it plays. I was never totally satisfied with the bridge slant humbucker. As others have said it is slightly muddy but not terrible. I recently replaced it with a Seymour Duncan SH-4 JB and it came alive. I have much more expensive guitars but this may be my favorite. That new pickup really made it play and sound as good as anything I've played. Love it!! I use the combo of Bridge and Single coil with the coil tap to get strat-ish tones. The new Bridge pickup really makes it cut through a mix and it is really articulate. If you can find them used you can get a real bargain.
that fretboard looks amazing
Now that rocked the house. Awesome use of the Epiphone. Some Killer tones.
It's weird seeing Chappers with short hair. He looks like a boring dorky dad, and now he looks like a psychedelic metal head. Total opposite ends of the spectrum.
Anymore right?
Funny look back. The blessing and curse of the internet
Chappers, that was my EXACT reaction when i saw the black one.
First time i've seen the nighthawk in black and it looks amazing.
I'm not a fan of Gibson at all, but I really like this (and its price). I need to see the video that has yet to be tagged to your hand.
The only thing i dislike is those daft cloud inlays.
this is the first time i've even watched a guitar related video because im thinking of getting one so chill bro
"i had 6 cans of redbull today but that didnt work out" oh man, Capt. you and chappers make the best demos ive seen. you guys are legends xD
chappers without dreads simply isnt the same man
i like how they put binding on the headstock... nice touch...
Glad I didn't give mine to my nephew. I love the darn thing 8 years later. Cheers
Just went and picked up one of these. Got the natural finish - $450 CDN. Wow so much guitar for the money, just awesome.
I love how half way through lee got a full sleeve tattoo lol
I just bought a second hand one of these. It should arrive just before Christmas too. SO EXCITED! :D
I like the half-empty bottle of jack there. haha.
i have the sunburst. it's a wonderful guitar. super versatile too
Damn, why do I watch these videos? I just got an awesome Epi Tribute and now I want the Nighthawk too.
im in love with your guys channel. You guys are just inspiring to watch and enjoy. Cheers \m/
Afaik, mini humbuckers were originally designed as a replacement for P90's, so that players of e.g. pre PAF era Les Pauls or ES models could swap pickups and convert their guitars to humbucker models without having to rout out the pickup cavity.
RIGHT ! on my way to get one ! Cheers !
They are Gibson Brite Wires (.10-.46).. The neck is setup for that size, if you use 9s on it you may have to adjust the neck/bridge due to intonation issues.
I remember the Gibson Nighthawks, they were about 800 quid new. Ah those were the days!
very much like the tapped sound on the mini bucker
Dude what a great humor sense.
Loved the Satriani bit in there.
that is one amazing sounding guitar for such a cheap price
i never was a big fan of epiphone guitars, but i bought this nighthawk a few days ago and what a good surprise, the guitar is amazing. great pick ups, the neck shape is just great, hardware is very good. well build guitar with an amazing tone. u can play any type of music with this, very very versatile axe.
Wow! That's some crazy playing!! Gotta get me some Maplewood coffee
Weirdly I’m here because I’m building a fanned fret guitar and wondering what a straight pickup sound like, rather than the usual angled ones. The nighthawk is basically the same, just the other way around and sounds great!
I love the old Nighthawks. I've been on the hunt for an original 90's model with a Floyd with no succes after 10+ years. They're stupid rare, and people hold on to them. If they do come up, the buyer wants twice what it's worth. Maybe one day I'll get lucky.
+Guitar Whores I was extremely lucky to get hold of one from a Scottish seller for an alright price. This was about 5 years ago and he informed me that there were only around 6 of them in the UK at the time! Needless to say, it's my baby, but I have seen them on ebay since...
I have 2, both with floyd rose. Bought them both new in the 90s. Love them to bits. I haven't seen any more since! Would happily buy another :)
@RobChappers
That's great man.
I always saw good chemistry between you two.
That some serious tone! I'll have to play one at a store if I see it.
anyone else notice the jack Daniel's in the corner?
Give the Captain a guitar. LOVE the CAPT
yeah its true Indonesia does make some good guitars i can vouch for that
beautiful guitar
Wow! This guitar is amazing!
the black version is the most beautiful
you know what, rob - just before you started playing "just got paid" I heard that lick in my head like it wanted to say "I would sound great on that axe right now"...which means that there must be some sort of psychic connection between you and me ;)
Chappers is going bold!!! Welcome to my world!
Roberto yes, he is bold
Indonesia makes some excellent guitars.
My Ibanez was made in Indonesia, I honestly haven't found anything close to its build quality for the price.
That song he played with the "Slide tuning" made me think something bad was about to happen in a Quentin Tarantino film.
Love that tuning!! definitely gonna use it! thanks again chappers for inspiring me to write new stuff! and Chappers was right!!!!
Lee looks like a baddass with a sleeve.
i think the black nighthawk in combination with the blackhotrodstar deluxe nailed a nickelback/theory of a deadman sound ;)!
one of the best greetings intros XD
No, Explorers don't usually have mini HB's, you're probobably thinking of the Firebird.
I love the way the tats just appear at 10.17! lol!
Btw, stick is a crazy man, that boy has quaffed far too many painkillers in his time!
I started out watching this just to get an idea of what the guitar was capable of and ended up watching the whole thing because between the fucking asswhooping sound, simianly superb playing, and the Captain's endearing humor, I was entertained.
Holy shit I just noiticed Capt. has a sleeve of tats. Nice
@BraydonSzafranski Thanks mate, our work here is done ;-)
@JDReNo1 Get the nighthawk, its an amazingly flexible guitar and the built quality is awesome.
It's almost 2014 and Chappers is still right.
its almost 2015 and chappers is STILL right :-D
Halfway to 2016 and he's still right
2017 and chappers is STILL right
2018 and Chappers is STILL right

they sound ok, if you EQ your amp accordingly, but their greatest strength are clean and crunch tones. I use mine primarily with clean and semi clean settings. I consider using a nighthawk just for high gain riffs a waste, besides there are guitars better suited to that task. For drop tuned full bore metal riffs I use a Schecter PT deluxe, because it reacts more precise. When it comes to fast metal riffing you simply can't beat modern Telecaster style guitars with high powered humbuckers.
I used to have an SG with mini humbuckers years ago, and a Bigsby whammy bar. I sold that guitar for way too little.
Chappers you totally rocked this guitar. I just picked up one of these this afternoon from my local music store, I preferred the plethera of tonal options. I got the one in the Blackburst finish. I can't wait to run this through my mustang iii. Which sadly fizzled out on me. But I have another one coming to me from Fender.
that guitar looks more awesome every time i see it :D
How is it that I've been watching these guys for years and am just noticing Captain's sleeve???
I was just thinkin the exact same thing
its fake bro 😂😂 rewind to the beginging and you can tell they put on one of those Halloween things
the ones attached to his guitar!
Great guitar, great review!
That wasn't just maple coffee. It was maple coffee with Mr. Daniels!
This is a very cool guitar. Very versitile. Coud cover a lot of styles. Les Paul, Stratocaster, and Telecaster all in one. Great sound.
Awesome guitar. Great vid btw
Really good french accent Chappers!
my bro has a 90's epi nighthawk (his 1st real guitar).
amazing guitar. new ones are missing the rails pickups but still sound ace
It was a NAMM guitar of the year, back in '90 something. Hell, Dave Davies still plays one, that's good enough for me.
Loving the bit of Satch! surfing with the Aliens :D
Rob speaks french amazingly well (i'm french, i know what i say).
Imagine how bad ass this would be with a floyd rose.. :D
Is it my imagination, or has Rob supplemented his bald spots since this 2011 video?
NIGHTHOG! Comes with a crispy bacon tone!
Got a purple one in a trade versus a partcaster and i really enjoy that guitar
would love to test drive one of those
The Question is why did these guitars get discontinued ? I still want one so bad!
It's a friggin unicorn of a guitar
@ROFLfusionknife It's Tush by ZZ Top but Chappers is playing the riff with a different feel/timing.
I want one so bad.
Right now in a proud Indonesian \m/
Cort do a lot of guitars like that, wouldn't be surprised if it was made in the same factory, considering it's from Indonesia...
You needed to tap that bridge humbucker and then chicken pick. I wanted to see, and I imagine that’s what they were goin for with the slant if it could do tele sounds. I’m trying to decide wether to get one of these used. Hate the headstock but glad that there’s an Epiphone version so I can “afford” it. Seems like a real “Swiss Army Knife “ guitar.
In clean that is,obviously. And I realize I’m early to the party. Just sayin’ to hear myself talk. Cheers, and I wanna see more Chappers and The Cap’n videos.
@JDReNo1 well if the looks don't scare you the nighthawk, it's got WAY more tonal options, and is most likely the better guitar. Though I'd say try em' both if you can.
@iiReVeNQeD Yeah, it's weird. It switches over to another video at 10:12, where he has a tattoo. Maybe they stopped the first clip (without the tattoo) and went to get a tattoo before recording the next clip (with the tattoo)
I have it in honeyburst and with the flame maple top. Sounds great somehow. I expected cardboard and got some decent tones. \m/
you are truly a great man Chappers, rock on! (:
Anyone else find it a tad bit strange that the amp is the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and then shortly after Chappers mentions the amp, the Captain brings up the point of not many guitar have a mini-humbucker. Chappers' response was the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe telecaster, which of course he was right. So does anyone else find that strange that the amp is mentioned then the guitar of the same name?
I have an Indonesian Squier that is a fucking beast. It actually holds tune better than some of the nicer guitars ive got.
Great review!! You have to do more of these, with this kind of guitars (new, cheap, good features along with sound)!!
You should make a review of the new Epiphone Wilshire, with the tremotone! Please, if you do have the time to do so, do it! They're great looking, and a lot of people is curious about the tremotone!
Once again, congrats on these reviews!
This is great guitar, very comfy neck, it beat most Gibsons... So these must be out of stock, buy it if you can... i have this guitar, very hot bridge pup i reckon...
Lee has a sleeve tattoo?????? I NEVER NOTiCED
@summinrandom Looks out for a Blues Hawk. Gibson used to do two variants of that guitar, the Night Hawk and the Blues Hawk which had a P90.
Chappers was right!!! :D
But really, so nice guitar... Amazing for its price, really.
