I've been listening to music since 1991. From pop rock to death metal, from punk to high metal. and I say, without a doubt, trompe le monde is the best album I've heard so far.
Black Francis's lyrics were very underrated. He decides to write a song about a bird who dreams of flying to the Olympus Mons. That's it. Who else would do such a thing?! Brilliant song musically around it.
His words and music put together, Helped me through the roughest parts of my life. My teen years, and young adulthood. 30 years later, and I'm STILL moved. And if I have a son, I want to name him Olympus.
The melodic influence of the Jesus and Mary Chain is extremely apparent on this fantastic song. Its evident that Francis was really into that band at this time, as their great cover of "Head On" on this same album demonstrates. Thing is, he had a vocal range that the Reid brothers (the main guys in the Mary Chain) could only dream of, and that takes this song to another level all together. Brilliantly paced build up of melodic phrasing until the "into the mountain" payoff/refrain.
@@santiagoalonso7257 Palace of the Brine merging into Letter to Memphis is favourite moment on the album. Bird Dream of Olympic Mons is a fantastic title, reminds me of the Max Ernst painting, "Europe after the War"
This song is so beautiful, not a word I'd really use to describe Pixies typically, but it applies here. And "epic" is an overused word, but this is def. EPIC. I miss live music so much 💔
'Speed leaving without warning' - brilliant line which is used twice, split by a little keyboard melody. In the context of the song title you may thing it's related to a spaceship type thing but it is actually about feeling tired out of nowhere and then falling asleep. To dream of the Olympus Mons.
What a tremendous swan song album. Indeed, grows on you with every listen. Which is always the mark of a great record. And the band say in interviews that it was painful to create and produce and they weren't happy with it at the time. In the end though, the Pixies never put out a bad track. Not one. The Clash credited with owning the best record the 80's with London Calling (I'd argue Doolittle deserves consideration) .... Pixies kick the 90's off with that decade's best album, Trompe.
It's just a song about a bird and he's flying around and then, like most birds, he flies into his tree at night and sleeps and then he dreams, and then he dreams about the Olympus Mons, which is the tallest mountain on Mars, a volcanic mountain, like 10 times the size of Everest or something. Frank talking to the BBC Speed leaving without Warning I need some place to sleep tonight Blowing in the rocking of the pine Speed leaving without warning The sunglight is going Into the mountain I will crawl Into the mountain Sun shines in the rusty morning Skyline of the oplympus mons I think about it sometimes Sun shines in the rusty morning Once I had a good fly Into the mountain I will fall
In those years, I was an university student, and my soul vibrated exactly like this. All my dreams came true, but life brougth me others ones. Greetings from Argentina.
Luckily saw them two years ago at Riot Fest, and I swear besides maybe lack of movement, they put on a helluva show and sounded almost jusssst like the original recordings. A little extra flare on some of the tracks. It was amazing.

Darren Martin They were quite good :D they just seemed really tired and didn't have the energy i had seen in live vids of them from their golden period
Probably the best Pixies song ever. I know fellow fans will think differently...... But to my small mind this is the greatest . Rosa and Dolittle are prob better albums but as a stand alone song I don't think I've heard better.
@bluejay55118 KIm's baselines certainly anchor all the Pixies tunes. But I actually think its Joey's "sonic overlay" guitar style that most singly defines the Pixies musical style. Its been said by many a musician since that "threre are no great chords left, Pixies took them all." Could be rephrased "Joey Santiago took them all." Way underappreciated guitarist, and probably more importantly, writer. Methinks this band never gets to this point w\o all 3 of them.
I made this really messed up painting today while listening to this album. For some reason when this song started playing, I dropped the brush and started using my hands. Then it got really fucked up. But I still like it.
Kim was supposed to sing this one. Love the song, but it's so hard not to picture her doing it. I think it would have been even better, and rounded out Trompe so much more.

Black Francis's lyrics were very underrated. He decides to write a song about a bird who dreams of flying to the Olympus Mons. That's it. Who else would do such a thing?! Brilliant song musically around it.
Yes, I agree. Most of the time his lyrics were surreal and abstract.
@@ryandooner1440 And so memorable too. I grew up listening to this and his lyrics really captured my imagination as a kid
Are you on crack? Who ever said his songwriting was overrated?
His words and music put together, Helped me through the roughest parts of my life. My teen years, and young adulthood. 30 years later, and I'm STILL moved. And if I have a son, I want to name him Olympus.
What's wrong with the name Bird Dream? It's a perfectly good name
whenever I'm in a bad place, depressed, or shit mood I turn on the Pixies and it all goes away
Truth.
Same
This is why I am here, lol, my fave...also try Kim Gordon doing addicted to love...you can't stay sad.
Magic exists ...me too
Why r u depressed
I was at a funeral and this song was played as the coffin was carried down from the altar and out of the church.
This was played at my work colleague's funeral too. Kind of chokes me up when I listen to it now.
Well thats made up my mind about my funeral.
This is too great. It always comforts me with the terrible thought of my existence.
Fuck me. That's the definition of awesome. Those huge sonic layer overlays of Joey's in this tune are magical.
One of the best Pixies songs. Beautiful.
I want this played at my funeral.

Definition of a truly beautiful rock song....

the execucioner yep this is my favorite pixies album by far
Criminally underrated.

pixies have been close to my heart since high school.stay forever;)
best highway driving song ever
'Speed leaving without warning' - brilliant line which is used twice, split by a little keyboard melody. In the context of the song title you may thing it's related to a spaceship type thing but it is actually about feeling tired out of nowhere and then falling asleep. To dream of the Olympus Mons.
Huh I never thought about the second time he says it being about falling asleep:)
Superb.Gets better every time I listen to it.
When I die, I want my ashes scattered across the Olympus Mons whilst a live transmission broadcasts this song.
TheWickerMan1981 i'll pilot the ship
And i'll cater. With pizza
I’ll bring the beer.
I'll be on that ship and smile if I remember that it's your ashes onboard. Where you go after death may be the place I die.

Blowin in the rocking of the pines......into the mountain I will fall.......once I had a good life
I adore this song. X
this son is totally inspiring! I love it
Black Francis ~ sings it like he means it and means what he sings
axelXkane if by, he means what he sings you mean, he thinks the words sound good together, than I agree
Although I'm sure he occasionally thinks about the super volcano mountain on Mars from time to time
oh my god! this is unbelievably beautiful
Pixies were never - 'just a band'

Luckily saw them two years ago at Riot Fest, and I swear besides maybe lack of movement, they put on a helluva show and sounded almost jusssst like the original recordings. A little extra flare on some of the tracks. It was amazing.

Superfred YNWA Exactly my opinion. Maybe there is something about Pixies fans and Liverpool supporters. :-)
+Superfred YNWA There is no such thing as best song, there's a perfect song for every moment
+Levi Carvalho Good point Levi. I've never thought of it that way.
Be well and happy.
+Superfred YNWA My fave Pixies tune too. So your never alone in this either ;o). I'm also a Liverpool fan, so maybe j4k154 is onto something there.
