Hi I came across your video and would like your help. have an older Apple Cinema Display 23" M9178LL/A - A1082. How do I connect my new Apple MacBook Air M1 to this older display? Thanks in advance!
Hi I have tried this with the Dell WD15 and it is definitely charging the Apple laptop but nothing is showing up on the cinema display even though we have checked that it is working with an older laptop which actually has a Thunderbolt output.Do you have any ideas why this might be happening please? (I am in the UK in case it makes any difference.) We also bought a less expensive adapter instead of the Apple version and it doesn't work with that either.
Would this solution also work on the 27" Cinema Display with Mini Display which was released mid-2010? Any compatibility issues with new 2020 Catalina OS Macs?
For some reason I can't connect the display using this method to my new MacBook Air, but I can get sound out of it. It was working with my older MacBook not running Catalina.
Can I ask a question? I bought the Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter and want to connect my Apple 30 inch Cinema Display to my new Dell Latitude 7490 which has a Thunderbolt 3 port. Any idea what adapter I need to make it work at full resolution?
Hemal Patel thanks for the comment, the dock can charge a laptop. If you have a 15” MacBook it will charge it slowly. Also if you’re doing very power intensive tasks it will not be able to keep your battery charged fully. For the smaller 13”MacBooks and Air it’s perfect.
Hi there I bought the Dell dock my friend, what I don't know is what ports I need to use, my macbook is 2018 and cannot use the other connector on the Thunderbolt Display, mine is a 27" my question is what ports I must use and how to connect them, thank a lot for the video and the help
You have a 27" thunderbolt display? If so the adapter you need is made by Apple it’s a Thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter. It works with no extra steps. You should return the dock and get this. amzn.to/2D43nRr
So with option1, I'm just using the Macbook power brick and cable. Option 2 delivers power over Type C, but if your using a 15" MBP for intensive tasks the dell dock won't be able to maintain full charge while doing something like video rendering.
Thanks for the video. I own an Apple 27 inch Cinema LED Display (with a mini display port). Will the UpTab USB Type C to Mini Display work if I would like to connect my 2018 iPad Pro with it? I currently have another adapter that works but does not have a USB-C PD port for charging.
Thank you! I bought two 24" LED Cinema Displays and I have a macbook pro 2018 with 4 x usb-c. Can I connect two 24" LED Cinema Displays to my macbook with the DELL WD15 Dock (I saw it has only 1 x mini displayport)?
Is my assumption right, if I wouldn't connect the display usb cables (of both Displays) to the Macbook I would still get my sound from the Macbook and everything else would work?
So USB controls the Brightness and Audio of the Cinema Display and A Dual Cinema Display would take at least 3 type C Ports. ( 2 for Mini display and 1 for Usb A ) Something like this may help. amzn.to/2pO1G2Q

I have a 30 inch cinema display. Would the video be relevant to that machine which has a matte screen or would there be different instructions on how to connect to a USB C MacBook Pro?
Tried the Dell WD 15 to connect my MacBook Pro (2019) with my 24" LED Cinema Display (2011) to simplify my desktop. I had a lot of issues with screen resolution, and Dell advised the WD15 does not support Macbook Pro and would not offer support. Have reverted to cables, which is fine, just not as neat.

Hi, thanks for this video. I used 1st option and connected mu 24" display to MacBook Air M1, but sadly brightness control is not working. Does anybody knows how to fix this issue?
Hi Arikatect, happy new year! Thanks for the video. In my case my Mac mini doesn’t have USB-C. It is a Mac mini late 2014 upgraded with SSD hard drive and still runs perfect. (doesn’t have usb-c), only 1x HDMI; 1xThunderbolt port and 4x USB. The Apple Cinema Display - has 3 cables: 1x MagSafe; 1x Mini DisplayPort (male); 1x USB (A). If you could help I will be gratefully thankful for your help. Already subscribed your channel Rui
Important Note: The cheaper method (option 1) here will NOT work in closed clamshell mode. For this, you will need to have a power-supply docking station. I would also strongly suggest the Ivanky USB-C docking stations for the Macbook Pro.

Thank you for the comment! Yes, the first Uptab adapter will work with all the newest generations of MacBook Air. Also remember to also pick up a type C to type A adapter also so you can have audio, camera, and brightness control.
Well it’s not a Thunderbolt Display. Apples TB2 to type c doesn't allow for display pass through on Cinema Displays. You need a Mini Display port to type c adapter.

Thank you! I bought the dell dock after watching your video, and cinema display works fine now. But it seems like it doesnt charge my macbook pro with just the single cable from the dell dock. Looks like I need to additionally connect my apple charger for power supply. Is this normal?
Yes it normal, the dock seems to allocate power to ports and graphics chip so it doesn't deliver enough to charge the MacBook Pro when under load. I found for best performance to also plug the Apple Charger in
I was using the 180w version of the Dell Dock. It will charge an MBP while doing most daily tasks, It must have to do that the Type C standard can deliver only a 100w and using it for sustained CPU loads such as rendering that it starts to drain faster than it can replace the charge. The LG 5K ultrafine sometimes has the same issues. I do think the benefits of the dock outweigh the slight power delivery issues. This is from experience only an issue with the 15" MBP.

Same issue here. It wont power the Cinema. Works well with Lenovo tho... @arkiatect any ideas?
Would this solution also work on the 27" Cinema Display with Mini Display which was released mid-2010? Any compatibility issues with new 2020 Catalina OS Macs?
For some reason I can't connect the display using this method to my new MacBook Air, but I can get sound out of it. It was working with my older MacBook not running Catalina.
Same here Cinema Display with Mini DP Port won’t connect to my late 2018 MacBook Pro. It does work with my older Mac Mini.
Do you know if this Dell brick system works to connect the new 13” MacBook Pro (M1) with the 28” Apple Cinema Display?
Apple Thunderbolt 27 plus MacBook Pro m1 (Dell wd15) . Normal?
Can you use this dock to also charge the laptop? Just wondering if this will save the hassle of carrying the charger around.
I tried to connect it to M1 mac mini using adapter usbc thunderbolt 3 to 2 and it didn't work not sure how to connect as I like this display??
Were are you buy adapter?
How do you get the power for the computer, with my old mac I was getting it from the Apple Cinema display power cable?
So with option1, I'm just using the Macbook power brick and cable. Option 2 delivers power over Type C, but if your using a 15" MBP for intensive tasks the dell dock won't be able to maintain full charge while doing something like video rendering.
Thanks for the video. I own an Apple 27 inch Cinema LED Display (with a mini display port). Will the UpTab USB Type C to Mini Display work if I would like to connect my 2018 iPad Pro with it? I currently have another adapter that works but does not have a USB-C PD port for charging.
I have the same. Did you get this to work?
Same here, did you get it to work? Thnx!
Thank you! I bought two 24" LED Cinema Displays and I have a macbook pro 2018 with 4 x usb-c. If I buy those two adapters (Option 1) and connect my two displays I would occupy all my USB-C ports on my Laptop. Can I connect two 24" LED Cinema Displays to my macbook with the DELL WD15 Dock (I saw it has only 1 x mini displayport)?
Mohamed Abdel Fattah option 1 would work perfect
You cloud plug the second usb hub from the second Cinema Display into the back of the first one it would save you a type C port.
Is my assumption right, if I wouldn't connect the display usb cables (of both Displays) to the Macbook I would still get my sound from the Macbook and everything else would work?
and I would have then two usb-c ports left over?
So USB controls the Brightness and Audio of the Cinema Display and A Dual Cinema Display would take at least 3 type C Ports. ( 2 for Mini display and 1 for Usb A )
Something like this may help. amzn.to/2pO1G2Q
I bought an $85 apple thunderbolt 2 to usb c adapter thinking it was going link my 24" Apple display monitor to my 2018 macbook pro because the mini display port and thunderbolt 2 look identical ☹ Wish I found this video first!
Does this apply to a 2019 macbook?
I just purchased this Dell Dock as I have a 2011 27" Cinema Display I want to use with my refurbished 2018 MackBook Air. It's working but I can't get better than 1280 x720 resolution which is pretty pixelated.
Try this.

Same here. Have you figure the solution? thanks
My suggestion and what I have just done is option one with USB C extensions so you can hide adaptors under table 👍👍
i tried that first option but im only getting audio any suggestions
hi, can you send to me the link in amazon from the adapter mini display to type C, please, a can´t found the same that you use, thank you
Thank you!! This was super helpful and simple!
Curious what connectors to use with a Mac Mini - which has HDMI out. I have a Cinema Display gathering dust that I'd like to use on a 2019 Mac Mini.
How do I run a a1407 apple 27" display with an iMac 27" mid 2010... Both have Thunderbolt ports. When I use it with my mid 2014 macBook pro it works perfectly, but not with my iMac!!!
Hi, thanks for this video. I used 1st option and connected mu 24" display to MacBook Air M1, but sadly brightness control is not working. Does anybody knows how to fix this issue?
Were are you buy adapter?
Hi Arikatect, happy new year! Thanks for the video.
In my case my Mac mini doesn’t have USB-C. It is a Mac mini late 2014 upgraded with SSD hard drive and still runs perfect. (doesn’t have usb-c), only 1x HDMI; 1xThunderbolt port and 4x USB.
The Apple Cinema Display - has 3 cables: 1x MagSafe; 1x Mini DisplayPort (male); 1x USB (A).
If you could help I will be gratefully thankful for your help.

Thanks mate, very clear and concise!
Thanks for the video, crystal clear for the MacBooks. Will it work with the 2019 5k iMacs?
Option 1 should work with nothing else. but won’t work with the 27” Thunderbolt displays.
Can you not connect via the Apple TV 4K box ie. via AirPlay?
Important Note: The cheaper method (option 1) here will NOT work in closed clamshell mode. For this, you will need to have a power-supply docking station. I would also strongly suggest the Ivanky USB-C docking stations for the Macbook Pro.
Is there any way to connect a cinema display 24 inch with thunderbolt display 27 inch like dual monitor?
Hi, great video and very informative ! I have a Apple Thunderrbolt 27" Cinema Display that I have had for sometime and still works very well with my Mac Mini Server , however I know would like to connect a Microsoft Surface book to the display, would the Dell WD15 Dock work ? Look forward to your reply.
Prakash Tailor nope, the dell dock is not a thunderbolt device.
Hi! I recently upgraded my laptop from a 2017 MacBook Pro to a 2020 MacBook Pro. I was connecting a Cinema Display to the 2017 laptop via Uptab with no problem, but for some reason I’m having trouble connecting to the new laptop. The strange thing is that the audio connects with the USB adapter, but my laptop doesn’t seem to be recognizing the Uptab adapter at all, so the visual display isn’t working. Any ideas of what’s wrong?
I'm having the same issue.... the audio works with my 2020 MacBook Pro BUT the display will not work using the UpTab
@@jillianoconnell5305 FWIW I sold my monitor and bought a new one :/ not ideal but I could not find a solution that worked and needed a functioning monitor for work
Hello, i have a question from Holland, I have a CINEMA DISPLAY 24 inc as above in your video, does this solution also work on the macbook air 2018? I want to buy to macbook, but Apple says they dont have a adapter.
Thank you for the comment! Yes, the first Uptab adapter will work with all the newest generations of MacBook Air. Also remember to also pick up a type C to type A adapter also so you can have audio, camera, and brightness control.
My brother recently gave me one. I bought a usb-c to thunderbolt adapter but it isn’t working. Any clue why?
Well it’s not a Thunderbolt Display. Apples TB2 to type c doesn't allow for display pass through on Cinema Displays. You need a Mini Display port to type c adapter.
Thank you for the info! I tried option 2 to connect to my mac mini to the cinema display. Unfortunately the resolution is very poor. I tried to adjust it but there is only one option. Any thoughts?
Hi! Were you ever able to resolve your resolution issues? I'm having the same problem, so would appreciate any solutions you may have found! Thanks!
Kim Johnson Yes! Were you using the Dell adapter? I just replaces it with the cheaper option and it worked!
@@amirzahedani381 Yes, I'm using the Dell. Assumed the more expensive/cleaner option was better, but alas, sounds like I was wrong! I'll get the cheaper adapters and try that. Thank you so much, Amir!!
YASSS the answer I was looking for!!!
Any luck connecting a cinema display + an thunderbolt audio interface to a macbook pro 17 late 2011?
My macbook has only one mini-display port.
Thanks
Hi Arikatect. Could this solution be applied when trying to connect a 24 inch cinema display to a mac mini?
Which Mac mini?
It works with my Mac mini. Late 2015, I think. The monitor has a mini DP port (which looks the same as a Thunderbolt port, so check the icon on the connector: thunderbolt is a lightning bolt icon, MDP port is a monitor icon.
I do have trouble connecting the 27-inch Cinema Display to my MacBook Pro 2018.
can this be done with the 2019 mac book pros' thunderbolt display has to many problems
F J should work just fine.
Hello.... what about the 20” (maybe a1080?) to 2019 MacBook Air? I’m so confused!
Great videos and info. Thanks for helping. I have a 30" Cinema Display A1083 and want to use it with my 2017 MacBook Air (no USBC) with Thunderbolt. How do I do that and get 2500 x1440 resolution? Thanks.

@@arikatect9237 Any less expensive alternatives? Thanks.
@@mattsanders4653 Since apple doesn't make it anymore, check on eBay for a used one. I know that adapter has a specific pin out made for the 30" monitor. I also think it has a special control module built inside that allows for the resolution.
Hi Arikatech, do you know if it is possible to connect a 2nd Cinema Display (mini display port) to a Macbook Pro? thank you
Did you figure it out? I'm trying to do the same.
what about connecting it to ipad pro
Do you have brightness control in system preference with Led Cinema Display 24"? I connected the monitor to a mac mini late 2012 (mini DP) but the same is recognized as iMac and not the brightness control from the keyboard (F1 - F2) and the operating system (El Capitan). The brightness is at maximum, I can't control the brightness! Can you help me?
thank you bro - well done and informative
Thank you! I bought the dell dock after watching your video, and cinema display works fine now.
But it seems like it doesnt charge my macbook pro with just the single cable from the dell dock. Looks like I need to additionally connect my apple charger for power supply. Is this normal?
I have 27inch cinmena display
Hey Arikatec!, I have the dell dock the display and a macbook pro 23 inch 2016, I am connecting the dock to the usb c port in my macbook, the thunderbolt output from the display to the dock, and ignoring the magSafe, but somehow the display doesn't seem to turn on or detect the computer.... any thoughts?
Return the dell dock, it sounds like you have a Thunderbolt Display. The dell dock doesn't support thunderbolt displays. You need Apples Thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter which is linked in this video I made.

Connecting an 27" Apple Cinema Display via the Dell W15 to a MacBook Pro 13 inch 2018 os 10.14.1 gives me a resolution issue. With or without mirroring the displays, the Cinema Display is limited to 1280 x 720. Any ideas how I can make this higher?

Would Dell WD15 180W work with a Macbook (early 2013) using USB-C to USB adapter to connect to an Apple Cinema Display?
Are you asking about the MacBook with only one type c port? If so I would imagine that it would work.
@@arikatect9237 no its Macbook with USB (not USB-C port) so using the docking station and connecting to Macbook using a USB to USB-C adapter
F Syed oh, well then I have no clue, my guess is probably not. You’re Mac would work the the Cinema Display with out the dock.

I have the 2019 MacBook Pro (which I just got), Dell WD15 180W docking station and 30” Apple Cinema Display. When I connect it to the Cinema Display it shows the display for about 30 seconds then turns blank.
However, the same Cinema Display works just fine when connected directly with my MacBook Pro (early 2013).
Does this mean the Dell docking station is defective?
the Dell WD15 with a 2019 macbook pro works fine with my 24" cinema display. HOWEVER when I use the full screen mode from UA-cam or Netflix etc I get a black screen... anybody maybe know how to fix this ?
take the 180W instead 130W. problems solved...
I have a 23" Cinema Display with DVI connection. I have it connected to my mid-2010 MacBook Pro's Mini Display Port with Apple's DVI to Mini Display Port adapter. The just released Mojave Mac OS is the first new Mac OS that will not run on the mid-2010 MacBook Pro. Looks like it's time to get a brand new 2018 MacBook Pro. Will the Dell dock you've shown allow me to continue to use this DVI Cinema Display or do I need something different or something additional?
mopac001 should work since it has a mini display port on the dell dock.
Hi mopac001, did this work ok? what solution did you go for?
james hofton both the adapter, or the dock should work since it’s a simple DisplayPort connection.
i buyes the Dell dock and a Thunderbolt display from apple... but the cinema display dont turn on.. with the dock! and in my older macbook air it works perfectly

Is it possible to power the laptop via a USB A to C cable, where the A-end is plugged into the cinema display as well?
TejrnarG the answer is no, the Cinema Display can’t deliver enough power through its rear ports.
@@arikatect9237 That's a real pity! But still nice to know that I can still keep using my display. : ) Thanks for the video! It helped me find the adapter which should do the job. There are many USB-C to MDP adapters out there, but for most of them, somewhere in the comments you can read of a sad customer that found out that it doesn't work with the Cinema Display. This uptap one here is the only one I found (or rather you found) which explicitly states on the page that it works with the Cinema Display. Mine should arrive on Monday. Will test it with the new MacBook Air, and report here if it works! ; )
