  • Here I review an ink by Rohrer & Klingner, one of their Iron Gall inks, by the title of "Salix" (a very well-behaved ink that remains Blue rather than just morphine into gray). Here-in may be found my own thoughts and opinions on the matter, as well as some test results I have for (among other factors) water-resistance on Clairefontaine, Rhodia, Copier Paper, Mead Notebook Paper, Tomoe River Paper, and Moleskine papers, and using both a Pilot Vanishing Point in Broad, and a Knox Galileo in Fine as pens for these tests/experiments.

Rohrer and Klingner...first time you hit the nail with your pronunciation! Perfect! Thanks again for this video

First, I want to thank you for all of your reviews! I find them really helpful and I enjoy the tests on multiple papers since, like a lot of people, I don't get to choose what I write on at work all of the time. I recently bought a bottle of Salix and I've since decided it's one that I'll keep a pen inked with all the time. I've found it to be well behaved under all sorts of circumstances and I appreciate that it shades even on the cheap stuff. For anyone on the fence, I recommend getting a bottle!

Holy biscuits, VittaR! When *was* the last time you saw ink with no feathering on such cheap paper? For that matter, when was the *next* time you saw ink with no feathering on such cheap paper? I am on a quest for no-feather inks, and this ink (Salix) is the only ink I've found that won't feather on AMPAD yellow legal paper. I wonder if there are any others? Salix is the only Iron Gall ink I've tried; it works so well that I'm adding a bunch of other IG inks to my "I want to try these" list.

Another great review. I recently started using this ink. On CF 90gm, with a wet nib, it is deep blue, no shading. Great flow, in the Delta Zen, OB nib, this ink flows better than any other ink I had in this pen. I've had some inks have flow issues in this pen. I have a few other R&K Inks. They all are very interesting.

Love your reviews and your style! Thanks for taking the time to do these (and welcome back!)
This is my favorite ink of all time, and one that I'm convinced everyone should have. Great professional (yet not boring) color, fantastic performance on poorer quality papers, great water resistance, and yet somehow still easy to clean. What more can you ask for?
Also, have you tried R&K's other iron gall ink, Scabiosa? (I think I might have recalled you saying in another video that you're not a huge fan of purple, although I don't remember. Scabiosa is a lot dustier and grayer than your average purple)

Matt Taylor can I use this in my pilot med nib. I may go three days no use. When I do use half page to several pages writing. Steel nib. Or will I have to be rinsing the nib in the sink often. With regular Pilot Namiki Blue/Black never clean my pen. Over year use. Got lazy when realized not needed.

Thanks for taking your time and making these videos - just wanted to ask how is the lighting when you shoot these videos? It seems that you use incandescent lights, or a light that has warm colors? Perhaps by using temperature-neutral lights, the ink color may show accurately, along with the color of the paper? Just a thought, thanks again! :)

It was a while back when I asked what sort of ink would work on 3rd world country paper. Let's just say I found the ink and you should definitely do a review! Akkerman #10 with a Visconti London Fog and a JUICY 1.3mm stub Pd Nib and here is the real shocker. It works on receipts! No bleed no feathering and even on the opposite side barely any showthrough! I'm just shocked, if you've seen the kind of paper is used here in South East Asia you will seriously be overwhelmed. I even found that the more worse the paper is, the better the flow! The general consensus is that Akkerman's IG formulation is quite similar to Diamine Registrars Ink just with much better flow. Knowing you have quite a lot of knowledge with IG inks and restoration of old documents. I was wondering if I should worry about any staining possibilities in my Visconti's so called celluloid/acrylic barrel. I've notice a few clear droplets of sediments on both the barrel of the pen and in the barrel of the Travelling inkwell. It seems like the sediment sticks to the walls but with slight shaking it disappears. Should I worry at all about this IG ink? I worry that the sediments may "eat away" the plastics of the barrel and inkwell. Is this something I should worry about if at all? Atm my Pilot 823 is the torture pen. I've been intentionally letting the ink dry out on it by not using it but I've yet to see any problems. I apologize for the long comment. I was wondering if you'd be interested in a 6ml vial to do a review of this ink. I think you'll love it and did I mention the sort of shading I get with the stub Nib?

Jafar Uddin I am from south east asia, Singapore to be exact and I would like to ask if you tried the salix and if it works well on our paper, and how the akkerman compares

I have not tried Salix but Akkerman performs MUCH BETTER than salix. As long as you write using a F or M nib, I use a japanese M from my Pilot 823, I can write on ANY paper here in South-East Asia. If I can do that with a M nib, I'm sure any paper you encounter will suffice. Try the Akkerman #10, there isn't any better IG ink! =) Also my Visconti London Fog with a 1.3MM STUB works with some of this shitty paper! Akkerman #10 is really special, think of it as Diamine Registrar's Ink with better flow and no clogging issues.

LMAO @ "now brace your ears because I'm gonna murder this". Your pronunciation actually wasn't too bad. (Pro tip for your next Montblanc review though: the T and the C are silent.) ;)

If you like this ink you might want to try Ecclesiastical Stationery Supplies Registrars Ink:
    www.registrarsink.co.uk/registrars_ink.html
However, you can't buy a sample. It only comes in a 110ml plastic tub from England. I discovered this ink on the Fountain Pen Network after reading a review of it by "Sandy1." You should definitely check out her reviews. They are fascinating. I left a comment that I was interested in the ink and a kind fellow mailed me a sample vial. I'd be happy to do the same for you if you're interested. Here's the review from Sandy1:
