MB, there is nothing WORSE than finding the ONE! If you do, you won't need to get more, and you won't have the fun of looking through your collection every morning!😂 great video!
@@thevineclimber Thanks Anne. I have just bought the Farmer X. And this really could be "the ONE". It is awesome. Video to follow in a couple of weeks.
Great review. I have the FarmerX which is a PioneerX with a saw. Get both the scissors and the saw on that one. Amongst my other tools, other SAKs, Leatherman I find I use the FarmerX most often.
@@MB_EDC I am a semi retired, an old woodswalker or Bushcrafter as they are called now. It might be just wishful thinking but it seems to me that alox models hold an edge better than the standard ones . Please keep this in mind during your video
@garyjacobs2789 Interesting. I have not noticed that myself. The Alox models definitely have thicker blades. Maybe that makes a difference with the blade edge geometry.
Great. I also have a bunch of Victorinox Knifes and every morning I decide what I have to do and wich one I will carry. Job, hiking, edc, picnic, business meetings... There is always a Victorinox that fits. 😍👌
I've got 2 alox models, the Farmer and the Farmer X. When I bought the Farmer it was a few pence cheaper than the Pioneer! I bought the Farmer X over the Pioneer X because it was just a few pounds more than the Pioneer X. I use both for urban carry as the saw layer is minimal added weight and thickness. The last week I've been carrying the Farmer together with the Jetsetter I bought a month ago for a business trip, this is a very good toolset with no redundancy. As to smaller alox models, I think I'd opt for the Cadet over the Bantam, the reason being that I prefer the 2 openers for all kinds of prying and screwing tasks, and again I think the thickness/weight difference between the 2 is minimal.
Thanks Eric! There is something about the Alox SAKs that seem more stylish, more professional that makes them my favourite carry. I don't tends to use tweezers/toothpick a lot when I'm out.
The Bantam is great in terms of minimalism, but for more heavy duty use I like the Electrician. Still quite compact, but sturdy. It has a thicker cap lifter/screwdriver, awl, and the small blade is perfect for opening boxes, etc.👍
@@spheremotel1772 Scissors are probably my most used tool.. One option is to pair your Electrician with a 58mm with scissors like the Classic SD. You hardly notice it in your pocket or on your keychain and it's so useful... Or my favourite the Midnight Manager...
The electrician is basic EDC knife. As I lie in the countryside I chose the Farmer X as secondary blade. I’m waiting for a Pioneer X, a Swiss Army 2 and an Excelsior Alox to come in 2 days, may be my EDC knife set will change in the next week !
@@MB_EDC I already had a Spartan and a Climber then I discovered the Alox series deeper… Next ones will be the Alox Cadet and the 100 mm pruners (for my wife…)
I have both and I agree about the Pioneer X being slimmer. It is my city/office carry. But for weekends I am happy to carry the Farmer X and have the saw and scissors.
I like the Victorinox alox soldier! No longer made of course but I have a few and the nice thing is they are year stamped and I edc my birth year model! Pioneer is same specification albeit with that annoying keyring that bites on your hand!
That is the great thing about the Army7 (Harvester) - no keyring. My birth year is 1962. A soldier of that age is over $400!!! I would never carry it...
@@MB_EDC Mine is 66 and is the Elsener/Victorinox with pat+ on the can opener! I was lucky I found it a few years ago for £20 here in the UK it was advertised as a 99 year pioneer by the seller ,looking at the stamp upside down! I love these as the tools are thicker than the later models of soldier and pioneer! I guess a 62 year would be Red alox and I did have a 63 version but in Wenger!
My ideal SAK would be a Bantam X Alox, but since it doesn't exist I daily carry a Bantam Alox (in pocket) and a tiny Jetsetter (in my bag). I've been eyeing the James Brand Ellis bc it seems to be what I am looking for but the price and shipping fees are really offputting, also I just really love my Bantam
The reason to buy an Alox model IMO are the thicker blades and inline awl. So the Pioneer, Pioneer X are great knives. The can opener (even though it's rarely used as a can opener) with 2d Philips and flat blade screwdriver (which makes a great pry tool because of the extra thickness) make those knives invaluable. By taking two blades which are good in a pinch and replacing them with the thinner combo tool (which is barely good for anything by comparison) the Bantam looses too much functionality vs it's slightly thicker Pioneer big brother. That's how I see it at least.
I agree, except that the Pioneer is not just slightly thicker than the Bantam. The Bantam is incredibly thin. I would almost always chose a Cadet over the Bantam due to the normal opener layer, but the "scales" of the 84 mm alox make them so thin and light that they can hardly be compared to 93 mm Alox. The Bantam is a "much better than nothing" option which disappears anywhere, even in a wallet. A Cadet is more functional but already bigger, and the Pioneer range is a lot more capable but also significantly heavier and bigger.
Great discussion guys! I think it's all about sorting out the best EDC for you're day. I am a fan of three combination tool on the Bantam. It is so slim you can include it in virtually any pocket kit or wallet. Haven't tried the cadet - but I'm sure I will at some point. I love the Pioneer X and the Army 7 has great capability.
@RiderOftheNorth1968 Thanks brother. I have a few Victorinox videos, including the individual reviews of the three Alox SAKs mentioned here and my EVERYday carry - the Midnite Manager.
I have tweezers in some other kits that I carry and don't use them much at all when out and about. Have you considered carrying a Classic SD. It has the toothpick and tweezers and takes up almost no room at all. Some people carry them in their keychains.
this is my everyday carry gear hidration bag one ham radio hand held extra batterys also police fire scanner extra batteries and some lunch as I work with law a police department
I never realized the Bantam Alox was so thin! Nice
Thanks. It is the best single layer SAK.

Now having a Farmer x wanting the best, but felt that i should had gone with a Pioneer x. Slightly slimmer, not going to use the saw everyday.

Farmer X has saw and everything Pioneer X has.
This is true. I didn't have a Farmer X when I made this video. I do now!😁

Those are some great options! Awesome video, buddy!

The small red knife is my choice to carry always. It fits perfectly in the watch pocket on dungarees.
Which one do you have? The Classic SD?
That's how I carry my Classic SD, if I'm wearing jeans. With dress pants I just slip it with one of the other SAKs I carry in my front trouser pocket.
@la_old_salt2241 I have just bought a Classic SD Alix to try it on my keychain.
Not quite a minimalist choice is the two layer Farmer -- perfect for my emergency pocket kit, and it's definitely a tool rather than a toy!
I haven't tried the Farmer. But I recently bought the Farmer X. That is quite chunky.
Thanks for the upload.
The last month or so I've been carrying the serrated spartan (weekener) as its nice and light in shorts pockets.
Cheers 🍻
