    Maybe you've heard the hype, maybe you haven't. Douglas' brand new 5wt fly rod is certainly making waves in an industry that constantly rewards innovation and performance-based design. This rod has been touted as the best 5wt fly rod on the market and some people have even claimed it's the best trout rod of all time.
    How does it compare to the NRX+ LP?
    The first iteration of the G. Loomis NRX LP was one of our favorite dry fly rods of all time. The rod was lightweight, extremely accurate, and provided the angler with loads of feedback and feel. In some ways, I think the old version of the NRX LP shifted the industry in a new direction; after Loomis' success with the old NRX LP, rod companies like Sage, Thomas & Thomas, Orvis, and others have put time, research, and money into a moderate-action dry fly rod series.

    It would be nice to have a comparison to the old NRX LP.
    How does it cast with the Wulff TT? I use it on all my old NRX LP rods. On the underdog 9' 4WT LP, the Wulff TT is pure casting pleasure!
    I was surprised to discover the RIO Technical Trout casts very well on my old 5WT LP.

      Hi Rob! Everyone who casts the Sky G says the same thing. The LP is a great Dry Fly rod, whereas the Sky G might hold the slight advantage in the overall category. You cannot go wrong with either one. Tight lines!

    Thank you. We appreciate your videos. Respectfully and ideally, they would be tested with their optimal lines, as it makes a very significant difference. IMHO, most knowledgeable/skilled casters would not want an MPX or Perception (still very heavy) line for an LP series Loomis or similar rod. I realize you said you didn’t have it with you, but it appears that MPX is typically what is used in the videos. Kind regards.

    • @modicksey7349
      @modicksey7349 4 роки тому +2

      Ryan Stines there are no such thing as a optimal line for any rod, its all subjective
      What one guy finds perfect for a spesific rod another finds that setup horrible too heavy or too light
      The reason alot of people are using MPX is simply that it is a good allround line for most rods
      And skilled casters can easily overload the rod a full size heavier or a full size lighter without problem
      We are now in 2020 and thesedays premium rods should be able to use a whole range of lines without problem
      But its all up to you to find out which setup works for you but it might not suit the next guy

    • @ryanstines9748
      @ryanstines9748 4 роки тому +6

      Right, Mo. It is subjective. It’s subject to my humble opinion and many others. We’re talking about a $795 dollar Lite Presentation rod for discriminating anglers. To me, the purpose of reviews is to try and extrapolate the tiny details of the taper of the rod and its stiffness within a taper. If the reviewer is going to the extent of evaluating these rods using a decimal system, it seems very reasonable to try different lines to the point you find the optimal one for it’s intended purpose. In this case, at heaviest a Rio Gold and better yet, an SA Trout taper. Using a short tapered/heavy headed fly line will still work, but takes away from the sweetness of the intended Lite Presentation. If you want more “general/non-specific “ reviews using any line, that’s completely fine. But in my opinion and many others, niche-type rods absolutely have optimal lines worthy of being reviewed using a decimal system.

    I noticed that you used, what appears to be, a Lamson Liquid on both rods and wanted to know if you had any issues getting the reel to fit the Sky G reel seat? I recently got the Sky G 5wt, but the foot on both my Liquid -5+ and the older 'size 2' version are too big for the reel seat on the rod.

      The LP has a softer tip for delicate presentations, and the Ultralite is a little faster. If you are fishing a spinner fall with a longer leader and light tippet go with the LP. If you plan on fishing meadow streams with caddis and terrestrial patterns pick the Ultralite.

    • @Tridentflyfishing

      Both are top-notch trout rods for smaller rivers and it's tough to go wrong with either. The Sky G's tip is softer than the NRX+ LP and is great at presenting flies at shorter distances. The NRX+ has a stiffer tip which can help with casting nymphs and smaller streamers.

    Its time to stop using "made in the USA" as a guarantee of build quality. The old NRX LP were crap in terms of build: Misaligned guides, really rough sanding on the pitted cork, and hit and miss varnishing and glue jobs. These rods were built in the Loomis factory! Hardy rods, by comparison, are built in Korea and they're jewels. It comes down to management standards and quality control, not which country its made in.

At that price point Douglas needs to figure out how to make things in the US or drop the price by a couple hundred on the Sky G. I’ll take the NRX+LP
