Vortex was one of the first "big" coasters I ever rode, but I have to agree, towards the end it was rough. I would come away with massive bruises on my shoulders from the restraints the last few times I rode it.

Every single time I see a video titled something like, “Roughest Steel Roller Coasters” I *have* to click on it because I know that without fail, Anaconda at Kings Dominion will make the list every single time and honestly I get such a joy out of that. Hands down the WORST, roughest, and most painful coaster I’ve ever been on!! Glad it makes the list every time.
My home park has some rough coasters but nothing can compare to the horrendous ride I got on Gemini in 2022, that is actually the roughest piece of trash and I’ve ridden rides like hades 360 and loved it but Gemini is one of the only coasters I can’t stand for roughness.
I really appreciate the pre-list stuff like honorable mentions or "one bad ride." It's completely unnecessary from a youtube perspective and probably doesn't draw any more viewers, so it's basically just extra work you're putting in for the fans' gain. Like you said, man of the people.
I like to go thru my credit list and pick out coasters that COULD make the list, then filter it down to the top 15 or 20 or whatever makes sense, but those honorable mentions at least show that I considered something that didn't make the final cut. It definitely saves some of the "hey, what about..." questions
Haven’t rode this one as it was torn down before I was able to ride it, but my friend said it was so rough he couldn’t see the track because he was shaking so much. The track was rusty for a decade before it’s closure, and you could tell halfway across the park. The ride was dragon at Adventureland, Iowa.
Great video! Every time I get off of Banshee, I have a headache. The coaster is an awesome invert with a great layout, crazy pacing, and some good forces. Put it tracks oddly. Goes to show that even steel coasters can get rattles or vibrations.
Came down to train for me. Teal was the worst, purple was hit and miss, blue ran the best. Feel like all the B&Ms at Kings Island have some sort of rattle though outside Orion
Not in America, but Rolling X Train in Everland in S.Korea (the same park as T express). It’s an old Arrow model, build by Vekoma in ‘88 and … I can’t remember a ride where I got off with more hatred for an experience. Drop Loop Loop Turn Double corkscrew Helix Finish.
I worked at CDR (Mrs. Knott's Chicken Dinner Restaurant in 1999 and took advantage of my I.D. numerous times to ride Ghostrider and even Headslammer a few times. I would've thought Matterhorn at Disneyland would've made at least an honorable mention. Great list Chris.
I rode anaconda for the first time in 2023 and I have to say that I really liked it. I got 2 night rides and it ended up being one of my favorite coasters at Kings Dominion. Didn’t really find it rough
As someone with Dorney as my home park, you're right about Hydra, it wasn't a one-time thing. I do not understand it. It's the only coaster I've ever been on that's rougher in the front than in the back.
I actually rode Goudurix and tbh, I was expecting the worst, but surprisingly it ran pretty good! I only got like 1 or 2 rough spots but the rest was all good
I was surprised how much I enjoyed t3. I went in expecting one of the world's roughest coasters, but I found it to be a little janky at worst. SLCs have a good layout too and they're pretty intense. Strangely, the roughest steel coaster I've been on is Fahrenheit. I may have just rode it on a bad day, but that ride's rattle was brutal lol
Vekoma hang and bangs(Kiddy Hawk and Flying Ace Arial Chase) both tracked really rough for me. Thankfully the restraints on the one at Kings Island were further apart so that at least eliminated head banging.
You mentioned that sometimes you just get one rough ride. That was our experience with Magnum XL 200 this summer. It was so rough we only did one ride. It didn't rattle it it bounced on the tracks likes a poorly maintained wooden roller coaster, only it was going 70 MPH. The "airtime" hills at the end made every male on our train vocally grunt as we went over them and got racked. Our entire party agreed it was the worst experience of our trip. I know a lot of people love it, but our experience was rough.
Kings Island better plan ahead on the Vortex plot for a new coaster. I have always heard that the Vortex foundations were sinking. Petty much the whole park has that problem. The early years of Vortex were a pretty smooth ride. Then a 10 or so year gap for me riding, it was really rough. Still miss this picturesque coaster. Video idea: Top picturesque coasters. Layout, setting, lighting, theming....
I think originally that area was filled with water for the canoe ride years ago back when they did the Brady bunch episode. Sounds about the right area for it and the conditions you mentioned make me think that was where the water was originally back there.
The Beast had a pond under the station (I wish they would bring it back). They drained it to put in Vortex. You may be right about that low spot that Vortex had could have been the canoe pond. I don't remember how far the pond under Beast went back in the day.
Ok two things: One, the first time I rode Magnum I absolutely hated it. After getting a few more rides, I actually kinda enjoy it (despite the jank transitions) Two, 11:35 was freaking hilarious lmao.
I’ve not been on many coasters (30 to be exact) and luckily, not one of them was rough (by that, I meant I disliked the ride.) the 2 rides I would probably say are rough are scorpion at Busch gardens as it was prity shaky, but I still enjoyed it. I’ve also been on one SLC (mind eraser at elitch gardens) and I actually enjoyed it (the bulky restraints were padded and wasn’t shaky) I went on it twice and is my 6th favorite coaster, I still prefer montu, but It did not suck.
Steamin Demon at Six Flags Great Escape. That's the first ride I thought of when I saw the video description. As a kid it looked so majestic from the highway. I didn't get to ride it until I was an adult. Wow...what a disappointment. Really rough, but at least it was very short.
NightHawk at Carowinds punched me in the back of my head so hard it made me dizzy. X2 last month was as rough as I can ever remember it being, and it's never been super smooth. RailBlazer red train had some extra rattle last month too. Great vid, I'd forgotten how rough Desperado was, ugh. I agree with you on so many of these, especially WindJammer, how did they fit all that failure into such a small footprint.
I'll defend Goudurix. I only rode it in 2019 and found it smooth. Others who rode it that year also noted it was riding better. Apparently they did something to make it ride better.
I saw the title and immediately knew that Flashback had to be top of the list. It was so bad it was almost fun. The one I'm surprised wasn't even a dishonorable mention is West Coaster on the Santa Monica Pier. I've gotten rides on both Desperado and the Big Apple coaster and neither came anywhere near to how bad I got rattled by WC. Maybe I just got lucky rides on the casino coasters or really unlucky whenever I've ridden WC.
Rainier Rush did find a new home on the french fair circuit if I'm not mistaken. At least, a Top Fun coaster of that type showed up there after Rainier was removed.
Some of my roughest uk steel coasters; Colossus @ Thorpe Park. An Intamin 10 inversion coaster that is a good ride but has really bad trains and crushing otsr's. Infusion @ Blackpool Pleasure Beach, a relocated SLC that ran slightly smoother when it was Traumatizer at Southport Pleasureland. The Pepsi Loop @ Rhyl's Ocean Beach amusement park. A brutal Pinfari ZL42 that gave me a headache that made me ill.
Kentucky Kingdom is my home park. I remember T3 being closed almost every visit as a kid. My husband loves inversions but will not go anywhere near T3. I remember Vortex left bruises on him when he rode and he was so dizzy we had to leave.
The same way you can get a 1-off rough ride, it can be the other way around too. I rode green lantern at great adventure once and it felt like the smoothest b&m ever, but usually it is rough as all hell
for me, Boomerang and Ednor in front at La Ronde are usual suspects for roughness, but the big surprise was Flight of Fear at King's Island. Fun coaster, but oh my god did it shake me around, I was not expecting that! and if you think I'm just nitpicking and being petty, just remember: I enjoy riding Vekoma SLCs and Monstre at La Ronde is the single coaster I've ridden the most often ever AND I CAN ENJOY IT. I know what roughness is, and Flight of Fear is shockingly rough, like a back row ride on Ednor is smoother than a back row ride on Flight of Fear
Viper TOGO at Six Flags Great Adventure was rough. I remember doing the circle of doom at Great Adventure back in the day… Viper, Scream Machine and Rolling Thunder you needed a back adjustment after that for sure.
Oh man viper was probably the worst coaster I've ever ridden with how rough it was. Scream machine wasn't too bad and rolling thunder I loved as a kid.
Rougaru-2019. The second half is nothing but headbanging. My brother and I could not find a comfortable spot on the train that headbanging didn't happen.
I rode the Wild Thing at Wild Waves, and I thought it was rough because my head does not clear the shoulder restraints, so I would get some headbanging on the turns. and have a headache after every ride.
Muskegon Michigan resident who visits Cedar Point multiple times a year here. You must’ve gotten a terrible ride on Corkscrew at MA because it’s MILES smoother than Corkscrew at Cedar Point normally.
I gotta agree with the Kumba mention I rode Kumba earlier in September and after about 3 rides I had a headache for the rest of that day but other than that Kumba is a really great ride.
I think a lot of people get headaches from sustained positive gs as that can do it for me. I have gotten used to it a bit more but notice it on rerides just because it is so intense start to finish. I305 can do the same to me
@@andrewwarthen5209 Yes. Kumba’s so intense with her gs that she can give one a headache, but weirdly the good type of headache. One that’s over in five minutes, and then you might just tackle her again. But three rides can and WILL do you in for the day. I can agree with that.
when i first road Viper at Six Flags Magic Mountain it was a great ride. that was in the early 1990's the last time i rode it was around mid to late 2000's it slammed you around pretty good. it had an over the shoulder restraint system
Hydra was running decently smooth at the start of this season, but the rattle got worse as the season progressed. I got a front row night ride last night during Haunt and it was pretty smooth though
I know you called out Kong at SFDK along with others, but man, I just happened to try it again the other day and I can't imagine any steel coaster experience being more miserable than that. And bonus, it still has the old restraints
Riddler’s Revenge (formerly Mind Eraser) at SFNE used to be a real headbanger. A headache was a guarantee. I’ve not ridden it since then but it got new restraints that make it rideable.
I haven't been on many rollercoasters, but Matterhorn Bobsleds is probably the most roughest coaster I have ever got on. Any of the pain you get from this ride goes on to your back and it hurts a lot after riding. Do not try riding in row 6, your back will ache afterwards.
When it comes to rough rides, I believe Great American Scream Machine comes to mind. The only ride I got on GASM was on my 12th birthday in 2010. It beat me up quite a bit, but I enjoyed it, and thought it still had a couple years left to go. But alas, a couple weeks later, it closed forever, and was demolished, only to make way for another rough ride, a relocated B&M Stand-up, themed to a DC Superhero in Commemoration of a film that failed miserably. Six Flags should've gotten a B&M Wing instead, and maybe given Scream Machine the Alton Towers Corkscrew treatment. Oh well. Flight Deck at Canada's Wonderland is another rough-as-hell coaster I've ridden, although this was recently, back in September 2022. It was my first time riding a Vekoma SLC and I truly expected the worst. It indeed was as bad as everyone said it was, and I'm glad I didn't bother to go on Time Warp next. Flight Deck was bad I imagine T3 might be even worse. Another rough Vekoma I've ridden months prior was Goudurix at Parc Asterix. The ride wasn't as rough as I thought it was, but it was still pretty rough. I thought it was ok. I just braced myself for those terrible transitions, especially on that Butterfly inversion. As for any other Vekoma coasters I've ridden, I'd say the same for Superman-ege at La Ronde. And I rode that ride in August 2019, just a couple days before it closed forever. And those are just the steel coasters. As for the roughest wooden coasters, I'd have to go with Mighty Canadian Minebuster at Canada's Wonderland, Le Monstre at La Ronde, and perhaps El Toro back in July, just a month before it had an accident again.
My roughest coaster is at Park Astérix, but it's not the infamous Goudurix... That's a Mack bobsleigh called Trace du Hourra, which destroys your back from start to finish. The train absolutely slams into every brake run, and the constant vibration makes the ride unbearable if you sit in any back seat, despite the coaster being fun .
Shockwave at KD. That thing was torture. The worst was also when it broke down on the chain lift and we were stuck there for 30 minutes in the sun. It was 100 degrees that day. So glad that it got replaced with a Discovery. So much more fun
Michigans adventure’s corkscrew was almost glass smooth in 2021 when I rode but vortex in the same year of 2018 did give me a borderline concussion. I came of struggling to walk straight.
During my time last summer of bad back riding of coasters, I visited Kentucky Kingdom and I really didn't think T3 ran bad. It wasn't great and it had horrible transitions (my only non-family SLC I've ridden). It's possible I was dreading its roughness and it didn't end up being as bad as I thought it would be.
@@AirtimeThrills right? Ive ridden it at least 2x a year (kks my home park) and it just doesn't feel like it's gotten any better. I would say 22 and 21 is even worse than 2020 despite all the repairs that have been made. Not only that but your lucky to even catch a ride on t3 nowdays because it's always shut down.
Lol. I didn’t ride roller coasters as an early teen so I missed out a lot. But Windjammer was my first time on a vertical loop coaster and I became addicted. I went on the ride at least a dozen times in one day. Maybe because I was a teenager I didn’t mind. I’m not a coaster enthusiast in the sense of making my way to American amusement parks (I’m Canadian), but I’ve been to my fair share in the PNW, California, and Florida. The worse, rockiest, migraine-inducing ride, to me, will always be Universals Rip Ride Rockit. Bashing my head from plastic to plastic even when it’s going straight, I’ve been on it twice in two different years and I’ll never go back.
Oh and I rode ninja at magic mountain a couple years ago and it beat me up horribly, which is surprising considering how tame it is. It just felt really jerky and I want to say it made my back and ribs hurt.
I remember riding Vortex (King's Island) a few times and I disliked it for its roughness. It was before I knew much about roller coasters, and I remember feeling happy when they announced its removal... I very much regret that now
Diamondback at KI has a pretty severe rattle in the back row. Especially on the green train. I refuse to ride rougaru at CP though. Every time I've been talked into riding because I brought a friend, I get off with a migraine.
Speaking of your wonder woman review I just rode jersey devil this year and it was rough as well. I wonder if it's a thing for the single rails and wonder if we'll never see a t Rex because of it.
Some that come to mind for me: - Klondike Gold Rusher (Wild Waves): Zamperla Wild Mouse with really cramped cars and just a really rough ride. Was SBNO for several years but seems to be operating again. - Matterhorn Bobsleds (Disneyland): Even after being fully retracked a few years ago this one is still pretty rough. I'm pretty sure it's always been rough, and always will be. - Jet Star 2 (Lagoon): It's been a while since I've been on this one, but recall it was pretty bumpy last time I was on it.
Shockwave and Mantis gave me the most pain I've ever suffered on a ride. Stand-up coasters are downright evil and just suck outright. The Bat and Magnum XL-200 suffer from very uncomfortable trains, hopefully they get addressed soon. I always thought Vortex was smooth the three times I rode it.
You just made me happy I never got on rainier rush - I feel like the one time I was going to get on, it was a busy period, mandated two riders and wouldn't match you. I wasn't in the mood finding a stranger to ride with me, and passed to go on classic coaster again.
I know you love Viper at MM, but I rode it again the other day and damn, it's rough. X2 has also given me some rides that were so unpleasant I couldn't enjoy anything other than the drop. The cars can rotate so jankily (word?) sometimes, I'll get off and my calves will feel bruised.
I would have to say that Vortex @ Carowinds is my least favorite. I remember being excited, but as soon as I stepped on the ride and pulled down the harness I was already disliking it. My 10 yr old self was on my tippy toes trying to “stand up”. We go up, go down, shaky but bearable. But then, that corkscrew… it pains me to mention it. The ride was playing pinball with my head, and it was the first time I experienced head-banging. But after the ride made it worse. Sitting on those brakes for what seemed like ever. It was drizzly, and cold. I’m on my tippy toes, shivering, wet, and my head hurting. That was the worst roller coaster I’ve ever been on.
Ninja (which is now Blue Hawk) at SFOG was absolutely horrific. Had to leave the park and go back home as a kid after riding it cause I had such a bad headache.
I had a ruff ride on Montu at bushes gardens Tampa, it was my fist time on it and it was my last ride of the day, as I already ridden all the other ones. This was probably 2021.
I don't have many credits so I gotta say the roughest ride I've been on is the Steamin Demon at Six Flags Great Escape. That ride is really rough and has given me a headache on multiple occasions
Sheikra is glossy smooth (or has been 4 month ago when I rode it about 11 times). After 7 years of very intensive coaster riding (my count is somewhere around 600) I know that often it is not the coaster to blame, it´s the own body ;) If you are riding for several days or even if you just had not a good sleep, one and the same coaster can feel glossy smooth or headache rattling.

Yeah… it’s between that and the racers for roughest at the park now that vortex is gone and the beast was redone. (My home park)
And just think, it was even worse with OTSRs.
When it first opened, it seemed fine. But, when I rode it a few years later, it felt like I went 10 rounds with Mike Tyson. Never rode it since.
I rode Flight of Fear for the first time this year, and I didn't find it that rough at all really. I did sit in in the front though mostly.

I got super confused when I missed the “one off” intro and saw a bunch of B&Ms. The real list had just as many arrows as I expected, no disrespect 😂
Corkscrew at Cedar Point would probably be on my list, but it was one of a couple coasters I didn't get to ride there (it wasn't open at all)
My home park has some rough coasters but nothing can compare to the horrendous ride I got on Gemini in 2022, that is actually the roughest piece of trash and I’ve ridden rides like hades 360 and loved it but Gemini is one of the only coasters I can’t stand for roughness.
I just missed Dragon, too bad
Funnily enough I was just watching your roughest wooden coasters video, and then this comes out. Perfect timing.
Great video! Every time I get off of Banshee, I have a headache. The coaster is an awesome invert with a great layout, crazy pacing, and some good forces. Put it tracks oddly. Goes to show that even steel coasters can get rattles or vibrations.
Yeah I never had a problem with Banshee but seems like you feel the shakiness at some points
Came down to train for me. Teal was the worst, purple was hit and miss, blue ran the best. Feel like all the B&Ms at Kings Island have some sort of rattle though outside Orion
@@andrewwarthen5209 yeah I agree blue tracks the best. Still I slight shuffle, but not too bad.
Not in America, but Rolling X Train in Everland in S.Korea (the same park as T express).
It’s an old Arrow model, build by Vekoma in ‘88 and … I can’t remember a ride where I got off with more hatred for an experience.
Drop
Loop
Loop
Turn
Double corkscrew
Helix
Finish.
I haven't ridden Matterhorn in about 4 years, I dont remember it being that rough, maybe a little jerky
@@AirtimeThrills There's this one really bad spot on the tomorrowland side that feels like a car crash
Yikes...I dont recall a rattle at all on Fahrenheit
Vekoma hang and bangs(Kiddy Hawk and Flying Ace Arial Chase) both tracked really rough for me. Thankfully the restraints on the one at Kings Island were further apart so that at least eliminated head banging.
Yeah the transitions make you slam your head into the restraints. I last rode Bat at Lagoon (in the front mind you) and every turn was pain
Talking about arrow so much has me curious about the history of rollercoaster manufacturers. Great video!
Demon at CGA is an unironic Nightmare
What cracks me up, I MARATHONED Flashback, and had no issues.
Ok two things:
One, the first time I rode Magnum I absolutely hated it. After getting a few more rides, I actually kinda enjoy it (despite the jank transitions)
Two, 11:35 was freaking hilarious lmao.
I’ve not been on many coasters (30 to be exact) and luckily, not one of them was rough (by that, I meant I disliked the ride.)
the 2 rides I would probably say are rough are scorpion at Busch gardens as it was prity shaky, but I still enjoyed it.
Nice video as always, just as entertaining as the rest of your videos!
I'll defend Goudurix. I only rode it in 2019 and found it smooth. Others who rode it that year also noted it was riding better. Apparently they did something to make it ride better.
Wild Thing at Wild Waves Enchanted Village. Old Arrow Loop and Corkscrew, the ride being so short they do two cycles unless you opt out of ride #2.
For me it’s the old Hopkins looper at Adventureland. That thing was so rough
“It doesn’t make my top 200 and I don’t even have 200 coasters”
Sophie with the sick burns🔥
The Ninja in St. Louis. Also the Manhattan express in Vegas. Ouch
Sucks I missed Viper and had to ride its stupid wooden replacement
@@AirtimeThrills HOW DARE YOU TALK ABOYT EL TORO LIKE THAT
Rougaru-2019.
I gotta agree with the Kumba mention
I rode Kumba earlier in September and after about 3 rides I had a headache for the rest of that day but other than that Kumba is a really great ride.
"T3 SUCKS!!!!"
-random roller coaster rider
I know you called out Kong at SFDK along with others, but man, I just happened to try it again the other day and I can't imagine any steel coaster experience being more miserable than that. And bonus, it still has the old restraints
Kong is definitely in the pantheon of BAD SLCs
@@AirtimeThrills I've only ridden one and it was Kong, and it was terrible!
Been waiting for this one!
Loving the new intro!
I want to ride Flight Deck again but in the back. I rode it in the front and I feel like I didnt get the full brunt of its brutality
Sophie roasting Anaconda gave me a real good chuckle
I agree with my 2022 ride on Kumba. I was so confused lol. Literally said, "but why?" Lolol
They may be making tweaks year to year, but 2020 it was so rickety
I very much regret that now
Love watching your videos Chris!
Some that come to mind for me:
- Klondike Gold Rusher (Wild Waves): Zamperla Wild Mouse with really cramped cars and just a really rough ride.
I rode Jet Star 2 a couple of months ago and it wasn’t bumpy but dang does that thing whip you through turns, it was crazy
I had that exact same Deja Vu shirt. Love they way you rocked it at its relocation; with a pose and zoom to boot.
You just made me happy I never got on rainier rush - I feel like the one time I was going to get on, it was a busy period, mandated two riders and wouldn't match you. I wasn't in the mood finding a stranger to ride with me, and passed to go on classic coaster again.
They definitely did you a favor there
I know you love Viper at MM, but I rode it again the other day and damn, it's rough.
The SLC called twisted typhoon in wild adventures Georgia is the roughest coaster I’ve ever been I literally hit my head seven times on the safety collar.
That comment about T3 as the train rode by is HILARIOUS!
Anaconda and Rolling Thunder, Sophie is really getting tourtured
