  • @cybercrasherstv

The best part of hurler was how mysterious it got over the years. It was a discovery the first time I rode it. There was also this worn down building in the middle. It looked like something you could find in an abandoned highway in the middle of the desert. I used to imagine what on earth was in that building in the middle. Were some weirdos making an evil mind control ray to take over? Or did it hide something spoopy?
And that's the only thing I missed about that eh coaster. The abandoned shed in the middle of the thing. Twisted Timbers is just obviously better than that piece of trash. But if I did have one wish, I would make a coaster in the back of an amusement park that had no ads, and looks creepy and abandoned. That is such an underrated aesthetic

My favorite defunct coasters was probably Cannonball Run. It was a small CCI woodie at a water park of all places, but it was close to where I lived and a local icon, at least for me. Seeing the park now without it just makes it feel empty.
Worst one is definitely Primeval Whirl. Mostly for just being... completely stupid. It was a fairground style wild mouse at a Disney park. A _DISNEY_ park. The chain that's supposed to have extensive theming had a fairground wild mouse. And not even a very good one. They finally announced they were taking it out recently, and I'm happy to see it go.

Something that probably should be known about Psyclone, it was built to be a smoother version of the Georgia Cyclone. And the ride apparently operated well for the first couple of years it was there. But then it suffered structural damage in the 1994 Northridge Earthquake, and when they repaired it they decided to add a whole bunch of trim brakes that, coupled with the heavy trains, made the ride slow to a crawl. And those heavy trains actually made the wear and tear even worse.
Also, Disaster Transport was originally an outdoor bobsled called Avalanche Run, but it would often close because breezes would blow sand onto the track. It was intended to solve this by enclosing it in a building and giving it theming similar to Star Tours, but the building was poorly maintained and over the years the special effects broke down with Cedar Point never bothering to update them. So the appeal of the ride dimmed quite fast, largely existing as an indoor attraction.

Unfortunately, I never got to go there. Being from the southwest Columbus area, when I was a kid (80s) there were three large parks to choose from in Ohio. It’s about a 3-hour drive to Cedar Point, an hour and a half or less to Kings Island, and probably around three hours to Geauga Lake.
I remember thinking Geauga Lake was for poor kids.
Whenever my family went to a park, we generally went to Kings Island. But we went to Cedar Point at least once, when they only had six coasters. Which was most in the world at the time, I think. And the best one was Corkscrew, with Gemini right behind it. (Loops counted a lot more then than they do now.)
I think my second time was 1989, when Magnum was new. I remember waiting about three hours to ride that. So much nicer to just walk right onto it now. And of course no one bothers walking right on to Corkscrew now because everyone knows it sucks. But those loops over the midway... So perfect.
The first time I went to Kings Island, all they had was the Racer, Screamin’ Demon, and Scooby Doo.
I also remember going to a smaller park in Middletown called Americana. I think it was more commonly known as Lesourdsville Lake or something. I think they had two coasters. I think it’s camping world now or something. Would be cool if that park was still there.

As you’ve probably heard Fantasy Island could potentially come back, and the group intending on taking control said that they want to reopen Silver Comet with a new train since it’s still standing on the property. Growing up closer to Darien Lake, I’ve always enjoyed Silver Comet more than Predator and thought the park should buy Silver Comet to replace Predator. With Six Flags taking over that’s not happening, but it’s almost for the better that it stays where it is cause I feel like it would get pretty rough after being assembled a second time.
Hopefully this group succeeds in bringing Fantasy Island back and holds a VIP event similar to Indiana Beach, although they have a lot to do. Only ride other than Silver Comet that stayed was the gondola wheel, so they need to go out and buy a bunch of new rides. Park also needs cleaning since several gangs have made it on the property.

Growing up with Astroworld as my home park, the vast majority of my personal list would be from there. Easily the two worst defunct coaster I have ridden would be a virtual tie between The Rattler and Texas Giant. Man, were they painful! Those 2 rides alone created a boom for chiropractors in San Antonio and DFW Metroplex. The defunct ride that I hold near and dear to my heart is the Texas Cyclone. I didn’t get to ride it over it’s last 12-13 years of life. So, I can’t say how rough it got towards the end, but in the 80’s and early 90’s it was hands down my favorite coaster. I loved the part of the ride with all the crossovers and seeing a POV for Steel Vengeance in 2018 with how much of the ride was in the structure, I HAD to ride it. So, me and my wife made the completely rational decision to drive from Austin to Cedar Point to ride it and we’ve been enthusiasts ever since!

I got to ride Drachen Fire at Busch Gardens Williamsburg few times in the mid 90s before it was taken out. At the time I remember loving it despite being a rough ride - I believe it was the most extreme ride at the park at that time. I haven't been able to go back; I know they have upped their coaster game significantly since then.

Rolling Thunder was the first wood coaster I fell in love with. It plus El Toro made that the spot in the park I never wanted to leave. It’s absence really made me sad on my last visit.
The Great American Scream machine is one I remember being lots of fun just a few years before it closed. It certainly never beat me up like that Green Lantern one did, which to this day hurt so badly I will never ride a stand up again.
As for the Big Bad Wolf, I loved that drop as a kid. It’s always sad saying goodbye to rides you grew up on.

The only defunct coaster I've ridden is one I found out about today. Cheetah at Wild Adventures, built in 2001 by CCI. When the park reopened in 2020, they kept Cheetah closed because they couldn't maintain proper physical distancing, probably due to most of the queue being enclosed by tall wooden fences. In January 2021, they announced its closure stating that something new and excited is coming in the following years. Hopefully this means they'll call in RMC to remake this coaster into a hybrid! Calling in GCI to give it their new hybrid track or a normal retrack is possible too, but given that they already invested in a retrack in 2010, that's probably not going to happen. They could tear it down and replace it with something else, but an RMC conversion would make more sense and be cheaper, and this is Herschend, not Six Flags, so this is likely going to happen! I'm glad I got to ride this coaster before it closed despite being so rough. I don't know how a CCI only 19 years old with a retrack in 2010 owned by Herschend could be so rough, but it was. Also, I hope they don't just retrack it because the layout isn't anything special. A 100 ft drop, only 2 small airtime hills, and the rest of this short ride is just banked turns. I'm excited to see what will happen with this!

Along the lines of Colossus, I wonder if Magic Mountain will ever replace Viper or Goldrusher to create an updated version of them.
I'd actually love to see a new Viper that is smooth with updated elements. Or maybe even use the space to put in an RMC single rail 👀
Goldrusher would be amazing land to put in something like Maverick low to the ground, but I honestly love it's charm - and it's a ride guaranteed to not have a long line.

Even though I live (and grew up) about an hour from Kings Island, I only rode son of beast once. It was when the loop was still there. Even though I knew it had a reputation for being painful, I had a good ride, although there was no leg room. And even though there was nothing particularly great about it, I understand why you place such a high value on it. I mean, just seeing it from the freeway was a thrill. And all those years it sat there SBNO. Too bad there’s not an RMC (Iron Offspring? Puberty? Wet Dream?) sitting there now.
I went to magic mountain in 1998, and I don’t remember even seeing flashback (or Psyclone).
I remember going to Kings Island the year before Vortex was built. Near that walkway between Coney Mall and Rivertown they had a big board or something with a color drawing of what would be built there before the next season. It was insane to imagine a coaster with six loops. At the time I think there was one inversion in the park, on the screamin demon, if it was even still there.

Solid list (love that Scandia Screamer made it), but there are some that predate or perhaps were outside your personal coastering that would have been on this list. Here's an earlier version/addendum based on my experiences:
    The good:
    1. Avalanche (incredible little wooden coaster that easily destroyed anything at Mt. Olympus)
    2. Steel Phantom (loved it, though many place it on the bad list)
    3. Soap Box Racers (favorite coaster as a child, was gutted when I realized it was gone)
    4. Hypersonic XLC (very few comparable launches, the rest was rubbish but worth it for the launch)
    5. Dania Beach Hurricane (sleeper hit that most people never noticed- like Viper at SFGAm)
    6. Ozark Wildcat (one of the weaker GCI's but really none of them are particularly bad from this era)
    7. Texas Giant (faded quickly after opening, but unlike Mean Streak it was a world class coaster during the early years)
    8. Thriller (or the bad list as Zonga - the g-force king)
    9. Batman and Robin: The Chiller (that middle period after the OTSR's but before the zero-g rolls were removed made this a pretty great ride)
    The bad:
    1. Hercules (the worst coaster I've ever ridden. epic drop that jackhammered and slammed so hard it should be illegal, followed by the most boring/shuffling/crappy layout this side of Rattler's helix - would certainly be an awesome RMC conversion).
    2. Drachen Fire (was mesmerized by this thing as a young enthusiast, turned out to be hot garbage)
    3. Rattler (Son of Beast before Son of Beast was Son of Beast)
    4. Megazeph (never rode, but never heard anything good about it either)
    5. Gwazi (had a decent layout and very unique- but nothing from that era of GCI ended up lasting)
    6. Georgia Cyclone (apparently this was "good" at some point but I never rode it in that condition)
    7. Cyclone (SFNE) (great/unique layout but simply too rough to deal with)
