I was in the hospital and thought I was gonna die. I was there for over a month, but they were wrong. If I had it my way, I would've died then and my friends would've sang this song as what was left of me was spread wherever they could find a spot. Instead I linger. Monkey wash, donkey rinse. Why didn't I die? There's no reason for me to stay. I provide no value to others besides convenience. I help people get things off the high shelf, that's all. There is no reason for me to stay here. I always wondered what inspired this song for years. I always thought it was about degeneracy and general decline in a cultural sense, but I never understood the metaphor of monkey wash donkey rinse.
Only Lindley has ever given that explanation for the tune, based (supposedly) on what WZ told him over the phone about it when inviting him to play on it. Find it hard to believe. WZ may have been either pulling his leg (no pun intended) or on some drug at the time .. I have never been able to find any evidence or even other mention of the supposed Marrakesh "act" online, and would be stunned they would allow something like that in a public square, even there. With all the cam phones out there, surely someone would have caught it and posted it online somewhere ..
