  • I got an interesting question by a student: "If we have services like Wix etc. - do we still need web developers and is it still a good idea to learn web development?". A very interesting question! Here's why we still need "real" web developers and why services like Wix and Squarespace are great but not the right tool for everything!

    • @balduran
      @balduran 4 роки тому +14

@@AnkurKumar-ur1cj Backend is not dying and probably never will. You will always need or want server side code. Your server running the code can of course be a server cluster (cloud). But it is still code that can not or should not run on the client side. For example: you don't want the clients to access your database directly. This would be a catastrophic security risk. So every time someone needs database access, that request gets processed by some server before it gets send to the database (or rejected).
And server less basically means, that your backend can spread its tasks to multiple servers. Or that there are multiple instances of your backend are running on multiple servers at the same time.

And even if your are going serverless you still need front end developers. Build a f*cking static website with wix is not like building a real front end application. I insist on the word “application”. A front end app need to handle authentication, caching, dealing with rest or graphql api, handle state management and have some business logic. A website builder like wix cannot do that. And even if such tool exist it will not be specific to your use case.

    • @dayvie9517

@@AnkurKumar-ur1cj You cannot build a webapplication without backend. Everything in a client/frontend-application is basically an unsafe state which can be manipulated. Therefore business logic has to be always implemented on the server side. Serverless doesn't mean without backend. It means with a data center backend. It's a useless buzzword.

    • @codezero6023
      @codezero6023 4 роки тому

It probably depends on your application. I have looked at Gatsby with Netlify and the concept is pretty cool as a server less application. In an enterprise, you still have a lot of legacy infrastructure. There is more of an opportunity for serverless in start ups and freelance contracts

    My take on this topic:
Use wix and squarespace to build websites that will not be the core of your business(like Hotel and restaurant services)
Use a developer to build interactive web applications that are a business by itself
    Why?
Because with wix you can you use only prebuilt features so you can't build anything innovative. When one day tools like wix will let us built social media networks then everyone and there grandmother will build one but they will all be equal because you can only use the tools that wix made. And then if you have web developer team you can built new features, new ideas that will let you defeat your wixxy competion by far.

    • @cud0s
      @cud0s 4 роки тому +1

On the other hand since these tools started to allow custom code in their pages you can add your features that are not prebuilt in them. So you can build and host a site easily and then focus on your innovative features. Of course the performance is worse on them and you have limitations on your “custom code”

    Don't forget Max:
    1. The client don't own the code, if they stop paying you lose the site.
    2. Wix in the end is in control of your data they tell so on terms and agreements, they might even use your page to marketing proposes and selling the info to SEO.
    3. They tend to be slower and always be slower than cutting edge technologies. Example, static site with Gatsby.
    4. They charge few Dollars a month but when you add up the expenses a year might be cheaper to build something on your own.
But yeah in the end is just like you said depend on the business model of the person who needs the page.

There is a huge difference between a "Website" and a "Web App".
A Website is like driving an already made car. So yes, use Wix/SS to give you a car, as your primary need is to drive a car and not build one.
A Web App is like designing, engineering and building a car from ground up for specific use case and need.
Two totally different markets which actually complement each other.

I'm a software developer. I've worked for companies that won awwwards, still I've used Wix for my dad's website. No shame in admiting. Reasons: 1) he was constantly changing his mind, even after agreeing with the prototypes. 2) I didn't had enough time. 3) I've spent 70% of the time on taking pictures / photoshopping his products. 4) it's easy and fast to change stuff in the future.

I understand and agree completely with this video, but I felt like comparing apples to oranges sometimes.. Of course a landing page or a simple e-commerce site doesn't compare to such big projects as Udemy, Facebook, UA-cam, etc. But in my opinion that's also not what Wix proposes nor is the problem it fixes. How many beginner or intermediate Web Designers/Developers have the ability to come up with such big projects that Wix doesn't fix (how many can build a Facebook?)? There are a lot of beginner/intermediate Web Devs that build simple websites and e-commerce shops that indeed get impacted by the likes of Wix and can't argue 100% against a client who claims "why shouldn't I use Wix instead of hiring you?" You can say that even Wix may require custom things and maintenance that might require a web developer or that it's our own problem to get super experience and be able to argue that we can build an UA-cam-like project and that it is not possible with Wix, but how many small clients need or ask for it? I hope you guys don't get me wrong or this was too confusing. Cheers!

@@deepaksinghbisht739 Yea, it was just a side note though, Max answered the question of the video title perfectly (Why we still need Web Devs even with the likes of wix), so yes, we do need Web Devs because Wix doesn't solve all the problems (like the big projects such as UA-cam or Facebook), but Wix does solve (or facilitate) many of the small projects to medium sized e-commerces, so junior-intermediate devs, who by the way is the vast majority of the public who watches UA-cam tutorials, will get impacted one way or another. Those big projects are also very rarely built single handedly, so that's why I think the message can be a bit misleading as well, the average Joe who is watching this (including me) will always have Wix as a "concern". There are other important points though. I think Wix and other builders need to be taken as tools any web dev can use, rather than think of them as threats. And on the other hand, builders like these have always existed since the late 90's, and Web Devs have never been more requested as today :) so I think we're good!

As someone who has several websites on services like wix and weebly, my instant answer to this question is YES! Your WYSIWYG website you built using these builders will never compete with a finely tuned site built by a proper web developer. It's like ... racing a Tesla against a schoolie that was frankinstined together from 1000 different vehicles and has hundreds and hundreds of parts weighing it down that it doesn't even use in any form of regular operation. You've lost by the time the lights turn green. I cannot stress enough that if you can't build a website with quality SEO in the modern era then you might as well open a clothing store with no sign on the building, no windows at all, and you know what - just take out the doors to, you won't be needing those. What's the point of having a website at all if people can't find you organically on the web? Feel free to check out my weebly page www.mossaway.ca and test it out on www.gtmetrix.com and I think you'll see there's plenty that needs work. Defer parsing of JS - I can't do shit about that. It was Weebly's job but they're too lazy. Leverage browser caching - I'd totally do that but Weebly doesn't think it's important. Serve resources from a constant URL - there are tools that will help fix this but apparently Weebly doesn't want to put in the effort. Either it's ridiculous how much effort I need to put in to, say, resize an image to fit where I've put it, or it's something you can't even access like the expires headers or js/css that you can't minify because Weebly was too lazy to do it. It's infuriating. So for anyone wondering if this stuff is worth their time. YES YES YES YES YES. Yes. We clear? ;)

Hey Max, interesting take in this video. What is your opinion on over saturation in the market? Year on year a huge amount of new students are becoming 'Full Stack Developers' and whilst its true the majority of businesses operate online and the statistics suggest many students drop out before becoming professional, there is still a finite amount of web jobs available. The best business to be in is teaching web development cause you can profit regardless of this outcome but don't you think we'll see a peak in the next few years and wages will be driven down? Also, regarding self employed or freelance web developers, wix etc have consumed a significant market share because, regardless of the headache, many small business owners are willing to build and update their own website to save money, which they once would have paid in significant quantities to specialist freelance web designers. In closing, it might appear then, the only way to make a full time livable wage in web development is to join a medium to large corporate (building enterprise platforms) or maybe a start up, provided you already have experience/knowledge of a broad tech stack.

Web Dev here, I got hired by a client to build a website using Wix because he was used with using Wix and wanted to be able to edit text by himself later, add or change pictures for stuff. He wanted a website + store for a small restaurant. The catch is that he was very specific with what he wanted so in the end there was coding involved and there's no way you can reach the level of customization he needed without knowing web development. So in the end, he has a website which is exactly the way he wants feature - wise, and then he can also jump in at any time to do some content updates. WIX is ideal for people who want to start something off and want to save on money, but they will have to compromise on the final product. And that's awesome, not all small businesses can afford professional web dev services when starting up.

I have gave it a try, it works pretty well, but the css codes it generates are huge because all the UI elements are positioned absolutes, meaning elements are all hard coded. these are the three tools I used a lot recently, and I want to share with you !!!

Wix Vs development is like build your own home or renting apartment in building
in apartment you are not allowd to make extra rooms or basements or do any change on the building because its not yours
while in your own home you build and add any thing even swimming pool if you like :)

I've tried them all. Never deliver for me or present themselves in the way I want so I decided to learn to code. I had a head start as I had used the web and have done a fair amount of backend stuff. I like being fully creative so no, they don't suit me one bit. I tried getting a job as a web dev but gave up because I had to go back to driving to get money in (and with my background and skills that was just ridiculous!), now I do my own projects. I'm also handy with Photoshop (trained photographer) and currently working on video production. A lot of SME's create websites and then do nothing with them and don't touch them again, ever. Just tons of out of date material. They use Wix and Webflow, oh, and WP. And they have NO idea of SEO. Serious business looking for a good web presence and to be at the top of the search use Web Developers, helps if they're young, desperate and cheap though. I mean, you guys actually earn a lot less than you did 20 years ago, even 10 years ago. Thanks for the video. Someone mentioned AI in the comments, yes, in time AI will replace even web developers. Simply tell the machine what you want.

In my opinion learning the very basics of web development or just paying a freelancer a small price is even easier than using a website builder to build and optimize an SEO-friendly website with approriate size and speed in relation to the limited content. Surely some people neither have the time, nor the money and only need a website for a small purpose. The fastfood of the internet I guess. But I still don't understand why on almost every web development video I get annoying Wix ads... :(

there are many people out there who learns web dev to be a free lancer and earn some money by developing some simple websites like wix offer. Now it's over. & wix/square space etc are just the start. There are more coming which will offer more stuff. So it's Convenient for them to learn web dev in 2020. That's what I think.

  • @legadoproductions8472

Actually, I first started in this web dev path because my company’s e-commerce web site was dreadful and couldn’t be built with Wix or Wordpress, as it needed to be fully integrated with the company’s ERP system. Also, we sell customized products (plastic articles with printed images) and I didn’t find a built in service or third party service for customized products in Wix, Wordpress or even Shopify which fulfilled the company’s needs. So yeah, Web Development is not obsolete at all. If you account trends such as PWAs, microservices, machine learning, BI and the fact that Web apps development and Mobile apps development are closer than ever, I assure you, it is a really desired set of skills that is not going to become obsolete any time soon...

Nonetheless, many enterprise companies are moving their ERP's from the desktop application to Web, and knowledge in web development (and also security) is crucial. That's why you (we) need to keep our skills updated, to solve problems whatever the needs of the company.

He said haha..will do it with WIX in less than $500. I told him, you can't make things go working, with wix. and if you did somehow, you cannot scale up things, from there.

There is a problem here...More and more advanced easy to use drag and drop platforms are and will become available to generate almost any kind of application you can think of. The reality is whilst coders will always be needed, other then for really advanced stuff the fees/salaries will drop substantially and it will not be as lucrative. People and businesses will have more options hence unless they are building something very complex they can probably do it themselves or inexpensively hiring someone on fiverr to build it for them using one of these platforms.

The big question is. If you are a freelancer or a web development agency and 80% of your market are thretened by this platforms because the real thing is how many web apps are built in the year that works and can pay you lots of money??? Not so much really and that is where the real problem are. If being a developer comes down to just works for these big tech companies is not so cool anymore. But the full replacement isnt gonna be never to the 100% so you can still find customers to your business so it is a threat but not so much people are lazy to built his own website

These platforms are a starting point only. Once your site is launched, the real learning begins. Especially adding eCommerce. You're limited by what the platform can provide. It works until you find it doesn't. Each have limitations. Shopify just sells "add-on" options where you spend month after month for the same feature a web developer can provide. They appear to promote the "one-size fits all" idea. eCommerce has never been this way.

Sorry to pop your bubble. We can build youtube/udemy/facebook like using corvid
example dynamic page, database. without writing any code
    www.wix.com/corvid/reference/
but yes there is one thing ( performance )
if you are building a SAAS is not a good idea to build it with Wix
as you will hit some database or performance limitation
    Wix Front-end limitation are
you can't write or edit the HTML and Css as they offer Drag and Drop element
But those are limited and you cannot edit it with code
btw, you can also create your own element with or web component, if you like
as recenthly wix support web component.
anyway, you can do a lot more with Wix than Squarespace or anyother website building site
    thanks to Corvid(wix code)
    IMO the biggest downside are
    Speed
    you cannot connect with github
multiple dev can't work on it at the same time

We can easily implement the Like and Subscription mechanism.
