    Holy Shit, that Headset Installation with the Hammer and without grease hurt for days!!! 😭

    • @viggobeck7015
      @viggobeck7015 3 роки тому +2

      Just curious, (i've never assembled a headset from bare frame b4) what's the purpose of the grease in the cup-frame interface? usually you put grease to prevent seizing, (like in bb threads or freehub body) but it doesn't seem like you'd ever need to take off an interference fit headset cup.... insight?

    • @peglor
      @peglor 3 роки тому +2

      @@viggobeck7015 The layer of grease means less force for installing and removing, less chance of damage to the surface finish on the parts as they slide over each other and, especially on a trials bike where there are massive and repeated shock loadings to the head tube with no suspension to damp them out, slightly less chance of it creaking. Every trials bike I've ever owned will start to creak at the headset after a few weeks use if it's not doing it from new already despite this though. Every suspension fork I've ever used creaks at the steerer-crown/crown-stanchion interface if you load up the front wheel for pivots and similar too, so you can't win on this one.
      Interestingly Tartybikes recommends installing headset bearings dry in bikes such as the new Echo/GU models with tapered steerers where the headset cups and crown race are machined surfaces in the headtube and fork crown.

    • @viggobeck7015
      @viggobeck7015 3 роки тому +1

      @@peglor aaahhhh.... i see. makes sense. i've run into a couple creaks like that. that makes sense that it would be the cup, especially for nose pivots like you were saying.

    • @at5504
      @at5504 3 роки тому +1

      @@jeffhayes1855 it's much easier. But my MTB is a Salsa Bucksaw (a full suspension fat bike), so I imagine that makes it more difficult. Regardless, the geometry, extremely low seat, ultra grippy brakes, and short rear end just makes it a lot more fun to play with while it's stationary. I'm also old (for a trials beginner), so the lighter weight helps as well.

    • @Ali_Clarkson
      @Ali_Clarkson  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks :D this hose isn't rated for the extra pressures disc brakes put on them...magura rims brakes have a lot lower mechanical advantage and doesn't generate the same fluid pressure as a disc brake, this means magura rim brake hose is just a plastic tube...disc brake hose has a kevlar (I think) weave which stops the hose from expanding under high pressures...sadly you can't
      get clear tubing for a disc brake yet

    As a bike mechanic, I could recommend you to buy an el-cheapo headset press from Aliexpress for ~15-20 squids. It's a piece of threaded rod like the DIY jobs people make, but the most important part are the nicely machined bits of aluminium that will drive a variety of cup sizes in straight.

    Awesome bike build. I hope to get a used trials bike soon, I was looking at old Onza t birds on ebay, something I could pick up for around £50 as I have seen a few under that price about a month ago. I am 5'10 so what size should I get?

    • @Ali_Clarkson
      @Ali_Clarkson  3 роки тому +3

      You're the same height as me...if you have a history of bmx then the Onza could be worth a try...coming from MTB I find 20" bikes too small and weird, sadly it's extremely hard to find 26" bikes at the same prices :(

    Hi Ali, great build as always, However all you need now is a big glass fronted display case to put your new trials bicycle in and then just stare at it ???????.

    That is a very nice bike. Is it sad but I like the clear brake hose with luminous fluid, very 90’s rave. but my neat brain says why did you not do it on the front!

    • @Ali_Clarkson
      @Ali_Clarkson  3 роки тому

      this hose isn't rated for the extra pressures disc brakes put on them...magura rims brakes have a lot lower mechanical advantage and doesn't generate the same fluid pressure as a disc brake, this means magura rim brake hose is just a plastic tube...disc brake hose has a kevlar (I think) weave which stops the hose from expanding under high pressures...sadly you can't
      get clear tubing for a disc brake yet

    Can you explain caged vs standard pinned MTB pedals and why you often see caged in competition trials?

    • @Ali_Clarkson
      @Ali_Clarkson  3 роки тому +1

      I'm not 100% sure why comp riders choose caged pedals...it might simply be that they're lighter but there could be other advantages I don't know about

    Been riding a Cannibal for close to 8 years now, chiefly due to there being absolutely nothing on the market to replace it with. Fantastic geometry. Everybody who rides my bike likes it, I think the current generation don't know how good a sensible bb hight can be.

    I wouldn't worry too much about the rear tyre, I run Vee tyres on the MTB with rimpact and didn't get the usual bead noises either. They're holding air perfectly :)

      That doesn’t put anywhere near enough torque to tighten them sadly
