- A memorable moment from the 55th Golden Globe Awards, aired on Sunday, January 18, 1998. Laura San Giacomo and Michael J. Fox present the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Drama. Nominated were Gillian Anderson ("The X-Files"), Kim Delaney ("NYPD Blue"), Roma Downey ("Touched by an Angel"), and Julianna Margulies ("ER"). Following the announcement that Christine Lahti had won the award for her work on "Chicago Hope," the actress was nowhere to be found--as she was in the bathroom! Entertaining efforts to stall the program ensued.

Only Robin Williams with no preparation and no hesitation can jump on stage during a major awards show and improv. The man was a gifted comedian.

If this had happened today the orchestra would have played her off before she got to the stage. I miss the days when people were allowed to get through their thank yous without having to rush. This is an unfortunate sad reminder of what we lost in Robin Williams. I still can't wrap my mind around the concept that this man who gave me so much laughter was in that much emotional pain. RIP Robin.

Even though this is still hilarious. It does make me a little sad to know Robin Williams is no longer with us.
It’s been 10 years since we lost Robin Williams and I still miss him. He left a big hole in Hollywood celebrity culture that probably won’t ever be filled by another. Awards shows have suffered by not having someone like him there. A wildcard at any event, on our screens, and in our hearts forever.
At least Christine Lahti had a good sense of humor about the whole thing. People still have to go to the bathroom it can't be helped

This is my favorite awards show moment ever. Christine’s improv with the napkin is hilarious! Good for her for laughing it off.

Giacomo was delightfully beutiful in these times and this award truly means something for these people but the true award for an actor is what Robin Williams doing in this part. It doesn't matter if it is an improv or planned. Obviously not prepared or rehearsed and it is a hard thing to get those timings in a live one shot show and reactions, even with a truly tiring rehearsals and Robin Williams gets the Best part of being an actor just because he was capable of doing it juust right 👌

Christine is now in her 70s, Robin Williams has passed, Michael J. Fox is almost an invalid and most of those other actresses have been forgotten.
I also note that The West Wing still wasn't even a pitch idea.

I understand the sentiment but of the female actresses, one of them recently won several Emmys for The Good Wife in a row, the other is a big deal in New York and London on the stage, winning many awards and nominated for several for her work on The Crown. Kim Delaney has gone from smash Hit TV show to smash hit TV show, currently in Chicago Fire, a top ten show. Roma Downey, arguably the one working the least did partially retire to be with her family but is now active once again in her native Ireland and United Kingdom with several TV shows running at once. Michael J fox has tried very hard to explain to people he is not in fact an invalid. He's written several books on the subject and still appears regularly on TV when he's not experiencing a flare up.

Back when GG was fun to watch without really trying. Nowadays they need to hire host just to save their asses.

She knew her category was coming up next.. a little time management.. she had to rail that last bit of yayo before her speech.
Actually, they reshuffled the categories at the last minute which is why she thought she had time. Now Renee Zellweger repeating this bathroom bit in a later year when she won for Nurse Betty is another story...
