Trivia: Jane asked the Academy president they could close caption the ceremony(He said no) it's why Jane used sign language. so The Academy not just has a history of being cruel to performers of color, but also those with disabilites. Bravo Jane you're not just awesome you're a hero

There's so much wrong with hollywood. The people are overlooked for their crimes (sexual assault, rape, racism and homophobia only to name a few) and congratulated on such arbitrary and simple things. They think of it as a sign that they can continue with what they doing, and they can "apologise" when it gets bad because their reputation as a celebrity can't be lost no matter how many people speak against them. It's toxic, shameful and absolutely horrific.
Jane Fonda is one of the rare unproblematic, talented queens of hollywood. Everything from her acting career to here legendary workout videos to her activism for climate change is out of genuine concern and care and pure talent. She uses her fame and publicity for something good, and that should be recognised and awarded, since it's sadly such a rarity. 🧡

Despite the fact that many Vietnam veterans continue to hate Ms. Fonda for the whole infamous "Hanoi Jane" incident, there can be no doubt that she gave a great performance in 'Coming Home', easily the best of the five that were nominated. So based on acting alone (which, after all, is what the Oscars are about), she fully deserved the award.
Watching the clips of the nominations and winners for the Oscars throughout the decade of the 1970's reminds me of how many great films were made back then...the days of when characters and stories meant more than action and special effects. That fact still continued somewhat into the 1980's, but after the '80's expired, it's never been quite the same.

It's a ball of shit that's mixed with lies and myths that people continue to push around the Internet, despite the fact there's no proof. I am grateful that people today don't continue to judge me for idiotic things I did or said when i was young, or missteps I made...but for some reason, Fonda really has endured more than her fair share of shit heaped upon her. Only those who are self-blinded and self-righteous still refuse to 'forgive', yet they are the ones that probably need more forgiveness. Grow up, world.

Jane really believed in this film. The money people couldn’t see an audience paying money for a subject everyone was trying to forget. Not Jane - the soldiers coming home were never really welcomed because the war was not winnable or popular . Jane didn’t care about that . Whether the war was a righteous one and Jane believed it wasn’t as do most people now do, she wasn’t going to let these soldiers contribution to their country be swept under the rug . What these boys gave was their peace of mind ( PTSD) limbs , and many gave their lives. Jane may have been against the war but she was for the soldiers who gave to their country. She put her money , time , career in to making sure this film got made. It was her passion. Geraldine Page gave a performance of a lifetime but she had enough talent for two lifetimes and rightfully won fo “ trip to Bountiful “ I believe interiors and trip to bountiful were master class acting performances . Pure genius

    Thank you Jane.
Pd: Shirley was so young here! This is just lovely. Oh, and Warren Beaty was with Diane Keaton in this time :) love that couple.

My heroine, Jane Fonda, for SO MANY REASONS. I have age-related hearing loss just starting, so this was such a powerful acceptance speech, what an IMPORTANT FILM. One of the reasons I so admire her is that she has always jumped into the pool of life and lived it 200%, gone through so many phases and even in her eighties, continues to be so inspiring! Love Jane! MADGE ROY

love her hair at this time. would like to see a revival of this soft style 2017. we have all had enough of the look that has been around for ages and ages. bring back the perm with soft layers and hair rollers. it's about time this look from the seventies remembering Farrah ofcourse was revisited. It never really has apart from Madonna and that was just a quick trend. looking for a proper revival of the look not just a glimpse if the seventies from Madonna.

I actually got to be on the set of 'Coming Home' when they filmed at Rancho Los Amigos Hospital in Downey, California in 1977. A testament to the communal open feeling created by director Hal Ashby. That would never happen today. Jane was very cool and Jon Voight honestly lived that role, I'll tell you. They were both very dedicated to doing a great job.

I remember watching in TV this scene of 1979, I did not speak English at the time, I had taken a course of the language and tested my learning by listening Jane Fonda, got some phrases at the beginning, then she started to speak very fast for me, and I did not get a single word and I got depressed. Haha! I know now, 40 years later, that she was thanking people in sequence. Catching last names is a hard part for a language learner, because most of them are words that the learner has never heard.

What a Best Actress field that was--amazing!! The early fav to win was Jill Clayburg--then Rona Barrett on ABC the morning of the show said that Ingrid Bergman would get it. But I knew all along that Jane would win. She had won the Golden Globe 2 months prior AND MANY people felt that she should have won the previous year for Julia.

Back then these women did not attend this event as a walking advertisement for some dressmaker. The whole fashion shtick has become a major distraction and completely irrelevant to what is really important -- the acting. BTW, I think Shirley MacLaine looks fantastic in that full length black dress. Simple & elegant.

That same year, the National Captioning Institute was created to coordinate support from American broadcast networks. The first regularly scheduled captioning was the following year, but required a separate set-top box that often cost as much as the TV, itself. It wasn't until 1993 that it became a requirement included within televisions.

She deserved it the first time, and she deserved it the second time. Her performance in Coming Home is a rich exploration of a senstive time in our history, but the project came straight from her heart. She made the movie as means to show Vietnam vets that she was there for them and that even if there was some tension about what she did in that time, the compassion she felt she brought to her character and made a timeless impression. I wish they would show this movie more, because it is relevant.

Batman1989King If Bertolucci's "Luna" had been better received by critics maybe she would have gotten hers in the 1980 Ceremony. Her work in that movie was brilliant, too bad the controversy overshadowed it.
