  • Live 1971, from Frank Cooper's
Romantic Festival 4: Virtuoso Salon Music
GODOWSKY: Three Symphonic Metamorphoses after Themes by Johann Strauss
    Wine, Women and Song
    The bat
    Artist's Life
    Encores:
JOHANSEN: There was A Young Lady of Spain
    FRIEDMAN: Viennese Dance No. 2
    Gunnar JOHANSEN, piano
Live 20 May 1971 Butler University Indianapolis
Frank Cooper writes that no one ever played the three Symphonic Metamorphoses as a group before Johansen played them for him at this Romantic Festival, their excoriating difficulties precluding such a feat. To me it sounds like GJ is having a lot of fun.
Our deepest thanks to Don Rice, whose hand helped make the audio here clearer.

We definitely don't hear enough of this virtually unknown supervirtuoso!

Dance, anyone? Well, not just "anyone"! Only with Gunnar Johansen! However, no one stands a chance as he is way too engaged with that "Young Lady of Spain"! O-la-laaaa!
