Casals and Toscanini among many, many others prized Horszowski decades before he was “discovered” by the public as the Methuselah of the ivories. I would say listen to his 1940 Vatican recital to hear Horszowski at his best, but this is prime Miecio too, grand but never bombastic, poetry without preening and above all - as Toscanini raved - true to the score while throbbing with life. By the way, don’t buy the cherubic photos. Pupils and colleagues say Horszowski could be stinging, and good for him. So was Chopin. Thanks so much for sharing.

THANKS for posting this! Was lucky enough to see Maestro Bolet 3 or 4 times the late 1980s. Saw a lot of famous pianists in the 1980s and '90s- and Mr Bolet had the most beautiful tone/touch of them all, followed by Pollini (had a much lovelier touch than he is often given credit for) and Volodos. Met him backstage after (I think) his final recital at the RFH. He was - surprisingly - nervous.

This was simply spectacular. Thank you so much for sharing. Most incredible Brahms ever.
