  • Weaning onto solid food can be dangerous for young kittens, especially if rushed or done prematurely. In this video, I'll talk about the age that kittens are most biologically prepared to successfully wean onto wet food, and how caregivers can help kittens have the best experience possible.

    Sadly, I didn't know your videos, when I had to foster 2 newborn kittens. The Cat gave birth to them in my hallway and ran away. I tried to find her. But she didn't come back.
    It would have been so much easier for me, if I had known your videos before. To be honest, bottle feeding them every two hours was the hardest thing, I've ever done in my life. I had a full-time job and No one was able to help me with the kittens.
    But it made me so proud and happy to see them grow. They were adorable. But I cried so often in this time. Although I didn't even missed one feeding time, they lost weight in the first days. Some days they didn't want to eat. But finally they made it.
    Now they are about 1,5 years old. Living lucky together and are complete healthy. ❤

    I've actually had an interesting experience regarding weaning. Adopted an orphaned kitted at 5 weeks, was bottle fed since week 3. His "momma" said he isnt weaned, that he eats a bit of kitten food, but he eats milk more. She gave me a bottle of milk and his baby bottle. It was goat milk... My baby grew up on goat milk... When I got him home, he had no interest in kitten formula, whatsoever and was not keen on continuing to give him goat milk. I had some kitten pates bought already, one was a tuna pate(i remember because he still loves the grownup version of it :) ). Mixed it with a bit of water for him to eat it easier. When I put the bowl down and he took a lick of it, he didnt stop until he literally licked the whole bowl. He ate with such desperation that I was worried. Took him to the vet the next day, he got a clean bill of health fortunatelly. Doc said he was just probably ready to be weaned and he didnt like the kitten food her first mommy was giving him. For curiosity i gave him some goat milk afterwards. Was not interested. So kitten pate it was until he grew up :) Now he is a big happy healthy baby

    A couple of year ago I was given an “almost 5 weeks old” kitten (that later turned out to be at least a week younger) that was totally weaned according to the family that gave him to me. I asked if they could keep him another week so that he would get a little bigger and stronger and they refused, telling me to get him then or never. So I got a kitten that I soon discovered to be pretty unable to eat by himself and got really scared cause I had zero experience with cats. He nursed on food and ate nothing, and I had to hand feed him for several days before he started to eat properly on his own and gain weight. Still really pissed at the previous owners but luckily I have a big healthy boy now ✌🏼

    I rescued my first kitty a few weeks ago, he was so small and skinny we thought he was only around 4 weeks but when we took him to the vets, she told us he was around 10/11 weeks and fortunately he slowly but surely started eating more and was bottle fed too. He’s around 15 weeks now and is looking way better, he’s healthy and is full of energy. He’s also flea-free now too! Instead of giving him up for adoption we decided to keep him despite already having 3 cats!

    You are such a good teacher you take time not only to show what needs to be done, but the why. That is so helpful for people who don't have an understanding about the needs involved in nutrition. I love how you showed and explained bout the difference between the teeth. Because it does look like "hey they have teeth they can eat now". But No Not Yet! Thanks again great help. 😊🌺

    When I was in college, and we're talking back in the early 70s, a fellow student dumped (kindly) a trio of little newborns on my roomie and me, whose cat mother had been hit by a car. Because I had a cat I adopted at about five weeks who had a rough start, she thought I would know what to do. Well, I didn't, with infants less than a week old, and calls to a vet brought only the advice that we would not succeed and we should surrender them to be euthanized.
    I wish I could say it was a happy ending, but one by one we watched them try their hardest to live and not make it.
    They were born good sized from a clean, healthy mother and had no worms or fleas, and a competent carer would have saved them, no question. I've never forgotten it, or how hard my roommate took it each time we lost one (I was putting myself through a music major as a hospital nurse's aide, and had a little more realistic view of sickness and death). These little instructional videos are golden, and I can tell you I committed myself each of the mistakes Kitten Lady talks about, and how simple it is to give the little life what it needs if you only know how.
    To the memory of little Faith, Hope and Love. I have never forgotten them.

But it takes a lot of skill to actually be able to say the right things in the right way to impart knowledge. Teaching is a skill, and you have it. I wish I had seen this even a day earlier. I just had a terrible experience fostering with the HRA in DC. They gave me two 4 week old kittens they said were weaning, but that I just had to mix a bit of water with wet food, and they would be fine. I asked for KMR because I was nervous fostering young kittens. The first day went okay, mixing the KMR with food, but one of the kittens started declining. She wouldn't eat, started throwing up her food, having diarrhea, and losing weight. I was panicking, trying to feed her KMR with a tiny syringe, which she also hated. To top it off, they both had ringworm, which I think the shelter should have caught before giving them to us. I just returned the kittens this morning after another panicked night of not getting *either* of them to eat. I feel like such a failure to those poor kittens. If the shelter had just *told* me they still also needed a bottle, I think I could have done a better job. I wish they had been honest.

    from watching your videos I volunteered to foster a 2 week old kitten with an eye infection from a family friend. at first I was nervous that I was going to do everything wrong but I just watched your videos more and more and did extra researched now the kitten is 4 weeks and doing better than ever. all though little chip was the runt and was hand reared he is developing quicker than his siblings, I know this because I check on the others regularly to make sure no others had the infection. unfortunately a few days ago another has developed the illness but this is a positive for me because I gain another baby and ive called her nala. I am only 16 and thinking about advertising in my local area of becoming a cat foster would you have any tips kitten lady.

    I think the last foster I had was older than her small size. She began refusing the bottle soon after I found her and chowed down the canned food. The vet said she was healthy so I just followed her lead. She was a brave one too, totally ignoring my older cat's hisses while playing with her tail. She has a great home now and is thriving. :') Thank you for this vital info!

    I have a question for you. Over the weekend I went to my grandparents campsite where there are lots of stray cats. But I found that this single kitten was in a cage at the back of the dining hall. He looked about the age of the kittens in this video and his eyes had stuff in them, his tail was matted, his litter box was so small (and also it was everywhere), and someone was feeding him bacon. Now I don’t think bacon is good for a cat. I don’t 5ink any of that was good for him. What’s your opinion on this and should the person who put him in that cage do something different?

    And how do you know a kitten's age? For example, how do you if they're three weeks old or a malnourished five-week old? I know when they're very little there are some signs like still having their umbilical cord, their eyes closed, their ears folded,... But is there a way to tell a kitten's age by sight when they're older than that?

    • @janierose4786
      @janierose4786 5 років тому +4

      If a kitten is the size, weight, and social ability of a 3 week old, I treat it as a 3 week old.
      I've gotten in a malnurished kitten who was probably close to 5.5 weeks, but she was smaller than a 3 week old, so we weaned her several weeks later than we normally would have.

    We rescued a 4 week old orphan kitten from a neighborhood. She is now 6 weeks and we are in the final stages of weaning. Question for you: when do you recommend introducing slightly moist dry food into the mix? I tried to find this info on your website but could not.
    Also! Thanks to your videos and website information she (Oreo) is doing amazing. She had her vet visit and the vet was so proud of how dedicated we were to removing her fleas. And it's all thanks to your flea bathing video! So thank you for what you do to help others be successful kitten foster parents and kitten caretakers!

    We just lost a cat from Leukemia. The cat was healthy, my family went to the vet and she said he was ok. Two days later he started to have symptoms and my family went to another vet and they told them that the little kitten was dying that there was nothing to do. He died this morning.
    I was not there unfortunately. I live abroad. I wonder though if they should have checked him the first time. Leone was a wonderful cat, I could see that from the pictures they sent me.
    I know you covered this topic in another video... I just have no strength to look at it at the moment... Not even searching info online... Maybe I am just here to vent a bit... I am very sad, they saved him, he made their life better and then he is not here anymore. I know that if I was there I would have a bit more research of that stupid virus... But I wasn't there and my mum just trusted the vet...

    • @megalopolis2015
      @megalopolis2015 5 років тому +1

      Perhaps that vet should be investigated. Maybe he has very bad reviews online(or maybe they should). I try to research the best medical professionals, but it can still be so difficult to find someone to trust with your loved ones. At least that kitty had a lot of love in its short life. I hope you can take some comfort in that.

    • @jasminejohnson4850
      @jasminejohnson4850 5 років тому +1

      megalopolis2015 why should the vet be investigated? Feline Leukemia is a tricky virus and there is also disagreement about when a kitten should even be tested for it due to it producing false positives.

    • @megalopolis2015
      @megalopolis2015 5 років тому

      I do understand that to an extent, Jasmine. I know that specific tests for leukemia have to be done, generally, before it is detected, so I do have that in mind. I would start with the reviews for this vet, to see if this is a prevailing issue or not. If it is, that could mean that the doctor is not ordering these tests enough.

    • @jasminejohnson4850
      @jasminejohnson4850 5 років тому

      megalopolis2015 my point was why automatically go to “it’s the vet’s fault” for something that kills 85 percent of cats. I was just saying there are so many questions from her story we don’t know. She said the cat was healthy the first time they went to the vet. Was the kitten even infected at the time? How old was the kitten? Was the kitten vaccinated? I’m just saying everyone wants to turn to the how the vet was bad or the problem instead of looking at ways to avoid the spread of such a serious virus. We know nothing about her story other than what she shared but somehow the vet is at fault and needs to be investigated. Very strange to me. That is all.

    • @hilindig
      @hilindig 5 років тому +1

      Hi all, as I said I was pretty upset yesterday and I was not clear in explaining everything. The cat was one month old, and no for sure he was not vaccinated. He was healthy when they went to the vet, as the vet stated and as they could see since he was very energetic and gaining weight. They went to the vet again the day after and the cat was still fine (they went just to be extra careful). Two days later the cat did not feel well (he was not energetic anymore) and therefore they went to another vet and they told them the cat had leukemia. Few hours later the cat died in the arms of my mother.
