How I test my tension and pulling up the bobbin after I stitch.

On this snowy April 1st, I decided it's time to talk about tension. I want to show you one way I test my tension. Today I am using Sewtites Magnum magnets to load up a small quilt sandwich off to the side of my quilt. I can't just test off to the side because the creator of the quilt uses a self binding method and needs the excess to do her binding. I have also use the HQ Super Clamps before and really like how they work but I was short some space this time for those.
I also take you through the steps to bring up the bobbin thread after stitching and talk about why you need to make sure you are giving yourself enough space to keep that bobbin tail long.

Just got my Amara - first ever longarm. Was fine with the installation tuition, but just loaded a quilt on, but not enough room at the side to play, so I had pinned a strip of batting and fabric which wasn't ideal (yeah, tension driving me crazy!) and I love the idea of how you added a large separate part. This is quite the lightbulb being turned on - thank you so much!

Adam, I love your talk about the Toya. (Sp) I worked in the OR. Taught nurses how to do.. my whole speech is this is how I do it. You will modify to what works for you. Two things need to be here, your blades and your needles so everyone knows and no on gets hurt. Other than that like quilting and stitch quality they needed to keep things sterile. That’s what matters. Other instructors said. “Do it my way or else”

Love your videos! Thank you for the tips especially about pulling a long enough tail so that it is long enough for next time. I kept going under and readjusting my bobbin so I would have a long enough tail. Also the tip on the magnets.
I always stress in class how important that bobbin tail needs to be and I can tell when the lightbulb finally turns on and they understand what I mean.

I love what you said about preferring a looser or tighter bobbin. I tried the pre-wound bobbins and found them to be REALLY tight, so I prefer to wind my own 🤷♀️
I used to run a tighter bobbin but have found I have less issues with a looser bobbin.
As I'm new to LAQ (no ProStitcher.....yet!) I'm on a steep learning curve, so your tutorials are like gold to me - thanks a million!!!

It’s worth the money! No one has time to spend hours and hours on tension. Actually I loosened my bobbin too much and lost that tiny screw! More frustration so I went to Amazon and Etsy and ordered a lot of them so I’m set and so yeah now I just use Towa. I only had to set it once.
I found by experimenting and finding my right tension I kind of became “one” with my machine 🥰 I also really like to use either so fine or glide on top and always bottom line on the bottom- I am sure other threads esp on the top would work but for now I’m happy with those choices. Ps - think you are great

Another great video. It is super helpful. I have been using Glide on the top and magna-glide pre-wound bobbins. Once I found a tension setup that worked for me, I've been reluctant to try other combos because this is just so good. But I do want to try some other thread and your closeups and the descriptions of your process are empowering. Thank you!
You can always try a different thread on top and still use the magna-glide bobbins. You don’t have to change your bobbin to change tour top, remember that. Also, make a note of your top tension number and it’s easy to get right back to where you currently are. Have fun playing.

If you have an Infinity, it’s the horizontal grey bobbin, then use the plus/minus to adjust up and down. If you have any other machine, tension is adjusted with your tension assembly where you thread your machine.

Yeah I don’t have time for all that tension trick nonsense so I use a Towa! Drop test did not work with my machine so yeah I’m not going to get all flustered and upset over tension. I use only Glide thread but I’ll add some others in eventually but for my Qnique it’s towa ir else it really upsets me and I just don’t have time for tricks! If it works for others God Bless you but my chronic pain stays at eight so I get limited Longarm time already so Towa was a good fix for me.

Question, if I have a new needle in and my stitches are not picking bobbin up in the up stroke mode, is my top tension too tight? I’m thinking that may be my problem. Blessings. Most of the time, if your not picking up the thread your needles is in backwards. Make sure the groove that runs the length of the needle is in the front. The other thing might be your bobbin tail is not long enough to bring up all the way.

Yes, you can use it with any thread. It's just giving a number to the tension that bobbin is sitting at. The number is thread specific and I mostly use Superior Threads and they have a fabulous guide under the Education section on their webpage that shows each of their threads and what the Towa should read. I'm not sure if other brands have that too since I really only use So Fine and Bottom Line in my bobbin.

Do you have a video on how you keep your quilts square when doing E2E quilting?
So when you use your Omni, are you putting Omni in the bobbin too? Or do you just match the color thread with your bobbin thread?
I like to match my thread with the fabric. Many times I have a customer with a very light top and a very dark backing, so I want to be able to use different colors on top and bottom. My problem is when the machine is going some directions, the thread is perfect. When it changes direction. I see bobbin threads poking through. Any thoughts?
When you are testing the tension, make sure you are doing circles. They will pull different than straight lines. I usually never match the back fabric, I always try to match my from. So many things can happen as you stitch and it can throw off your tension just a little and when using those different colors, just the smallest fluctuation can show. See which way it is fluctuating and you can try to adjust for those little switches but it might cause the top to move to the back. If you are using a thinner type of batting, you could try to use something a little thicker. This will give you move space for those threads to meet in the middle.
Why wouldn’t/couldn’t one use So Fine for both too and bobbin please? I’m a newbie quilter with a Moxie. Here to ask all the dumb questions. 😂
But seriously. Why is Bottom Line best for the bobbin thread please? Could I save money by just using So Fine for both?
You can use both So Fine and Bottom Line on the top and bottom. Those just happen to be the only threads I use in my bobbin. They are both thinner than 40wt threads, so bobbins last longer.

Recognizing what you said about each machine being different, do you have any tips about some good starting ranges for Towa/bobbin tension for different threads? Would be helpful to get me in the right zip code and then make adjustments from there. Thank you!!
I mostly use Superior Threads and they have a wonderful Education section on their webpage and have a Towa Bobbin Gauge Template that shows each of their threads and where the gauge should read. I have that printed out so I can easily referenced it. The number is thread specific, so this makes it easy. I'm not sure if other brands also have this, as I only use Bottom line or So Fine in my bobbin. The Towa tension would be the same across all the machine, because it is based on the thread. The top tension is the one that will change and I wish there was a range I could give you but I have seen two class machine that had more than an 80 number difference. That's why I always use the Towa, I know the bobbin is correct and I just have to mess with the top to get it dialed in. I promise once you get used to changing it and understanding how it works, you will become a pro in no time.
I paused this vid and ordered the rows gauge. So, you re-check tension after each thread switch? I also found I have to re-check when I switch between manual (for micro) to cruise, so I’ve had to be more strategic with that in mind. What’s your oil routine? I switch between colors a lot too, so I can’t go by the “after every 2 bobbins” guide in the manual. I just make it my weekly maintenance.

I love your videos and I have a Towa gauge. Have you ever has issues where you get your tension perfect with a full bobbin, but towards the end of the bobbin it changes? I always have to tighten it as I go, I start getting eyelashes underneath, but it’s mostly when there is 1/3 of thread left. 🤷♀️
Rebecca, I do have a similar issue but with mine, the bobbin tends to get tighter. I always try to keep an eye on the bobbin as I'm stitching and when it starts to get a bit low, I change it. I would rather waste a little thread than have to pull out stitches.

They are a Handi Quilter product. Your local retailer can order them for you.
It sounds like you set by thread type however I found some colors in the same type of thread need a different tension setting. I use cotton thread and find the darker colors are much different than a white or cream. I assume it has something to do with the dye in the thread.
I do set by thread type but I have also found I might need to make little adjustments for color. I use the number as my base number and it usually works for most but I still check it and adjust a few numbers up or down if needed.
Adam, I'm a new LAQer. I'd love to know if you have different strategies for people who self bind the back to the front. Mostly I worry about getting the measurements precise for E2E since quilts are never perfectly square. I worry about the potential of having unsecured threads on the sides if I don't get the E2E measurements spot on as the quilt advances. Do you only do Freehand for these customer? BTW - We also have 5 seasons in Maine. ❄️ Fake Spring in Cleveland = Mud Season in Maine! 💩
So just me personally but I do always free motion for this client. She is the only one who I quilt for that does a self bind. If you are going to do an E2E on something you are going to self bind, I would set up your edge 2 edge design. After it’s set up, baseline and save it. Then I would crest an area at each advance and crop so you only have the row you want to stitch. It will cut off the sides and keep everything within your area. After stitching that row, cancel out and undo your crop. Advance, set a new area, crop and repeat. I hope that makes sense. Usually I like to stitch off the sides when I e2e because tops are usually not straight. Good luck and thanks for watching!!
Adam you mentioned you always stitch with your ruler base on. Why?
What do you do if your quilt fills the whole frame?
If there is no space because your quilt fills everything, I would stitch a little and check. It’s really your only option is you don’t have room.

We only run one thread type because of it. Do you run your bobin tension the same for all different types of thread?
I only use Bottom Line or So Fine in my bobbins, so I run them both at about 190 on my TOWA.

Sorry I didn't get back to you yesterday. I was at educator training all week in Salt Lake and just returned home at 12 last night. The RUN button will only appear and be able to be activated when you are in the Pro-Stitcher tab, with Quilt in the ribbon selected. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE MOVED YOUR START POINT TO THE CORRECT POSITION BEFORE YOU HIT RUN. PS always wants to start at the beginning unless you tell it to start somewhere else.
Adam, the number 80 that your tension first was set on your machine, does that coincide with a TOWA number or is it just your Longarm setting number on the machine's top tension? Thank you . I know you are very busy, but maybe you will get this comment even tho' it is now Dec. 30, 2021. Thank you.
I might even get to your comment in a little over an hour. This is my top tension (easy set tension) on some of the Handi quilter machines. It's like a built in Towa but only for the top thread instead of the bobbin. If you go to the Superior Threads website and select education, you can find their Towa chart and use that for your threads. Even if you don't use Superior Threads, the numbers work for the same type of thread across the board. Happy New Year!

I'm not sure what ruler you are referring to. I don't have a half square triangle ruler. I used the Creative Grids Ultimate Flying Geese Tool but that's the only specialty ruler I really use. I do have friends that swear by the Block-loc rulers.
