He did after he had stopped drinking but when he gotten throat cancer back in 2005 & started doing some DUMB shit during his recovery like back to drinking & all of a sudden smoking weed which was mixed with something else, he was back to his old self

Kratos wasn’t at all an exemplary dad in the first game. He was cold, distant, harsh, and emotionally stunted but he never ever belittled Atreus or try to make him feel that he was useless or stupid.
Thor is so accustomed to this that it’s just normal for him and he doesn’t even talk back.
There were a few times, but Kratos quickly caught himself and tried to redirect his frustration. That was the biggest difference, that and he never hit his son or abused him like Odin to Thor.
@@MechWarrior894 He feels like someone who's recognised how a bunch of toxic masculinity traits (rage, pushing down sentimentality for duty etc) more or less ruined him and everything he cared for and now he's TRYING to be better, teaching his son to be better and treating him better. Ie Agoge training might make great fighters but also those who don't care for life or others that much on top of it's brutal treatment of children, so he raised his son without putting him through it.

Thor is a broken child who wanted to hear just once a sincere "You did great son, I'm proud of you!" from Odin but tragically never gets it.

the sad scene for me was when atreus collected all part of the mask with the help of thor high of ice mountain odin arrived and thor was excited to hear nice from odin so he reached to him. but odin just casually talking with atreus.
@@LegendaryDarkKnight602 You probably already know this, but during Odin’s fight, he talks about how everything that he himself did is completely Kratos’s fault, and in a certain part of dialogue, Kratos says that Odin started the fight. Odin replied by saying “this started long before you showed up, you are a plague, God-Killer!” Even though Odin had actually started it by killing Thor

I had originally thought that Thor would kill Odin with how hot headed & violent he is, but through this game he just looks tired & doesn't know who to slap.
It's because Odin tells him what to think and who to kill so Thor is just like a robot. Plus it speaks to Heart that bad parents can just manipulate their kids into being whatever they want them to be with just the right amount of abuse

I do like how in the previous game, we were ready to take Thor out, but playing this game, our emotions quickly switched. Santa Monica Studios did an awesome job of making him an ally.
i loved thor in this game
hearing Mimir describing Thor as a murderous asshole and describing Odin like basically Zeus, made us really prepared to face him. But man, they flipped the tables on our expectations turns out Thor is just a lovable big guy and Odin is a manipulative douche.

As someone who suffered from parental abuse it was really damn hard for me to watch many of the Thor scenes. He is clearly depressed and confused, and it's all Odin's fault

Oof Odin is soo evil and he is one of the most insidious kinds of evil. The kind of guy who pretends to be nice and almost makes you believe he has your best interest but relentlessly manipulates and abuses those he loves with guilt and shame and makes sure they feel useless.

Santa Monica portrayed their iterations of Thor and Odin perfectly. Their strained relationship paints that Odin never gave an ounce of love to Thor, and is more a master than an actual father to the God of Thunder. You could easily mistake them their relationship with a soldier blindly following his leader rather than being father and son. It mimics Kratos and Atreus earlier relationship in the first game, sort-of.
Yeah since they twisted Baldur so much it makes sense that they twist Odin and Thor like this as well

Even with how hard Kratos was in the beginning of the last game on Artreus you can tell that throughout the game he was really trying his best to be a good father. Especially with everything he went through from his past life in Greece

Damn that honestly sounds exactly like something odin would say to himself in can even read it in his voice and it matches perfect.
Seems to me that Odin also in a way fears thor (notice his reaction when thor speaks from behind him). This may be another reason as to why Odin seeks to make thor feel like he is less. To keep him docile and easier to control.
Thor replaced Fenrir from the mythology for the most part. Fenrir got treated like shit up until he turned on Odin.

@@frankwest5388 Odin says it himself - he cannot see the future for himself. No Valhalla, no Ragnarok, no shit. Thor was supposed to die in glorious fight against the World Serpent. His sons were supposed to survive, Baldur had also some role, Heimdall, etc.
It's exactly as Mimir said in the first game - Odin desires knowledge for himself and he will do anything to obtain it.
He probably was terrified of the idea that he will just perish and will be forgotten.
That's why he also was so bend on making sure that Ragnarok will not start - no Ragnarok means he will live.

Thor despite having a lot of problems cares about family and others I don't think Thor really hates giants but I think he was forced into hating them by Odin
@yeet king61 even so he was like the kid that always wanted to impress hos family but instead his brother baldur got all the credit from his brothers and sisters that thor was made out to be the bad one of the lot so that's why he resorted to killing giants that odin wanted to get rid of but it wasn't enough until kratos stepped into midgard knowing that thor wanted to see what he truly was like but odin insisted baldur to take the mission to seek out and kill kratos after knowing his past and also capturing his son loki ( atreus) due to a prophecy that odin soo wanted to desire on that's when thor wanted to get himself wasted at the asgard tavern to realise how messed up his family is and he knows when and how to start a test up warm up fight to anyone that wants to challenge him and that made him want to see what kratos was really like in a bloodthirsty fight because he killed thors sons magni and modi but never cared too much for baldur just because he's gone odin turned his focus to thor to seek out and destroy kratos and that's when his wife sif said that odins using thor for his fake prophecy that immensely backfired when atreus snapped the mask in half and sucked into oblivion.

Loki and Thor are often together in their many adventures in Norse mythology. I love the moment in this game Atreus tricked Thor into doing the Surtr combat challenge to sneak off and do his thing. That is a very Loki-Thor dynamic.

You know the sad and funny thing? Atreus does indeed starts to be nice to Thor and wouldn't you know, they start bonding, but Odin, seeing this, reminds Thor that "btw this boy is the one that killed your son, Modi"

I don't think they found out Atreus personally killed Modi. He mentions this in the game, and there were no witnesses around. They just think he helped Kratos kill them, which isn't much better but takes most of the blame away from him

Odin pretty much treats Thor more like his personal attack dog moreso than his own son.
Because thor is Odin's attack dog, and I have a theory why. I feel like Odin stop Thor for going to get revenge on his family and just sent, his children to carry out the order, when Modi failed twice odin order thor to beat him to a bloody pulp. Which would lead Thor to be broken mentally and physically drinking away his problems his anger is frustration, because he has lost so much that all he has is his daughter and wife
Thor isn't Odin's son to him, he is just a means to achieve what Odin wants. Thor knew this and just didn't want to believe it, Odin is just a selfish jerk who only cares about defying his death to the point that he is self destructive and the cause for his own prophecy's end.

@@StinkyPoopyMcFartFace Odin comes across as something like a high-functioning sociopath. He's only barely aware of other people having their own desires or emotions, and he cares even less. Everyone and everything is just a tool for Odin to get what HE wants, and thoughts about how that impacts other people don't even begin to form. He lies as easily as he breathes, and gaslights and manipulates his family into serving his interests. He's probably been shaping Thor into his attack dog from the moment the poor bastard could walk, and any ability to resist or defy Odin has long since been driven out of him.
What struck me as well was that Odin's the worst kind of Villain, the kind who uses twisted logic to show himself as the good guy.
At 2:55 where he talks about being nice to Thor doesn't get you anywhere is probably true from Odin's perspective.
That "What could he possibly learn from me?" Was too real. I don't have the game, but that is good writing. You can see the entire story between Odin and Thor in just that answer coming from that monster of man. Like, I can imagine Thor putting might over mind just out of Odin's attitude. He was too dumb to be smart so he decided to focus on strength. Since it was the only thing he was good at, he pushed it even more, while considering both intelligence and empathy to be useless, or be more specific he saw himself too stupid to be smart or kind.

0:52 this is why i believe Atreus really downplayed his strength, as a way to decieve Thor, Odin etc. In this scene he actually pushes AND MOVES Mjolnir away, Atreus was truly the Trickster God
I did this while playing too, I refused to use Spartan Rage when they would goad you in the fights saying things like, "THIS is the God of War?" or "Show me the real you." Just felt right not to give in.
Ryan Hurst being cast as Thor is perfect in every way

when i started playing with my dad, his first reaction was a shocked “but he’s so small, Kratos would just need to whack him once and that’s it” and mine an excited “yeah, that’s exactly what he wants you to think”.
i love this portrayal so much, because as the game goes on you start to understand exactly why Odin is the one who runs things in asgard. even the small things like the surveillance birds and manipulation towards Thor feel exactly like things myth Odin would do.

Odin is a great character, but not as Odin, or a Norse God anyways. He looks and talks like a mafia boss or a corrupt but powerful politician. He is very well-spoken and smart, but his portrayal makes me think of an evil wizard from a fantasy story instead of a Viking God. It's alright, it's a different take and it works so, all is well. Thor is absolutely perfect though, best version of Thor I have ever seen, without contest.
@@KroVey Yeah there's a real dialogue problem in this game. I have mentioned before, I feel it's ironic Thor is played by Ryan Hurst, cause the dialogue sounds like it was written by Kurt Sutter, the Sons of Anarchy guy lol. Ryan Hurst and Odin's actor could still churn out a great performance with some slightly more believable dialogue.

After he slew the first giant, he kinda wanted to be more of an intellectual rather than the brutish kind, in the myths he did don more of hermit like magician figure. He wanted knowledge so much he hanged and stabbed himself with gungnir and the noose that IS seen in game. He never was a viking warmongerer, after his youth, unless he has too.
I think this is the most badass interpretation of Thor I've ever seen, I love how the actors for games like this give it their all not just with lines but motion capture now. I think without Odin's malignant influence on him he could possibly have been quite a noble god since despite Thor's words he seemed the opposite to proud of his (mis)deeds.
It would have been nice to see a redemption arc in which he gets better. Becomes a better Thor…

we did see full power thor. his second fight with kratos. kratos is just more powerful.
@@tylerkeeler4269na he clearly was poisoned by Jormungander coz their 2nd fight is shorter than their first when they were both holding back. 2018 gow even said the axe was imbued with the poison so clearly not a throwaway moment, just like how they foreshadowed tyr being odin, they setup thor being poisoned.

@@aenarioncourts9516 kratos knew Zeus had no favorites, I doubt Odin was any better. Freya mentions when baldur was younger he tried to get his dads attention with little success. I’m doubtful he was any better by the time he got cursed.
@@GreaterGrievobeast55 The thing that made Odin and Zeus different is in a way we can understand Odin a bit better. An asshole odin might be he also shows a little characteristics of the infallibility of humans. I think zeus has no favorites since he isnt someone who really want kids since he just wants to fuck people when he wants and needs to.
Odin might have a favorite clearly He is fascinated or interested in people who have thirst for knowledge. and that is why he places respect for Atreus even a little.
The clips only have explained /how/ cruel Odin was. I definitely love how Odin's evil was portrayed here- psychological warfare outshining his tangible, brute power.

Ohhh, another clever manipulation. Odin knows that being nice to Thor, to show mercy and understanding is the only thing that can break Thor out of his chains because those are all things Odin kept from him as he raised him. Now instead of opening up, he makes up something about having tried.
Odin says trying nice to Thor and see where it gets you. Kratos did try it and he showed he understood Thor better than his old man did.
In many ways, Odin reminds me of Palpatine, a businessman, and a shady/sketchy con-man all in one.
If Odin is Palpatine, Thor is clearly Darth Vader.

Man, did I really really love this portrayal of Thor and Odin. Especially Thor. This toxic abusive father-son relationship was both heartbreaking and fascinating to watch. Don’t get me wrong, I love both Kratos and Atreus. But Thor, Heimdall, Odin and the rest of the Aesir where the major highlights for me in this game. I would love a DLC, whole game or something with them. Thei jus so compelling.

@@MCSPARTAN501 That wound isn't healing because the axe was imbued by Eitr by the world serpent in the game before this, which in norse mythology is the same poison that kills him when fighting Jormugandr. It is directly harmful to him and thus won't heal properly.

Going by an irl personality description, he Is exactly the robot that Odin wanted to turn Thor into, he would be like a social outcast, the perfect description of a Sociopath benefitting from other people's Gain, a machine Who only knows the meaning of survival, had he not been cursed or sent by Odin to kill the last Giant, he still wouldn't like Atreus and Kratos Shanigans and would likely betray the family Just to kill them, as he probably finds values like love, peace and respect boring.

@@Noblekale4006 baldur was still useful to odin and baldur shared the same madness like odin, because under working under him for so long he eventually came under the influence of the all father, but honestly baldur didnt fear odin, but respected him.
Baldur doesnt fear death, he wanted to feel something, that should give us a hint about his persoanlity, he probably had more authority than thor.
Baldur was useful, because he didnt hesitate to do the dirty work, he became odins fist, his wrath, an unstoppable, unkillable opponent you couldnt beat

It definitely wouldn't make sense in this game, but I would've loved to see these characters in a scene with Baldur. I wonder how he fits in with them, because you can totally see that they're part of the same crowd.
I’d like to see when all the archers in Asgard fired upon him to see how many arrows he could take. Even he had a good time, laughing. And of course probably the only one who could beat Thor in drinking contests.

I honestly need a DLC to see the Aesir Vanir war, Giant-God relations, and Thor doing what he did. It honestly still kinda boggles my mind how Thor is half giant & still became a Giant-killer. It’s even more ironic when you remember Magni, Thor’s beloved warrior son, was even more Giant than he was, because Magni’s mom/Thor’s first love was a giant herself.
The way every god was casted and portrayed was once again right on the money. Odin being a conniving, slimy banker type, Thor the broken weapon of his all powerful father, Heimdall was my personal favorite - I love that his powers of foresight made him into a completely insufferable ego head - cuz he was literally untouchable in a fight, he reminded me of Floyd mayweather 😂 - could go on but this game is GOTY and it’s not even close.

Society always talks about narcissism. Thor and Odin relationship is the definition of that. Odin can faine love and care. But he cannot feel it. He only responds positively to people who can benefit him. Once that use is over. Odin discards whoever he was dealing with. For example he knows thor responds best to him when he is in doubt or crisis. Thor doesn't have the will to push back so to Odin a man that won't push back is not a threat. So he keeps Thor in a state of constant depression and self doubt because that state benefits Odin. If Odin was to find his grounding. He would eventually outright refuse to do Odin bidding. Odin lost any capability of loving anyone else beyond himself the day his first wife Fjorgyn died. Yes, he is a narcissist but I think he had some good in him before that fateful death. I guess that made him aware of how everything can end, so he became the heartless manipulative machinator and mass murderer we know. A man who has no family nor friends, only subjects and marionettes. And I guess that's why Odin's brothers (Vili and Ve) do not show up, they didn't want to be his marionettes anymore.
Kind of ironic that they give Odin the personality and qualities of Loki from the myth, and now people are sympathetic to Loki while hating Odin.
I find it hilarious GOW portrays Odin more like a snarky office supervisor than a monarch like Zeus.
Seen men like Thor. Constantly belittled and diminished by their dads and even when they grew into big strong adults, they didn't fight back and just took it. It's like they were still kids whenever confronted with the abusive father.
One thing that I found extremely ironic is that, after hearing all about the horrible acts of violence and tyranny these two caused from the stories in the first game, when Thor and Odin are first introduced in the start of this game there is a brief moment where we think to ourselves that maybe everything we heard about them was exaggerated or misconstrued (or maybe even completely false) and perhaps they're not as bad as we were led to believe. And as it turns out we WERE right, but not about Odin (who we thought might actually be the best of the Aesir), Thor (the one who we were led to believe was a merciless killer like former Kratos but worse) actually turned out to be super relatable and just as tragic as Kratos where-as Odin turned out to be the most evil villain in the whole GOW series

I really liked how they (Santa monica studios) just took one norse mythology and just totally ran with it with regards to Thor and Odin relationship.... I really give props to them (developers) in sticking with the end results (it doesnt matter about the position of the characters change in the storyline) but the end goal is still the same.. even atreus and Odin feels liked a father and son relationship in this game even though we dont acknowledge it..

In the original mythology depending on which version Loki was the bloodbrother of Odin. The whole dynamic they made really breathes a fresh dose of life into the poetic edda. I can’t argue with the end results and I do like to think old Snorri who wrote about the old sagas would be shedding a tear over this interpretation.
The diffefence between Kratos and Thor (apart from Kratos is the protagonist of course) is their rebellious spirit. Kratos fights against his fate. Thor doesn't.

I think they are just creating parallels between Kratos and Odin. Both have lost the love of their lifes (Kratos, twice), both have sons who are half giant and both are hard on their respective sons because they are emotionally stunted by loss.
I kind of hoped there would be a moment where kratos was hit by thors lightning and laugh it off by talking about who his father is

This game is amazing, but it's truly amazing in one way I never expected. It presents its characters with very tangible, realistic, and complex emotions.
Thor in particular this game was so realistic that it made me step back. He is horribly depressed, and the only time he feels any sense of joy at all is when he's brawling. He is struggling to deal with the emotions he has from loss of his sons; and he escapes from those emotions by drinking. The post bar brawl scene with Thrud really got to me. She's dealing with the reality of her family being broken, and the reality of having an alcoholic parent who is and was abused by their parent. Thor loves his wife and daughter, but his depression and his coping mechanisms prevent him from being the best dad he can be.
And also while his sons are dead, he can't kill Kratos because Odin needs Atreus' trust. So all he can do for his kids is to just throw Kratos a couple of times, and call the blood dept paid. This is sad

Agree, but his anger is (partially) misplaced. Even his wife Sif blames Odin for what happened to Magni and Modi. Odin basically gave them a task he knew they wouldn't be able to complete; and they ended up paying the price for it.
Thor as a father is valid in being angry at Kratos and Atreus, but his lack of anger toward his own father Odin is where he falls short.

In hindsight, Odin's first meeting with Kratos might've been his cruelest moment of all to Thor. He calls his dead sons useless, and mocks his attempts at sobriety as Thor being "no fun anymore" pretty much the worst dad on the planet.
If you think about it, Thors mother was a giant, and he was taught to hate and kill giants.

I saw some comments of people being surprised by his speed and stealth, people forget, even in real life the more physically strong, the more powerful and fast you are, they are usually equal. Thor has shown to be above hades (he states thor hit him stronger than anything ever has, and in lore hades is the strongest god to actually land a hit on him, if I recall Zues never did) so of course he would have speed on that level.
Even Helios has infinite speed, as he could light the underworld (infinite) and universe (infinite) instantly. And even Kratos could dodge and block that.

1. Zeus definitely hit Kratos multiple times in their fights. In the first QTE on the 2d section Kratos and Zeus smack each other and send each other flying.
2. Kratos never stated that Thor hit harder than any of his prior opponents, rather that his blows were AS HARD.
3. Being physically stronger doesn't necessarily mean you'll be faster, especially if it's achieved through weight being gained in which case that can be a detriment to your speed.
Kratos proved showing a little kindness would've gone a long way with thor.

I've always loved the Kratos/Thor parallels. Abusive fathers, violent pasts, feared by all, loved by few and often unable to see when it comes. Each using their strength to intimidate others and validate themselves. The only difference is Zeus didn't break Kratos, but Odin broke Thor. Zeus was a bully and a narcissist, Odin is a true blue sociopath and manipulator.
Put simply, I think you can argue Zeus felt some degree of loyalty toward the other gods and to Olympus, even if none of it mattered more than himself. But Odin, its hard to imagine he genuinely cared about anybody, or if he was even capable. Fascinating, fascinating character writing
