The white paper ones were great padding. We tried the yellow burritos and really didn't last. The med military mummy bag was great it was cloth and was toasty. Wiggys bags were very popular with the forest service firefighters they are warm and durable.
I served from 78 to 84 with the forest circus on a hot shot crew and then on a engine crew. I never saw or used that style of bag. We either provide our own or was issued a paper sleeping bag from supply at fire camp. See if you can find a FSS issue paper bag and review one of those! I got to share one with a scorpion that stung me behind the ear in New Mexico and the next day was flooded out of my bag by my FTTO ( foreman tanker truck operator ). Lots of memories with those paper bags and Vietnam era C rations! Stay safe and healthy!
My wife bought FOUR (4) kits for this pattern in these materials and SEWED THEM ON A HOME SINGER SEWING MACHINE. Was THAT ever a labor of love! This was how we and our two sons started our backpacking and camping days all those years ago. The boys loved the adventures...and we did as well.😀 Despite the emotional value, the polyfill did clump after a few years of being stuffed and unstuffed and tossed and turned in. We had to move on.
I was a seasonal worker for the forest service in 78, 79, and 80. On one fire i worked, we were given sleeping bags made of paper that was layered. They sucked. You should try to find one of those.
I worked for the Forest Service between my freshman and sophomore year of college. We got the paper sleeping bags too. Great for ground cover but not for sleeping in.
Nice to see my name scroll by in the Wolf Pack. Been a supporter for almost a year now. If you recall, I worked for CIT (California Institute of Technology) installing seismic monitoring devices back in the 60's. We also did titanium tipped balance beams along various fault lines across the country. In one episode you came across one of our abandoned sites somewhere in the Carolinas. Always enjoy your knowledgeable product presentations.
Sportsmans Guide is exactly what you said. Several years ago I purchased several items (so long ago I can't remember what I purchased) for deer hunting and pretty much all of it was junk. What they charge for shipping is ridiculous. Usually more than what the item cost.
When I was in Forest Service Trail Crew we supported local forest fires. I remember one medium fire that was important to someone and they brought out everything ( local crew, hot shots, helicopter and water bombers). They also brought logistics of command tent, food cafeteria and supply depot. SOOOoooo, anyway, what I got from the supply depot was a paper sleeping bag. Yep, a for real white puffy sleeping bag made of paper. I wanted to keep it (and I could) except our super experienced supervisor was asked to stay longer than the rest of the crew. He asked if he could take my paper sleeping bag (SIGH!!!, ....sure). We all brought our 'fire crew' sleeping bag but the supervisor told us to go to supply depot and ask for another sleeping bag. All taco-ed in with the paper sleeping bag inside out regular sleeping bag made the high colorado mountian bareable during that forest fire moment.
Oh, great! Now I feel this near obsessive need to find/build a paper sleeping bag... Seriously though, I would like to get my hands on one for testing.
I like three thing about this and I will be buying one, first the temps it can be used at, second the price, third the color. If your in the woods and in distress you need something bright for others to see you. The yellow would be perfect. You may say but won't it be in a tent. I only use tents in fall to winter, I'm usually either out in nature or under a tarp so if I'm in trouble the yellow at night would be awesome if I need to be found. The last reason I know I said 3 but I thought for myself a fourth and that is opening the bottom, I sleep hot and being able to cool the feet down is priceless. Thank you look I'm going to ebay now.
The lime green or yellow volor is so they can lay them out for recognition in tge event they have to have aircraft do a water drop close to them or if they get turned around and need to be evacuated
Nice ! I have one ! 1988 is when I got my bag looks exactly the same as the one that you are showing. It's always worked great for me ! This was really cool to see you review this !! Thanks for sharing this with us 👍👍😎
As a former type 2 firefighter for the US Forestry Service I had never seen one or heard of one I was told if I wanted a sleeping bag I would of had to go buy one and that was 12 year ago
Like Ben, I had the pleasure of using a couple of the white "paper" sleeping bags, along with USFS firm foam sleeping pads back in the mid 1980's. I was working with a private wildland fire team at the time, and was told to only bring a "cheap", warm-weather bag and no pad, as personal gear was prone to damage or "disappearing". Arrived to basecamp about 1 a.m., (so of course "supply" was closed for the night) and a huge weather shift with a cold front dropped temps well below freezing. My "summer" bag, tent, no pad etc. made for a very miserable night! Next day I was more than happy to get a USFS 1/2 inch or so thick closed cell foam pad, and two of the "paper" sleeping bags to layer over my cheap summer bag. That, and purchasing a thick knit hat, and sweatpants made the 20 degree nights bearable! :D I was assigned to night shift, but it was too cold to work nights.. any water source would quickly freeze.. so we took turns working on day shift. :D Thanks for the memories! :D
Agree with you about SW. After multiple attempts to purchase from them and product not available or was trash I had them remove me from mailing list. Promptly threw away all catalogs.
From what you've said (& you have no idea how many $ your reviews have saved me) I will definitely be picking one of these up Thanks for the video & thanks to whoever sent it to you !!
I bought a Modular Sleep System last year. Got sick of cheap commercial bags that never performed like they advertised and always left me cold. Yeah, it's a little bulky and heavy, but for truck camping it's just perfect. And I can take just the components I need so it typically won't be the full bulk or weight.
I also have the MSS and its' served me well over the last decade. Only problem I have is the bulk of it. I now have a VenBivy, but have yet to try it out, so the MSS is in my SUV just in case.
Luke, lad you pointed out Sportsman's was ripping us off. I hadn't heard it before. I must have been living under a rock. None of us should be buying from them. Thanks for the tip.....nice bag. Would buy. Hate the yellow. I was a firefighter for quite a while and I hated that yellow back then...lol
I'd bet they constructed the zipper to open up the bag into a blanket to make it function like a poncho liner, which was about all the military used in the field in Vietnam and into the 80s and beyond in field exercizes. We were issued sleeping bags, but I can count on one hand how many times we used the issue bag.
It always impresses me when gear from my early childhood is still a reasonable choice. As to the color, I've always liked the color chartreuse, but like you I'm not sure about having it on a sleeping bag.
Thanks for the review, Luke! And thank you for the Sportsman Guide warning also. I always steer clear of them, they are kind of shady with their prices, and I'm always leery of "special membership" prices.
The forest service actually has a lot of cool equipment that has that 1960's Smokey Bear vibe. Some is unique and some is just normal stuff with FS green paint and markings. Problem is they just NEVER seem to surplus it (other than vehicles) so like you just find a piece here and there that was probably obtained by someone that worked there being like, "Don't toss that lantern out, I'll throw it in my truck and take it camping!"
Around here their old trucks and Broncos are a dime a dozen though. Like everyone and their brother has a baby sh&t green Bronco with a white top somewhere on the property!
Yes, his warning regarding Sportsmans guide is warranted. Occasionally there can be a gem amongst the junk, but definitely buyer beware. For example Brooklyn Armed Forces items. Or how they say military style… what is really terrible if what Luke is saying they knowingly sell counterfeit items. That’s when it’s very difficult to tell if you’re really going to or will get item that is legitimate. As everyone should do read reviews on items you find interesting as well look at the questions and answers area. Usually others will blow the whistle on bad products and SG. I sure have. If somethings good I’ll write a review if I find fault in sportsman‘s guide I don’t hold back want to be sure others are warned as well. I’ll even call them up on the phone many times this doesn’t get much change, however occasionally for example they were selling USMC One person LiteFighter tent listed as new never used. Was a fair price at less than $180 for that tent never used, however what I received was clearly used missing components. You could probably still find my reviews on their site regarding that. The good news is within 24 hours they changed the description updating the listing to reflect that it was actually a used item. Still they said it had aluminum poles in one area on the listing and then that they were carbon fiber in another area. Again buyer beware on all online websites read the reviews etc. Thanks Luke for the great content as always! Glad you pointed out the bag on Sportsmans Guide saw that one there over two months ago and questioned how they described it as well the super high price. Keep enjoying the outdoors!
Great video Luke thank you I also bought a supossed military sleeping cot as soon as I opened it uo I knew it wasn't tried to send it back and no response from sg
I purchased some items from Sportsman Guide in the past (mil-surplus) and I can say from first hand experience that you want to avoid the Brooklynn Armed Forces products. They use random NSN's on their labels and give exaggerated tech specs and miss information on the labels i.e. *BAF Military Modular Sleep System*. They claim that their product has the same temp rating as the real MMSS. But... No its just another knock off with potentially dangerous consequences. Such as: If you are taking the BAF sleep system on a winter camping trip and you think you will be fine down to -30F and -50F range but you will quickly find out that the BAF product doesn't get anywhere near those numbers. And it has caused you to be at high risk of exposure and hypothermia. They (sportsman guide and BAF) also sell jackets in *OCP (really in MC) that they claim are made of GORE-TEX. But if you have ever seen or touched anything made of GoreTex and you compare the two fabrics with the BAF brand it is really just a knock off product. Sportsman Guide really pushes BAF in the catalogs and website. Buyer beware!
Pretty good car camping bag, but I think I would just buy something new at walmart. In fact I did recently. I use them as a quilt in the winter and I go through one every couple years. I think I paid 40 dollars for the last one. It's warm and nice. For backpacking I have a duck down bag from walmart which cost 40 dollars at the time and is rated for about 30 degrees. I think it weighs about 2 lbs or something.
Great information! Thanks for telling on the sportsman's guide! After hearing that I won't be supporting them either! Like you the green color is more me. In my sleeping bag I always preferred canvas and I figure that's do to what I grew up with. Thanks for the excellent review and your work on this video as well as all your others.

Master Luke, do you still have your MSS bag and about what would or was the coldest temperatures that you slept in it. Thanks for your videos, I watch them almost every night. You are teaching a 67 year old new ways and things to do. Thanks again. S&H
I know you specialize in backpack camping gear, but wondering if you could dabble in camping for people like me with Grandsons who I am hoping to take camping next summer. Your insights would be so appreciated. Thanks.
How do they get still get away with selling knockoffs?? I thought things like that were supposed too be being clamped down on??? Also, hope you enjoyed your visit with Lucas. 🙏🇬🇧💖
@@benalexander2104 yep in my youth worked as a seasonal bush wacker for the NC Forest service. We did 12 to 16 hours with 8 hours sleep. Didn't need a bag just a woobie and soft ground. Lol
LUKE,i know what you mean about the sportsman guide junk and get this i had moved to a new house after selling my current one and so i went to their website to order ammo and i get this insane message "you cannot order from our website because your address has changed"it directed me to call their support but i never recieved a response nor could i get anyone to change my address manually so i said to my self screw them as i can get all sorts of things from other websites.
"The company reached out and said they were selling counterfeit products." What this company does is wrong but at least they have been honest about it. 😆😆😆
I've had two of these bags, was not a big fan, you can't move around in it, especially if your a 6ft 235lbs human, your constricted, unless your a smaller human, I don't even use mine, it's thrown in a storage bag and on a shelf, till I get rid of it, or if someone needs it to use, it's definitely not a comfortable bag,
@TheOutdoorGearReview Sportsman’s Guide was selling the bag featured in the picture, and it is a Forest Service Bag. It looks just like the photo and is stamped for the forest service. You have the wrong bag in your video. Yours is another variant produced for the forest service. Honestly you should delete this video or fix it.
Well I stopped you, as you said army navy outdoor. I bought two things from them and they sent something from china absolutely garbage. I bought that Czech sleeping system from the sportsman guide that was good and quite a few things from them never had a problem from them.
Hi Off topic, but i would be so grateful. Two things: in general, how can one find the measurements of tent poles, to replace them for cheap? This could be useful to anyone! Now, for me: if anyone knows the measurements of the poles for a rei taj 3 (made in 2006) , and could answer, that would be awesome. I found one for 2 dollars in a thrift store, in very good shape, but no poles… thank you!!!
The white paper ones were great padding. We tried the yellow burritos and really didn't last. The med military mummy bag was great it was cloth and was toasty. Wiggys bags were very popular with the forest service firefighters they are warm and durable.

I remember those, slept on night at 9,000 feet, late season fire near Blackrock Mountain, CA.
These make the best blankets ever
Agree about Sportsmens Guide.
I used to love receiving the SG paper catalogue like 20 years ago when the owner was the spokesman. I guess all things change.

I remember reading that comment! It added to the video, so: thank you!
I've been supporting the channel pretty much as long as they've been using Patreon and never seen my name scroll down so congratulations!
That sounds like a great job
The light colorway also be where it can be spotted easy.
I like the retro look of it and in an emergency situation the high visibility neon could help to be rescued.
Great bag for beginner camper / outdoors .

Sportsmans Guide is exactly what you said.

In 1980s, it was common for sleeping bags to open all the way up into a thick blanket and for being reversible.
Yes, and if weight is not a big issue, say on a canoe trip, that can be a very useful thing.
I like three thing about this and I will be buying one, first the temps it can be used at, second the price, third the color. The Forest Service used to issue paper sleeping bags.
looks similar to snugpak jungle bag. wonder how this compares.
Great sleeping bag. For that price is amazing. My best wishes from Greece
They have back packs other items for living in the woods for a couple weeks.
Thank.you for review on this sleeping bag it looks awesome LUKE
Looks like a great product at a great price. Would be affordable for a family who likes to camp but are on a budget.
Thanks for the info on Sportsman's Guide. I was suspicious but have not bought anything from them so far... looks like I never will
I wonder if the yellow color is also for visibility since they use to sleep in random places you could spot them easier.
US Forest Service also has their own Tents
The lime green or yellow volor is so they can lay them out for recognition in tge event they have to have aircraft do a water drop close to them or if they get turned around and need to be evacuated
Nice ! I have one ! 1988 is when I got my bag looks exactly the same as the one that you are showing. It's always worked great for me ! This was really cool to see you review this !! Thanks for sharing this with us 👍👍😎

SG used to be amazing. They were the place to go for surplus stuff 25 years ago. 10-15 years ago they went to crap.
Agree with you about SW. After multiple attempts to purchase from them and product not available or was trash I had them remove me from mailing list. Promptly threw away all catalogs.
The zipper arrangement on this bag allows you to zip two bags together and have a double bag for two people. Stay well and be safe.
From what you've said (& you have no idea how many $ your reviews have saved me) I will definitely be picking one of these up Thanks for the video & thanks to whoever sent it to you !!
The lemon lime bag….👍
good 2 know
thanks
I'm not hating it...But I do love my Modular system...
$50.00 ...Not complaining...

I bought a Modular Sleep System last year. Got sick of cheap commercial bags that never performed like they advertised and always left me cold. Yeah, it's a little bulky and heavy, but for truck camping it's just perfect. And I can take just the components I need so it typically won't be the full bulk or weight.

@@chalion8399 With a quality 75L pack, I generally am not concerned about the extra bulk. I can fit so much stuff in it and still have extra space.

lovely sleeping bag and the colour combo is fabulous.

Same here. Had it bookmarked along with a couple other things from their store. Deleted it all after watching this review.

Agreed
It always impresses me when gear from my early childhood is still a reasonable choice. As to the color, I've always liked the color chartreuse, but like you I'm not sure about having it on a sleeping bag.
Just curious, why is it still a reasonable choice?
The more you know. It makes sense the US Forestry Service would have sleep systems. Never thought about it until now.
Thanks for the review, Luke! And thank you for the Sportsman Guide warning also. I always steer clear of them, they are kind of shady with their prices, and I'm always leery of "special membership" prices.

i like the color and i like the price :) thanks for doing a review about this sleeping bag :) S&H BRO :)
@1:43 thats what i always tell my wife.
I'd almost say kelly green
I would have to test this out before I said anything
Anyone thought of something else when you saw the thumbnail? I did until I realised it was a sleeping bag about a second later.
How do they get still get away with selling knockoffs?? I thought things like that were supposed too be being clamped down on???
Also, hope you enjoyed your visit with Lucas. 🙏🇬🇧💖

I guess no one here is shopping at the Sportsman Guide! Lol
Notification gang report in
As a professional firefighter we generally don't us sleeping bags when fighting fire. To big to heavy and to bulky. But nice bag.
Too hot too I guess? And you'd need some kind of hose hole through the back and front too. Wildly impractical if you ask me 🤷
@@benalexander2104 yep in my youth worked as a seasonal bush wacker for the NC Forest service.
"The company reached out and said they were selling counterfeit products."
What this company does is wrong but at least they have been honest about it. 😆😆😆
Great review, was the bag you showed new or used ?
Tennier, the company who makes this sleeping bag wants $150.00 per bag (NEW) !
I've had two of these bags, was not a big fan, you can't move around in it, especially if your a 6ft 235lbs human, your constricted, unless your a smaller human, I don't even use mine, it's thrown in a storage bag and on a shelf, till I get rid of it, or if someone needs it to use, it's definitely not a comfortable bag,
@TheOutdoorGearReview
Sportsman’s Guide was selling the bag featured in the picture, and it is a Forest Service Bag. It looks just like the photo and is stamped for the forest service. You have the wrong bag in your video. Yours is another variant produced for the forest service. Honestly you should delete this video or fix it.
I had issues with sportsmans guide. I will never buy from them again
It would work great for me- I only care about a car camping.
strange colors and its just not the same as my 1989-1995 USGI sleeping bag. I am sure it is way lighter
Hi from Syracuse NY brother thank you for sharing your adventures
$120 on sportsman’s guide.
That doesn't seem very warm--especially in high country. Might work for slumber parties.
IMO, that's extremely heavy & bulky for a synthetic bag of that rating.
Well I stopped you, as you said army navy outdoor. I bought two things from them and they sent something from china absolutely garbage.
I bought that Czech sleeping system from the sportsman guide that was good and quite a few things from them never had a problem from them.
....GOOD ONE, KEEP SAFE AND COMFY...LOL..
1st Badger 👏👍😎
Hi
Off topic, but i would be so grateful.
Sportsman's Guide has a terrible business practice. I don't shop there anymore.
Let's play a game called, "Is Luke on Lone Wolf Mountain."
Today's answer is yes.
1980 Old?? Come on Bro, That was the year I went to basic training.
