Luke once again you amazed us with your honest reviews. We bought the Ridgelight and because you gave it such great reviews we had to wait to get it lol. The company gave you credit for the great review as they should. They gave us the Carabiners for free. My friend I'm a Veteran and your Strength and Honor motto is spot on. We live in Greeley Colorado and we are hoping to meet you some day,it would be a honor for us. Because of your adventures and reviews we go camping a lot more and we have bought equipment you have recommended. Thank you for what you do and keep up the good work. No mission to difficult, no sacrifice to great, Duty first. Big Red One motto
Melvin, former Army Vet here in Denver too! We should get some other co fans of Luke's together for when he does come through again, be great to meet up and hang with like minded individuals!
To all of our heroic vets and their families, a very heartfelt thank you for your service! The proud daughter of a WWII Navy man and granddaughter (both side’s) of WWI Navy man and Army cook! Frances
@@MakeMoreMusicOk thanks you. It was a honor and a privilege to have served. My oath of defending the constitution from all enemies foreign and domestic has no expiration date.
I have an Exped mattress, if you fold it in quarters, squeezing the air out as you fold first, then roll it, so much easier and will roll up smaller every time. I would also ditch the pillow bag and let it lay flat against the mattress in the bag 👍
I just got one of those during the REI 20% off for members sale! I'm really looking forward to taking out my MegaMat10, as a cold sleeper I have really needed to upgrade for a while now. Here's hoping that I can start getting to the outdoors a little more now.
Qomotop used to produce these for Amazon, they've since stopped. We bought 2 2 years ago and the most comfortable mattress ever, truly! They were roughly half the price though of the Soto version. Great pads, slept on them down to -10, with a top quilt!
Hey, I have a similar product from a company called Outwell. The trick to expelling all the air and getting it rolled up super tight is to roll it up (exactly as you did in your vid), then unroll it again (with the valve remaining closed so air can't get in) and repeat the rolling process to squeeze out more air. The first roll doesn't get out all the air
I really appreciate you showing how you roll and store the bag. That's a previous comment I left on some other video reviews about tarps/tents/sleeping pads, etc... Thanks!
Have an Exped Megamat and Zempire Monstamat that are similar (cheaper though). Easiest way to get any of them rolled up is the 'Exped way' ie roll into thirds, body weight to squeeze majority of air out. Then roll how you did it with the knees. Most are one easy valves. Exped and Zempire of ours roll down small and with room to spare in their bags.
On Amazon for $274 you can get a Thermorest mono king 3-D mattress. It comes with a self inflating bag and a repair kit and the Stuff sack is also your inflator. This mattress has a 9R value. I’ve used this once and it was very comfortable. However, if you put a silver close Cell foam pad underneath it, it will slide around on that. Comparing the two prices for an extra 20 some dollars you can get this DOD mattress. I agree that the price of the DOD could be cheaper but so could the Thermorest mattress. Thank you for the review I will keep it in mind if I need to purchase another one.
We have an Exped megamat duo and it’s as comfortable as our mattress at home. We learnt the hard way with other lesser mattress/sleeping pads before we got to the Exped. With an R value of 8.1 we have never felt cold from below. The pillow and it’s ability to pump up the mattress is a great idea. We have the same struggle to compress the mattress after use but it’s still worth the effort, a good nights sleep is priceless.
I have the megamat too and I agree that’s it’s great. I believe it’s less expensive than this one. I found the deflation easier than what I see him doing, I just store it in half up in my iKamper mini. I removed the iKamper foam mattress and put in carpet.
Looks like an excellent addition to my "must have" equipment list. I was waiting to hear your review on this, but the big thing was the dimensions. My 7x14 enclosed is be configured with XL Disc-O-Bed bunks (1 set) and a Disc-O-Bed trundle single. These will fit the bunks just perfectly. My wife tried the trundle and didn't like the way it sagged, so I have been looking for a mattress/inflatable sleep pad to put on top. These are expensive for my budget, but I have three people to include myself to keep comfortable and rested. So I will figure a way to pull the trigger on them, if even if I have to spread out the purchases over a few months. Thanks for another excellent product review.
Hi Luke hope you're very well!!!.....I'm very impressed with that system, However....I think they would sell many more if the price were HALF. Everything you said about the kit seems correct and I would purchase one in a heartbeat if NOT for the High cost But I'm just one voice....looking forward to more reviews and camping, in the meantime stay well
I don’t have this sleep pad. I have a kamp something sleep pad. But this one looks great. You would expect this to be used for car camping. Plus it’s quite expensive. One only suggestion is broth Luke should announce his height and weight when doing these demos. He’s a short-petite guy. I’m 6’3” 225lbs.
I love to get out there and camp or just the nature during the day. It's nice to get far out there in the woods. I really appreciated all the information and I'll continue to think about it. You may have sold me.
I’d lose the cap for the pillow unless I put it in the case . Looks nice but does seem a bit high . Zipper on the mattress bag won’t last long at that rate. Since it has a one way valve , if you couldn’t re-roll it and get more air out . Have some old Tex-Sport that similar but much older . Definitely a pain to roll . Thanks for the review
I have an REI Camp Dreamer XL mattress that is half the price as this, same thickness, a big wider and shorter, and a less comfortable round pillow that doubles as an inflator. It has the exact same one-way valve, less R value but still very warm in cold weather. It's about 6 lbs. This is probably the closest mattress to the Soto one in terms of design and sizing. I have been using it for the last 2 years on a daily basis - when not camping I use it for naps. The reviews on REI were not that great. Most complained about the valve being short-lived. I have my fingers crossed. Hopefully I can still use it for a couple more years.
I can make roll up a little easier. Open valve. Lay on it flat to push out some air. Fold in half and lay on it again to push out a second amount of air. Then do the roll method last. It goes much easier.
Ive just received my large version. Extremely impressed with the quality. Huge difference between japanese and chinese build quality. Its the exact width of a twin but a bit longer. The price on the large was $400 cad. $100 of that was shipping because it comes straight from Japan and it came in 3 days. So $300cad for a large is definitely worth it.
if you turn the valve so its neither on inflate or deflate the hole is much larger and makes getting the air out so much easier. as seen in the pillow at 1m.17s
Japanese and Korean camping equipment is of incredible variety, quality and style . The quantity of brands, the products they offer is just unseen in Europe, America, Australia or South Africa . We may see virtually one or two variations of pop-up instants pop ups, they have dozens from two to six pax, shelter or full tents with dozens combinations and or customisation Same with pop up like Gazelle , or car tents , dozens of types They also camp differently : often use shelters with or without partial inner tents. I like their fireplace and cooking style as well
@@Toubabouit also looks cooler. I bought a dod hexa tarp that's all black and it is beautiful. I copied another campsite . They were Japanese and had all Japanese gear that they don't sell in the U.S. Snowpeak, DOD and some other stuff that are Japan exclusive or not in the U.S. They had the most pristine cleanest site at that campground.
I bought the poor mans version of this mattress, a Lost Horizon. It was a HUGE upgrade from our old Coleman air mattress which failed on us twice. As far as deflating it, I also bought the Lost Horizon air pump since you can hook it up and suck the air out. It will get much smaller and easier to roll up as you do.

I'll stick with my Exped down-filled pad, thanks. Much lighter, much more compact and has an R rating of 9. As a 4 season camper, it has never let me down in sub-freezing temps.
Here in the uk I had a KAMPA LUXURY 10CM SELF INFLATING MAT - XL,be interesting to see a comparison because the kampa is only £65 and so luxurious, but, too bulky, has same valves, but two so it seems easier to inflate, deflate too.
I have the Hikenture pad with a 9.5R value... and it's even more comfortable than my bed at home! But it's a bum that I can't use it for backpacking. Knee rolling is a must, and I had to do it at least two time since I'm about 100lb...in the process to look for something that's more portable but similar (don't like those plastic inflatables!)
I won a very similar mattress from HeyTrip in a photo contest, pretty much same size, same exact valve, and it is so comfy and warm, it's also about $120. I have since switched to a DeepSleep mattress which is essentially the same comfy and warm self inflating foam, just shaped to fit in the back of a vehicle.
This blew my mind that this is pretty much the exact same design as my wife and I's sleeping pads. The name of ours is Qomotop. They are very nice and comfortable and have the same coin inflate and deflate system. I recommend them to everyone that asks about them. I am a side sleeper and can confirm that I'm very comfortable and don't feel a thing below me. Another great review Luke!
Looks like a great product. For that price I might almost prefer it over the luxury blow up mattresses for a travel bed, extra bed for people who come over, etc.
It's easier to roll it up if you lay on it and roll yourself across it first. I have a DX Thermarest (unfortunately without a oneway valve) that I just unscrew the cap, lay on it until it's mostly deflated, then roll it up. It's probably fun to watch me pull this off because it takes some pretty quick maneuvering so it doesn't re-inflate! The other con I see is the same one I have with the Thermarest, you shouldn't store it for any long period with it totally compressed, so finding a place to keep it can get interesting. I've had mine inflated for about 7 years leaning against the space behind my closet door and in all that time it has barely lost any air whatsoever.
Hope this comment finds you and your beloved well. I do think it is cost prohibitive for many, but as a Healthcare Provider nothing replaces a good sleep. Price is certainly a thing, but the cost of a bad night(s) sleep is even higher. Much Success to you both.
Intersting design. I have an Oztrail. I find that if I fold in half first to get most of the air out before I start rolling. I like the one way valve. Mine I have to open and close the valve as I'm trying to deflate it. I also don't just use my knees. I use my whole body to try and get the air out of it. I've had some strange looks while I'm crawling and bouncing around trying to roll it up. There's always that secret win feeling you get when you get them in the stupidly small bags. You can celebrate because all you want to do is collapse after fighting with a mattress
I have a similar pad and found that if I roll it up, unroll it and roll it again it fits in the bag better. With that being said- they are awesome sleeping pads.
I have a similar mattress... when packing it away, I find it's a lot easier if you plan to do so in more than one go. That is, instead of working hard to get all the air out in one pass, simply not try as hard but with the valve still in the closed/exhale position, unroll it and wrap it up again. On the second time around, getting the rest of the air out will be a lot easier (because it will be much less bulky).
This looks similar to Term a Rest MondoKing 3D XXL version but without the pillow. I'd really like to compare to this, i'm planning to get one before the camping season in spring and summer.
There are a few others out there with similar constructions. They all boast similar comfort and warmth. They might be a way to coax a special someone that won't go car camping with you. They won't even fit in a backpack or kayak hatch.
Looks like my perfect sleeping system for ultralight set up! Kidding, but it does look amazing for car camping and camping where you don’t hike far. And would excel as a impromptu guest bed.
Could you use the bag compression straps before zippering? You'd have to work the zipper under it...... I have a similar REI pad. Very hard to fit in the bag. Your knee tip is spot on.
Very similar to the REI Dreamer XL I bought a couple years ago for 149.99. R value was 6.6. Wonder why this one is double the price. Inflation maybe? I do like that it comes with the fitted sheet and pillow case. At the time of me posting this, all 3 sizes are unavailable through the amazon link you have in the description. I'm a gear junkie unfortunately and Im always looking at something interesting to buy. The Japanese, South Korean and Chinese camping products are interesting when they are the high quality products.
Thanks Luke! I watch these videos on a Roku which doesn't seem to give the option to give thumbs up so I try to go find the video on my phone to do it. Anyhow, I have a similar mattress, did not come with the cool accessories though. I find it to be very comfortable like a real bed. Its my go to unless the weight or size is an issue. I recently bought an REI Helix lightweight air pad for backpacking. It is comfortable for a lightweight air mattress and r value is 4.9 but I question durability. It was new this year and I would love you to review it but they already discontinued it. Maybe that gives me my answer...
For overnight trips something like this might be considered out of budget. For a multi-day or multi-week trip good restful sleep is Critical! If you have to spend a nite in a hotel/motel because you are exhausted that is lost time and money you can't get back. Good sleep is the most important thing for a Safe and Enjoyable day!
I think I will stick with my Exped Megamat 12 lite. The R value is a little less (5.8) Pad is 30x80. Just watching you roll that pad up scared me. The price is a little crazy too.
I have the Teton base mat on my van bed and over a two year period I has become compressed mainly around the hip area. I am looking for a good replacement and you just reviewed what I need. Lol. Right on time, Luke. Thanks!. $300 is worth it for the comfort alone. Soto products are not cheap but quality is worth the price...you get what you pay for.
Great review and nice to hear that it's well insulated and comfortable also great how you also list the cons honestly so people can make an informed choice. Strength and honor. 👍

wow the mattress looks wonderful love that you get a pillow and sheets how cool is that even looks comfy, it would be nice if it was a bit more affordable though and the bag larger. Thank you Luke appreciate the review. Ontario
Ahhh you're killin' me Luke haha....another DOD product before the tipi tent test night? Okay okay, I can say this for DOD, the high prices seem justified. Bought my tipi tent and gave it a once over (not taking it out until the test night so I know what to expect) and it seems VERY well made. If I was in the market for a mattress, I would buy this even at that price without a second thought.
It looks pretty dang comfortable, but for $300 and that pack size! Even car camping in a small SUV with anyone more than yourself and it would take up a lot of space.
'to heavy for hikers and too pricey. It does look great and it looks like good quality and may be the quality is what you have to trade-off for the price. Thanks for the video it really showed how great this is .
I had to laugh, when I saw DoD I thought this was a Department of Defence army surplus kit review. Nice bit of kit, but just too mega big for my use. I did have an idea for putting it away in the bag.. Put it in the bag, then use the compression straps before starting the zip. Then zip up to the first strap, unclip, zip a bit more and repeat. That might help.
Nice and well reviewed. I agree that the quality seems like it is good based on this video. I also feel that a $300.00 price is quite high and likely out of reach for many outdoors enthusiasts. More like the $200 range per person for the single small bed plus pillow would be OK.
As always such an honest review of this. I would have to aagree that the price for this item is rather high by my opinion atleast 100$, i can see paying around 200 for this quality of comfort. Now as far as deflating it, in my experience with similar style/type of mattresses or sleeping pads if you roll out the air the first time unroll it and do a second rolling deflate, that somehow seems to get out just that extra bit of air that can make a huge difference in getting it back in the pack easy or slightly not so easy.
This is exactly the same as the UST Fillmatic only it also has a cool pump sack/pillow. I’m not sure it’s worth the price jump from the UST, but it’s very nice. My wife uses the UST and it is EXTREMELY comfortable.
On the roll up, it’s MUCH easier to have the valve fully opened and do a quick initial roll to get the majority of the air out. Then set the valve to deflate and do it again. It’s easier to get it significantly tighter on the first attempt.
Luke I like the product you presented, but the price for me is way over the top for foreign made products I would expect that price somewhat if it was made here in the states DOD equipment is nice but only remains on a wish list for most because of the expense.
There are very similar mats available that are lighter and cheaper (without ordering from China) but I don't own any of them or the dod so I can't say as to wether it's worth the money or not . I can however go get one a 5 minute drive from home for less than half the price .
I really love DOD products. I ordered the Ichi One Pole M based on your review without even waiting for the rain test. It's fantastic, although I've only put it up once to make sure all the bits are present. Very easy setup and it's massive. All the seams are taped. Exceptional quality for the price. I just ordered a Sugoi chair, too. This mattress is out of my price range. If it was a bit less expensive, I'd bite.
Very cool design for using the pillow as an inflation tool for the main mattress. It looks really nice. And for that price, I would expect nothing less than max comfort. Definitely an investment, but a nice product. Thanks again for the nice show and tell.

They are very nice and comfortable and have the same coin inflate and deflate system. I recommend them to everyone that asks about them. I am a side sleeper and can confirm that I'm very comfortable and don't feel a thing below me. Another great review Luke!
Luke For Me 300 Is Steep But It Looks Like A Nice Bed Thank You For Great Demo❤
Good afternoon from Syracuse NY brother
wow what a creative design
Could't you use a inflate/deflate pump since you use mostly when you have your truck to carry extra equiptment
Well you get what you paid for in most cases ends up a good investment..
This looks similar to Term a Rest MondoKing 3D XXL version but without the pillow. I'd really like to compare to this, i'm planning to get one before the camping season in spring and summer.
I think around 250 would be the most id pay for it, theres always the exped megamat as well. But the quality is undeniable!
There are a few others out there with similar constructions. They all boast similar comfort and warmth.
They might be a way to coax a special someone that won't go car camping with you.
They won't even fit in a backpack or kayak hatch.
Thanks Luke
It’s expensive, but it does look great…Soto is a great brand.
Looks like my perfect sleeping system for ultralight set up!
Kidding, but it does look amazing for car camping and camping where you don’t hike far. And would excel as a impromptu guest bed.
Decathlon has a nearly identic matress with R9.7 for 99€ in europe. You could try to get your hands on that one too.
Hey man great video as usual
I think it would be easier if you first close the compression straps and then zip it up
For overnight trips something like this might be considered out of budget.
Excellent review . Thank you .
Great review and nice to hear that it's well insulated and comfortable also great how you also list the cons honestly so people can make an informed choice. Strength and honor. 👍
Next compare the Exped Megamat 10 vs 15 and tell us which is the best bang for buck/comfort for base car camping
Sleep is Vital to Survival, as is maintaining Body Heat whilst Sleeping and remember One Third of your Day will have a Huge Impact upon the other Two Thirds. Sure you can go with Cheaper and many people will, but a Price will be Paid and that Price isn’t always measured in Dollars.
Ah...the old "knee trick." I've used it on other inflatables that I need to roll/fold into small volumes. As always, I appreciate your candid reviews.
wow the mattress looks wonderful love that you get a pillow and sheets how cool is that even looks comfy, it would be nice if it was a bit more affordable though and the bag larger.
The Exped Megamat 10 seems to do the same thing for less $$ and weight , though it is still too heavy and bulky to carry it on your back.
I have a similar mattress. To begin deflating, I fold it in half and lay on it. It gets about 75% of the air out then I start rolling.
It looks pretty dang comfortable, but for $300 and that pack size! Even car camping in a small SUV with anyone more than yourself and it would take up a lot of space.
That looks great, high dollar but worth it! What about a patch kit just in case??! Thx for review!
PS, I always do at least two passes to get the air out of my similar air mattress. Works like a charm.
Looks amazing, but that pillow is a lot thinner than I'm used to. I'd probably need to put a jacket or something over it to bulk it up.
Thanks for the info. Having spinal problems I need a comfortable ER mattress. Be kind to each other. Stay safe. Love to all
As always such an honest review of this.
Sometimes, you get what you pay for! Another great review
Looks amazing and comfy! Price is high but storage size seems like the bigger con.
$80-100 of that cost is shipping in there as they ship straight from Japan.
Please compare to the exped megamat if possible. They seem like very comparable products.
Can you flip the valve on the pillow and use it to remove the air from the mat? That might make it easier to roll and stow.
I wonder if, once you roll it up, open it and roll it a 2nd time. I think you can get it compressed more that way.
Luke I like the product you presented, but the price for me is way over the top for foreign made products I would expect that price somewhat if it was made here in the states DOD equipment is nice but only remains on a wish list for most because of the expense.
was going to use this for a stealth camp but apparently you can see this from space lol
Just got 30% off with soto30, but expires very, very soon.
When debating mattress maybe keeping that valve at half open will help when rolling it up ..seems like it's restricting the amount of exiting air??
Very cool design for using the pillow as an inflation tool for the main mattress. It looks really nice. And for that price, I would expect nothing less than max comfort. Definitely an investment, but a nice product. Thanks again for the nice show and tell.
It's really cool but that weight would kill me for hiking. But man, this is pretty sweet for other environments and uses
