  • Transform Your Bar Stool Seat With Renee Romeo's Easy Step-by-step Reupholstering Guide!
This video addresses how to reupholster a bar stool seat. I like to call this video step two in the journey of learning the nuances of upholstery. You may wish to start with 'How to reupholster a simple footstool' and then view this tutorial. Here, I show you how to sew a straight line and then introduce how to sew on a curve. Don't worry. I break the process down into manageable steps and show you EXACTLY how I reupholstered all SIX of mine.
    It's an incredible transformation!
I have to confess that I would rather buy the appropriate bar stool - with the right styling, comfort, luxurious fabric and price point. This combination is usually elusive to me and I find myself taking things apart time and time again to get exactly what I want. It's how I manage to infuse designer features into my interior spaces without paying designer prices. Let's face it, you don't have to purchase a bunch of fabric to recover a bar stool so you're allowed to splurge a little. I am using a high quality velvet fabric with a luxurious touch.
See the before and after at the end of the video.
I invest only one hour of time per bar stool. It seems incredible that I can finish all six stools in one single day. If you follow along with me, you can expect similar results. I don't use fancy tools. You should have all the equipment you need in your tool chest. Many of you have asked about my heavy duty sewing machine. I don't believe it's a must for completing this project. I have sewn many upholstery projects together with my household machine - it just takes a technique that I share with you in the middle of the video.

Super helpful! I've been wanting to recover my stools for a while. Thanks! A seam ripper tip: if you flip it over and put the red ball side down, it helps to keep the fabric separated so the blade can cut and prevents the pointy end from piercing the fabric.

Dorian Roberts, Thank you for the nice compliment AND the super tip! I'm not sure if I ever noticed what direction I had the ball end facing but since I never took the time to think about it, I'm sure half the time I've been using my seam ripper upside down. This is exactly what this DIY channel is all about - sharing ideas that work. Thank you for sharing!! Have fun with your project too. Your stools are going to look great! Renee

Oh, by the way, I did finally find an apron that I love. Went to a friend of mine the other day and she had the greatest apron in the world, it is short and has 18 (I think)pockets also has two, one on each side pocket you can use to hang your staple gun or hammer from. I found it on amazon it is made by NO CRY, it is made of canvas and is double seemed all around, has back strap so the weight of whatever you carry doesn't fall forward when climbing a ladder or whatever also has around the neck pads it is comfortable and not bulky. The price was $14.00. Yay, now I can be comfortable and safe and NO back or neck pain.

    Hi Renee,
Thanks for you great video. I am trying to recover three old bar stool seats that are not as fancy as yours as no sewing i. Loved. They just are pulled over one inch foam that I am replacing as well. I am actually putting on marine grade vinyl as the surface needs to endure spills from our kitchen and we have no inside pets. Can you please direct me to a video for mine? I really appreciate ball your wonderful insights.
    Happy Holidays,
    Susan

First attempt at redoing barstool seats. Vinyl mt'l. Q: Can I just leave the old material in place and cover over without causing a problem? Would you do such?

    • @ReneeRomeo
      @ReneeRomeo  3 роки тому +1

James, Excellent question! It's possible to leave the existing fabric in place but it's a much better fitting job and necessary to take at least one apart for pattern making. Also, the fabric tends to wear out a little quicker if you leave the existing fabric in place because the two fabrics will rub together every time someone sits on them. It's just an FYI... All the best with your project, Renee

HI Renee , can you tell me where you got that counter bar tool and who I can take it to to put the fabric i want on it in Los Angeles. Thanks

Hi Kate, I got the stool at Pier One (I think they're all out of business now) and (if you find one and don't want to do this yourself), you can just look for a reupholstery shop near you to do the work. Best of luck, Renee

Do you know with velvet if you have pets that shed you can take a damp clean cloth and run the damp cloth over the material and wala, pet hair comes right off onto the damp cloth. It can only be damp, not real wet or it may stain. This video reminds me when I sewed my sleeve into the fabric once, I no longer wear long sleeves when I sew or at least I can roll up my sleeves. I love the look of your stools that are handsome.

Nancy, I love the damp cloth idea. I perform that duty almost daily on our kitty tree so why not on the velvet too?
I'm always hoping for a funny blooper like that too - the sleeve fashions today are great for that - it's probably just a matter of time.😜
