  • In this easy DIY video, we'll teach you how to add foam to a plain wooden barstool and upholster it with quality vinyl fabric. Our DIY method creates a beautiful topstitch along the top and bottom of the stool. Plus, our clever design eliminates those annoying wrinkles on the underside of the stool that have to be stretched and stapled flat. Let's get started on this easy upholstery DIY.

    I often need to slip covers over foam, and as you say, they can be a little stubborn. I use a very fine plastic similar to "Saran Wrap" to facilitate the process. The plastic is called "silk wrap" and is a big help. Your videos are excellent and have helped me with a wide variety of projects.

    Another great video! Just curious, though - i would have thought that since you cut the banding with a half inch overlap, the seam allowance should have been 1/4". Is that to keep the banding snug? And would that work with a non-stretch fabric?
    Thanks!

    • @SailriteDIY
      @SailriteDIY  Рік тому

      Thanks!!! Yes, we want the banding to be slightly smaller in height (after sewing) to keep it snug for a better tight fitting look. Yes, it should also work for a non-4 way stretch vinyl seating fabric as well.

  • @rockshot100
    @rockshot100 4 місяці тому +1

    Great tips, but don't you need to drill a hole or two in the bottom of the stool to allow the air to escape? Otherwise it would be hell on those seams? Beautiful job.

    Did you use a special sewing machine?? I have a regular sewing machine like the one that your mom would use when you were a kid... I have five bar stools that I bought with a round bar that has the looks of a bop belie stove. Great video, WOW, learned ALOT.

    • @SailriteDIY

      Yes, we used a Sailrite Ultrafeed LSZ Sewing Machine found here: www.sailrite.com/Sailrite-Ultrafeed-LSZ-Walking-Foot-Sewing-Machine-110V However, a home sewing machine may still work for this type of application. It always depends on the quality and working order of the home sewing machine you own (so it varies greatly from machine to machine). To determine if a home sewing machine can sew thicker fabrics perform this test:
      Cut up a pair of old blue jeans into four layers (not including the jean’s hems). Since a home sewing machine usually can’t handle a thread larger than v-69 (Tex 70) use something comparable and try to sew through the 4 layers of blue jean material. If it sews well and the stitch looks good on the top and bottom side of the assembly then chances are you can use your home sewing machine for small to medium jobs.

      Thank you for your time. I will try what you suggested with blue jeans. Thank you again.@@SailriteDIY

    I have a very cheap music stool with a tall side wall and very little foam. I want to add 2 inch foam, which would make a 6 inch sidewall. Would this process still work well? I'm guessing it would.

      It may be challenging to feed the seating vinyl, but yes if your home sewing machine works well it may be possible.
