To answer your question from the beginning of this video, one of the main reason people yell when they fight is it reminds them to breathe. You would be amazed how many people hold their breath when they fight so making noises is a great way of reminding yourself to expel air.

That is NOT the actual reason at all. The use of your vocal exhale, is not just about breathing out. Its a combination of a perfectly timed breath, synced with your bodies precision movement.. AND the precise timing of the Tightening of the Abdomen, and other Internal Muscles. The result, is a much Stronger Structure on Impact.. which can deliver a much more powerful Blow.
The think is... is that you can do a similar thing, without making as much noise. The sound of the air is still very Loud compared to normal breathing... but its far less loud than this screaming.

Awesome that you watched this Vanessa. Jean Claude movies are a part of my childhood and teenage years. Modern fight movies just can't capture the same feel as the 80s-90s. There's a certain campiness, cheesiness and awesomeness to them. You should definitely do more Jean Claude movies and more 80s martial arts movies in general. Definitely Chuck Norris. Some of my favorites:
Cyborg (1989)- Jean Claude kicks butt in a post apocalyptic future
Silent Rage (1982) Chuck Norris vs Michael Myers
Ninja 3 The Domination (1984)- Evil ninja possess hot woman to take vengeance on killers
Firewalker (1986) Chuck Norris as low budget Indian Jones
Nowhere to Run (1993)- Jean Claude escapes from prison and helps hot widow

When Chung-Li (played by Bolo Yeung) says "bricks don't hit back" it's a call back (and a tribute I guess) to the movie "Enter the dragon" where Bolo played opposite Bruce Lee, and it was a line from Bruce Lee's character about boards, after his opponent broke one before fight to intimidate him.

Mortal Kombat was suppose to be a Van Damme game after the success of this movie. Van Damme inspired the Johnny Cage character (You see the split punch to the balls scene just like Johnny Cage). You should see other martial arts by Van Dame and others. Van Damme movies like Kickboxer , Double Impact ,Cyborg, Lion Heart, Universal Solider, TimeCop. Especially I highly recommand you see "No Retrat No Surrender" (Van Damm is the bad guy in it) which is a kind of Karate Kid movie with much better fights. The "haiyaa" also know as a Kiai serves several purposes.
1, it's a way to remember to breathe. Believe it or not it's very easy to hold your breath during a fight, so yelling (an exhale) reminds the body to take a breath.
2, it actually makes punches and kicks harder. by expanding blood vessels and tensing up muscles.
3, it's intimidating, who wants to fight a yelling maniac?
4, it encourages the release of adrenaline

Hong Kong law and police did not apply and there was no Chinese law enforcement. It was a world of brothels, gambling dens, and the cramped sunless rooms of the displaced. In the years following the film's release, some began to doubt Frank Dux's claims, including the producer Sheldon Lettich, who was among the first to begin investigating whether Dux's story was indeed true. What Lettich, and several others over the intervening years, found was that there is simply no evidence that the Kumite Dux described even existed, or that he ever took part in such an event. Furthermore, nobody has ever been able to verify the existence of Senzo Tanaka, Dux's alleged sensei, while his claims about his military record also cannot be proven

If he fought in a dozen tournaments, and each tournament was at least five rounds, he could have theoretically KO'd 50+ people over the course of a dozen tournaments (assuming that he never lost a fight).

Thank you Vanessa for starting on reacting to Jean Claude Van Damme. He was my favorite right after Schwarzenegger and Stallone. Now that you're finally reacting to him, may I suggest of watching some of his more sci-fi action film. The sci-fi action films that I recommend are Cyborg, Universal Soldier, and Timecop.

:) This movie was definitely a childhood fave of mine. I watched this as a youngster and immediaetely became a fan of Jean Claude Van Damne. This movie's so much fun to watch!! xD Seeing Frank win his fights is always fun and watching his buddy Jackson win his fights or just be himself throughout the movie was always fun as well. :) lol, and of course, since I watched this as a boy I imagined myself fighting/training for the Kumite. hahahaha, fun childhood! :)
Your reaction to this was a blast to see! I love watching reactions to movies from my childhood for this reason. lol, especially when the reactor is surprised by the violence/action. :P I'm tempted to subscribe to your Patreon so I can watch the full reaction. I'll take a look at your other content and see if there are many others that interest me.

    Hola , 👊 Kapow!!! Show us your moves Vanessa 🤩 🐉 🎬
" Teach me I can do it" Frank Dux
A Breakthrough Cult Classic , Van Damme at he's Prime , like lighting with those kicks. This was a fan favourite we rewinded & paused alot back in the day trying to copy the different fighting styles , his signature splits are Rad , the highest number in any of his movies. I like how well the Action scenes were executed. It does have cheesy b - movie vibes & the acting leaves a lot to be desired but I don't mind its still entertaining & there's nothing like a 80s training montage. Tanaka (who was also in enter the dragon) was a great character with his backstory about the war , I really liked the scenes with frank wanting to honour his mentor by entering the tournament , it would've been even better if they fought side by side in a scene like I've seen in other martial arts movies. The blur effect with the camera was used alot back then. Your right about the flashback , the younger frank wasn't very convincing & stiff , how did he make through the audition but it is cannon films after all. Hong Kong's a great setting with its views that goes back to when Bruce Lee filmed there. When it came to the love interest with Janice , they didn't waste any time , she didn't have much of a role.Having a tournament provides a fascinating backdrop to the story , the Kowloon walled city was where the fighting took place & was rife with corruption & was one of the most densely populated places on earth.
You know who's the Bad guy is when he tastes his own blood , Chong Li was played by Bolo yeung who got his big break in enter the dragon & doesn't seem to have aged a bit. There's a throwback line " but brick not hit back " when Frank destroys the bricks , like when a opponent breaks a board in Bruce Lee's face. No matter how funny there forced faces are there's a good reason for it , it's called Kiai it's when you forcefully expell air from your lungs using your abdomen , try breathing out as fast as you can & your feel your abdomen tense up , it makes you more resistant to punches & exhaling increases your speed , it's also sometimes used to intimidate & enhance your fighting spirit.
The final showdown was awesome & didn't disappoint with the roundkicks & close ups , Chong Li mocking him after putting Ray in hospital makes kicking his ass extra satisfying , it's amazing moment when Frank's temporary blinded & his lessons from Tanaka come into play , so intense , any action in slow motion is always cool . A great triumph & feel good ending .🥋💥🥇
I wasn't sure if you were gonna be into it , I'm sure Van Damme looks & charms ha had nothing to do with it , it did pave the way along with kickboxer turning JCVD into a star , other moves to check out include Lionheart , Scfi thrillers universal soldier ( that also has Dolph Lundgren) & timecop , hard target , twin bros in double impact , sudden death fighting bad guys during a ice hockey game & romantic action drama nowhere to run with the funny restaurant scene if I recall right. I'll include some interesting trivia like always.
    Muchas Gracias , I'll send around 25 soon , I'm happy your in good spirits , have a wonderful week , Cuidate Adiós Vanessa 😄 🍿🧡 🖐️

The use of a very vocal exhale, is not just about breathing out, as someone had posted.
The sound of the large volume of air movement, is still very Loud compared to normal breathing... but its far less loud than this screaming. Typically, the Chinese arts do not tend to Yell their Attacks as much... As that tends to be more of a Japanese thing. But the very deep and loud breathing, is certainly used in the Chinese arts. Im a Masterclass level fighter, trained in the Chinese arts... with 30 years of hardcore experience.
This movie is pretty Cheesy... Especially the Obsessive use of Splits. And yeah... the facial expressions are pretty funny, and often way too over-done. The martial arts in this film, are also pretty awful. The pretend hits, are so far from the mark... and so unrealistic looking... that its almost comically bad. Nothing like the more modern Hong Kong action films... which have much more realistic fighting in them (they often actually make mild physical contact in them... unlike western actors / stunt men, whom use camera tricks to try to "Sell" the fake shots).
Now... if you want an Alltime Classic Martial Arts film... I highly Suggest watching "The 36th Chamber of Shaolin". Watch the English Dub version (I often recommend the Original voices... but the Western Vocals of the lead actor (Gordon Liu), is much better, and far more Comical). It contains a much better Lead actor, whom is full of Charisma, tons of great Humor, and impressive physical feats... all combined with a fantastic Story... and an amazing view into what it may have been like, to Train in the Ancient Pre-Industrial Shaolin Temple. In addition, you also get to understand a bit more about ancient Chinese life, and culture. Now... the fighting in it isnt on the HK level either... but its far more entertaining than whats shown here. The real magic is Gordon Liu's amazing Charismatic performances, the Many Comedic moments, and getting to see how he trained + overcomes each training challenge.
Side note... that Gordon Liu, played two parts in Kill-Bill. He played A Crazy 88 Gang Member, as well as Pai Mei (The elder Chinese Master, in the 2nd film). Gordon Liu is a Martial Arts Film Legend, thats put out more movies than probably any 15 other Action stars combined. I believe he was making films, before I was even born. He was also one of the few Chinese action Stars, that had trained for many years in a real Chinese combat art, well before getting into Acting. He is also one of the rare action stars, that not only puts on excellent physical performances... but is also a fantastic actor to boot. You see.. its quite often that a real martial artist... is not a very good actor... which is why they tend to train existing Actors.. to Emulate martial arts as best as they can... instead. Gordon is one of the rare few, that can do both exceptionally well... and is usually heads and shoulders, above all the rest.
Heck, his portrayal of Pai Mei, was pretty Fantastic too. I believe that was the first time that I had ever seen him play a ruthless "bad guy". All of the other films Ive seen him in... he was always playing the "good guy". It was an interesting change.. and he pulled it off very believably.
Also, IMO... Kurt Russel makes for a Much better action actor, than Van Damn. Watch him in "Soldier" for a very powerful and emotional performance. Van Damn cant even compare to Russel's onscreen presence, and his believable.. and emotionally conveying, acting chops.

International Fighting Arts Association "IFAA" organised the Kumite with the Kokuryukai (English: Black Dragon Society). Canadian born Frank William Dux respresented the Tanaka clan with Koga Yamabushi Ninjutsu, Ninjitsu at the Kumite. Frank William Dux was the inspiration to the movie Bloodsport with Jean Claude van Damme and developed his own ninja system: Dux Ryu Ninjitsu.

JCVD's 2nd film as an main castmember, both the first lead role and star-making role.
After the success, he was being called "The muscles from Brussels".
I saw Van Damme in Black Eagle and No Retreat, No Surrender before seeing Bloodsport.
This movie is indeed a classic of the genre.
Memorable story, great fight sequences and a guilty pleasure.
The original score of Paul Hertzog and the songs performed by Stan Bush are awesome.
RIP to Roy Chiao (Senzo Tanaka) and Norman Burton (Agent Helmer).
The only downside of this is the story of Frank Dux as an martial artist proved to be a hoax.
The life he lived or the so-called world records he broke as an competitor in the Kumite were unreal.
The upside was that the movie itself inspired Mortal Kombat:The Original Game (1992).
MK's creators wanted Van Damme for the game, but he turned down the offer.
So the character of Johnny Cage was made for the game as an action film star entering a 'larger than life' tournament.
In full circle, during Bloodsport's 25th anniversary, Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat One (2023)
was given a downloadable skin with the likeness and the voice of Van Damme.
The 3 'straight to video' sequels with Daniel Bernhardt were OK.
But I almost didn't bother with them at first.
Not bad and not good neither.
To me, the original is the best.
