The film was directed by Newt Arnold and written by Sheldon Lettich, Christopher Cosby and Mel Friedman. Bloodsport stars Jean-Claude Van Damme as Frank, Donald Gibb as Jackson, Leah Ayres as Janice, Norman Burton as Helmer, Forest Whitaker as Rawlins, Roy Chiao as Tanaka, Bolo Yeung as Chong Li and Shun-Yin Leung as Mrs. Tanaka.
Check out this first time watching this throwback classic 80's movie reaction video for Bloodsport, and see if I can make it through this action movie. Horror is a genre I've barely explored, mostly because I'm a huge wuss. Typically my Halloween movie viewings consist of Hocus Pocus and Halloweentown. This year I decided to expand my horror movie knowledge and try and watch these horror movie fan favourites.

This movie was essentially remade in 1996. It was called "The Quest" and starred Van Damme and Roger Moore, set in 1925. The plot was almost identical, where you had Van Damme facing a variety of fighters from around the world in a big secret martial arts tournament.
It was made in 1973 also and it was called Enter the Dragon, starring Bruce Lee of course.
@@Rek_Rc Right, but I was pointing out that Van Damme essentially remade his own movie which had nothing to do with any Bruce Lee movies..
@@Tampahop i understand, I was pointing out the similarities between enter the dragon and movies like mortal Kombat, bloodsport, the quest. Traveling to a secret location for a tournament with fighters from all over. Honestly, the plot has been done to death, but I'll watch it every time.
This movie was one of the things that got me started on my martial arts journey all those years ago! Still to this day this soundtrack gets me wanting to train!
That’s awesome! Thanks for watching!
@@ReelReviewsWithJen Dolph Lundgren was in Masters of the Universe
@@ReelReviewsWithJen the stunts are real but if you look at the fights close most punches and kicks are never landing it just editing that makes it look like it
@@ReelReviewsWithJen the events were made up Frank Dux was found to be a fraud
I loved this movie as a kid always a treat to catch it playing on the tube on some random day...those days are long gone but glad I lived them...
I love this movie to death, alongside Kickboxer these were my movies as a kid, must have watched them a hundred times.
hey jen no trees were harmed in the making of Bloodsport, that was a good one made me spit out my ice tea from laughing.great reaction.
Fun Fact: The character of Ray Jackson is played by Donald Gibb, who is most well known for the Revenge of the Nerds movies. He also had a small part in Conan the Barbarian as one of King Osric's guards. He had briefly played professional football for the San Diego Chargers until an injury sustained in a car accident ended his football career and he turned to acting.
Fun Fact: Bloodsport (along with Enter the Dragon and Big Trouble in Little China) was one of the inspirations for the video game Mortal Kombat, and the video game character Johnny Cage was based on Jean Claude Van Damme.
Don't forget Raiden from the 3 storms as well.
The scoreboard for montages is unlike any other 🎥 truly classical on a universal scale.
If you're interested in learning more about Cannon, I HIGHLY recommend the documentary Electric Boogaloo. It's a fascinating story. I'm friends with Sam Firstenberg, one of Cannon's regular directors, who made most of their ninja movies and Breakin 2: Electric Boogaloo (which gave the documentary its name). As crazy as the tales of the doc are, Sam proved to me that they are all real...
A really great movie. Fyi "The Brick not hit back" is a Bruce Lee Pharse. Also this movie and Big Trouble in Litle Chine were the inspiration for Mortal Kombat game. Mortal Kombat was suppose to be a Van Damme game after the success of this movie. Van Damme inspired the Johnny Cage character (You see the split punch to the balls scene just like Johnny Cage). You should see other martial arts by Van Dame and others. Van Damme movies like Kickboxer , Double Impact ,Cyborg, Lion Heart, Universal Solider, TimeCop. Especially I highly recommand you see "No Retrat No Surrender" (Van Damm is the bad guy in it) which is a kind of Karate Kid movie with much better fights. The actor who plays Chung Lee played with Bruce Lee in Enter The Dragon among other things
The movie contains many top martial artists and Hong Kong stuntmen (some of the greatest artists of all time) from all over the world. Jean Claude was a European champion himself. Bolo Young became famous staring opposite Bruce Lee in Enter the Dragon (you should watch that, you'll see this movie's inspiration and one of the greatest legends in movie history) most of Bolo's lines in this movie are cribbed right out of Enter the Dragon in homage to Bruce.
Great reaction, Jen. I have a few movies you can definitely react to:
The Warriors (1979)
No Small Affair (1984)
House Party (1990)
New Jack City (1991)
Mo' Money (1992)
Boomerang (1992)
The New Edition Story Parts 1, 2 & 3 (2017)
The Bobby Brown Story Parts 1 & 2 (2018)
Bolo Yeung, who plays Chong Li, actually got his name from the character he plays in Enter the Dragon. There's a great scene in JCVD's (embarrassing) reality show in which the pair are reunited, and JC gets incredibly frustrated trying to teach Bolo how to play "Rock, Paper, Scissors". I wish I were making this up.
Yes, this is in fact Hong Kong. Specifically Kwonloon city. Was one of the most secretive cities in the world, as in no one goes in or out, talks about what it was like inside and somehow Bloodsport is one of the only things of any kind that was ever filmed inside of it.
it really wasn't "secretive" it was just a horrible example of capitalism gone wrong, gigantic apartment complexes put together, huge amount of tiny apartments it was basically its own city on its own and the british who mandated over hong kong at the time didn't go in.
it was demolished shortly after and the residents relocated, nothing secretive just that people didn't wanna go in there lol
The 360 kick was his signature kick. He had to do it in every movie, like how we would wait for Arnold to say I'll be back in his movies.
"Aren't you a little young for full-contact?"
"Aren't you a little old for videogames?"
Fun Fact: Paulo Tocha is a real-life Muay Thai champion.
Location Location Fact: This is one of the few films featuring scenes filmed inside Kowloon Walled City before its destruction.
MK Connection Fact: Midway's hit videogame, Mortal Kombat (1992), took huge inspiration from the film and even used a parody of Jean-Claude Van Damme for the character Johnny Cage, who has a similar costume, back story and a familiar split punch. According to game creator John Tobias, they wanted to make a "gritty" game based on the film.
Historical Fact: The movie was touted as a true story, but over the years, doubts have arisen about its veracity. Most martial-arts enthusiasts view Frank Dux's accounts of competing in secret tournaments as complete fiction, along with his claims he was an undercover CIA operative. Some have pointed out that nobody else has come forward to confirm his story about competing in secret tournaments, or told their own version. It is now generally accepted that Dux lied his way into Hollywood, and that he has likely never won or even competed in a single martial arts tournament. Records obtained through the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA) show he was only in the US Marine Corps Reserve, and was never posted overseas, let alone to Southeast Asia as he has claimed. The CIA has no record of his ever working with them. His personal brand of martial arts, Dux Ryu Ninjitsu, is also a complete fabrication. Frank Dux never has and does not hold any of the world records listed at the end of the film. Like his own back story and claims of kumite success, these are all pure fiction.
Paulo Tocha quit after he injured his back.
Now that you said it, I never realized how many montages were in this movie LOL!! I saw this in the theater back in the day. The 80s gen American martial arts movies were filled with shots and montages like this. Also a lot of what looked like homemade movies were running rampant LOL!!
So many montages! Lol thanks for watching!!
This movie is a work of fiction and is the stuff of martial arts legends. Frank Dux was a bullshit artist not a martial artist from all reports but this is still a super fun movie when I was a kid. (Still has a warm place in my heart)
If you enjoyed Bloodsport, you might also enjoy Van Damme's movie Kickboxer or Best Of The Best with Eric Roberts and James Earl Jones or Sylvester Stallone's movie Over The Top 😁
The movie was filmed inside Kowloon CIty . I saw the place once but have never been inside it . The place was a maze and it's easy to get lost inside . It's worse if you can't speak the language . Kowloon City has a few documentaries here on UA-cam , check it out if you get a chance .
The guy who plays Paco, who has become a fan favourite being slimy as all hell without really having anything to do with the story or any dialogue, stars in an incredible "so bad it's good" movie called "Clash of the Ninjas", aka "Clash Commando", easily one of the most ridiculous movies ever made. Hysterical.
Jen, you might like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000). It stars females kicking ass: Zhang Ziyi and Michelle Yeoh (Everything, Everywhere All at Once). I love Ziyi....she's so beautiful and her martial arts skills in the film are phenomenal. Its a tragic love story with traditional kung fu, made in Hong Kong but it was released in over 3,000 theatres in America back in 2000. I saw it like 5 times in the theatres here in Chicago and every time the theater was packed. A very nice film you might like.
I read that the tablet put into Chong Li’s shorts was meant to be quicklime.
If you liked this one i can recommend Kickboxer with JCVD and Enter the Dragon with Bruce Lee both great movies.
At 14:11 , we see the, now world famous, Paulo Tocha with the very tricky "hands up, dont shoot" stance. You cut out the beginning of his match, but anyway.. This is a small sect of MMA called Krav Manga. What makes this stance so dangerous is your hands are up in a defensive way. But they are also up and ready to strike. Its a non-aggressive fighting stance that keeps your opponent guessing. Its a technique that's taught in many many self defense classes today. Think of it as offensive self defense. Paulo is essentially playing himself in the movie.
This was filmed in Hong Kong and features several famous locations.
The villain, Chong Li, was played by martial artist Bolo Yeung, who features prominently in one of Bruce Lee’s films, Enter the Dragon.
Fun Fact: Chong Li is played by Hong Kong actor Bolo Yeung, who also appeared with Bruce Lee in Enter the Dragon in 1973.
Roy Chiao, who played Senzo Tanaka in this, was the Shaolin Monk at the beginning of _Enter the Dragon._
@@Texy88 more specifically, he's the teacher that talks to Bruce in the beginning. the quotes with the "what is the highest point you wish to achieve" and such, were spoken by Roy Chiao.
Frank Dux, the Black Dragon Society, and the “Kumite” are a complete fraud….but at least we got this gem of a martial arts movie out of it. Most of the fighters were actual martial artists..the martial arts community loves this movie… we just know it’s not real lol. So glad you enjoyed it. Just take it with a big grain of salt lolol
@aldo_sosaknowing the truth doesn't ruin it. It's still a fun movie. Learning about just how much of a fraud Dux is, is also fun lol plus it keeps people from looking like idiots by recounting his fake records featured at the end of the movie.
Doesn't matter really, the story itself still inspires many, and the first movie where we got to see what JCVD can do, and there is nothing fake about his kicks and abilities. He is the "real" frank dux imo lol
I guarantee you have very few or even 0 friends in real life.
LMAO @ some of the responders, taking this so seriously. It's a ridiculous (and therefore extremely great) '80s movie during the height of Reagan-era "Karatemania."
@aldo_sosaHell is REAL. Repent of your sins and turn to God. He loves you. Believe in his Son Jesus and you'll be saved. UA-cam: 30 Days Touring HELL
Chong Li his actor name is Bolo Yeung is also in the Bruce Lee movie Enter the Dragon and in Double Impact which is another good JCVD movie.
Bolo(Chong Li) is a famous kung-fu actor and bodybuilder in China. Always love to see him in movies.
Now you gotta watch Kickboxer (1989)
"No trees were made in the making of..."
Tree instantly died. Leading the sequel SapSport: the revenge.
Hahaha 10/10 would watch
Hey Jen! Awesome reaction. This such a phenomenal film. So happy you enjoyed it. Just subscribed! Keep up the brilliant work!😎👍🏽👍🏽🥋
Thank you so much for the kind words! Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching!🎬
There's actually a great game called "spot the point in the Jean-Claude Van Damme movie where they try to justify his accent". In this one, it's basically just the kid. Other films have lines, whole mono/dialogues and even whole scenes or subplots. The main exception is Street Fighter, where Capcom, the Japanese makers of the game, insisted to director Steven de Souza (writer of Die Hard and Commando, and another name whose name I'll just pick up off the ground) that the film had to star JCVD as the "all-American hero". It transpired soon enough that the Capcom guys had only ever seen JCVD dubbed into Japanese and knew nothing about the accent.
Great Film of the 80's with Jean Claude Van Damme!
0:56- The Cannon seal of quality. They cranked out some of the best 80s movies during the Golan-Globus days of the company.
The epitome of BIG 80's movies! From Chuck Norris to Chuck Bronson!
Over the top!!!!
A CLASSIC bit of 80's cheese 🧀 ❤ captures the spirit of Bruce Lee adequately, which in itself is impressive.
frank never went back to defend his title, but he did hook up with steven seagal, working together undercover with al gore, who invented the internet, to take down the guy that the movie goodfellas was based on
the floor judge was there to hear if they made their opponent say mite, which is the same as saying uncle or I give up, one of the three ways to defeat your enemy the other two ways being death, and nocking them off the mat.
Jean Claude Van Damme's 1rst Appearance in Movies was "No Retreat No Surrender"(1986) cheesy but good film,i recommend it
My favorite movie as a kid. I can't tell you how many times I've seen it
19:57 that’s bolo yeung, a bodybuilder. He also starred in Bruce lee’s movie enter the dragon
The Black Dragon society is very real. Trust me and it was scary.
You need to watch Enter the Dragon(1973)
My favorite movie of all time.
At the time Hong Kong was part of the British Empire. Not China at the time, the film industry in the town crashed after the UK left.
Didn't know Forrest Whitaker was in this. Fast Times at Ridgemont High, The Last King of Scotland
With any fight scene there is a risk of injury, you can use some perspective tricks with the camera to hide the fact that you didn't kick or punch anywhere near the other stuntman, but mistakes can happen. In fact JCVD did actually knock out his opponent in the first fight his character had. When the guy got up and tried to attack JCVD from behind, JCVD threw a back elbow, legit hit the other guy and knocked him cold.
This movie got me into martial arts
First time watching a Bloodsport reaction :P Like that u watch alot of old good movies, that other overlook.
KUMITE KUMITE KUMITE
Van damme bloodsport one of the best action movies ever great break up the movie is untouchable
The '80s just would not have been the same without Cannon Studios under Menachem Golàn and Yoram Globus. I enthusiastically second the commenter who recommended the Mark Hartley documentary *Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films* which declares, once and for all, that the Go-Go Boys (as they called themselves) are the Go-To Boys when it comes to '80s cheese (and I look forward to sharing some of it with you). Keep going, and success in your endeavors. 😎
Bloodsport is the most influential best martial artist greatest movie 🍿 great music 🎶 the movie is classic
Cool reaction as always Jen, you have a great weekend sweetie and most of all, cheese and rice 🥰❤️
Thumbnail rules 😂👍❤
This was his breakout roll. See the Rocky franchise. Rocky 4 was like this with many montages.
I haven’t seen any Rocky movies 😬😬
The classic fight movie 🔥🐉
8:13 I thought he was jumping on for a piggyback ride.
Jackson: [Frank is doing splits between two chairs] That hurts me just lookin' at it. You'd better stop doing that. You might wanna have kids one of these days.
You know that you are watching a 80's action movie when there is a montage. Bloodsport didn't waste any time by showing one in the opening credits.
This is one of the few films featuring scenes filmed inside Kowloon Walled City before its destruction.
Another great 80s martial arts movie made even more awesome by the music of Stan Bush. Any chance you will continue with the Puppet Master movies? Part 2 is better than the first and part 3 is my favorite. That has my favorite puppet, Six Shooter.
I love 80s pls do more
Blood sport is a pretty good movie
Great movie I grew up with
It all started with Bloodsport and The Perfect weapon and Seagal and others came in. Jet LI. If my stoned old mind doesn't' doesn't fool me. Cynthia Rothrock(?) Was everywhere. Gary Daniels. This movie is an O.G.
Director - "Jean Claude, what are you doing?"
JCVD - "This is the scene where you show my butt."
Director - "There is no scene where we show your butt."
JCVD - "YES THERE IS! SHOW MY BUTT OR I ROUNDHOUSE KICK YOU IN THE FACE!"
Director - "..................Butt scene, take one, action."
Great honour.
Always a fun movie 😊
Nice choice. A guilty pleasure even for the well educated people. You have to love the muscles from Brussels: JC van Dee
Masters of the Universe was Dolph.
The actor you couldn’t place was Forrest Whittaker.
Ah yes! That’s it! Thanks for watching 🎬
Hey girl ! it seemed you like this movie a lot,it is a Classic and That Butt shot has to be a plus as well 😄
Love from Scotland Jen ❤
Thank you for watching!
I always loved action movies as a kid. And I loved the Arnold movies, the Stallone movies, but Vann Damme movies were my favorite. The other two were brute strength, Van Damme, was pure athleticicm and karate. You'll never see Arnold or Stallone do a flying spin kick.
In the _Iliad_ of my imagination, Arnold is Ajax, Sylvester is Hector, and Jean-Claude is Achilles. Such a great pity it'll never be on an actual screen. But, who might _you_ cast? 📜⚔️🤓
Real person? yes. True story? That's been in heavy debate for years.
last king of scotland. Forrest.
I always marvel at the length of the flashback. Was Frank just staring at that sword for like 3 hours?
It takes great mental discipline!
Forest Whitaker
That theme song kicks in and I can’t resist singing those corny ass lyrics.
Haha they’re so corny!
The real-life Frank Dux is full of shit, a complete liar of the highest order, but this is a fantastic movie!
"KUMITE KUMITE KUMITE"
Now you have to watch the other Jean-Claude Van Damme movie, Kickboxer.
In the early days of the UFC there weren't any weight classes by the way.
It is set I Hong kong
Its beyond Cheezy
Love your reactions
Can I suggest one?
Student Bodies! It is so bad and campy
I think you might like it
oh oh oh ouuhhhh ouhhhhhh😆😆
Hohohoho !!!!!!!!! Santa claus !!!!
А мне Джексон нравится в этом фильме хорошии боец😅
PS-that was cocaine

Known liar Frank Dux says this is all real.
Perhaps it is, in a way. In the infinite multiverse, there has to be at least *one* 'verse where it _is._ 🤔 😉
Hooooo, hooooo, hahaaaaaaa!!! 😂
This s awesome, even though the true storey part is absolute bollocks. The quest is better though.
But good offence a good defence, saying. not. Defence beat offence.
If I recall correctly, Cannon made quite a few decent B-Movies, Bloodsport being one of them. They also made some downright awful movies :)
Don’t do any research on Frank Dux please, just enjoy the movie 😂
Why would anyone be interested in unfamiliar people watching movies and filming theirselves and smiling or so
You watched it so ask yourself that question
Thanks for another great reaction video, Jen! 😁Bloodsport is the movie that launched Jean Claude Van Damme's career in Hollywood. It's "supposedly" based on the real life of Frank Dux, but over the years it's been revealed that everything in the movie was fabricated and never actually happened, and Dux himself is considered a fraud. But the film was a huge hit for Cannon Films and Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, who were the kings of the B-movies of the 1980s.
Dux still contests it lol he is legit as a martial artist but he hyped up his military experience and cia ties. He has helped train law enforcement in defense a few times from what i hear
@@Mrs.Deanna_Ember He's legitimate in the sense that he's a martial artist and a black belt, but there are a lot of martial artists with black belts. Dux's mythical claims about his prowess, the Kumite, and his ninjutsu training are all garbage. The only legitimate Japanese bujutsu school that still teaches the Shinobi techniques is the Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu in Japan, and Dux was never there. Steven Seagal is Dux's only equal in BS.
@@44excalibur well thats what I mean, not disputing him as an actual martial artists, and has done some decent demonstrations but his background was definitely exaggerated, nobody has been in over 300 fights thats for sure lol. Seagal the same thing as far whatever cia experience he supposedly had, but gained more respect for him over the years as far as being a legit martial artist at least, and he did actually live and study in Japan and didnt like Dux much himself
I have plenty, no this not one.
I'll join the list to give the thing more credibility: Frank Dux is a humongous liar. None of that is true, but the movie is a cheesy classic. And yeah, there are 3 sequels. Jackson is in Part 2, and that's about it. As for remakes... pretty much JCVD's entire career (Kickboxer, The Quest and, in my opinion, the best of the bunch, Lionheart). Great reaction!
Van dam us Belgian
Don't get too excited about Frank Dux and his exploits because it is all made up. He pawned this story of a secret tournament off for years, but it never really happened. When the movie came out, real journalists investigated his claims and nothing could be found to back them up. The martial arts community considers him a huge fraud. The most laughable stat is that he had 56 knockouts in one tournament. LMAO! Does he know how unrealistic that sounds? All of that said, I love this movie! Always like that you pick diverse movies to watch.
Your commentary in this one cracked me up throughout. Nice reaction to a macho cheese fest.
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed the video🎬
