- In today's video I'm looking at Philips Hue. But this is a slightly different video where I show how you set up Philips Hue from scratch. I go through what you need, and how to set it up. It's a fairly lengthy video, so I've split it into sections which cover each individual stage and you can skip to the bit that interests you.
This is the starter kit that I use : UK - amzn.to/3Dk445B / USA - amzn.to/3wMkbXa
However if you want to buy individual components they are here :

Hi from Scotland
Thank you so much for doing this video, I know you uploaded it 10 months ago but it is very easy to follow.
I have not long retired, done up all the house just recently, just bought a new tv and I am going to buy Phillips Hue lights to enhance the living room.
Once again, thank you so much for this first class video.
Kind regards
Johnny
You're very welcome! There's so much hue content on my channel... And more to come!
Epic video Kip. Looking at setting up some Philips hue lights in my flat and this has been really informative.
Thank you! More Hue content coming soon!
Amazing video looking forward for the next one 😄
I LOVE this video...thank you! I was mid-stream changing all the dimmers and bulbs in my house trying to get the perfect kelvin and hue...and started wondering if I was making an expensive mistake. I think I might halt and change gears in favor of this ecosystem while I have not yet installed most of these expensive dimmers. Great video Kip!
Happy to help! Thanks so much for watching
great vid - good vibes - no loud high key intro. works for me - subbed
Thanks for subbing!
Great video. Thank you.
Glad you like it Markus!
Very informative kip, you should get them to send you some gear as that was an awesome tutorial and making me want to go and get some 🤔 😂😂
If only!
Great Video that, You should definitely do a follow up video about other features the Philip Hue has :D
I will!
Real enjoyed this video. Please do make the next video
Fully agree!
Let me know what you want to see!!
@@kiphakes Hi Kip. Few proposals: not using the hub gives me less options, correct? I like to know bit more about circadian lighting with Hue (only possible with hub?). Thanks in advance!
Please make that in-depth video pleaae. This was great!
Greg.. Let me know what you want to see and I'll make it happen!
Nice vid
Love hue equipment, but I can't help but feel that they are far too expensive. Especially as competitors are now selling the same product for a fraction of the price. new networking technologies have now come up with thread and matter and thread I have to say is far more responsive!
nice sweater!
Finally a video for the UK market, thanks! I was just wondering, if I have a room, in which I would like to have two zones, let's say one zone for sofa, one for dining, can I get two remotes and use them as switches for a particular zone just fine? Also, does the app allow you do more funky stuff such as operating only one zone or both at the same time? Hope this makes sense and thanks again!
Yup you can do just that!
Great video, thanks. By the way, I love your shirt, May I ask you where it’s from?
That's so kind. It's from Superdry!
I will save and get the kit
I think a BIG missed opportunity is to use your existing local area network. Instead, Philips create their own MESH network forcing you to have a node every so many feet so that it'll reach all the lights. I guess they did this on purpose SO that you would have to purchase a ton of lights from them... I tried to put this in my network rack and immediately all signal was blocked, though I have access points throughout the home. My app can find the Bridge no issue, but since it puts out it's own wireless 2.4GHz wireless signal, it just doesn't work well unless your completely engulfed in the eco system.
Hence I’m forced to use Bluetooth
Great video. One question. Do you have to leave your normal light switches on at all times for the bulbs to work ?
Correct, or you can cover them over with Hue Switches (I’ve made a video about that too)
@@kiphakes great thank you for the super fast reply ☺️
Hey man, awesome video. Im not sure if i should get the philips hue or maybe just the philips sceneswitch lights. I still have alot of "old/normal" switches in my house and it's also easy to just turn the lights on using those switches because they are at every corner located. Can i still use these old switches when I get philips Hue? Or do I need to keep all the old switches "on/activated" and buy new philips hue buttons or tap dial switches? Thx in advance for helping 😅
The old switches would need to be kept 'on'.. there are some devices that you can put inside existing switches to make them 'smart' - will be looking at those in future videos.. but I use philips hue switches on my walls, and have most of my 'old' switches covered up by them - I've made a few videos about doing that. :)
@@kiphakes and with philips switches you mean the philips buttons or tap dial switches. Right?
In my living room I sometimes have like 2 or 3 light switches on top of each other. Its pretty hard to hide those i guess i have to put the philips dial switch on top of the others? 🙉
I mean these - amzn.to/3YBRjyH
If you're handy, you could wire out the original switches altogether, and put a blanking plate on top.. that's another option! :)
I've bought several Hue ceiling lights for my bedroom upstairs, but I've placed the Hue Bridge downstairs in the living room (since that's where router is) - is this distance a problem or no?
Shouldn't be...
How does the remote switch differentiate between bulbs?
I want to put a bulb in three locations. Living room, dining room and bedroom for my elderly mother. Can she carry that remote from room to room and just press the on off button for the bulb/room she wants or would she have to press some other configuration of buttons depending on which bulb/room she’s in?
In other words, does the bulb sense aim and or proximity to a specific bulb? Or is there some other button configuration to deal with that will flummox her?
I’d recommend getting a remote switch for each room really.. or look at my tap dial switch video I published recently, that has for individual buttons you can use to control different rooms
@@kiphakes Super fast response!
Thank you!
Please do a video with Philips sensors
Done! Make your lights turn on automatically! Looking at the Hue Motion Sensor

Hi Kip! How does the geofence work in a family environment?
Well.. if the kids are old enough to be left, they’d need the app setting up on their phone so it could report their location too.
Lots of the downstairs lights in our house contain three bulbs (2 x 3 = 6 in living room) which would make it mega expensive. So using this system as a bit of a security thing, Can this system control table top lights that are plugged into a wall socket. Thanks.
Yeah - absolutely - I've got Hue Lamps in my bedside lights
Hi mate. Do you know if with the hue bridge you can manage smart lights from Ikea brand? (Tradfri). Many thanks!
Yeah. So long as they use the Zigbee protocol- which I think most do.
@@kiphakes the last question. How ikea is other brand I understand that It doesn't work with hue app? I can link led ikea to hub philips but I will need the ikea App or Google home? Thanks
Sorry , I don’t understand the question
Nice shirt by the way
Thank you! :)
Can i install the bulb in a 220 volts input voltage?
If you mean output - then yes, that's fine
Does the hue bridge have to be in the same room as the lights ?
Nope!
@@kiphakes you sure like I have a play strip to game with and don’t it have to be plugged into the monitor to know what lights are on the screen
@@ipoulter9765 I have Hue lights in every room of my home.. I only have one Hue Bridge!
@@kiphakes it’s not lights it’s a play strip that’s on back of monitor to react to game screen I’m not sure how it’s gonna sense what colour the screen colour is without but wing in the room unless it’s done by wifi
@@ipoulter9765 It would need both the Hue Bridge and the Hue Sync Desktop App on your computer in that case
How many lights can you link to it ?
I think the limit is 56 per hub.
how can my wife get the control like I do right now. does she have to have an account
Just install the app on her phone, and pair it with the bridge. An account is only needed for control out of the house.
My bridge is onl6 showing 2 blue lights. The internet light would not light up. What should I do?
That’s very odd.. is it plugged directly into your router?
@@kiphakes yes it is.
What's is a roota?
Sorry let me translate . Row ter
@@kiphakes Ahhhh, kinda thought so at first. Thanks.
The price of Philips hue products is extremely high compared for same products on Amazon IS shamefully for simple led bulb and strips
You get what you pay for.. I’ve been using Hue stuff since the start, still not had a failure. There’s a lot of random cheap Chinese crap on Amazon
anyone else have issues with these lights constantly disconnecting from the bridge ? I have to constantly restart router and my hue app. very annoying. need a real fix.
Nope. No issues here
Ever figure it out? Batteries?
@@barkingmad7407 yes and no lol I ending up moving and ever since then I haven’t had any issues
Thanks British Steve Carell
You’re welcome Kevin!
A recommendation for you sir. Cut down your intro to less than 3 seconds. Thanks for the content.
Thanks for the recommendation.. but, no.. it’s not changing.
@@kiphakes No worries my friend.
where in the world are philips hue £40. that starter kit is £200 on amazon now 😭
