Thank you Ed, for all your help. But I have two other questions for you on this page. One about extra military benefits, and one about survivor's benefits because you said "there are exceptions to this." What are the exceptions you were referring to?
Since my husband was in the Air Force with an honorable discharge, and I believe you said that if you were in the military, you would get another $300 quarterly. But we didn't know this when we filed for his SSDI and so it wasn't included. Therefore, my survival benefits were based on his record without that bonus. Is there any way I can tell them about this and possibly have my survivor's benefits re-figured? Thanks.
Both my wife and I retired with California PERS. The city didn’t pay into social security. We have paid into social security from other jobs. My wife only gets $90 per month. Can she file on my social security?
Thank you for all you do! At about 27:10, you suggest a person set up an account and check that Social Security has recorded the earnings correctly. As one completes paperwork to collect, one cannot proceed without agreeing that the earnings numbers are right. Maybe the worker should have been first asked this about 55 years earlier!
Dr Weir, if a person gets a pension from state of Florida, would it be considered as part of the income allowed for 2025 - 23,400.00- for an early retirement person?? Thanks and many blessings for you!!
Survivor benefits can be more now then yours at your full retirement age 67 choose wisely especially if you need the $. You can also collect survivors benefits at 60. My friend makes more at 62 on her survivors Benefits at 62 then she would make on her own at 70. She needed the money she took it, made a huge difference in her life now, her husband was a high income Earner she worked but not a high income earner.

Sorry, I have a weird question to ask my husband was on Social Security disability and when he turns 65 of course they put him on SSA now he’s 83 years old. I don’t ever remember telling them that he was in the military. Is it too late to do something like that?
If I'm on survivor's benefits, and wait until FRA to claim retirement benefits, do I get to receive both at the same time since my retirement benefits will be very low, (maybe $250 a month)?
Hi Dr. Ed, I filed for SS benefits on November 8th 2024 and the SS website says a decision will be made within 1 month. Will they be calling me for an interview, or is the decision the same thing? Thank you for all your help!

My husband is disabled and this election has made him nervous and he is afraid they will change his Medicare and or payments he is 63 and he knows if he goes ahead early and take retirement early his payment would go down. Should he just wait to see after Trump is sworn in and see what changes will be made or go ahead now?

Actually they will continue to increase an additional 8% per year after your full retirement age, so if you wait until you’re 70 you’ll get an additional 24% (but you will have missed out on the earlier payments). That’s why Dr Ed says no decision is right for everyone.😊
If I take my SS at 62 and my husband waits until 70, can I switch to half of his full retirement amount after he files, or would I only get 1/2 of what he would have gotten at 62 if I switch?
Good data.. My medical from my employer ends April 2025. Would like to delay my SS benefits until my severence pay stops in July. I'll be 68 and want to collect SS benefits. Can I sequence this with SS?
I turn 65 in Jan 2025. My spouse turns 62 in August of 2025. If I file at 65, will her max survivor benefit be stuck at the "65" level or can she wait until she's 67 to file to get my full FRA amount, or will she be stuck with the "65" level since that's when I filed for my own? I think I'll file at FRA at 67, so my wife can collect my full FRA when I die. But does she need to wait until she's 67 to file to get my FRA survivor benefit amount? Also, if I file at 70 and die, does she get my FRA amount or delayed amount as survivor benefit?
Your spouse is eligible for what you were receiving when you passed- if you wait until 70, spouse gets that benefit amount (including the delayed retirement credits). Or, if you weren't yet taking benefits, your spouse is eligible for what you were eligible to receive on your date of death. If spouse isn't full survivor retirement age when survivor benefits start, the amount will be reduced for their starting age.
@@carolinecollins2441 Thanks. I've heard different things from different "experts" so I'm not sure if I'm confused or not. Somebody else claims that the spouse can only collect "up to" my full FRA amount (even if I filed at 70), but not the delayed benefit amount. I'm not sure who to believe anymore...
I make big mistake I didn't wait for one yrs and 6months to get my full retirement age that make my SS and my pension less. So pls don't rache ask before 🤔🤔
My son revived a big money for the sale of is house. All taxes were take and is bill's were pay for him out of the sale of his house. Does he have to pay anything more

I retired at 65 Nov 2023. I get a small pension and SSA. However, with what I get I am barely able to my my mortgage and my utilities and bills. My children are grown and I have no spouse or other income. If I rent a room is that income that I have to report and will cut my SSA? I'm starting to really get Scared if property taxes continue to go up. Especially since I only now owe $80 thousand to finish paying off. What information can you give me to help with this situation. Thank you in advanve for your advise and information.
Sometimes you just want to get some tax free income. Rent your room quietly. Maybe do a cash deal? Also find stuff to flip. It’s profitable and fun. Best of luck.
SSDI is full benefits. You will receive COLA increases every year. The only way to ensure an increase of more than your check amount now, would be to get a part time job if you're able.
Ed, I feel like I know Social Security pretty well, but I always pick up something to share with my friends and family! Thanks so much for what you do! Cheers, Michael Albuquerque NM USA,
Im 61 will be 62 in may 2025 i make at work 25k yearly and plan to work till 65 however if i do file for ss in may will i be under the max earnings of 23,400?
Max earnings don't apply until you start collecting so divide the annual earnings limit by the number of months you have left in the year. Hope this makes sense. In other words you are not affected until you actually start receiving your money from social security
What about other people using my social security number?? When I reported this to social security, They told me it was okay because the other people using my number were also using a different name. ??
This means that the other person is making payments into social security under your number, but because SS knows it’s not you they will just put that extra money (that the other person is contributing) into the social security trust fund since the person using your number won’t be able to collect it. It doesn’t benefit you directly, but it benefits everyone who does collect social security benefits.
Survivor's benefits? You said that there are exceptions? What are those exceptions? After all it's not my fault that my husband died at a young age, and I had to start those benefits at 60?
Spouse is planning to file on their 64th birthday in March 2025. Was going to wait until 67 but due to the new changes spouse will be filing 3 years earlier than expected. Are we making a mistake or should we continue to wait?
