Seasons of Fear is one of my favorite audios so I laughed out loud when the worst list started! Edit: just realised you used my Silver Turk drawings for that segment. nice.

Lucie bleedin' Miller was my childhood. (Which is crazy to think, but can you believe the Eighth Doctor Adventures line is around 14 years old?) It breaks my heart for you to dunk on her like this. Admittedly, when I go back to listen to those audios, they're more camp than I remember and nothing compared to Charley's run. But there are some absolutely phenomenal standouts, including the first time an audio drama made my cry uncontrollably - Lucie Miller/To The Death, her two-part final story, which is as heartbreaking as it sounds. Her stories can reach some astounding narrative heights, and it's a pity that people who don't like her very much can't really experience them.
Eight is definitely one of my favorite doctors, both because of how terrific Paul Mcgann is and how many great stories he's in across different mediums.
The Lucy Millar series has some great stories, like blood of the daleks, human resources, to the death, the Christmas story where Lucy almost dies and finds out that the doctor has been lying to her to the point where she leaves, the story with the monk and the ice warriors, where the actions of the doctor are questioned, etc.
I'm still working through the Eighth Doctor myself. Getting through this Doctor is a process. It really is because there are so many stages of his life.
Currently doing a listen of 8s run with Charlie. He quickly became my favorite doctor after Chimes of midnight and Seasons of Fear actually. The villains in seasons were silly and camp, but the acting from Mcgann in that one really pulled me along. My favorites atm are Scherzo and A Natural History of Fear. I can't believe two 9/10 stories were released almost back to back, with the absolute wet fart that was creed of the kromon in between.

And after the first "rebirth" then each five lifetimes is like one standard lifetime from child to old man, with a lot of changes along the way.

My favourite line so far is "The Doctor must be... He must stand trial" as it really sells the idea that the Daleks are trying to fake the whole idea of being allies but it's not in their nature to even pretend to have a diverse range of emotions. It's definitely a better representation of the Daleks than they have been getting on TV recently.
Spare Parts is an absolute Must-hear. Very fortunately, it is one of the Big Finish Doctor Who audios that has been put on Spotify for free. That was how I listened to most of McGann's stuff, but I'm going to buy the rest at some point because I love that man so much.
I've heard of that one, not got round to it yet, but I'll get there at some point, working through the Eighth Doctor Adventures but it would seem much of that beyond series 1 isn't on there.
3:28 “Okay, most conventionally attractive Doctor ranking, let’s go!” Honestly chuckled at that. And tbh, I agree with the whole ranking. David Tennant’s definitely the most conventionally attractive Doctor with Paul McGann a very close second, Peter Capaldi’s too silver fox-y to not be third, Jodie Whittaker’s absolutely gorgeous so she deserves fourth, and if you ignore the outfit then you can see why Colin Baker is definitely fifth.
1:24 I agree with this categorization, except for the 9th doctor. He's not really a clown hobo. More like a war veteran clowning around to conceal his pain. His action oriented attitude is closer to the 3rd doctor but since he's not a dandy either, I think 9 is his own category.
Ziusudra He definitely is an actor who borrowed the least from other actors, but that “Ello!” Smile and working class battered leather approach to the role was inspired. He extends into the romantic, but I named the category with him in mind.
3:07 He's definitely the best looking Doctor. He was a total STUD in the movie, and he still looks great for his age. Best fashion sense too. Edit: 3:30 Wait, what? No way, broski. Just look at how they both look now versus how they both looked then. No freaking competition. They may as well be the same age, because Tennant looks it. Sorry, but it's true. 😂
i REALLY want them to give mcgann a tv series. i don't know how but they should definitely do it. they missed the chance to bring him back in the 50th by casting john hurt. they'd better write at least a special with the 8th doctor in it soon. like come on. hands down the best doctor. also, paul mcgann has an amazing voice i don't think anyone else would've done that well being relegated to audio only
Thank god for BF putting the main range on Spotify. I always had a soft sport for 8 even before I heard the audio dramas, I quite liked some aspects of the TV movie (like the tardis design). If they didn't put them on there I would never have discovered all the awesome and inspirational stories 8 had.
McGann became one of my faves due to Big Finish's Dark Eyes/Doom Coalition/Time War and I wish he and Capaldi(my other fave) got to team up. I like that Big Finish thoroughly tested his pacifism and Chibnall could take a page from that.
I wish the BBC would give McGann a series finally while he still looks young enough to pull it off. Maybe it would bring the series back from the abyss it's fallen into.
I know this video is 4 years old now, but I want to point out that the US also has a bunch of Big Finish stuff on Spotify as well. Really glad about that too, Big Finish is amazing!
The Conscript actually isn't bad. I'd argue it is genius in that it's small scale keeps it from making the universe smaller. And it's a glimpse into rebellious Academy Doctor. This isn't BF's "Gallifrey". If you're hesitating on the box set because of that one story, my advice is go for it.
Interesting choices. I actually really liked Series 1 & 4 of 8th Doctor Adventures but Phobos was definitely the weakest story of the bunch. I quite liked Seasons of Fear too, certainly more so than Invaders from Mars or Time of the Daleks. If you can't tell, I LOVE the 8th Doc and his Big Finish run. A personal favourite of mine is Time Works. It blends the Fairytale with the SciFi in a way they tried but never really managed with the Matt Smith run. Does Solitaire count also? I know McGann technically isn't in it, but...
Is Time Works the one with the clock people? And yeah, i'd count Solitaire. We need to. I'm aware i'm the outlier in not liking the Radio4 Miller run, apart from Human Resources I felt like putting them all on there together really, Phobos was just the scapegoat.
SamyulDavis That's right. I'm aware I have a bias towards that story as it was actually my very first (lent it from a friend). Don't worry about outlying opinions, I have plenty of them. People hate Minuet from Hell but I love it. I also sort of liked Chibnalls run on Torchwood xD. Also, Google just tried to autocorrect Chibnall to Chin Balls.
I love the Eighth Doctor for being a romantic doctor, but not in the lovey-dovey sense. I feel like he's more of a poet-like character rooted in the Romanticism movement of the late 1700s and early 1800s-- even his costume matches this! I want another doctor like this again.
You nailed this perfectly. He's a rather cold doctor with a romantic aesthetic. It's actually bizarre we haven't had another Victorian-themed Doctor in the new series, it used to be the default. Imagine if Whittaker had gone for that angle, that way it could be tried&tested and seem new at the same time!
It's interesting watching these again when I've listened to a bunch of these. I really didn't like Seasons of Fear but I thought Phobos was alright. I didn't love the Silver Turk as much as others seem to though.
My top 10: 1. Storm Warning 2. The Chimes of Midnight 3. Horror of Glam Rock 4. An Earthly Child 5. Neverland 6. Zagreus 7. Sisters of the Flame/Vengeance of Morbius 8. Blood of the Daleks 9. Night of the Doctor 10. Invaders from Mars!
they really should have him on tv or crossover with the newest Doctor would be neat , now granted Im a guy from across the pond but # 8 was probably the best Doctor in my opinion as far as the look of the Tardis went and they could somehow visit him before the events of the timewar, which I think was epic by the way!And like you say hes still young they should utilise him that would be so cool or at least for us fans cause I dont speak for anybody else at this point but who is the best stuff on TV...
I think Mcgann is the doctor in many ways. He could have just stoped with the movie but he came back and has done so much to shape the doctor to how own. Like he has Charlie, Lucy, the two comic companies and he’ll even Mary Sheri as a one time companion. Not to mention his acting on audio and the movie are great.
I AM a particular kind of Doctor Who fan. His (novels) time as the Doctor was when my fiction writing was the most prolific. The BBC novels were the only thing that got me through the Interregnum. That void of time when Doctor Who was off the screens...
Even if we didn't see the 8th Doctor more on screen outside of a bad movie and a excellent mini episode I'm just grateful we got Paul McGann as the Doctor he's a splendid actor one of the finest to be in the role and Big Finish made the 8th Doctor truly one of the finest Doctors.
McGann is the Doctor that entered the Time War and fought the Dalekes , that had the guts to say enough and battle , no more running , the first doctor that (and that is my own thoughts had 2 console interiors before Matt Smith had his 2 . The 1996 one was too posh and well build to be used in warfare and the time that the Doctor can reach to the old console , he might have lost his life , and so the dirty dingy interior that the War Doctor/9/10 had taken shape from the McGann era onward . A good man going to War does not need a push interior just the bear necesities and that interior of the War Doctor i like to belive came from his era . + The Tardis changing mid battle would be considered a hassle to the War Doctor, as the controls change with the enviroment as well and he used the Tardis as it was left from MgGanns era ) . Dont know if that is cannon in any way , but to me it makes best sense .
@@Kasterborous1963 That's completely fine if you don't like the ones on Spotify. I personally don't have a problem with the ones on Spotify because The Holy Terror is one of my favourite pieces of media/art out there. The stories on there definitely aren't for everyone, quite a few of them are Big Finish's early episodes, where they were still discovering their identity and writing style. That being said, I still appreciate free Big Finish on Spotify, even if they aren't all amazing. Maybe I'm biased, no, I definitely am biased, but I still had a great time and would recommend a few of the stories on Spotify, including the flawed ones. Sorry to go off on this big tangent, after all, you were just expressing yourself in a concise and succinct manner, and I responded in a very drawn-out and overblown fashion. And don't get me wrong, I value your opinion.
P.S. You were very respectful in presenting your opinion, and I think tat deserves to recognized. And, upon rereading my original post, it sounded extremely pretentious, and I'd like to apologize for that. I need to find a better way of phrasing my words :)
I live how 8 despite appearing in a movie and minisode (like 3 hours total) he is longest Doctor since he started audios in 2001 and still going strong while other Doctors stories are somewhere in between their 3 year run and are like fanservice in 8 case there is no tenure to begin with so everything happening is not just a good story for those who miss said Doctor but ongoing Cannon episodes like 9 10 or others but with no limit also 8 Doctor is dark people say 10 story is about him slowly going insane but my god 8 whole story is him breaking again and again until he gives up and becomes warrior he goes from happy romantic hero to a broken spiteful man who travels not to see the universe but to find hope in it to cling to only to get it destroyed
If I remember correctly, When I first saw his Doctor, I thought he looked like Beethoven, and I think that's why I gave him that nickname, I actually really love McGann's Doctor because of how mysterious he is, due to not getting a full series on screen and I honestly hope the rumors about the a TV Show is true and that Disney doesn't F***k it up, which most likely would happen anyway, BUT I DON'T CARE!
I watched the Doctor Who TV movie when it aired. It was on a Tuesday night on Fox in the US. That was still a time that Fox was willing to be experimental but they did have legit hit shows on air. But a Tuesday night during Mays sweeps was poor timing and there was no promotional support for this movie to speak of. If there had been some time travel in the story, it might have landed better.
Actually what? I'll assume you're trying to correct my use of the word "essentially", but seeing as the audiobooks have strong sound design by Simon Power, which creates a strong ambience to the reading to great effect, I stand by my choice of word. It is, in essence, correct.
Look up Secrets of the Castle, McGann narrates it, which pumps up my rating of it by 3 points at least. (the other 5 points coming from the fact that it's a medieval documentary)
Well, I'm watching through the Charley Arc to get my way to Zagreus, and I knew the plotline of Seasons of Fear sounded familiar. And yeah.... Yeah.... Yeah, its real tacky.
Let me recommend UA-camr Poparena for that if you don’t follow him already. I’ve only read a handful, but that’s definitely his area of Who expertise. Fun videos too. (I like Lungbarrow though)
I need more context I want to learn more about eight but I cannot pull together your reference to make a full picture Too many loss ends for a newbie fan....
Doan Vu The Lucie Start with ‘Memory Lane’ or ‘Blood of the Daleks’. It’s not that tricky, as 8 has many ‘jumping on’ points and very accessible series.
I'll be honest, I didn't really get all the hype over Rob Shearman's stuff. 🤷♂️ I liked Mary as a companion, I felt she complimented McGann's Edwardian adventurer Doctor better than the others myself. It's just a shame they didn't do many more stories with her.
The best and worst thing about audios is that yes pay the actors but also a certain someone's stance against pirates weren't "yea I get it but please do buy after you listen" it's straight up "if you can't afford it fuck you" was uhhh

@DAVIS RE BIG FINISH STORIES You're not fecking kidding. I've just checked on Spotify and there's ENDLESS and I mean infinite endless stories uploaded by many users. I'm still going to buy Big Finish. But wow. This literally left me with my jaw dropped and my mouth open in amazement. Thank you for the heads up. Because otherwise I'd have never thought of looking for them. The 8th Doctor is, ironically, the most mysterious and inaccessible Doctor. If the 7th was the one who kept his thoughts and plans to himself to win against his enemies then the 8th is open to people while keeping himself at a distance in an emotional way? He has this questioning quality to him where he coaxes people to reveal themselves to him. He's an explorer but I always get the feeling events come to him rather than him getting involved in them. Since the 5th and 7th Doctors are all aware of the Time War in different ways PERHAPS the 8th is the way he is because he knows deep down time is running out? One day he'll be given a choice and he'll never be the same again.
the 7th doctor wasn’t killed in the alley. gallifreyan biology is far too resilient for that. he was killed in the operating room, where they cut him open like a butcher. that, combined with the usage of anesthesia, almost killed him for good. to be honest he lucked out, he only ended up with temporary amnesia.
McGann deserves a live action series so much. Frustrates me how the BBC keep screwing him over. Such a waste of a great Doctor.
Luckily big finish, Novels and comics exist then.
Yeah, just watched the TV movie and I forgot how fantastic he truly was
they could absolutely do an eighth doctor spin off series I'd love to see that
He deserves an animated adventure or something he was looking kinda old in power of the doctor
Aprently the only reason he didn't get a series when the moive came out was because the moive didn't do well in America it did in the uk tho
McGann is sort of a mix of a Modern Who Doctor and also A Classic Who Doctor.

I'm gonna look into some of these :3 I dont have much experience with the 8th doctor and this makes me want to know more
Scherzo & Time War!
Just bought the flood from whsmith, looking forward to reading it
I hope that the next episode involving multiple doctors has the 8th doctor as a major part
The Chibnall and RTD2 eras sent me back to 8 and it's a worthy trade, he's so good that from Big Finish he's probably tied with 12 as my favourite.
"The 7th Doctor shot down in an ally- What the f***?! No... "
I finally found that quote :)
The doctor knows talk no jutsu?!
Steven Dymond BIG TIME.
OH MY GOD I CAME HERE BECAUSE I HEARD SCHERZO A DAY AGO I LOVE IT, AND THEN YOU VALIDATE. NICE
I wish the BBC would give McGann a series finally while he still looks young enough to pull it off. Maybe it would bring the series back from the abyss it's fallen into.
It is a bit ridiculous, but I love seasons of fear, and indeed the Nimon. I would put it in my top five, certainly
I know this video is 4 years old now, but I want to point out that the US also has a bunch of Big Finish stuff on Spotify as well. Really glad about that too, Big Finish is amazing!
2:30 Gah I managed to get choked up over a comic I haven’t read
I enjoyed the TV movie personally, it's not the best but I dont consider it bad
The Conscript actually isn't bad. I'd argue it is genius in that it's small scale keeps it from making the universe smaller. And it's a glimpse into rebellious Academy Doctor. This isn't BF's "Gallifrey".
If you're hesitating on the box set because of that one story, my advice is go for it.
I was listening to your reading of the comic thinking of how sad and beautiful the story was and than I got an Arby’s add
*Sees No Alien Bodies, Year of Superintelligent Tigers, or Camera Obscura*
Shame
Also, Google just tried to autocorrect Chibnall to Chin Balls.
jakerockznoodles My video on Torchwood is just gushing. Adore it.
Chris Chin Balls 🤣🤣
I would have loved that to pieces-- I feel like the costuming has been a little stale recently!
Brb, photoshopping victorian gentleman garb onto Whittaker
You can watch more of the 8th Doctor's adventures in Hornblower: Mutiny
It's interesting watching these again when I've listened to a bunch of these. I really didn't like Seasons of Fear but I thought Phobos was alright. I didn't love the Silver Turk as much as others seem to though.
Hopefully the best is yet to come if the spin-off is true.
Paul McGanns run is his big finish audio run. I love it and his tv movie and the 50th special together make one of the best doctor's run.
8 is a classic, tragic byronic hero archetype and that's what I love him for
My top 10:
1. Storm Warning
2. The Chimes of Midnight
3. Horror of Glam Rock
4. An Earthly Child
5. Neverland
6. Zagreus
7. Sisters of the Flame/Vengeance of Morbius
8. Blood of the Daleks
9. Night of the Doctor
OMFG THANK YOU, MY FAV DOCTOR FINALLY!
Ben Welsh hope it was satisfying! 7th Doctor vid is imminent.
Yes, Doctor with most interesting character development coming up!
I heard the words 'the flood' and I was so happy because I bought the collection and loved it
FYI, most of the audio books can be found on Spotify for free in the US as well
There are thousands and less than 100 are free. That's not most.
Whoopsie daisy
@@benjaminhollister3124 Also, not many of the good ones are on Spotify in my opinion. In my opinion, most of the free ones suck.
I live how 8 despite appearing in a movie and minisode (like 3 hours total) he is longest Doctor since he started audios in 2001 and still going strong while other Doctors stories are somewhere in between their 3 year run and are like fanservice in 8 case there is no tenure to begin with so everything happening is not just a good story for those who miss said Doctor but ongoing Cannon episodes like 9 10 or others but with no limit
also 8 Doctor is dark
people say 10 story is about him slowly going insane but my god 8 whole story is him breaking again and again until he gives up and becomes warrior he goes from happy romantic hero to a broken spiteful man who travels not to see the universe but to find hope in it to cling to only to get it destroyed
actually the longest continuing doctor is 7th tv run from 87-89, tv movie in 96 BEGAN big finish in 99 and is STILL going!
Agree with you wholheartedly on The Time War but the 8th Doctor/ Lucie Miller duo is one of the very best on audio and would be great on TV.
I did a what if video where history was changed to have McGann as the Doctor during the events of Series 1
Where do you get your music for your videos? Its gorgeous
I actually really liked season of fear.
But totally agree with you about the conscript
Nimon rhymes with Simon, and Big Finish produce full-cast audio dramas not audiobooks, which are essentially someone reading a story out loud.
Andrew Bowman Um actually
Actually what? I'll assume you're trying to correct my use of the word "essentially", but seeing as the audiobooks have strong sound design by Simon Power, which creates a strong ambience to the reading to great effect, I stand by my choice of word. It is, in essence, correct.
Andrew Bowman google “um actually”
The dislikes are from hardcore Nimon fans
that episode 3 song was funny, as it was the 7th Doctor who tricked Davros into Destroying the planet of Skaro.
Look up Secrets of the Castle, McGann narrates it, which pumps up my rating of it by 3 points at least. (the other 5 points coming from the fact that it's a medieval documentary)
Capaldi on your attractive doctor list? Give him the foxy grandpa hat.
Well, I'm watching through the Charley Arc to get my way to Zagreus, and I knew the plotline of Seasons of Fear sounded familiar.
And yeah.... Yeah.... Yeah, its real tacky.
Blackadder Back & Forth but taken seriously
8 and Charlie are my favorite, right ahead of 7 and Ace, 12 and Clare and Nardole
As a trial could thay do 1 season with paul and see if it does well
What are the best PDA/EDA books you can recommend ??? I'm trying to read more of them.
Let me recommend UA-camr Poparena for that if you don’t follow him already. I’ve only read a handful, but that’s definitely his area of Who expertise. Fun videos too. (I like Lungbarrow though)
The Doctor that people bearly mention:the 8th doctor
Imagine...he was the 14th Doctor...and we had 4 TV episodes with him...
I need more context
I want to learn more about eight but I cannot pull together your reference to make a full picture
Too many loss ends for a newbie fan....
I liked Mary as a companion, I felt she complimented McGann's Edwardian adventurer Doctor better than the others myself. It's just a shame they didn't do many more stories with her.
The best and worst thing about audios is that yes pay the actors but also a certain someone's stance against pirates weren't "yea I get it but please do buy after you listen" it's straight up "if you can't afford it fuck you" was uhhh
also rip silver turk in canon but let's blame faction paradox
I thought the half human reference were the interference of Faction Paradox.
They start to mess with the Doctor past .
Thanks for the spotify tip
Is Spotify really free, if you live in the U.K.?
12:07 what song is that?
Best
5.horror of glam rock

3.part 3 of the time war volume one because I couldn't put the other 2 their
2.phobos
1.doctor who tv movie
Who at Big Finish decided to call the last story "Dark Eyes: Eye of Darkness"?
@@Jedi_Spartan Can't wait for Doctor Who: Who is the Doctor?
Um actually
