anyway i'm glad that people agree with my takes in this video because i lack the critical thinking skills to understand why i don't like certain stories. i don't normally make doctor who content, i just play games on my switch for fun. happy to see this is being shared around though^^

@@merrynesther I will say, that while I am not fond of Time of the Daleks, I do like Embrace the Darkness.
I think the main thing I remember from it is how they turn that woman into the pilot dalek and keep their promise by giving the dalek version of her the works of Shakespeare creepy and a clear nod to maxtaball in evil of the daleks

“Time of the Daleks” is like, 5 or 6 really good Dalek stories thrown into one Dalek story and thus becomes a bad Dalek story.

@@HOTD108_Army of Ghosts/Doomsday is 3 separate ideas that just kind of happen at each other (Cult of Skaro, Daleks vs Cybermen, and Daleks Reborn) and none of them really get room to breathe… yet. That season finale is honestly kind of a mess (even though the emotions, charm, and performances carry it to victory despite the structural issues)
Um… Into The Dalek is half a story, does that count?
@@HOTD108_ Victory of the Daleks is kind of like Ressurection of the Daleks, Power of the Daleks and that one comic that was originally meant to be set in WWII but got rewritten to be WWI.

You think The Last is weak? It‘s one of my favourites. I don‘t think Doctor Who has ever been so hopeless and bleak (except maybe World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls) and it‘s perfectly pulled off, and:

@@merrynesther In my mind, the whole thing developed this really bleak, really oppressive atmosphere, death decay around everything in C’Rizz and Charlie’s segments, and things getting sort of Terry Gilliam-esq whenever that self-obsessed President was “onscreen” (I always imagining her looking like the elderly mom that was constantly getting cosmetic surgery to deage herself in Terry Gilliam’s Brazil).
Of course, the first time I listened to “The Last”, I was a passenger in a car, on my way to what would become my new home after years of living in a completely different US state, so listening to this dour and depressing audio drama ended up *_lifting_* my spirits because it helped me realize my problems were small, petty, and entirely shaped by my own negative outlook, by comparison.
I listened to the right story, at just the right time, so I always had more patience for its faults as a result. And frankly it just helps to listen to horror stories in dark rooms at night regardless of quality, it really sets the mood.
The Last is my favorite 8th story not written by Rob Shearman, it is an absolute CRIME to put it in the same category as Twilight Kingdom.
i love to come back here once a week and continue a little further in the video as i listen to more and more

yeah that's cool. had anyone else made it video, it probably would have gotten more credit. i just have a bit of a bias against dalek stories and i don't like them as much as most people do.
Terra Firma has one of my favorite McGann scenes when he, Charley and C'rizz first encounter Davros and the Daleks. It's just so cheeky, I love it.

Way to fix Time of the Daleks: Remove the Daleks entirely.
You see when I last listened to it (which admittedly was about a year ago and was also for the first time) there was one line that really caught my attention (and please note I may be remembering it wrong but this was the general gist):
''In order to preserve Shakespeare we have to make sure he never exists.''
This is actually really interesting to me because as quite a critical person, when I'm watching a show that has gone significantly downhill since it began, I sometimes think 'if only it hadn't started it was never have been ruined.' So really what the story would have been far better as is a story where The Doctor and Charley stumble upon a group of people trying to travel back in time to trap Shakespeare before he begins writing so his plays can't ever be heard of and can only be experienced in a pocket universe, and perhaps when Shakespeare finds out he tries to escape and the climax would be The Doctor and Charley trying to return Shakespeare to his home.
Same thoughts as me!
I've started listening to the 8th Doctor stories, but I've chosen to start with Blood of the Daleks rather than Storm Warning. The very idea that I might some day have to try and understand Zagreus scares me too much.

@@merrynesther definitely, it’s likely one of the reasons why I haven’t gone back to listen to the rest of the 8th Doctor audios in ages. A bad drama at least something visual to look at to keep you engaged, an audio drama doesn’t have that so if it’s boring you’re also going to be completely lost & have no idea what’s going on
@@BH-98 yeah the monthly range can be a real pain in the ass to trek through but the gems like chimes, seasons of fear and caerdroia make it worth it imo. completely understand why you'd give up tho, that was me for the first year of me trying to get into them lmao
I've been listening to these on and off for a few years now, just finished Scherzo. I remember quite liking Embrace the Darkness and Time of Daleks. I can't remember what happens in the latter, but I remember enjoying it. So far the only dud in my experience has been the Sword of Orion, and that was simply because I thought it was a bit dull.
I’m using this video as a guide to what to skip and what to listen to
imo you probably shouldn't because there's some in this video that i said i hated but are essential to the overall story like creed of the kromon, for example. i wouldn't really advise skipping any of them if this is your first time listening.

But Embrace the darkness is streets ahead of creed or Absolution, imo.

Seasons of Fear is god tier Doccy Who
I’ve listened to Storm Warning, Sword of Orion, Chimes of Midnight, Time of the Daleks, Neverland, attempted Zagreus, Scherzo, Faith Stealer, Terror Firma, Scaredy Cat, Memory Lane, Time Works, and The Girl Who Never Was.
Storm Warning is erm, a story, it does it’s job and I love the cast.
Sword of Orion low key I can’t remember.
Chimes of Midnight is possibly my favorite Doctor Who story.
Time of the Daleks is so boring because it really just feels like they CTRL + c CTRL + V-ed Evil of the Daleks
Neverland is a weird wacky wonderful and WILD story. Loved the Easter egg mention of Terserus at the beginning.
Zagreus is actually the most confused I’ve ever been in my life. Gave up after part one.
Scherzo is actually the most uncomfortable I’ve been watching, listening, or reading to Doctor Who in my life. No idea why people love it so much.

Terror Firma is probably the most fun I’ve had listening to a Dalek story.
Time Works is so good I love it.
Memory Lane is erm… something. It’s enjoyable but it’s quite the ride.
The Girl Who Never Was is one of the most incredibly well put together and heartbreaking companion goodbyes with some solid action by my favorite Doctor Who baddies. The timey-wimey nature and the way in which the Doctor decides it’s time to move on and let Charlie on her own is some of the most incredible stuff written by Alan Barnes.

Never really got the hype about Chimes or Scherzo.
One is too overly sentimental, and the other relies on cheap jump scares.

fair enough. i don't really like embrace the darkness that much at all but i can see why people like it.
He needed to be more over the top for the Chimes of Midnight because it's overrated. The 8th Doctor as part of the monthly range was window dressing. The 8th doctor doesn't really start at Big finish until the EDAs start with Blood of the Daleks.
it's based off of my own opinions and i genuinely liked chimes and don't think it's overrated at all so-
I actually agree, the Eighth Doctor monthlies weakest part is the Eighth doctor. Charely and C'rizz are just so much better.
I actually much prefer the monthlies over the EDAs imo. The EDAs were more consistent, but the Charlie era just had a ton of incredible stories that the EDAs were never on the same level as until the 4th series.
I agree about Chimes.
Don't really get the big orgasm over Rob Shearman. 🤷♂️
