On my 6th and final tour of duty in Afghanistan the night before I came home with my unit 2nd/75th Rangers I loaded my tunes for the long long ass trip home and the first song was this exact song. I knew I'd never go back as I was ending my career with the army after 24 years. This song has true deep meaning to me. This band got me thru some messed up times while over seas. Thank you Pearl Jam 🙏. It's good to be alive!
Thank you for your services(intentionally plural). So pleased to know you made it home. I am an old-timer who served in Vietnam, 1969, Mekong Delta, 9th Infantry Div, 4th Battalion, 31st Brigade. And 30 years after ETS I first hear this song and resonates with me especially because I had never realized 58,000 brothers and sisters had come home in a box or a bag. I'm 72 years old now and frequently listen to this song, any version. And cannot tell you why; not anger. Maybe to keep the memory of the horrors of war alive that I might educate my grandchildren. Be well.
Wow! I would "dude your awesome"! Now, I personally feel that any military man should be addressed with the utmost respect! I greatly thank you sir, and to think, you were an Army Ranger?!?!?! Wow!!! Extremely impressive!!! And to think that, one of the greatest songs ever written, Yellow Ledbetter would provide much needed peace and joy to a man who was willing to sacrifice everything for his country! I have no idea who you are, but I am very proud of you and proud that we have soldiers like you, defending our freedom and country.
Wow, 6 tours as a ranger. A lot of people won't recognize the magnitude of your resume. Hope your transition back is going OK and you're doing well. Thanks for your service, brother.
Eddie is goddamn national treasure. I don't agree with a lot of his politics but I would cherish a hangout session with that man. @Vinicius, It's about a man who just found out that his brother died at war. He gets emotional and drunk and decides to go out for a walk. While out for the walk, he sees an elderly couple with an American flag out on the porch, and he waves to them. But instead of waving, they just kind of look down at the long haired guy waving at them. "Oh yeah, can you see them, out on the porch? Yeah, but they don't wave. I see them 'round the front way, yeah. And I know, and I know I don't wanna stay. Make me cry." This makes him more emotional. "I don't know whether I'm the boxer or the bag." That's why the tenor of the song is so sad... Eddie Vedder admitted that he recorded the song when he was a bit drunk, so he's not quite sure what the exact words were, lol, so they're ever changing. If you notice, you rarely hear the same exact lyrics from show to show. The chorus does seem to stay the same, though. Hope that explains it for you. ❤
