    I admit I prefer the look of the 285s, but the 265s are probably better for my lifestyle since my Tacoma spends 95% of its life on asphalt or concrete and I should care more about fuel economy than off-road traction. Also, since I live in the midwest where we deal with a lot of snow, the larger contact patch of the 285s would actually work against me (although likely not in a meaningful way).

    • @jcguevara4465
      @jcguevara4465 2 роки тому +4

      Why would they be bad in snow?

    • @Phormify
      @Phormify 2 роки тому +12

      @@jcguevara4465 A wider tire can distribute the weight across a larger area. This works as an advantage often, but in snow covered roads it can sometimes result in worse performance as the tires tend to ride over the snow instead of through the snow. I've heard people call it the "pizza cutter effect" where a skinny tire will actually do better in deep snow because it cuts through it whereas a wide tire floats above it and won't have as much traction (since snow offers no traction whatsoever). That said, a wider tire might perform better on ice and in other conditions where distributing the weight across a larger area works to your advantage.

      @@jcguevara4465 if you look at Paris Dakar or bad weather rally tyres, those are very narrow. Wide tyre will float more over the loose surface while a narrow tyre will to dig in (mud, sand or snow) and get to the hard stuff, or will be less likely to suffer from aqua planning. Of course this is extreme racing but underlines the reasons. Wide tyres are better on dry surface and for stopping power. Altough a wide mud tyre will have significantly less contact surface than a narrower AT or Highway tyre.
      If you look at those classic 4wd that have crossed Africa for decades (old landrover and landcruiser 70,s) those always had narrow tyres.
      Wide tyres may look cool and trendy, that does not make it a superior tyres, just better in certain applications.

    I like my 265 70 17 Falken Wildpeaks. I dont like rock crawling but do enjoy offroading on scenic trails, including sand and snow, and the 31 inch Wildpaks have been great for that. i'm getting a decent 16 to 17 city and 22 to 23 flat highway but more AC usage lowers that.

  • @addonisryan

    It all comes down to what's more important to you. I prefer the smaller tires. Better fuel mileage, less wind resistance,more proper speedometer calibration, and narrower tires cut through mud and s b ow more easily, along with less rolling resistance and better power usage.

    285 is the width of the tire in millimeters, the second number is the tires profile, so 70 would be 70 percent of 285 mm.

    You failed to mention the *aspect* ratio of each tire, for a proper comparison - An OEM 265/65R17 compared to a
    '285'/_ _)R17 ?? I'll take a chance here and guess that you mean a 285 / *70* R17.
    The section width of the '265' is 10.43" (That's not the *TREAD* width, folks) and the section width of the '285' is 11.22". The overall height is approximately 30.56" for the 265/65R17, while the overall height is approximately 32.70". That's a 2.14" difference in height, yet only barely over 1" more ground.
    Among many other things - I mount, balance and repair tires at my current job and have been doing so (on/off) well over 30 years now. I've run many different size tires on my personal vehicles and have test-driven countless others. With that said - In my personal experience - a 70-series tires simply rides much smoother than an 65-series. Simple rule of thumb is that the more sidewall (height) you have - the less your vehicle will ride like a tank.
    I think the reason manufactures switched most trucks, light trucks and especially SUV's to shorter / stiffer sidewalls is because most people never see off-road and the shorter / stiffer tires will handle better at speeds above 65mph on the freeways.
    Now - if you love the look of huge rims with low-profile / aggressive tread (BLECH!) - You 'could opt for installing something silly like a 275/45R22 - which will have a height of around 31.74" (a littler over an inch taller than the OEM 265/65R17). But as I've just said - they'll ride really rough and just wreak havoc on your stock suspension.
    Please note that the 285/70R17 will fit on newer Tacomas - But you may have to trim the front fender liners.
    If it were me - personally - I would much rather enjoy the LOOK and the BETTER RIDE QUALITY of 285/70R17's, than the OEM 265/65R17's - and your speedometer will only be off, by less than 5mph.
    Make sure when your buying ANY new set of tires, that all the DOT numbers are close to being manufactured within the same year - - As sometimes - a tire/service center or even distributor will have three tires manufactured within the same current year - and you might just get one that's a year or more older. The last FOUR digits of a tire's DOT (the longer number - on one side only) will tell you the week (first 2 digits) and the year (last 2 digits) in which that tire was manufactured.
    Ask BEFOREHAND that they be sure to change out your TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) *Valve Stems* with new ones. Most professional / reputable shops will do this at no added charge, as it should be included with the cost of the new tires.
    Please hose-off / thoroughly clean your truck's wheels BEFORE having your new tires installed, as heavy deposits of dirt / mud / brake dust / grease on the INSIDE of the rims will affect the adhesion of the balancing tape weights - and most likely piss off the service tech assigned to your vehicle.
    ASK BEFOREHAND that their service tech to either tighten ALL lug nuts BY HAND, or at the very least - gun them on LIGHTLY with their shop's impact gun and then torque them to factory specs. If the torque wrench doesn't slightly move the lug nut as they're applying force to it, then they're already gunned on too tight. This can cause you issues, should you have to remove them by hand to install your spare - and not having an even toque setting on all lug nut may even (over time) warp your brake disc rotors.
    Keep your expensive new tires clean front AND back and don't use solvent-based tire dressings - The petroleum distillates in the formula actually leach essentials chemicals and oils out of your tires, which can/will lead to premature cracking / fading. Use only water-based tire dressings and please DON'T use any tire dressing at all, if you haven't first thoroughly scrubbed your tires with soap / water and rinsed well. Tire dressing on top of embedded dirt / brake dust only will eventually lead to your sidewalls becoming a slimy mess... (And yet another way to piss-off the technician who is assigned to rotating / balancing your new tires.
    When you bring your tires in for rotation - Ask that they not only rotate, but re-balance ALL FOUR tires. Most places simply will balance the ones getting rotated to the FRONT, so the ones going to the rear might go over 10,000 miles without getting re-balanced - and by that time, due to excessive wear and neglect and failure to maintain recommended air pressures - your expensive set of tires are now irregularly worn pieces of junk.
    That's the tip of the iceberg on 'my' advice. ;)

    I just crested 50k with my trd 4x4. Because I am not a rock crawler but I do travel a lot on rough/dirt roads and I travel long distances I went a different route. I swapped out the stock Goodyear Wrangler 265/70/16 to lighter weight all-terrain to Cooper Discoverer 245/75/16. The benefit of this is mpg for example I just got gas in Seattle after traveling from Bend Oregon and my ending mpg was 23.7. My average around town and even towing my lightweight low profile trailer for work is between 18.5 -20 mpg. My best mpg so far is 25.9 hwy. Basically having skinnier tires = less rolling resistance and being lighter all helps with mpg. With my stock tires I could not drive above 62mph without the mpg taking a dive and now I can at least go the 70mph speed limit. My next tires will be Nokian all-terrain because they are 32pds each so I should see even more mpg improvement.

    It also affects the overall gearing. Your car won’t roll as a slowly when crawling over obstacles in high or low range. Tyres that are too big can really play havoc with cars that have a manual transmission when you’re trying to crawl in gear and stay off the clutch.

    I love when people refer to tire height using the three digit width number. The 265 and 285 on these tires is the width in mm’s the second 2 digit number on the tire size is the aspect ratio, which is the height of the sidewall as a percentage of the width. 60%, 70%, 75%. The secret number for full tire formula to inches is .0394! Like this…
    285x.0394=11.229 (inches wide) 11.229x.70=7.86 (inches of sidewall beyond rim) 7.86x2=15.72 (inches of side wall above and below rim…or side and side) 15.72”+17”=32.72” (overall height of tire and wheel). So a 285/70r17 is 32.72” tall and 11.23” wide at footprint with 7.86” sidewalls. Remember that number .0394! It’s the constant in the conversion formula.

  • @CraigG21

    285 and 265 are the just the widths of the tire, and do not make your speed off. The overall tire diameter can cause the error in your speedo if different than stock; this is determined by the diameter of the wheel/rim and the height of the tire which is the width of the tread multiplied by the aspect ratio of the tire x 2.

      @eneveasi I’ve had pretty well any size you can think of from stock to 40’s over the years. But for a daily driver that you take off-road, 255/80/17’s are lighter, don’t have the rubbing issues, are taller, are better on fuel, don’t require regearing as much(though I would still re gear) and don’t suffer in the performance department at all. And there are folks that will dispute that. But I’ll meet them in the back country any day and hold my own with my “pizza cutters.” Honestly, if there is a “performance advantage” for 285’s over 255’s, I’m not a talented enough driver to EVER notice. And I drive for a living. 255’s are cheaper in more ways than just purchase price, and are just as good and better in many ways. Very much recommend.

    265 and 285 are the widths. The reason the 285 is taller is because the sidewall is a ratio of section width. So with same sidewall, a wider section width will have a larger diameter. It's misleading to say "285 provide more ground clearance than 265" without mentioning the sidewall.

I use my truck for pulling a smaller 5x10 enclosed trailer, i don't do much off-roading & if I do the Tacoma will keep up just fine cuz I'm just using it to go out shooting not to purposely go 4-wheel driving.
