Dream Theater is my favourite band for the last 25 years.
And it's always interesting to see how people react listening to their music for the first time.
They play so many different kinds of music, from heavy and complex, to progressive and epic, to soft and peaceful.
So if you had listened to The Glass Prison for example you would have a completely different reaction and you would not believe it's the same band that wrote this exact song.
But apart from that i really enjoyed your reaction to this. Your focus, your enthusiasm, and your love for what you hear was so original and true that made me smile watching you.
This song is indeed a beautiful ballad from them, and it's always getting love when it's played live.
They surely know how to compose music that creates so many emotions to people.
Another song you could react to at some other time, would be Barstool Warrior or Breaking all illusions.
You are not going to be disappointed either way, i can guarantee that.
    Much love from Greece!

    Very truly reactions.
Welcome to the Dream theater world.
Spirit Carry ,Yes it's a ballad.
    Dream theater is Metal?
    No!
They are Progressive Metal, ( they are founder of that genre).
Spirit Carry on, it's a part of Story.
It's one song of the album "Scene from memory".
It's a concept album , theatrically It's only one long song but, like the opera, is divide in 2 act and nine scene.
"Spirit Carry on" it's the scene eight, penultimate track.
Most of Dream theater songs are "hard" or "Metal". some part "Dark metal" but they had done also lot of "soft" song.
On the long carrier they had touch a lot of time the death theme, the most beautiful song about, in mine opinion, Are:
"A change of season" , dedicate at the premature death in airplane disaster of the drummers mother.
"The best of time": Dedicate to drummers father that is die due a cancer, Drummer had write the song during the father still alive , but he is die before it was complete.
Remember most of the song is not easy listening, continuous tempo change, continuous change key, and not a simple riff, but almost all the lyric is great and are connected to the music.
    After all It's Progressive Metal.
If you want listen how they can do, i suggest :
"Octavarium" ( live version it's amazing), a roller coaster of type of music , start for classic , and touch almost all genre in only one song.
"Illuminations theory" ( live at Boston opera ),
Metropolis part one ( live at Boston opera)
    "Count of Tuscany"
Due they had done 15 album in over 35 years of carrier you have a lot of song to choice, and during all this years every album had Dream Theater touch, but different feeling sometime more Metal sometime more Progressive .
Last thing, all member are very skilled musician, Everyone is among the best at playing their instrument.

Dream Theater has always been one of my favorite bands along with Maiden, Priest and Rush. They are all virtuosoes on their instruments, yet they have so much feelings in their songs. 4:23 Dream Theater's original name was Majesty bu they had to change it for copyright reasons. Without going into too much detail, as many comments have already covered the basics, yes, these guys are very musically inclined. They were formed by meeting while attending Berklee College of Music in New York City. Their "progressive" style, meaning they don't follow traditional song timings etc is a hallmark of theirs and a reflection of their talent, especially their drummer here, Mike Portnoy, who was the youngest drummer to ever be inducted into the Drummer Hall of Fame. I had the privilege of seeing them twice live in Philadelphia, both around Christmas time when they do their rendition of "O Holy Night," which can be found here on youtube.
If you would like to listen to something different of theirs, you can try "Stream of Consciousness." Just look for the version here on youtube that is titled, "Live at Budokan." It's an instrumental with no singing, but very well-produced and an awesome song. Kinda like a prog-metal version of Metallica's "Orion"...which is heavier, but also an awesome tune.

  • @vhaarr
    @vhaarr Місяць тому

Someone else has probably mentioned it by now but the singer ruptured his vocal cords in 1994 and so what you're hearing here is after his long recovery. He's not able to hit the high notes here that he could on the recorded album, which is even more beautiful because it's more atmospheric compared to the live version and more of the background music comes through.
The whole album is worth listening to. Almost every song is as emotional as this, or more.
