This is why I cherish my Samsung Galaxy S5 I bought all those years ago! It was mostly downhill for Samsung in repairability from there, still, that said, they have not gone as badly as Apple has with the iphone13!!! Samsung's latest phones are way better than the GS5 in most other areas (not all....tho, some things on the GS5 are still better than any brand new phone - this is coming from me, I own a Z Flip 3 5G, great phone, but the GS5 is better!

God it’s so frustrating how the insides of the current iPhones work. They’re super modular and THEORETICALLY easy to swap parts out, but then reality sets in with proprietary screws, the AMOUNT of screws, software locks, etc so actually getting to the parts and getting them out is a hassle
It's because they want to make it easier for their genius bar repair guys to be trained to repair the devices but not easy enough for third parties to do it. They want to sell extended warranties.

Nice restoration of the iPhone 2G! The older devices are designed to be repaired easier, unlike the newer models which are deliberately designed to be more of a pain, whether it be through hardware (needing to heat up a glued on display/back cover, proprietary security screws, and glued in batteries) or through software (software locks that throw up warnings or break functionality even when using genuine parts). The only part I don't like about the iPhone 2G is the soldered battery, and the fact that it is 2G only, not having even 3G...
My first iphone was a 2g. Now i still have a somewhat working 2g 16gb. Only thing wrong with it is the touch of the screen is faulty. Like it is worn out.
That is why I do not buy Apple products, either in my personal life or for recording/editing/mixing/mastering my band's music! Using Apple's ecosystem would be a literal HELL! @@MrDantab1980 Over priced and you never really own anything that Apple have made using slave labour in China, if you watch Hugh's channel you will see how replacing certain components removes functionality of cameras and fingerprint readers etc. even with genuine Apple components, the cons out way pros, even this new model has a relatively low capacity battery compared to most Samsung LG and many more. for example my Samsung Galaxy has a 7000 ma. battery can support 2 sim cards or on sim and a micro sd card for expansion, mine is the A12 low cost model £138 (UKP)

This implies that you remove the right side first to make space, then when you pull on the left one, which has the bend, you need to change the direction of the pulling force midway through the pull. You'll have to estimate when the pull tab has reached the turn, then move your hand towards the right to keep the pulling force aligned with the tab direction (the line of contact, where it is being unstuck). By this method, which will involve skill (i.e. timing the turn), and initially luck, perhaps the left side tab can be removed without it breaking. In summary, keep the force aligned with the tab (i.e. perpendicular to the line of contact where it is being unstuck). Dimes to dollars, Apple did all this on purpose. Horrific...
Great restoration of the 2G! I just wanted to mention that if you wanted a battery that is more similar to the original capacity of that phone you can always get a Huawei HB5K1H Battery (1400mAh), fits perfectly, just gotta route the wires right over the battery, worked great in my restoration when I had difficulty finding a good replacement battery. I have quite a few pictures as well. Hope you may find this useful!!

Impressive but I enjoy his repair/restoration videos on older devices more than comparisons such as this one. I enjoy seeing old/broken things brought back to life.
I went into our Apple store in July of 2008 prepared to fork over $500 for one of those fancy iPhones and was delighted to find out the new 3G was in the store, and it had GPS!!! Also, the App Store debuted with that phone, and there were a host of other additions or improvements. But the best part was that I got out of there with $300 still in my pocket! It had come down to $199 from $499. I was so excited that on the way home I turned around and went back to pick up a second 3G for my wife. We used those phones until October of 2014. We still have them, and they work perfectly. They just don't have SIM cards, and we really need to figure out how to downgrade the iOS to something that makes them less logy. Our next phones were 6 Plusses. We used those (and still have them in perfect physical condition, too) until this past summer. We have 11s now. They were a lot cheaper than the current 13, and there was nothing at all compelling about the 13 to make us want to pony up the extra cash for them.
if you remove the screws before you place it on the heat pad then that would theoretically make it esier to remove the screen because your giving it less time to cool.
Great strip down of the original 2G iPhone. I have one in my collection which although not 100% mint is significantly tidier than Hugh’s and still boots up on its original 2007 battery. I haven’t felt the necessity to strip it down consequently but this is a good reference video. I’d take issue that you need a laser or complete strip down to replace the back glass on a newer iPhone it can be done with a heat gun & tweezers/scraper. I’ve done it on an XS Max although it’s time consuming & not for the faint hearted! I’ve seen dry ice used as a technique as well!
6:05 Seems to be a solder bridge being created from the red wire's solder pad to the nearby metal. Hopefully not, or hopefully it cures itself when the new battery wire is soldered into place.

My iPhone 4 has never been opened, has the original battery! I use it as a radio, TalkRadio. Its in mint condition. I recently got the 13 pro to replace my 6S which has served me well for 5 years. The 6S has been through 3 batteries!

tri wing aren’t security screws… i think you’re confusing it with torx security screws which have a little post in the middle to prevent normal torx bits from being used.

I dunno, call me crazy, but I think the iPhone 1 is easier to change the battery than the iPhone 13. I'd rather desolder and resolder 3 wires than deal with breaking pull tabs, alcohol, and having to pry up on the battery but not too much that I deform the shape and risk a fire.
Why does Apple make the inside of the phone pretty (A13 and Taptic Engine writing) when it is not intended to be opened by someone else than an Apple authorized repair center?
As much as I love watching your videos, I have no interest in repairing any of my iPhones, beginning from 2008 & iPads or only 1 MacBook. (Sorry to all those critics of Apple products) Simple reason for this...I guess I’ve been lucky and never needed repairs on them. While I’ve damaged (cracked) screens on a few, I just purchase a later model or take the hand me downs from one of my kids. I always buy a transparent cover for them which folds around the bezel for protection. Without a word of a lie, they all worked until I upgraded. While many are no longer supported they still power up. As long as plugged into power. (Batteries dead) I’m currently using an iPhone 7plus. I have no plans to upgrade as it has no damage & works perfectly. I charge it once every day or 2nd day unless I do a lot of videos, ph calls etc. Mostly I txt and take photos, watch UA-cam etc. I still have the original boxes they came in, except for those my kids threw out😩. Some of my devices look as good as new. They are expensive so I treat them as such. Cheers to all the Apple haters. An apple a day keeps the repair man away.
Awesome video Hugh I once bought a phone from a pawn shop and it was a stolen one after o had tried to set it up I called the network provider and they confirmed that it was stolen and informed the police luckily I had a receipt for it but I had to return it to the rightful owner and I lost nearly 300 pounds etc

The 1st gen could record video, the limitation was just software based. I remember jailbreaking my phone and being able to record video

Why does Apple make the inside of the phone pretty (A13 and Taptic Engine writing) when it is not intended to be opened by someone else than an Apple authorized repair center?

As much as I love watching your videos, I have no interest in repairing any of my iPhones, beginning from 2008 & iPads or only 1 MacBook. (Sorry to all those critics of Apple products)
Simple reason for this...I guess I’ve been lucky and never needed repairs on them. While I’ve damaged (cracked) screens on a few, I just purchase a later model or take the hand me downs from one of my kids.
I always buy a transparent cover for them which folds around the bezel for protection.
Without a word of a lie, they all worked until I upgraded. While many are no longer supported they still power up. As long as plugged into power. (Batteries dead)
I’m currently using an iPhone 7plus. I have no plans to upgrade as it has no damage & works perfectly. I charge it once every day or 2nd day unless I do a lot of videos, ph calls etc. Mostly I txt and take photos, watch UA-cam etc. I still have the original boxes they came in, except for those my kids threw out😩. Some of my devices look as good as new. They are expensive so I treat them as such. Cheers to all the Apple haters. An apple a day keeps the repair man away.

How they can make the new phone so complicated and small with a beautiful layout blows my mind. The first generation phone looks crude in comparison.
Actually the 1st gen iPhone is called the iPhone 2G considering that the first iPhone had 2G network
Awesome video Hugh I once bought a phone from a pawn shop and it was a stolen one after o had tried to set it up I called the network provider and they confirmed that it was stolen and informed the police luckily I had a receipt for it but I had to return it to the rightful owner and I lost nearly 300 pounds etc
