@@Techmej fair. Laptops would make more sense. They're less modular and have multiple different standards but you can at least upgrade the storage, ram, or WiFi Card on a modern one. If the battery goes bad, I can change it to something better

It's a matter of signing certificate, not physical repair. For security reason the parts are certificate signed. And give Apple certificates to third parties is like giving you home keys to your mechanic. Third party can do everything they want with the certificates, that means a security flaw great like a black hole. Not even Apple do this, also Android phones with an high level of security. And even Apple cannot repair the parts, they simply change them. Some of them are low in the key chain and can be simply replaced with a part with a valid certificate. Some of them, like FaceID, have certificates that are related to the motherboard. That means that Apple changes motherboard and FaceID at one time, thus giving you a new phone is the same result. But that's why violate FaceID via software is so hard, if it was done. At this time, as I know, on a vanilla phone not jailbreaked FaceID cannot be violated, as even the TPM chip, but I can be wrong on this. For sure, it's really hard to do this, and requires some good bunch of tech, not the average genius guy of the shop of next street.

You're confusing with the fact that you sync your device with your account. If you can change the signing certificate by your own, it's easy to store the phone of someone, replace it with compromised hardware, resync, and give it back to the user. All the story behind the certificate and the asymmetric cryptography behind this is that the private key used to sign the hardware is in Apple only hands. Without it, you cannot generate another certificate. It's the basics of security and how it works for hardware secure boot, signing, TLS, HTTPS and whatever uses certificates. It's also strongly secure, because if Apple revoke the keys behind the certificates and a revoked hardware connects to the internet, it stop to works. This is good if hardware result compromised at the source. Also, analogue case of use happen in Europe, where some certificates used to create COVID-19 green passes had been stolen and used to manufacture false certificates. EU revoked the keys, and all the false certificates failed to verify. Hardware signing works like this as well, but currently on iOS uses only keys that are shared between OS, key hardware as FaceID and motherboard. On Secure Boot devices, instead, keys are upgraded at boot. On iOS, key signing is also used on application, which cannot be executed if not signed using a valid Apple certificate. As per the hardware, on your development machine you ask for the certificate, but the one who emits it is Apple. Private keys of the certificate are in Apple own hands, to the opposite of Google Play where you use a used to provide a self signed certificate. But this led to the fact that a lot of malware was published and Google switched to a model similar to the one of Apple, where you require the certificate and Google provides it to you. Well, on iPhone, iMac, iPad, high class Samsung devices, high class Dell devices, Lenovo, Microsoft Surface, and every piece of hardware were security is an issue for the use who buy this class of devices, certificate signed hardware and Secure Boot is the standard way of do things. Don't play smart with me, I'm a software engineer, I develop and design software on every architecture possible and security issues are my bread of life. @@AlessandroMorvillo Apple has simple tool to resign everything in phone long as parts are genuine replacements, hell even some non-apple technicians have tools to transfer identification data from one display to another, it works on anything up to iPhone 12 (apple has tools for iP13 too). Also it takes them 5 seconds to do so.

You know strangely this reminds me of my electronic engineering days, where they taught us how to make robust, modular machines so that their parts could be replaced, if some parts died mid operation the device would still work, and how a person with the most basic repair kit should be able to understand and to fix it easily. I study mechanical engineering, and this video was used as the perfect example how to NOT create a product. Design for disassembly is gonna be one of the biggest factors in reducing emissions and trash build up

Companies will exploit popular movements for money, an action which often takes away from the credibility of said movements, no matter how good the cause or important the issue is. The disabling of features when replacing components with verified, brand new components, is shamelessly disgusting. Steve Wozniak spoke on right to repair and how he used to be able to repair tvs, radios, etc just heading to a Radio shack or similar electronics store for replacement components, then fixing it himself with no real experience. It used to be a fundamental part of our culture to be able to repair the products we pay to own. Now we fighting companies like Apple for our right to repair the devices we own and paid for. In response, they disable core features of their iPhone experience for anyone who dares view the insides of their phone and attempt to fix it with authentic compontents. And I'm seeing people defend Apple and their behavior. Weird, especially when Steve Wozniak, who helped Steve Jobs start down this path, spoke out against the lack of repairability in moden technology. Like, a key figure in the creation of Apple literally said this is not how it's supposed to be, for Apple or for any company, given how common repair was in our culture just a few short decades ago. But yet Apple proclaims environmentalism is a priority, while their devices fill landfills since you can't repair them. Seems legit

Unfortunately, the whales are willing to pay $5000 for a monitor with no stand, then pay $1000 extra to get the stand seperately, because it's Apple and they can't be anti-consumer to them. OR, these people get locked into the Apple ecosystem. Transfering data between MacOS and windows is harder than it needs to be, and people get an iPhone, then some AirBuds, then an apple watch and suddenly they would have to replace half a dozen items costing well over a few grand just to switch from Apple to a respectable company. Or worse, one person loves Apple, has kids, and now the whole household uses exclusively Apple and they need to keep upgrading everyone's phones costing them several thousands of dollars each year or every few years. The kids never know anything different, and the whole family gets locked into their walled garden and closed ecosystem for as long as owning an Apple is more familar to them. Any apps purchased for these devices won't transfer to an android. So unless you're willing to do essentially burn the money spent on their platform, they have such a tight leash on their consumers and know that they aren't going anywhere. And as soon as those devices are even slightly damaged they charge near full price for a replacement that ends up being refurbished anyways, or you pay even more for a brand new phone. It's an absolute joke, but they are completely serious about it.
With this I feel like they will lose more followers and over all customers. Because their repairs are freaking expensive as shit. My whole life I've bought only androids dropped them so many times and only one cracked after 5 drops.
What's impressive is everyone still riding their wave, just going with the overpriced phone and all the overpriced accessories you need to get use out of the phone😂

All this is done not so the devices are “throw away” but so they can resell devices multiple times and gain much MUCH higher profits doing so. Think about it. You need your screen repaired? The screen would cost Apple a very small amount but instead of charging to replace they charge X-amount to swap the device to a new one. The customer thinks: “well it cost me $500 but I got a brand new phone so it’s not too bad”. Then Apple take that broken screen device, change the screen out for what costs them next to nothing and then resell that device as “refurbished” and the customer buy it’s thinking “wow it’s basically new and only cost me $800. They can profit off one single device multiple times. It’s disgusting and I honestly can’t believe laws haven’t been passed to put an end to this. Quite literally daylight robbery.

And I never have issue replacing screens or batteries etc. The only thing I wish they kept was the physical fingerprint scanner cause it only works if you are alive. The behind the screen works alive or dead.
Such a shame for Apple to continue to go down this path. I fully expect within the next 5 years iPhones will no longer be repairable at all (e.g. screen is soldered on) and any hardware-related issues will result in a complete replacement.

Since the iPhone 8 battery messages appear. How have they made them more repairable? Hell, a camera replacement disables the only other way to unlock the phone and many apps.

The same thing happened with cars back in the 80s. Auto manufacturers started using specific tech that only their dealers could use until the government's stepped in and forced car parts to be standardised and obd2 ports be used across all manufacturers so fault codes can be diagnosed by regular mechanic garages. The same thing definitely needs to happen here. Government's need to step in and force the right to repair on phone tech like they did on cars

Modern-day autos can't be worked on by the household mechanic no thanks to all those computer chips being integrated into modern autos. The global chip shortage has shown why the computerization of nearly everything in modern society is a very BAD IDEA. Unless Right to Repair is passed at the federal/state level, expect these issues to only get worse as time goes on... Not only that, but the overall durability/quality of modern products has gone WAY DOWN. It's done that way by design since repairs/replacements net companies more $$$$$$/PROFITS.

I can't imagine they can get away with this in Europe - however, the USA is rather dodgy. Currently, 19 states are considering so-called “Right to Repair” legislation that would require device manufacturers to make repair parts, tools, repair guides, and diagnostic software available to the public. Apple is fighting this legislation; public records show that Apple is lobbying against the bill in New York, where lobbying records must be disclosed to the public.

Right to Repair is passed in one state, Joe Biden has now passed an executive order to defend the right to repair, however it has loopholes that must be overcome. In Canada, it's the same issue, in the UK same thing. They will get away with it for a while but it is so tightly locked down now, all they have to do is lift a couple of restrictions at a time, each case resulting in a new one (buying time). So far, they are getting away with it, just as Tesla now does with their horrific cars. Tesla gets away with it because they are a software company, not an auto manufacturer....it's in court almost every day, Apple, Microsoft and Tesla lawyers now in the same room, trying to defend their IP.

Take copyright infringement (downloading songs and movies for example). In Canada and the UK, those laws are a lot more consumer protective. Example. In the USA, Discovery TV will send a request to an internet provider, indicating someone was downloading a TV Series. The internet provider is obligated to provide Discovery with the downloader's personal info based on the IP collected by Discovery. Discovery can then tale direct action and sue for copyright infringement. In Canada and the UK, the Internet provider cannot legally send Discovery the downloader's personal info as it is protected by the Bill of Rights (their equivalent to the Constitution). In Canada and the UK, they will merely pass on Discovery's message to the downloader, along with their own message stating that it is not illegal to download and the US company cannot take legal action against you. For Discovery to take action, they have to gain a court order for each IP they collect, then apply to have the Internet provider send them the downloader's info. Even if they were to go to such expense, the maximum fine is 5,000 per title, so they simply don't bother at all. In the USA, one letter gets them in direct contact and they can go forward and sue the downloader directly, with little to no cost and with no Constitutional protections provided to the downloader. "Freedom" I think more Americans should venture out and realize just how little they have compared to other free nations. US laws are based on UK laws, as are Canada's, however there are an endless amount of added protections for US businesses, which completely circumvent the citizen's 'assumed' rights.

I just finished watching an official Valve video on disassembling their upcoming Steam Deck. They include warnings (in a sort of Aperture Science way), but show you EXACTLY how to do it. What a difference between them and Apple. I now wish Valve sold phones.
At this point they might as well plant a small explosive into the phone that triggers if you *dare* to open it. I remember when early smartphones could be assembled and disassembled easily, you could even remove the battery on its own without any issues.

Go buy a Tesla, EXACTLY the same thing applies because they hide behind the fact that they are a software company, not an auto manufacturer. When tesla is in court over a 'right to repair' clause (which is a daily event now), Apple and MS lawyers are there with them, not GM or Ford's legal teams. Tesla can tell who drives the car, how much they drive, where they drive, how they drive )speed braking etc). The seats, as with all car now, have active airbags. This means the seat registers how much weight is on it and knows how to safely deploy airbags in case of an accident. It's great for saving children's lives but at the same time it can be used to determine, WHO is driving. With Tesla seeking to be an insurance provider in the future, this would allow them to instantly charge or fine people for allowing secondary drivers not listed in the insurance premium. They will know if your kids drive at night, if you are high risk as a speeder etc. People are all worried about RFID cards and the government spying on their every move, but this is reality, which is completely legal still.
To people that didn't get it, when the phone freaked out when it had parts repaired, apple literally PROGRAMMED the phones to perform those actions. It is not 'an aftermarket' part effecting the phone. With glitches and features gone without an alerting message, they deliberately made the phone not work, to undermine third-party repair stores that doesn't have access to original parts and make users think they broke the phone.
I used to repair iphones and Apple has has a configuration software where that only Apple techs are able to use Anytime that you switch out a part on an iPhone you have to configure it with that software if you don't it breaks the phone

Hugh, thank you for always providing clear and in-depth tear down instructions and tips in your videos! Watching them got me genuinly interested in repairing tech and you gave me the courage to do a housing and back panel (I smashed mine 😓) replacement on my 13 Pro myself. Sadly the suction cups I received with the parts aren’t even remotely strong enough to defeat Apple’s adhesive. Instead of risking damaging the display by overheating it I’ve just ordered a better suction cup. I’m not doing these repairs frequently, let alone professionally, so I didn’t fancy spending $100-$150 US for a heat pad and I’ll have to make do with a heat gun. I’m interested to see what videos you’ll do in the future. I also love car repairs so keep them coming 👍
"Right to Repair" needs to become a global movement. Apple has always had a "walled garden" as relates to software but that obviously has extended to hardware.

Mercedes does something similar to Apple, if a sensor breaks on your car you can't replace it yourself. You gotta take it to a Mercedes dealership so that they can replace the sensor and reprogram it to the car. The future is screwed honestly.

Your video edit flows well with the voiceover. So well that it’s easy to watch and never realize the amount of extra work everything actually takes, having all the shots set up of the shown repair. I can imagine it’s sort of a separate selected timeline of the portions for the edit, and then the more redundant off-camera repair work. Or do you record the whole process so you have more freedom in the edit? Either way It’s gotta take a decent amount of time to do, so thank you for what you do in providing evidenced demonstration to provide some accountability to the design woes of tech companies that expect to sell people devices that they’ll never actually be able to truly own or have the freedom to repair. I have always repaired my devices myself, as I purchased them for a substantial amount of money and want the freedom to actually own them, and not only lease them until a company decides they should be irrelevant. There’s only two parties that I know of that will benefit from these changes. 1; Apple ofc and 2; Unofficial Chinese mod tools/kits that sells/rents such things. Everyone else just got rear-ended by Apple. When actual/real innovations are being drip fed by Apple Corp, this is the kind of things one can expect. If the logic for recognition is in the camera, then the concept is garbage. Furthermore, Apple could simply reset this setting after a replacement. the on board mother board is responsible for identifying hard ware id's you have to change the id's to match the updated hardware.. But those bios settings are locked until you use the software that is owned by apple to unlock them so they can be changed to support the new hardware and identified most of the time its from older model phones due to the same hardware build scheme but they charge you as if it was a new hardware being installed.
On my Samsung S10, I replaced my back glass three times, my display, and my rear camera over the time that I have owned it; all done with ebay parts and UA-cam tutorials. I will likely stick to my phone for as long as I can continue fixing it. Right to repair should be inherent, so long as you are buying the phone.
@@myg0t_jsm yep, to add to that 3rd party parts who wish to include the Apple logo print it with ink which dissolves with isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol so if they need to remove the logo, they just wipe it off and it gets past customs or whatever. Smart!

At least IBM PCs are totally modular. Components like RAM, disk drives, power supply units, and definitely cables can be upgraded or replaced with third party parts without loss of functionality. I'm surprised that swapping just the cable in an iPhone13 will result in some apps not working.

The first (and last) IPhone I ever bought was the IPhone 4, it was marketed as a tough phone that was 10 times stronger than any of the competition. I dropped it once and the whole screen shattered, the expense to get it replaced was ridiculous compared to other brands of phones. Also in order to download music or videos onto it I had to download ITunes and sync it every time to my computer whereas with other phones I could quite easily just drag and drop what I wanted onto the phone, even at a friend's house. Everything about it was limiting and even back then I felt as though it was not my phone, I'm glad I got rid of that piece of junk and have never bought an Apple product since.

Mine was the 5S. Surprisingly, mine survived all up until today. (Dont worry, I just use it to monitor and adjust my router settings, nothing more. I already upgraded to a Oneplus and I’m pretty happy with it). The funny part is that, even if it works a lot of the apps are restricted behind a new OS, but why would I need to update the OS to access google fucking docs? The amazon app?

i love how much effort they put into making the phone practically irreparable so when your extremely expensive and overpriced phone has a minor failure you'll have to go to an equaly expensive and overpriced service so they can tell you that fixing it will cost almost as much as buying a new one

This includes the lightning port which is only found on their phones and of course the messaging that makes group chats practically unusable for anyone with Samsung. Hole up, as a current repair technician, I for some reason never thought to keep the brackets and parts with each other basically ocd organized right next to the part. My usual habit is to just put the screw in the same general area. Close enough that I know which screws go with what part. Though not nearly as neatly organized. Imma try that and see if bonus from the time and annoyance saved during the rebuild vs the time saved with my original way. Also why doesn’t Apple just have basically a 2FA authentication to verify a part is genuine. You could have each phone upon initial activation as part of the initial activation process. Generate half a key locally on the device, and once the Apple servers authenticating the initial activation of the device. Generate the other half of the key. Which they store in house somewhere no one else but them has access to. You could even update software when it detects a repair has been done on it. It can require an re-activation so Apple can verify genuine Apple parts and remotely re-enable automatically all the features that would normally be deactivated during a repair. You could even go so far as if they detect non genuine parts. You can have a message pop up “non genuine part detected. Due to that, True Tone and Face ID are now disabled. Please use genuine Apple parts next time. Thank you for being the best part about Apple.” Then when you could easily have open repairability where you could literally sell OEM parts quite readily to any Tom dick and harry that has a halfway decent set of tools would happily repair their device on their own increasing sales knowing one of the major things holding them back from a repair is all the features they would lose. Most people with more than a couple brain cells could then be enabled to do repairs. Significantly increasing the number of devices being bought for donor phones for those who want a 1:1 swap and significantly increase part sales too. The software locks and hardware locks are a barrier to entry for most to even THINK about repairing their own crap. You could very easily open Apple up to right to repairability but still retain that level of control on the ecosystem and any changes to it as well.
The amount of money Apple saved by not giving you a proper charger, using a smaller box, using recycled parts in your phone, and no plastic and still charging you more for it than any previous models is their sustainability campaign
Obviously when they say "sustainability" they mean sustainable business. Use fewer materials and force customers to hand over perfectly recyclable components for free, then charge even more money for what you sell them in return. I can't believe their practices aren't outlawed yet.

Furniture out there from over a thousand years ago then fast-forward to IKEA of today, and you can't repair it because it simple falls apart. TV's dating back to the 1950s still work today that are easy to repair (too bad we remove analogue standards but beside the point). I have radios from the 1960s that can be repaired (normally capacitors are the problem). I have computers for 40 years ago I can repair. I have cell phones from 1970s to even flip phones, to feature phones to smartphones to around 2016 that could be repaired. SUDDENLY there is an issue in allowing that so glue the back on is where it all began to go downhill.

Not sure if it's new since your video posted but I just checked the apple "self service repair guide" for the 13 and it instructs users to contact apple after the repair for an "optional" software configuration that "may" be required after a self repair. The configuration will check that parts are genuine and "re-calibrate" them so that they function correctly in the device.
So, let me get this straight. They do everything to prevent you from opening your phone yourself for repairs, yet the glass is still as fragile as wineglass.
It's intentionally designed this way. They want people to crack their screens as it forces them to pay for repairs. Now they completely rule the repair industry of their own shitty product.
How thin can you even make functional plastic film? That stuff usually can survive a drop from a car roof and only get harmless cracks that you space out after a week.

the Lg g4 is the best phone for repairing because you can literally pull every component out of the phone and change stuff without breaking it but the phone being one of the first Lg smart phones wasn’t all that great and had many issues but what caused the phone for me to break was my sister who constantly just ran the battery dry until it couldn’t keep power anymore and then she proceeded to try and repair it herself and ended up frying the motherboard.
What is making me real mad is Apple saying, bragging over and over about how "green and recycled and love environnement " they are when in reality they do not give a crap about it. Getting on for hours about trivial "yay paper wraps and recycled metals", in the mean time the real big impact is blocking repairs, forcing throwing phones away, and making people upgrade to the same phone with no changes (exept the usual "slightly better camera, performance and battery". Apple just has the worst attitude of any company. They do not hesitate to lie, f. their customers/environnement, and whatever the feel like doing to make money.

I'm a user of mostly Apple products, I have a 13 Pro Max. And even I can agree this is kinda true... This stuff is completely intentional and really a shame. I hope I never drop mine and crack the screen because if I do I'm probably going to just live with it when the alternative is paying Apple's prices for a replacement.

I've been building and upgrading all my computers for over 20 years. It has been an awesome experience because I have never used an Apple product and never will because of this. This is their legacy.
Me too! I was running a Phenom II quad core from circa 2009 up until a couple years ago. When the computer got slow, I switched from Win7 to Linux Mint, and what do you know, it miraculously went fast again. Eventually upgraded for faster multi-threaded compile times.

@@nebylicza, I doubt. Having to forcefully update the firmware that leads to a slower speed or "better battery" and downgrading is almost impossible. End of service will hit the older phones, and you can't have other apps as it requires a specific ios version. In terms of hardware, I might agree that it lasts long. But as the phone and service generally, I doubt it to be sustainable for consumers.
Iphones are very durable and if you know what you are doing they are compatible in almost all situation (despite the usual inconvenience sometimes ill admit). I have an iphone 6 and 8 (for work) that i have been abusing for many years now with no issues (neither software nor hardware). Before that, i used to change phones (mostly samsungs) every year/year and a half due to software slowing down despite formatting or the very fragile hardware. Despite all, what apple is doing now is truly f*cked and twisted and is seriously making me consider an android for my next phone (if i need another one).

California's Right to Repair Law is almost certainly being broken here. In almost all cases the gov does not go far enough to enforce their own stated laws. The profits they make will outweigh the meager fine they might incur after months/years in drawn out court cases. Sad because it is so much garbage it is almost unimaginable.
I love how Apple is using security screws inside the phone. To Apple engineers: The screen is glued shut. If someone had enough persistence to get it opened, weird screws aren't going to stop them either.
Probably more to just use the same screws bits to assemble the whole phone, if they cared about making it harder they would use a different security screw on the inside then the outside, since if you can open it obviously you already have the screw driver

Because Samsung and other Android devices sucked for 6 years so Apple devices stayed in people's minds as the quality and fancy choice because most alternatives sucked but now even cheaper alternatives have multiple advantages over even the top of the line apple product even visually speaking iphones still have that ugly notch even though most phone brands are racing to have all screen displays.

Ikr I have an oukitel C21 with 4 back cameras and a fingerprint sensor also with face id all for a whopping 170 pounds. it's truly appalling how apple is still considered a top of the line phone when there phones are so outdated. Realistically nothing's changed since the iphone 8 or 9 apart from make it harder to use and more expensive.

2. Even if you're rich, there is a probability of you living in a rural area, where the Official Apple Shop is hundred of miles away, which still making it more inconvenience
And I know I was wrong about the popularity plummet due to the repairability, what I mean is fewer people would buy the iphone 13 & 12, due to the repairability issue, I really hope Apple would notice this as an issue decreasing the new iPhone sales, thus releasing an iOS update to allow the third-party repair, but I'm sure Apple wouldn't do that sadly

It's a matter of signing certificate, not physical repair. For security reason the parts are certificate signed. And give Apple certificates to third parties is like giving you home keys to your mechanic. Third party can do everything they want with the certificates, that means a security flaw great like a black hole. Not even Apple do this, also Android phones with an high level of security. And even Apple cannot repair the parts, they simply change them. Some of them are low in the key chain and can be simply replaced with a part with a valid certificate. Some of them, like FaceID, have certificates that are related to the motherboard. That means that Apple changes motherboard and FaceID at one time, thus giving you a new phone is the same result. But that's why violate FaceID via software is so hard, if it was done. At this time, as I know, on a vanilla phone not jailbreaked FaceID cannot be violated, as even the TPM chip, but I can be wrong on this. You're confusing with the fact that you sync your device with your account. If you can change the signing certificate by your own, it's easy to store the phone of someone, replace it with compromised hardware, resync, and give it back to the user. All the story behind the certificate and the asymmetric cryptography behind this is that the private key used to sign the hardware is in Apple only hands. Without it, you cannot generate another certificate. It's the basics of security and how it works for hardware secure boot, signing, TLS, HTTPS and whatever uses certificates. It's also strongly secure, because if Apple revoke the keys behind the certificates and a revoked hardware connects to the internet, it stop to works. This is good if hardware result compromised at the source. Also, analogue case of use happen in Europe, where some certificates used to create COVID-19 green passes had been stolen and used to manufacture false certificates. EU revoked the keys, and all the false certificates failed to verify. Hardware signing works like this as well, but currently on iOS uses only keys that are shared between OS, key hardware as FaceID and motherboard. On Secure Boot devices, instead, keys are upgraded at boot. On iOS, key signing is also used on application, which cannot be executed if not signed using a valid Apple certificate. As per the hardware, on your development machine you ask for the certificate, but the one who emits it is Apple. Private keys of the certificate are in Apple own hands, to the opposite of Google Play where you use a used to provide a self signed certificate. But this led to the fact that a lot of malware was published and Google switched to a model similar to the one of Apple, where you require the certificate and Google provides it to you. Well, on iPhone, iMac, iPad, high class Samsung devices, high class Dell devices, Lenovo, Microsoft Surface, and every piece of hardware were security is an issue for the use who buy this class of devices, certificate signed hardware and Secure Boot is the standard way of do things. Don't play smart with me, I'm a software engineer, I develop and design software on every architecture possible and security issues are my bread of life. Instead, you seems to not have any idea at all how devices internals works, so you do have missed the whole point: if you want 100% security, this is the way. You know strangely this reminds me of my electronic engineering days, where they taught us how to make robust, modular machines so that their parts could be replaced, if some parts died mid operation the device would still work, and how a person with the most basic repair kit should be able to understand and to fix it easily. The disabling of features when replacing components with verified, brand new components, is shamelessly disgusting. Steve Wozniak spoke on right to repair and how he used to be able to repair tvs, radios, etc just heading to a Radio shack or similar electronics store for replacement components, then fixing it himself with no real experience. It used to be a fundamental part of our culture to be able to repair the products we pay to own. Now we fighting companies like Apple for our right to repair the devices we own and paid for. In response, they disable core features of their iPhone experience for anyone who dares view the insides of their phone and attempt to fix it with authentic compontents. And I'm seeing people defend Apple and their behavior. Weird, especially when Steve Wozniak, who helped Steve Jobs start down this path, spoke out against the lack of repairability in moden technology. Like, a key figure in the creation of Apple literally said this is not how it's supposed to be, for Apple or for any company, given how common repair was in our culture just a few short decades ago. But yet Apple proclaims environmentalism is a priority, while their devices fill landfills since you can't repair them. Seems legit

Unfortunately, the whales are willing to pay $5000 for a monitor with no stand, then pay $1000 extra to get the stand seperately, because it's Apple and they can't be anti-consumer to them. OR, these people get locked into the Apple ecosystem. Transfering data between MacOS and windows is harder than it needs to be, and people get an iPhone, then some AirBuds, then an apple watch and suddenly they would have to replace half a dozen items costing well over a few grand just to switch from Apple to a respectable company. Or worse, one person loves Apple, has kids, and now the whole household uses exclusively Apple and they need to keep upgrading everyone's phones costing them several thousands of dollars each year or every few years. The kids never know anything different, and the whole family gets locked into their walled garden and closed ecosystem for as long as owning an Apple is more familar to them. Any apps purchased for these devices won't transfer to an android. So unless you're willing to do essentially burn the money spent on their platform, they have such a tight leash on their consumers and know that they aren't going anywhere. And as soon as those devices are even slightly damaged they charge near full price for a replacement that ends up being refurbished anyways, or you pay even more for a brand new phone. It's an absolute joke, but they are completely serious about it.
It's almost impressive how they can make their phones self destruct like that.

All this is done not so the devices are “throw away” but so they can resell devices multiple times and gain much MUCH higher profits doing so. Think about it. You need your screen repaired? The screen would cost Apple a very small amount but instead of charging to replace they charge X-amount to swap the device to a new one. The customer thinks: “well it cost me $500 but I got a brand new phone so it’s not too bad”.
Then Apple take that broken screen device, change the screen out for what costs them next to nothing and then resell that device as “refurbished” and the customer buy it’s thinking “wow it’s basically new and only cost me $800.
They can profit off one single device multiple times.

Such a shame for Apple to continue to go down this path. I fully expect within the next 5 years iPhones will no longer be repairable at all (e.g. screen is soldered on) and any hardware-related issues will result in a complete replacement.

Auto manufacturers started using specific tech that only their dealers could use until the government's stepped in and forced car parts to be standardised and obd2 ports be used across all manufacturers so fault codes can be diagnosed by regular mechanic garages. The same thing definitely needs to happen here. Government's need to step in and force the right to repair on phone tech like they did on cars

Modern-day autos can't be worked on by the household mechanic no thanks to all those computer chips being integrated into modern autos. The global chip shortage has shown why the computerization of nearly everything in modern society is a very BAD IDEA. Unless Right to Repair is passed at the federal/state level, expect these issues to only get worse as time goes on... Not only that, but the overall durability/quality of modern products has gone WAY DOWN. It's done that way by design since repairs/replacements net companies more $$$$$$/PROFITS.

Right to Repair is passed in one state, Joe Biden has now passed an executive order to defend the right to repair, however it has loopholes that must be overcome. In Canada, it's the same issue, in the UK same thing. They will get away with it for a while but it is so tightly locked down now, all they have to do is lift a couple of restrictions at a time, each case resulting in a new one (buying time). So far, they are getting away with it, just as Tesla now does with their horrific cars. Tesla gets away with it because they are a software company, not an auto manufacturer....it's in court almost every day, Apple, Microsoft and Tesla lawyers now in the same room, trying to defend their IP.

Take copyright infringement (downloading songs and movies for example). In Canada and the UK, those laws are a lot more consumer protective.
Example. In the USA, Discovery TV will send a request to an internet provider, indicating someone was downloading a TV Series. The internet provider is obligated to provide Discovery with the downloader's personal info based on the IP collected by Discovery. Discovery can then tale direct action and sue for copyright infringement.
In Canada and the UK, the Internet provider cannot legally send Discovery the downloader's personal info as it is protected by the Bill of Rights (their equivalent to the Constitution). In Canada and the UK, they will merely pass on Discovery's message to the downloader, along with their own message stating that it is not illegal to download and the US company cannot take legal action against you. For Discovery to take action, they have to gain a court order for each IP they collect, then apply to have the Internet provider send them the downloader's info. Even if they were to go to such expense, the maximum fine is 5,000 per title, so they simply don't bother at all. In the USA, one letter gets them in direct contact and they can go forward and sue the downloader directly, with little to no cost and with no Constitutional protections provided to the downloader. "Freedom" I think more Americans should venture out and realize just how little they have compared to other free nations. US laws are based on UK laws, as are Canada's, however there are an endless amount of added protections for US businesses, which completely circumvent the citizen's 'assumed' rights.

I just finished watching an official Valve video on disassembling their upcoming Steam Deck. They include warnings (in a sort of Aperture Science way), but show you EXACTLY how to do it. What a difference between them and Apple. I now wish Valve sold phones.

Go buy a Tesla, EXACTLY the same thing applies because they hide behind the fact that they are a software company, not an auto manufacturer. When tesla is in court over a 'right to repair' clause (which is a daily event now), Apple and MS lawyers are there with them, not GM or Ford's legal teams. Tesla can tell who drives the car, how much they drive, where they drive, how they drive )speed braking etc). The seats, as with all car now, have active airbags. This means the seat registers how much weight is on it and knows how to safely deploy airbags in case of an accident. It's great for saving children's lives but at the same time it can be used to determine, WHO is driving. With Tesla seeking to be an insurance provider in the future, this would allow them to instantly charge or fine people for allowing secondary drivers not listed in the insurance premium. They will know if your kids drive at night, if you are high risk as a speeder etc. People are all worried about RFID cards and the government spying on their every move, but this is reality, which is completely legal still.
You only buy the permission to use it.
To people that didn't get it, when the phone freaked out when it had parts repaired, apple literally PROGRAMMED the phones to perform those actions. It is not 'an aftermarket' part effecting the phone. With glitches and features gone without an alerting message, they deliberately made the phone not work, to undermine third-party repair stores that doesn't have access to original parts and make users think they broke the phone.
I used to repair iphones and Apple has has a configuration software where that only Apple techs are able to use Anytime that you switch out a part on an iPhone you have to configure it with that software if you don't it breaks the phone

Hugh, thank you for always providing clear and in-depth tear down instructions and tips in your videos! Watching them got me genuinly interested in repairing tech and you gave me the courage to do a housing and back panel (I smashed mine 😓) replacement on my 13 Pro myself. Sadly the suction cups I received with the parts aren’t even remotely strong enough to defeat Apple’s adhesive. Instead of risking damaging the display by overheating it I’ve just ordered a better suction cup. I’m not doing these repairs frequently, let alone professionally, so I didn’t fancy spending $100-$150 US for a heat pad and I’ll have to make do with a heat gun. I’m interested to see what videos you’ll do in the future. I also love car repairs so keep them coming 👍
"Right to Repair" needs to become a global movement. Apple has always had a "walled garden" as relates to software but that obviously has extended to hardware.

Your video edit flows well with the voiceover. So well that it’s easy to watch and never realize the amount of extra work everything actually takes, having all the shots set up of the shown repair. I can imagine it’s sort of a separate selected timeline of the portions for the edit, and then the more redundant off-camera repair work. Or do you record the whole process so you have more freedom in the edit? Either way It’s gotta take a decent amount of time to do, so thank you for what you do in providing evidenced demonstration to provide some accountability to the design woes of tech companies that expect to sell people devices that they’ll never actually be able to truly own or have the freedom to repair. I have always repaired my devices myself, as I purchased them for a substantial amount of money and want the freedom to actually own them, and not only lease them until a company decides they should be irrelevant. If the logic for recognition is in the camera, then the concept is garbage. Furthermore, Apple could simply reset this setting after a replacement. So I would be careful about calling others "dense" if I were you.

the on board mother board is responsible for identifying hard ware id's you have to change the id's to match the updated hardware.. But those bios settings are locked until you use the software that is owned by apple to unlock them so they can be changed to support the new hardware and identified most of the time its from older model phones due to the same hardware build scheme but they charge you as if it was a new hardware being installed.

On my Samsung S10, I replaced my back glass three times, my display, and my rear camera over the time that I have owned it; all done with ebay parts and UA-cam tutorials. I will likely stick to my phone for as long as I can continue fixing it. Right to repair should be inherent, so long as you are buying the phone.

The first (and last) IPhone I ever bought was the IPhone 4, it was marketed as a tough phone that was 10 times stronger than any of the competition. I dropped it once and the whole screen shattered, the expense to get it replaced was ridiculous compared to other brands of phones. Also in order to download music or videos onto it I had to download ITunes and sync it every time to my computer whereas with other phones I could quite easily just drag and drop what I wanted onto the phone, even at a friend's house.
Everything about it was limiting and even back then I felt as though it was not my phone, I'm glad I got rid of that piece of junk and have never bought an Apple product since.
Had iPhones all my life. Currently on my first Samsung.. it's godlike. I can download adblocker apps off the fucking internet!!

Mine was the 5S. Surprisingly, mine survived all up until today. (Dont worry, I just use it to monitor and adjust my router settings, nothing more. I already upgraded to a Oneplus and I’m pretty happy with it).

This includes the lightning port which is only found on their phones and of course the messaging that makes group chats practically unusable for anyone with Samsung. Hole up, as a current repair technician, I for some reason never thought to keep the brackets and parts with each other basically ocd organized right next to the part.
My usual habit is to just put the screw in the same general area. Close enough that I know which screws go with what part. Though not nearly as neatly organized. Imma try that and see if bonus from the time and annoyance saved during the rebuild vs the time saved with my original way.
Also why doesn’t Apple just have basically a 2FA authentication to verify a part is genuine.
You could have each phone upon initial activation as part of the initial activation process.
Generate half a key locally on the device, and once the Apple servers authenticating the initial activation of the device. Generate the other half of the key. Which they store in house somewhere no one else but them has access to.
You could even update software when it detects a repair has been done on it. It can require an re-activation so Apple can verify genuine Apple parts and remotely re-enable automatically all the features that would normally be deactivated during a repair.
You could even go so far as if they detect non genuine parts. You can have a message pop up “non genuine part detected. Due to that, True Tone and Face ID are now disabled. Please use genuine Apple parts next time.
Thank you for being the best part about Apple.”
Then when you could easily have open repairability where you could literally sell OEM parts quite readily to any Tom dick and harry that has a halfway decent set of tools would happily repair their device on their own increasing sales knowing one of the major things holding them back from a repair is all the features they would lose.
Most people with more than a couple brain cells could then be enabled to do repairs. Significantly increasing the number of devices being bought for donor phones for those who want a 1:1 swap and significantly increase part sales too.
The software locks and hardware locks are a barrier to entry for most to even THINK about repairing their own crap.
You could very easily open Apple up to right to repairability but still retain that level of control on the ecosystem and any changes to it as well.
So much effort in making this a throw away item so you buy another new phone. Time to ditch Apple

Furniture out there from over a thousand years ago then fast-forward to IKEA of today, and you can't repair it because it simple falls apart. TV's dating back to the 1950s still work today that are easy to repair (too bad we remove analogue standards but beside the point). I have radios from the 1960s that can be repaired (normally capacitors are the problem). I have computers for 40 years ago I can repair. I have cell phones from 1970s to even flip phones, to feature phones to smartphones to around 2016 that could be repaired. SUDDENLY there is an issue in allowing that so glue the back on is where it all began to go downhill.

Not sure if it's new since your video posted but I just checked the apple "self service repair guide" for the 13 and it instructs users to contact apple after the repair for an "optional" software configuration that "may" be required after a self repair.
The configuration will check that parts are genuine and "re-calibrate" them so that they function correctly in the device.
So, let me get this straight. They do everything to prevent you from opening your phone yourself for repairs, yet the glass is still as fragile as wineglass.
It's intentionally designed this way. They want people to crack their screens as it forces them to pay for repairs. Now they completely rule the repair industry of their own shitty product.
How thin can you even make functional plastic film? That stuff usually can survive a drop from a car roof and only get harmless cracks that you space out after a week.

These lock downs are direct results from the "right to repair" laws. It's apple finding any and every loophole to make it difficult for any third party to touch the phone.
If someone could get a lawyer to read the fine print and file a class action lawsuit that would be awesome.

the Lg g4 is the best phone for repairing because you can literally pull every component out of the phone and change stuff without breaking it but the phone being one of the first Lg smart phones wasn’t all that great and had many issues but what caused the phone for me to break was my sister who constantly just ran the battery dry until it couldn’t keep power anymore and then she proceeded to try and repair it herself and ended up frying the motherboard.
After seeing this audacity, I feel EU is doing right with Apple. they deserve this.

What is making me real mad is Apple saying, bragging over and over about how "green and recycled and love environnement " they are when in reality they do not give a crap about it. Getting on for hours about trivial "yay paper wraps and recycled metals", in the mean time the real big impact is blocking repairs, forcing throwing phones away, and making people upgrade to the same phone with no changes (exept the usual "slightly better camera, performance and battery".

I'm a user of mostly Apple products, I have a 13 Pro Max. And even I can agree this is kinda true... This stuff is completely intentional and really a shame. I hope I never drop mine and crack the screen because if I do I'm probably going to just live with it when the alternative is paying Apple's prices for a replacement.

I've been building and upgrading all my computers for over 20 years. It has been an awesome experience because I have never used an Apple product and never will because of this. This is their legacy.

Me too! I was running a Phenom II quad core from circa 2009 up until a couple years ago. When the computer got slow, I switched from Win7 to Linux Mint, and what do you know, it miraculously went fast again. Eventually upgraded for faster multi-threaded compile times.

@@nebylicza, I doubt. Having to forcefully update the firmware that leads to a slower speed or "better battery" and downgrading is almost impossible. End of service will hit the older phones, and you can't have other apps as it requires a specific ios version. In terms of hardware, I might agree that it lasts long. But as the phone and service generally, I doubt it to be sustainable for consumers.
Iphones are very durable and if you know what you are doing they are compatible in almost all situation (despite the usual inconvenience sometimes ill admit). I have an iphone 6 and 8 (for work) that i have been abusing for many years now with no issues (neither software nor hardware). Before that, i used to change phones (mostly samsungs) every year/year and a half due to software slowing down despite formatting or the very fragile hardware.
Despite all, what apple is doing now is truly f*cked and twisted and is seriously making me consider an android for my next phone (if i need another one).

California's Right to Repair Law is almost certainly being broken here. In almost all cases the gov does not go far enough to enforce their own stated laws. The profits they make will outweigh the meager fine they might incur after months/years in drawn out court cases. Sad because it is so much garbage it is almost unimaginable.

I love how Apple is using security screws inside the phone.
To Apple engineers: The screen is glued shut. If someone had enough persistence to get it opened, weird screws aren't going to stop them either.
Probably more to just use the same screws bits to assemble the whole phone, if they cared about making it harder they would use a different security screw on the inside then the outside, since if you can open it obviously you already have the screw driver

@@thomashall1236 Nope, there are some pentalobes inside. Most Y-000 though, and some tiny Philips. I remember how the charging assembly for the iPhone 12 Pro had *almost* as many screws as the entire base S21 had.

It's beyond me why anyone who had even basic repair skills would still choose to buy this garbage.
Because Samsung and other Android devices sucked for 6 years so Apple devices stayed in people's minds as the quality and fancy choice because most alternatives sucked but now even cheaper alternatives have multiple advantages over even the top of the line apple product even visually speaking iphones still have that ugly notch even though most phone brands are racing to have all screen displays.

Ikr I have an oukitel C21 with 4 back cameras and a fingerprint sensor also with face id all for a whopping 170 pounds. it's truly appalling how apple is still considered a top of the line phone when there phones are so outdated. Realistically nothing's changed since the iphone 8 or 9 apart from make it harder to use and more expensive.
I'm surprised they didn't wrap the cables around components so when the case is open, it would self destruct.
