- Come with me to RSPB minsmere in search of one of the UKs most illusive birds. Along the way I will show you loads of other wildlife that lives at the nature reserve, birds, mammals, insects and more!
I was with Fred from @WatchRWildlife on this trip and a few of the clips are filmed by him.

I have been ill and your lovely calm and very real videos have helped my recovery. Thank you for wonderful wildlife shots.
Absolutely amazing. Thank you! Love your videos, they’re a breath of fresh air and I feel more relaxed for watching. You’re always so knowledgeable about what you capture on film. Thank you ❤🇬🇧🏴
Thank you. I'll have to get back to minsmere soon to see if I can see the bitterns again :)
How lovely to see a bittern. Thanks so much for sharing your day 😊
Thank you for joining me and watching, cheers!
Happy you got to see your Bittern! I remember you being excited about hearing one when I was with you haha
Haha, yes, finally managed to catch one on film!
Great video always great to watch wildlife what a great day you had..
Thank you Paul!
In a day where I feel very stressed and angry at the world. Your video helps me calm down Liam. I'm Sitting here by the river Ness watching the crows.
Another great video. 👍
Never heard of a Bitten before something new. 👍
Thank you! Im so glad my videos help you and also glad you get out and be in nature. Hopefully you have had many better days since you wrote this comment?
Hello!!fantastic and beatiful thank 😊👍
Thank you!
@@AShotOfWildlife happy day 👍
love this channel. Thanks for doing this
Thank you for watching!
Thanks very much for the outing! It was a good day and I am glad we saw what we saw.
It's a lot of kit to carry but having a handheld camcorder as well as a camera and tripod is that you can react quickly to things
Brilliant, shows how wonderful our wildlife really is
Thank you!
Bee Orchids. When I worked at 3M research in Harlow , we had Bee orchids growing in the front of the building , one of the staff spotted them and it became a nature reserve , the mowing was integrated into their life cycle
I just thought it was very well placed in a stretch with not much else going on. It was great to see though!
Very relaxing video loved every bit
Thank you so much, I am glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for creating such quick and easily digestible clips compact with all the general information of birds. I come across birds a lot as a tree surgeon and with your videos I am able to learn in the heat of as I experience. Thank you mate! All the best 🙏💜🕉💜🙏
Cheers Jake. I'm glad the videos are helpful! I've got a lot of new ones lined up (either in my head or on film) so keep an eye out for those!
Keep it up, it's always nice to watch your videos!
Thank you!
What a day. Many boxes ticked and some lovely extras. These are the days that reward the passion. Thanks Liam, for sharing yours 👍🏽
Thank you! It was a really great day, which I have had quite a few of recently. The last couple of months I have been successful in finding most things I have been looking for so hopefully thatll continue to be the case! Cheers
Wonderful work, Liam! May your wishes come true ✨
Thank you. It would be a win-win. More videos for everyone who watches them and I would get to spend more time living my passion :)
Beautiful shots of the bittern! Often heard them at Ham Wall, but never seen one (oh, apart from a glimpse of a tail feather, from a train , passing through Hampshire). Lovely shots of an avocet too! Well done!
Thank you. Before this year is out, I am going to Ham Wall. It is the most recommended nature reserve in the comments under my videos and I cant wait to see whats there!
I'd love a full video on the wild carrot cake plant! Seriously though, I love your videos, especially the longer ones where we get to see lots of different wildlife.
Maybe I'll add it to my list - "things you need to know about the wild carrot cake" lol. Thanks for your support and im glad you enjoy this type of video. As time goes on I will start to do more of this type of video and less of the fact files so there will be plenty more for you to watch. Cheers!
What a fantastic day! Lovely clear footage of everything you saw - plus so many sightings of a bittern. A real gift. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for watching, Im glad you enjoyed it!
Lovely piece
Thank you!
Absolutely love these video's. Makes me wish I was there. Great video as always. Keep up the good work and good luck for your wedding day ⛪
Thank you! Thats the idea of these videos, to teach about what is there but also to encourage people to get out there themselves. Cheers
great content, thanks
Thanks Helen!
What a bittern bonanza!
We have bitterns here too in nz but never seen one. Very envious!
Hope you can do this full time one day. Your videos are a joy, especially now my health prevents me from getting out and birdwatching now. ❤️
Im sorry to hear your health prevents you from getting out but I am so glad to be able to take you along with me on my adventures!
I wonder what the differences are between the bitterns you get there and the ones we have in the UK?
Thanks for your support and I am sure i'll see you in the comments section of my next vid :)
Another great video mate keep em coming!😊
Thank you. Currently working on the next one so stay tuned for that!
Great vid, enjoyed it to the end.
Well done on seeing the bittern, of you want to see more of recommend far ings nature reserve in Barton upon humber. Particularly the Ness hide, pretty much guaranteed to see one on most days.
Thank you!
Hmm, I have never heard of this reserve. I might have to check it out next time I am up that way! Thanks.
Hi Liam. Just a recent subber here from Nz. A quick Google search tells me that down here we have a guesstimate of 1000 Nz Bitterns left. Unfortunately I couldn't find a date for when those stats had been released. Many new wetlands have been created, however, so fingers crossed, that figure will increase. Those muntjac deer would give me a heart attack if I was alone in the bush on a dark night, and heard one over your way. But being a NZr of sound mind, 😂 I would realise that there had to be a genuine explanation for that sound.
Red deer were introduced down here in and around 1851 for hunting, but quickly took over and were destroying native bush. They just became a pain in the proverbial. They were straying onto valuable farmland too. So had to be eliminated to control the numbers. And for the sake of the snowflakes, there are still wild herds of red deer. No predators here. According to Google there are estimates of 40,300 muntjac in Uk. I would think that species would need a serious control of their numbers. Thank you for sharing Liam. Appreciate the time spent editing each time. Thank you. Atb from down here.
Thank you for your comment. I have a few new people in these comments from NZ so UA-cam must be recommending it to you guys for some reason- more the merrier though. One day I will visit new Zealand, I bet there is so much wildlife to see (and perhaps film)
@@AShotOfWildlife absolutely. Come down and have a look.
What a day you had with Fred! No end of the prime target, the bitterns, but a cuckoo to start with and a lovely bearded tit to end with, with lots of goodies in between. I thoroughly enjoyed this; thank you so much!
Thank you, I love your videos
Thank you so much!
Great video as always.
Thank you!
we have terns in Netteswell pond in Harlow , it made me step back when I saw them , lot of fish in that pond. I released 15 frogs into that pond when my Father decided to end his pond in the garden
Only 15 frogs? Friends and I moved two dustbins teeming with amphibians to a local park when the landlord wanted the pond filled in. Several escaped into the car on the way. When we released them, it resembled a biblical plague as hundreds of frogs, plus a few toads and many newts scattered in all directions. Probably upset the park's ecological balance a little!
The new boardwalk to the east hide is fantastic; I'm disabled and I was able to get to the hide for the first time in about ten years! I really hope that you attain your goal.
Lovely range of flora and fauna captured on film there, Liam. Never seen a bittern, although I heard them 'boom' in another part of east Anglia once. This hot summer seems to be bringing out the damselflies in large numbers locally - I lost count at 50 (of 2 species) in a short stretch of the Mole yesterday - but there are fewer dragonflies so far than last year.
Thanks Clive. I have to agree, lots and lots of damselflies about but not so many of the dragonflies, especially the larger species. Perhaps they wil be emerging late this year for some reason.
I went there a few years ago and had the most beautiful view of a bittern for a good hour or so. God bless you
Very interesting and enjoyable and understandable content. As a watcher from North America I can relate to many of the animals you observe. We have Bitterns that are no less secretive. Very much a family trait I suppose. Keep it going! You're very resourceful and have great knowledge of the wildlife. God bless and safe travels
Thank you! Love that you do all the walking & waiting (sigh) & share all your adventures with us. Just over the moon to see the bittern. Happy trails!
Haha, Im happy to share it with you and love the exercise (although not so much the waiting!)
American Bitterns can be difficult to see, usually just hear them. Other than getting lucky, have to go to their habitat even to hear them.
Lovely video, felt like I was there. Minsmere is one of my favourite RSPB sites, I’ve always been lucky enough to see a Bittern from the Island Hide. It must be a couple of years since I’ve been and that new broadwalk walk definitely wasn’t there, so I must go again soon.
My only criticism is the amount of advert breaks, I counted 8 😱
Hi Sue, thank for the feedback about the Ads, UA-cam decides where they go when I first upload but 8 does seem quite extreme for a 20 min video. I'll see if I can remove some of them.
The new boardwalk is from this winter as it wasnt there the last time I visited in the autumn for the red deer rutt. Its one of my favourite places in the world and I cant wait to go back again!
I saw a bittern when I was in primary school, early 90's. There wasn't many about at all then and I remember my teacher who was into a bit of bird watching down at the wetland was incredibly excited. It was the only time I ever saw him happy I think.
Shame that was the only time you saw him happy but what a great encounter. It would have been an extremely rare sighting back then, its hard enough to see them now when theyre "much" more common!
Great job
Thank you!
I thought you had “bitten” off more than you could chew for a moment 😉
Another great vid Liam.
Oh, see what you did there... Cheers Pete!
Good video
Thank you!
A grand day out!
It sure was David! Thanks for watching.
What a day! Only ever seen a bittern once myself, at Hickling, and massively failed to get an in focus shot 😂 Great video, Liam 🙌🏻
It was a great day! Hopefully you will get another chance at a bittern one day, maybe it would be worth making the trip down to minsmere?!
Keep at it, my friend. Your content comes from the heart and is excellent quality. You'll reach your goal.
Thank you so much!
Liam, thanks for such an informative video. Living in the north of England I have visited Silverdale numerous time in the hope of seeing a bittern but without success. I’ll have to get you to come with me then I’m sure to spot one. :)
Cheers David. As things are going at the moment, I cant disagree with you. I have been so lucky recently with my wildlife sightings I think I could get 50/50 odds on finding a yeti if I went looking!
Bitterns call are meant to sound like a horn. But I looked up the bittern call sounded more like a phone vibrating :/
Sometimes birds look fascinating and sometimes (if they are big birds or birds of prey) intimidating. Birds like raptors look so serious and fierce.
The call is really really deep, if I had to describe it I would say its like dragging a heavy chair over a solid wooden floor, or blowing air over the top of an open large bottle (I hope that makes sense). The laptop I use to make videos cannot actually produce a sound as deep as the bittern call so I need to use headphones to be able to hear it!
Love your channel Liam… if you ever want to do a nature reserve walk and review in Oxfordshire let me know. 👍
Thank you! I am hoping to start travelling around a bit soon so I will keep that in mind!
@@AShotOfWildlife my pleasure Liam 😊
Do love to see your enthusiasm for British wildlife. Hope it rubs off on more people and they start to appreciate the natural world around them 👍
Thats the plan. Hopefully a few people will see these videos and start to love (or at least take an interest in) the natural world. Cheers!
@@AShotOfWildlife theres a reason your channel is growing buddy. Keep up the good work 👍
Great shots mate, the weird thing is It was also in Minsmere that I saw both a Red Deer and a Bittern, I take it it's a popular place for them, but even a Bearded tit, nice.
Minsmere is a great spot for lots of things. On my first visit there I saw my first bearded tits but every time I've been I've seen something new! I'm glad you're enjoying the videos.
What a wonderful video Liam thank you so very much. Well what a wonderful day you had. During the video I was going to say what amazing camouflage bitterns have and they are quite carnivorous aren't they? I loved every second of this video and saw some amazing birds and scenery. I originally came from the UK and would love to visit these places. I wonder if I ever will. I am so happy to have found your channel and I get to see the British birds and wild life. Thank you again for such remarkable coverage and wonderful video. Till next time, take care.
Thank you so much. I hope you do get to visit one day and if you do, let me know and i'll point you in the right direction. It was such a great day, but they always are at minsmere!
I have followed loads of sightings around Yorkshire but it was never to be, we the went to Blacktoft Sands RSPB Goole, England UK and saw my first Bittern flight, the only thing that spoils this is that someone pointed to it. " Still counts in my book" 👍👍😂😂
Thats the benefit of many eyes all looking, when something does appear you are less likely to miss it. Im glad you got to see one and thanks for watching and commenting on the video. Cheers!
They sure are southern marsh orchids. There are always some in that exact spot at minsmere
Thanks for confirming. I have so much to learn when it comes wo animals that plants always slide down my list, ONE DAY I will put more time into learning about them!
Once Bittern Twice Shy 😂😂😎
I wont lie, I was tempted to put this as the title of the video, but I didnt think many people would click. Worth a chuckle though!
Been trying to see a Bittern for over 50 years!!! Still trying..........
You should try to get over to minsmere. I got really lucky that day but with a bit of patience and luck on your side you might do so too! Fingers crossed for you!
I do hope you can cross that frontier into making the channel full time Liam. The resource of fact file and longer videos you have built up shows CLEARLY that you deserve every success.
It would be brilliant if you could get a bittern actually booming, that'd keep all the baby boomers company in thier old age.. 🤣Nice one Liam! 🌟👍
Thanks William. I will take that as a challenge for next spring, to get a bittern booming on film. Thanks for your support and im glad you enjoy both types of content I make.
ive heard that bark in the back garden
Do people still collect bird eggs?
I know when I was a child people that took rare eggs from nests were the scum of the earth.
Some people still do but it isnt very common anymore and is illegal. Most of the people who get caught are old and eventually it will die out along with them.
Liam, keep dreaming. A Shot of Wildlife is a super channel.
Thank you! The dream continues :)
I didnt even know what a hide was b4 this vid!
Well im glad you watched it and learnt something new. Cheers!
in the US we have a rare bird called a ''Snipe'' usually a Snipe Hunt is organized when a group goes camping and there are new people along. newbies don't know about the Snipe so they are more than willing to go hunting for Snipe. while the noobs are out hunting snipe the rest of us go back to camp and relax. such fun. half hour later Snipe hunters return, side eye.
Looks like a Yorkshire Bitten
I've made you wait, so go on, why does it look like a yorkshire bittern?
@@AShotOfWildlife It's an old Yorkshire saying When its so rare, more than likely never been one......4 leaf clover, rare as a Yorkshire Bitten....
@@andyhutch8262 ah, there we go. I've learnt something new!
I’ve seen 5 this year alone 👀👀👀
ive never seen 1 in person no wonder ya cant see them if they hide in the reeds
To be honest, its hard to see them even when they are not hiding, especially if the reeds are brown!
Fabulous day & fabulous footage! We have Bitterns here in New Zealand, but they’re not common. I’ve seen them two or three times, usually while in a passing car & they in a roadside drain standing in that elegant frozen upright stance. A special bird ❤ Thanks for sharing
Last Saturday in May , while at the rifle range ... massive amount of Mayflies, never seen so many 🙂 we are near a river
Another great video. Always enjoy your content Liam.
Thanks Bob!
I sometimes watch the African Tau channel quite late (2:00 am’ish) and there is often a pair of spoonbills doing that same side-to-side sweep combined with a forward step. It does make me smile and puts me in mind of *Wimpy* _with his mincer,_ in the early Max Fleischer *Popeye* cartoons.
I liked the sand martins
Great video Liam, and such amazing views of those Bitterns!
Thank you! Sometimes the view was great, others it was almost impossible to see them. I wonder how many times I have been looking at a bittern and just not known it was there!
Miss you buddy 😊 well done!
How lovely. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Thank you for watching it :)
So jealous!! One day 🤞
Until this day I had always came close but never been successful, so if it can happen for me, itll probably happen for you too! Good luck.
Great video, love bitterns❤
Thank you!
Amazing Liam, and your commentary is excellent (as usual).
Thank you Tony!
Thanks.
Thank you!
Well done Liam! Another interesting film. Lucky you or seeing a Bittern!
Thank you, I have got so lucky recently with wildlife sightings. I think if I set out to find a Yeti with my current luck I would be in for a fair shot!
Great video mate 👍
Cheers Alex!
Great, Liam you saw the bitterns. What fantastic camouflage they have! Thanks for sharing this video, highlighting the various plants and wildlife, In a magnificent setting. Great to see a stonechat, never seen one before! Great video Liam.
Thank you! I didnt see stonechats when I was younger but these days I seem to spot them quite often. Perhaps theres a fact file there waiting to happen? Cheers!
@@AShotOfWildlife Cheers, Liam. Your passion really comes across. All the best! Alan. 👍
Thank you. Started my Sunday beautifully. So much wildlife in one film, it must have been a magical day.
Cheers Helen. Yes, it was a great day and im glad it helped to start your day well :)
Great video Liam, Minsmere is a magical reserve! Are you likely to be doing a piece on the European Bee-Eaters at Trimingham ?
Thanks Andy. I am not sure, I did visit last year and have some unused footage of the bee-eaters from then. Its a shame there are only 3 this year and it doesnt look like they are being successful at producing any chicks this time round. If im in the area, i'll definitely pop in to see them.
Great video thank you 😊
Thank you Gill. Glad you enjoyed!
Love your videos, out of curiosity have you ever seen a Cross bill?
Thank you. I have never seen a crossbill but I have been looking for them on 2 different trips. I think this year will be the year though!
We have bitterns in New Zealand however I’m yet to hear or see one
I wonder if they are the same species or a different one. I'll look into it some point!
Loved every minute!
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it.
Your best video yet ? Definitely for the variety of species.
Great work, Liam. Keep it up ! 😊
Thank you!
exellent video thanks for sharing
Thanks Keith! I appreciate your support!
Love this channel. So relaxing and informative :) Keep up the amazing work!
Thank you Harry!
What stunning film and editing; and your narration was spot on, too. I have briefly spotted Bittern (3x in about 10 holidays) while boating on The Norfolk Broads.
Thank you! I am hoping to do a video from a boat soon (and may actually get a small cabin cruiser myself one day). There is nothing like being on the water on a warm breezeless day!
Thanks Liam for putting on these videos. I only found you a couple of weeks ago. I enjoy them immensely. Thank you again
Well, welcome to the channel. I'm glad youre enjoying the videos and hope you will continue to do so :)
I went to Walberswick Marshes (just up from Minsmere) one spring day, and had 5 Bittern sightings, two individuals and three together in the course of an hour or so. Never seen them before or since. Hear them around there occasionally.
Wow. It must have been a boom day for bitterns! 3 at one time is a lifetime wish for some people so you've maybe used up your luck for a while.
i'm very jealous of your ability to find the Greater Crumbled Cake Plant and also Latte Trees! Well done!
Hahah, oh yes, only a select few have the skills and patience it takes to find such things! Cheers
Very nice video.
I got my 1st bittern at Island mere hide. We went jnto bittern hide that day, and it was raining, so there was only space for 1 person and the idiot sitting next to the space moved up so we couldn't sit down!
We had the last laugh, though, as a bittern was feeding in the open right in front of the empty Island Mere hide as we walked in
Haha, I have had similar things happen to me, with an otter and a red deer stag in Scotland. Before the days of making these videos but it was a similar type of thing where someone unnecessarily stopped me from joining in on one activity so I had to do another and it turned out to be much better than the original plan.
Love your videos Liam, thank you
Thank you, I appreciate your support!
Thanks Liam another great video 🙂
Thanks so much for watching, I am glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks Liam, this takes me back to when I used to go on annual sailing holidays to the Norfolk Broads in my youth. I could often hear the booming calls from my berth early in the mornings, I don’t think I ever caught more than a glimpse of one though.
Its such a unique noise, I bet its great to hear from within a boat too!
Very lucky to see them, Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Great video. I once had one of those Muntjac Deer bark just as I was walking past the bushes it was in. Scared the er, Heck out of me for a second !!
Thanks Geoff! Muntjac have made me jump more times than I care to admit!
I absolutely love your videos and often tell people I know about them or things I’ve learned from them
I like your everything you need to know about… series
Have you done the bittern?
Thank you so much for enjoying my videos and sharing them with other people. I have not done a "things you need to know about" the bittern video yet, but I can confirm it is in the pipeline for the future. Cheers!
Been to Minsmere a couple of times. A lovely place, first time I'd seen Avocets there! Cheers Liam.
Its a brilliant spot, I would go there more often if I could but there are just so many different places to visit and such little time!
