His response “why do yous have so many GAA pitches”. If they knew their history and weren’t so insecure about being lost about their identity and who they were we wouldn’t have the issues we have, it’s beyond ridiculous.

Not long after I moved to Carnlough my father came for a visit, it was during marching season. I come from a northern English county and my dad was a true ‘patriot’(bigot). I drove him around a few areas of Belfast, then Larne and up the coast road to Carnlough. He asked during the drive why was the curb stones painted ‘red white and blue in some area and green white and orange in others areas. I explained to him it was marking out Nationalist (Catholic) and Loyalist (Protestant) areas. He was appalled and commented, it’s like dogs pissing and marking out their territory. That never left me. Then he asked why are there so many Union Jack flags flying. I gave pretty much gave the same answer. Again, he was appalled and said he would never look at his national flag the same again, which to him was a flag that united people (he was quite ignorant of our Empire history, but this was 30yrs ago and he was from a very different generation). He said he could never look at the Union flag with pride anymore given what he had seen on this trip and the way it was being used to segregate people. My dad was a bigot. So, I’ll leave northern Protestant (the loyalist ones) with this thought. He said to me “they do know don’t they {Loyalist Protestants} that we {the British} just look at that lot when we hear the Irish accent and think ‘there goes another thick Paddy’, because they are not British despite what they think they will always be Irish to us”

I lived in the North for over a decade and a half and got to know both communities very well. When I hear a Protestant talk about their ‘culture’ being ignored or slighted it reminds me, as a gay man of heterosexual people talking about ‘Straight Pride’ marches. Essentially they just don’t get it that the world we all inhabit is, in my case is ‘Straight Pride’ 364 days a year, and we the LGBTQ community get one day a year to express ourselves. So, I see no difference when you get a Protestant from Northern Ireland saying they are being denied ways to express their ‘Culture’. I was in Belfast Last week, My grandad is from Belfast and for the first time I could travel up to see the home of my grandad. Its sad whats happening up there still. The Catholic Church is dying in the Republic of Ireland due in no small part to the abuses its clergy took part in, but that's religion, not culture. Irish culture is very rich and diverse and includes sport, literature, dance, music, poetry etc. Unionist culture involves marching to celebrate a battle won by a Dutch King in the 17th century, lighting bonfires and singing songs about the aforementioned battle. It's a very poor excuse for culture

Not long after I moved to Carnlough my father came for a visit, it was during marching season. I come from a northern English county and my dad was a true ‘patriot’(bigot). I drove him around a few areas of Belfast, then Larne and up the coast road to Carnlough. He asked during the drive why was the curb stones painted ‘red white and blue in some area and green white and orange in others areas. I explained to him it was marking out Nationalist (Catholic) and Loyalist (Protestant) areas. He was appalled and commented, it’s like dogs pissing and marking out their territory. That never left me.
Then he asked why are there so many Union Jack flags flying. I gave pretty much gave the same answer. Again, he was appalled and said he would never look at his national flag the same again, which to him was a flag that united people (he was quite ignorant of our Empire history, but this was 30yrs ago and he was from a very different generation). He said he could never look at the Union flag with pride anymore given what he had seen on this trip and the way it was being used to segregate people.
My dad was a bigot. So, I’ll leave northern Protestant (the loyalist ones) with this thought. He said to me “they do know don’t they {Loyalist Protestants} that we {the British} just look at that lot when we hear the Irish accent and think ‘there goes another thick Paddy’, because they are not British despite what they think they will always be Irish to us”

I lived in the North for over a decade and a half and got to know both communities very well. When I hear a Protestant talk about their ‘culture’ being ignored or slighted it reminds me, as a gay man of heterosexual people talking about ‘Straight Pride’ marches. Essentially they just don’t get it that the world we all inhabit is, in my case is ‘Straight Pride’ 364 days a year, and we the LGBTQ community get one day a year to express ourselves.
So, I see no difference when you get a Protestant from Northern Ireland saying they are being denied ways to express their ‘Culture’. I see no difference in this claim and homophobic heterosexual people claiming they want straight pride marches because the Northern Protestants (British identity) is on display 365 days a year. It is in every thing we do in the north. It is everything you touch, watch, consume. I was in Belfast Last week, My grandad is from Belfast and for the first time I could travel up to see the home of my grandad. Its sad whats happening up there still. The Catholic Church is dying in the Republic of Ireland due in no small part to the abuses its clergy took part in, but that's religion, not culture. Irish culture is very rich and diverse and includes sport, literature, dance, music, poetry etc. Unionist culture involves marching to celebrate a battle won by a Dutch King in the 17th century, lighting bonfires and singing songs about the aforementioned battle. It's a very poor excuse for culture
